An analysis of the primary degradation products of the widely used commercial polysulfide polymer Thiokol LP-33 by direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometry (DP-MS) is reported. The mechanism of degradation is through a radical process involving the random cleavage of a formal C-O bond followed by backbiting to form the cyclic products.

DDHQ/TCC esters 3a–f, 7a–g were prepared either by oxidation of spiroketones 1 with DDQ/Image -chloranil or by condensation of acid chloride with DDHQ/TCC. NaBH4 reduction of unsaturated DDHQ 3a–b and TCC 7a–c esters gave the corresponding allylic alcohols in good yield without any observable 1,4-addition products. Reduction of saturated esters 3e, 7d, gave the corresponding alcohols. Alkyl esters 5 and 6, methyl benzoate and phenyl benzoate remained unaffected under these reduction conditions. In the reduction of compound 7e containing both alkyl and TCC esters, TCC ester is selectively reduced. Reduction of TCC mono esters 7f–g gave the lactones. The observed facile reduction has been rationalised.

Sulfur dioxide in aqueous solutions at low pH levels exists both in molecular SO2(aq) and in hydrolyzed ionic form HSO3-. Experiments indicate that only HSO3- is the reacting species in the oxidation catalyzed by activated carbon, while SO2(aq) deactivates by competing with HSO3 for the active sites of the catalyst particles. A mechanism is proposed and a rate model is developed that also accounts for the effect of sulfuric acid (product of the oxidation) on the solubility of sulfur dioxide. It predicts first order in HSO3-, half order in dissolved oxygen, and a linear deactivation effect of SO2(aq), which are confirmed by experimental data. The deactivation reaches a constant level corresponding to saturation of the active sites by SO2(aq). Activation energy for the oxidation is 93.55 kJ mol(-1) and for deactivation is 21.4 kJ mol(-1).

The products of the reaction of pyridinium poly(hydrogen fluoride), PPHF, with KIO3, Na2SnO3, NaBiO3, K2CrO4, Na2MoO4 and Na2WO4 were KIO2F2; Na2SnF6; NaHF2, BiF3; K3CrF6, KHF2, (PyH)(3)CrF6; NaHF2, (PyH)(2)MoO2F4.2NaHF(2); and (PyH)(2)WO2F4.2NaHF(2), respectively, while KClO3, KBrO3 and KlO(4) react with complete decomposition to form KHF2 as the fluorinated product. This differential reactivity and mode of reaction has been discussed in terms of the oxidation state of the central atom, the nature and strength of the bonds and the complex behaviour of the formed intermediate or fluorinated products that undergo complexation or solvation with pyridine and/or hydrogen fluoride.

Reaction of [Ru2O(O(2)CR)(2)(MeCN)(4)(PPh(3))(2)](ClO4)(2) (1) with 1,2-diaminoethane (en) in MeOH-H2O yielded a mixture of products from which a diamagnetic ruthenium(II) complex [Ru(MeCN)(en)(2)(PPh(3))](ClO4)(2) (2) and a paramagnetic ruthenium(III) species [Ru(O(2)CR)(en)(2)(PPh(3))](BPh(4))(2) (3) (R = Ph, a; C6H4-p-Me, b; C6H4-p-OMe, c) were isolated and characterized. The crystal structure of complex 2, obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis, shows a cis arrangement of the unidentate ligands in this octahedral complex. Complex 3 displays an axial EPR spectrum. Complex 2 undergoes two successive irreversible metal-centred one-electron oxidation processes at 1.13 and 1.33 V vs SCE in MeCN-0.1 M [NBu(4)(n)]ClO4 at 50 mV s(-1). The mechanistic aspects of the core cleavage reactions in 1 are discussed.

Aqueous phase oxidation of sulphur dioxide at low concentrations catalysed by a PVP-Cu complex in the solid phase and dissolved Cu(II) in the liquid phase is studied in a rotating catalyst basket reactor (RCBR). The equilibrium adsorption of Cu(II) and S(VI) on PVP particles is found to be of the Langmuir-type. The diffusional effects of S(IV) species in PVP-Cu resin are found to be insignificant whereas that of product S(VI) are found to be significant. The intraparticle diffusivity of S(VI) is obtained from independent tracer experiments. In the oxidation reaction HSO3- is the reactive species. Both the S(IV) species in the solution, namely SO2(aq) and HSO3- get adsorbed onto the active PVP-Cu sites of the catalyst, but only HSO3- undergoes oxidation. A kinetic mechanism is proposed based on this feature which shows that SO2(aq) has a deactivating effect on the catalyst. A rate model is developed for the three-phase reaction system incorporating these factors along with the effect of concentration of H2SO4 on the solubility of SO2 in the dilute aqueous solutions of Cu(II). Transient oxidation experiments are conducted at different conditions of concentration of SO2 and O-2 in the gas phase and catalyst concentration, and the rate parameters are estimated from the data. The observed and calculated profiles are in very good agreement. This confirms the deactivating effect of nonreactive SO2(aq) on the heterogeneous catalysis.

Interaction of CH3OH with Cu clusters deposited on ZnO films grown on a Zn foil as well as on a ZnO(0001)Zn crystal, has been examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. On clean Cu clusters, reversible molecular adsorption or formation of CH3O is observed. However if the Cu clusters are pretreated with oxygen, both CH3O and HCOO- species are produced. Model Cu/ZnO catalyst surfaces, containing both Cu1+ and Cu-0 species, show interesting oxidation properties. On a Cu-0-rich catalyst surface, only CH3O species is formed on interaction with CH3OH. On a Cu1+-rich surface, however, HCOO- ion is the predominant species.

Plate-shaped products resulting from martensitic, diffusional, and mixed mode transformations in zirconium-base alloys are compared. in the present study. These alloys are particularly suitable for the comparison in view of the fact that the lattice correspondence between the parent beta (bcc) and the product alpha (hcp) or gamma-hydride (fct) phases are remarkably similar for different types of transformations. Crystallographic features such as orientation relations, habit planes, and interface structures associated with these transformations have been compared:, with a view toward examining whether the transformation mechanisms have characteristic imprints on these experimental observables. Martensites exhibiting dislocated lath, internally twinned plate, and self-accommodating three-plate cluster morphologies have been encountered in Zr-2.5Nb alloy. Habit planes corresponding to all these morphologies have been found to be consistent with the predictions based on the invariant plane strain (IFS) criterion. Different morphologies have been found to reflect the manner in which the neighboring martensite variants are assembled. Lattice-invariant shears (LISs) for all these cases have been identified to be either {10 (1) over bar 1}(alpha) ((1) over bar 123)(alpha) slip or twinning on (10 (1) over bar 1)(alpha) planes. Widmanstatten alpha precipitates, forming in a step-quenching treatment, have been shown to have a lath morphology, the alpha/beta interface being decorated with a periodic array of (c + a) dislocations at a spacing of 8 to 10 nm. The line vectors of these dislocations are nearly parallel to the invariant lines. The alpha precipitates, forming in the retained beta phase on aging, exhibit an internally twinned structure with a zigzag habit plane. Average habit planes for the morphologies have been found to lie near the {103}(beta) - {113}(beta) poles, which are close to the specific variant of the {112}(beta) plane, which transforms into a prismatic plane of the type {1 (1) over bar 00}(alpha). The crystallography of the formation of the gamma-hydride phase (fct) from both the alpha and beta phases is seen to match the IFS predictions. While the beta-gamma transformation can be treated approximately as a simple shear on the basal plane involving a change in the stacking sequence, the alpha-gamma transformation call be conceptually broken into a alpha --> beta transformation following the Burgers correspondence and the simple beta-gamma shear process. The active eutectoid decomposition in the Zr-Cu system, beta --> alpha + beta', has been described in terms of cooperative growth of the alpha phase from the beta phase through the Burgers correspondence and of the partially ordered beta' (structurally similar to the equilibrium Zr2Cu phase) through an ordering process. Similarities and differences in crystallographic features of these transformations have been discussed. and the importance of the invariant line vector in deciding the geometry of the corresponding habit planes has been pointed out.

A methodology based on Claisen rearrangement-Wacker oxidation and intramolecular aldol condensation strategy starting from cyclic ketones leading to spiro[4.n](n+5)alk-2-en-1-ones has been developed. Thus one-pot Claisen rearrangement of the alkyl alcohols 6a-c furnished the aldehydes 8a-c, which on regiospecific oxidation using Wacker conditions generated the keto-aldehydes 9a-c. Finally, intramolecular aldol condensation transformed the keto-aldehydes 9a-c into spiroannulated products 10a-c.

Nanoclusters of bimetallic Pt-Ru are electrochemically deposited on conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT), which is also electrochemically deposited on a carbon paper substrate. The bimetallic deposition is carried out in an acidic electrolyte consisting of chloroplatinic acid and ruthenium chloride at 0.0 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE) on PEDOT coated carbon paper. A thin layer PEDOT on a carbon paper substrate facilitates the formation of uniform, well-dispersed, nano clusters of Pt-Ru of mean diameter of 123 nm, which consist of nanosize particles. In the absence of PEDOT, the size of the clusters is about 251 nm, which are unevenly distributed on carbon paper substrate. Cyclic voltammetry studies suggest that peak currents of methanol oxidation are several times greater on PtRu-PEDOT electrode than on Pt-Ru electrode in the absence of PEDOT. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Diperoxovanadate is effective only in presence of free vanadate in vanadium-dependent bromoperoxidation at physiological pH. Peroxide in the form of bridged divanadate complex (VOOV-type), but not the bidentate form as in diperoxovanadate, is proposed to be the oxidant of bromide. In order to obtain direct evidence, peroxo-divanadate complexes with glycyl-glycine, glycyl-alanine and glycyl-asparagine as heteroligands were synthesized. By elemental analysis and spectral studies they were characterized to be triperoxo-divanadates, [V2O2(O-2)(3)(peptide)(3)]. H2O, with the two vanadium atoms bridged by a peroxide and a heteroligand. The dipeptide seems to stabilize the peroxo-bridge by inter-ligand interaction, possibly hydrogen bonding. This is indicated by rapid degradation of these compounds on dissolving in water with partial loss of peroxide accompanied by release of bubbles of oxygen. The V-51-NMR spectra of such solutions showed diperoxovanadate and decavanadate (oligomerized from vanadate) as the products. Additional oxygen was released on treating these solutions with catalase as expected of residual diperoxovanadate. The solid compounds when added to the reaction mixtures showed transient, rapid bromoperoxidation reaction, but not oxidation of NADH or inactivation of glucose oxidase, the other two activities shown by a mixture of diperoxovanadate and vanadyl. This demonstration of peroxide-bridged divanadate as powerful, selective oxidant of bromide, active at physiological pH, should make it a possible candidate of mimic in the action of vanadium in bromoperoxidase proteins.
