We investigate two equivalent, capacitively coupled semiconducting quantum dots, each coupled to its own lead, in a regime where there are two electrons on the double dot. With increasing interdot coupling, a rich range of behavior is uncovered: first a crossover from spin- to charge-Kondo physics, via an intermediate SU(4) state with entangled spin and charge degrees of freedom, followed by a quantum phase transition of Kosterlitz-Thouless type to a non-Fermi-liquid "charge-ordered" phase with finite residual entropy and anomalous transport properties. Physical arguments and numerical renormalization group methods are employed to obtain a detailed understanding of the problem.

Hydrothermal treatment of a slurry of badly crystalline (beta(bc)) nickel hydroxide at different temperatures (65-170 degrees C) results in the progressive ordering of the structure by the step-wise elimination of disorders. Interstratification is eliminated at 140 degrees C, while cation vacancies are eliminated at 170 degrees C. A small percentage of stacking faults continue to persist even in `crystalline' samples. Electrochemical investigations show that the crystalline nickel hydroxide has a very low (0.4 e/Ni) reversible charge storage capacity. An incidence of at least 15% stacking faults combined with cation vacancies is essential for nickel hydroxide to perform close to its theoretical (1 e/ Ni) discharge capacity. The C→A transformation of Pr2O3 has been examined. The transformation is sluggish and takes place at and above 750°C. C-Pr2O3 is oxidized at a lower temperature than the A-form and oxidation proceeds in two stages in both cases. A hydrate Pr 2O3 . H2O, formed by the interaction of C-Pr2O3 and water at relatively high temperature, is described and its behaviour compared with that of Pr(OH)3. The C-form undergoes hydration at 40°C while the A-form does not. All the observations have been explained in terms of the defect structure of C-Pr2O 3.

The extension of the superposition principle of the symmetries (P. Curie principle of symmetry) for the case of complete symmetry is given. The enumeration of all crystallographical groups of complete symmetry is presented, the number of elements having complete symmetry for each class of the crystals being indicated. The change of complete symmetry of the crystals under the phase transitions is obtained by superimposing the elements of complete symmetry of polar or axial vectors on the one hand, and the elements of complete symmetry of the crystals on the other. The tables of complete symmetry changes for the cubic, rhombic, monoclinic and triclinic crystals during the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phase transitions are given.

A quantitative structural investigation was carried out on (1-y)PbZrxTi1-xO3-yPbZn(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3) where y=0.1 and 0.2 ((1-y)PZT-yPZN). High resolution XRD data have been used for quantitative phase analysis. The nominal compositions were prepared by a two-step low temperature calcining solid-state method. The sintered samples show an average grain size of 1-2 mu m. It is demonstrated that the increase in the concentration of PZN leads to the shift of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of PZT towards the PbZrO3 end member. In the present work, an effort has been made to quantitatively determine the MPB phase contents and to regain the coexistence of tetragonal and monoclinic phases by varying the value of x(i.e. Zr/Ti ratio). The width of the MPB becomes considerably larger for y=0.10 and 0.20 as compared to pure PZT. This is attributed to the considerably lower grain size of our samples resulting from the adopted preparation method. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A detailed study of various reversed phase systems for the qualitative analysis of fatty acids has been made and it has been shown, among other things, that the liquid paraffin-aqueous methanol system is a most convenient one. The details of a fairly simple and rapid method for the quantitative estimation of higher fatty acids have also been discussed.

Major advances in the treatment of preterm infants have occurred during the last three decades. Survival rates have increased, and the first generations of preterm infants born at very low birth weight (VLBW; less than 1500 g) who profited from modern neonatal intensive care are now in young adulthood. The literature shows that VLBW children achieve on average lower scores on cognitive tests, even after exclusion of individuals with obvious neurosensory deficits. Evidence also exists for an increased risk in VLBW children for various neuropsychiatric disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related behavioral symptoms. Up till now, studies extending into adulthood are sparse, and it remains to be seen whether these problems persist into adulthood. The aim of this thesis was to study ADHD-related symptoms and cognitive and executive functioning in young adults born at VLBW. In addition, we aimed to study sleep disturbances, known to adversely affect both cognition and attention. We hypothesized that preterm birth at VLBW interferes with early brain development in a way that alters the neuropsychological phenotype; this may manifest itself as ADHD symptoms and impaired cognitive abilities in young adulthood. In this cohort study from a geographically defined region, we studied 166 VLBW adults and 172 term-born controls born from 1978 through 1985. At ages 18 to 27 years, the study participants took part in a clinic study during which their physical and psychological health was assessed in detail. Three years later, 213 of these individuals participated in a follow-up. The current study is part of a larger research project (The Helsinki Study of Very Low Birth Weight Adults), and the measurements of interest for this particular study include the following: 1) The Adult Problem Questionnaire (APQ), a self-rating scale of ADHD-related symptoms in adults; 2) A computerized cognitive test battery designed for population studies (CogState®) which measures core cognitive abilities such as reaction time, working memory, and visual learning; 3) Sleep assessment by actigraphy, the Basic Nordic Sleep Questionnaire, and the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. Actigraphs are wrist-worn accelerometers that separate sleep from wakefulness by registering body movements. Contrary to expectations, VLBW adults as a group reported no more ADHD-related behavioral symptoms than did controls. Further subdivision of the VLBW group into SGA (small for gestational age) and AGA (appropriate for gestational age) subgroups, however, revealed more symptoms on ADHD subscales pertaining to executive dysfunction and emotional instability among those born SGA. Thus, it seems that intrauterine growth retardation (for which SGA served as a proxy) is a more essential predictor for self-perceived ADHD symptoms in adulthood than is VLBW birth as such. In line with observations from other cohorts, the VLBW adults reported less risk-taking behavior in terms of substance use (alcohol, smoking, and recreational drugs), a finding reassuring for the VLBW individuals and their families. On the cognitive test, VLBW adults free from neurosensory deficits had longer reaction times than did term-born peers on all tasks included in the test battery, and lower accuracy on the learning task, with no discernible effect of SGA status over and above the effect of VLBW. Altogether, on a group level, even high-functioning VLBW adults show subtle deficits in psychomotor processing speed, visual working memory, and learning abilities. The sleep studies provided no evidence for differences in sleep quality or duration between the two groups. The VLBW adults were, however, at more than two-fold higher risk for sleep-disordered breathing (in terms of chronic snoring). Given the link between sleep-disordered breathing and health sequelae, these results suggest that VLBW individuals may benefit from an increased awareness among clinicians of this potential problem area. An unexpected finding from the sleep studies was the suggestion of an advanced sleep phase: The VLBW adults went to bed earlier according to the actigraphy registrations and also reported earlier wake-up times on the questionnaire. In further study of this issue in conjunction with the follow-up three years later, the VLBW group reported higher levels of morningness propensity, further corroborating the preliminary findings of an advanced sleep phase. Although the clinical implications are not entirely clear, the issue may be worth further study, since circadian rhythms are closely related to health and well-being. In sum, we believe that increased understanding of long-term outcomes after VLBW, and identification of areas and subgroups that are particularly vulnerable, will allow earlier recognition of potential problems and ultimately lead to improved prevention strategies.

Brookite, the orthorhombic modification of titanium dioxide, transforms to the tetragonal modification, rutile, on heating. The kinetics and energetics of the transformation have been studied. Below 715±10°C, the rate of transformation is extremely slow. There appears to be little or no induction time. The kinetic data can be fitted reasonably well by the first-order equation. The energy of activation is about 60 kcal/mole and the frequency factor is of the order of 1013 h-1. The entropy of activation from Eyring's theory is about -18 cal/mole deg. at 800°C. The heat of this transformation is -100±75 cal/mole. The kinetic results may be explained qualitatively in terms of various analogies but more clearly by the application of the order-disorder theory to diffusionless transformation in solids. It has been shown that the ratio of propagation rate constant to the nucleation rate constant is small and that there is little or negligible phase aggregation.

Expressions for the phase change Φ suffered by microwaves when transmitted through an artificial dielectric composed of metallic discs arranged in a three-dimensional array have been derived with different approaches as follows (i) molecular theory, (ii) electromagnetic theory and (iii) transmission line theory. The phase change depends on the distance t that the wave traverses inside the dielectric and also the spacing d between centre to centre of any two adjacent discs in the three principal directions. Molecular theory indicates Φ as an increasing function of t, whereas, the other two theories indicate Φ as an oscillatory function of t. The transmission line theory also exhibits Φ to be real or imaginary depending on t. Experimental values of Φ as a function of t have been obtained with the help of a microwave (3·2 cms wavelength) interferometer for two dielectrics having d as 1·91 cms and 2·22 cms respectively.

Electronic transport in the high temperature paramagnetic regime of the colossal magnetoresistive oxides, La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3), A=Ca, Sr, Ba, x similar or equal to 0.1-0.3, has been investigated using resistivity measurements. The main motivation for this work is to relook into the actual magnitude of the activation energy for transport in a number of manganites and study its variation as a function of hole doping (x), average A-site cation radius (< r(A)>), cationic disorder (sigma(2)) and strain (epsilon(zz)). We show that contrary to current practice, the description of a single activation energy in this phase is not entirely accurate. Our results clearly reveal a strong dependence of the activation energy on the hole doping as well as disorder. Comparing the results across different substituent species with different < r(A)> reveals the importance of sigma(2) as a metric to qualify any analysis based on (r(A)). (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Thermotropic liquid crystals are known to display rich phase behavior on temperature variation. Although the nematic phase is orientationally ordered but translationally disordered, a smectic phase is characterized by the appearance of a partial translational order in addition to a further increase in orientational order. In an attempt to understand the interplay between orientational and translational order in the mesophases that thermotropic liquid crystals typically exhibit upon cooling from the high-temperature isotropic phase, we investigate the potential energy landscapes of a family of model liquid crystalline systems. The configurations of the system corresponding to the local potential energy minima, known as the inherent structures, are determined from computer simulations across the mesophases. We find that the depth of the potential energy minima explored by the system along an isochor grows through the nematic phase as temperature drops in contrast to its insensitivity to temperature in the isotropic and smectic phases. The onset of the growth of the orientational order in the parent phase is found to induce a translational order, resulting in a smectic-like layer in the underlying inherent structures; the inherent structures, surprisingly, never seem to sustain orientational order alone if the parent nematic phase is sandwiched between the high-temperature isotropic phase and the low-temperature smectic phase. The Arrhenius temperature dependence of the orientational relaxation time breaks down near the isotropic-nematic transition. We find that this breakdown occurs at a temperature below which the system explores increasingly deeper potential energy minima.
