A steel ball was slid on aluminium-silicon alloys at different temperatures. After the coefficient of friction had been measured, the surface shear stress was deconvoluted using a two-term model of friction. The ratio of surface shear stress to bulk hardness was calculated as a function of temperature, silicon content and alloying additions. These results are qualitatively similar to those recorded for pre-seizure specimens slid against an En24 disc in a pin-on-disc machine. This similarity, when viewed in the context of the phenomenon of bulk shear, provides a model for seizure of these alloys.
Hot deformation and microstructural evolution in an alpha(2)/O titanium aluminide alloy Ti-25Al-15Nb
Resumo:
Deformation processing and microstructural development of an alpha(2)/O aluminide alloy Ti-25Al-15Nb (at.%) was studied in the temperature range of 950 to 1200 degrees C and strain rate range of 10(-3) to 100 s(-1). Regions of processing and instability were identified using dynamic materials model. Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of alpha(2)/O phase and p phase were seen to occur in the region of 950 to 1050 degrees C/0.001 to 0.05 s(-1) and 1125 to 1175 degrees C/0.001 to 0.1 s(-1), respectively. Unstable flow was seen to occur in the region of 1050 to 1190 degrees C/10 to 100 s(-1). Thermal activation analysis showed that DRX of alpha(2)/O and beta was controlled by cross-slip.

Nanoparticles of Ag-Pd and Gu-Pd alloys with diameters in the 5-40 nm range have been prepared over the entire range of compositions, by employing the heterogeneous reaction of dry methanol or ethanol with intimate mixtures of AgNO3+PdOx and CuOx+PdOx, respectively. The nanoscale alloys have been characterized by energy-dispersive Xray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). All the alloy particles possess the fee structure and can be obtained in bulk quantities.

The evolution of microstructure and texture during room temperature compression of commercially pure Ti with four different initial orientations were studied under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. At a low strain rate (epsilon)over dot = 3 x 10(-4) s(-1) the different initial textures yielded the same end texture, despite different microstructural evolution in terms of twin boundaries. High strain rate deformation at (epsilon)over dot = 1.5 x 10(3) s(-1) was characterized by extensive twinning and evolution of a texture that was similar to that at low strain rate with minor differences. However, there was a significant difference in the strength of the texture for different orientations that was absent for low strain rate deformed samples at high strain rate. A viscoplastic self-consistent model with a secant approach was used to corroborate the experimental results by simulation. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of Acta Materialia Inc.

A novel phase of nickel hydroxide with an average interlayer spacing 5.4-5.6 Angstrom has been synthesized which is neither ct nor beta type but is an interstratification of both. It ages to the beta form in strong alkali. These observations have implications on the dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism suggested for the alpha-->beta transformation of nickel hydroxide.

Plate-shaped products resulting from martensitic, diffusional, and mixed mode transformations in zirconium-base alloys are compared. in the present study. These alloys are particularly suitable for the comparison in view of the fact that the lattice correspondence between the parent beta (bcc) and the product alpha (hcp) or gamma-hydride (fct) phases are remarkably similar for different types of transformations. Crystallographic features such as orientation relations, habit planes, and interface structures associated with these transformations have been compared:, with a view toward examining whether the transformation mechanisms have characteristic imprints on these experimental observables. Martensites exhibiting dislocated lath, internally twinned plate, and self-accommodating three-plate cluster morphologies have been encountered in Zr-2.5Nb alloy. Habit planes corresponding to all these morphologies have been found to be consistent with the predictions based on the invariant plane strain (IFS) criterion. Different morphologies have been found to reflect the manner in which the neighboring martensite variants are assembled. Lattice-invariant shears (LISs) for all these cases have been identified to be either {10 (1) over bar 1}(alpha) ((1) over bar 123)(alpha) slip or twinning on (10 (1) over bar 1)(alpha) planes. Widmanstatten alpha precipitates, forming in a step-quenching treatment, have been shown to have a lath morphology, the alpha/beta interface being decorated with a periodic array of (c + a) dislocations at a spacing of 8 to 10 nm. The line vectors of these dislocations are nearly parallel to the invariant lines. The alpha precipitates, forming in the retained beta phase on aging, exhibit an internally twinned structure with a zigzag habit plane. Average habit planes for the morphologies have been found to lie near the {103}(beta) - {113}(beta) poles, which are close to the specific variant of the {112}(beta) plane, which transforms into a prismatic plane of the type {1 (1) over bar 00}(alpha). The crystallography of the formation of the gamma-hydride phase (fct) from both the alpha and beta phases is seen to match the IFS predictions. While the beta-gamma transformation can be treated approximately as a simple shear on the basal plane involving a change in the stacking sequence, the alpha-gamma transformation call be conceptually broken into a alpha --> beta transformation following the Burgers correspondence and the simple beta-gamma shear process. The active eutectoid decomposition in the Zr-Cu system, beta --> alpha + beta', has been described in terms of cooperative growth of the alpha phase from the beta phase through the Burgers correspondence and of the partially ordered beta' (structurally similar to the equilibrium Zr2Cu phase) through an ordering process. Similarities and differences in crystallographic features of these transformations have been discussed. and the importance of the invariant line vector in deciding the geometry of the corresponding habit planes has been pointed out.

A reversible pressure-induced phase transition in lanthanum nickel ferrate (LaNi0.5Fe0.5O3) manifests itself in the infrared spectrum of the transition metal-oxygen stretching (nu(TM-O)) modes by the emergence of new peaks at pressures greater than similar to 1.4 x 10(9) Pa. Analogies to this transition are made by considering charge transfer in dilanthanum cuprate (La2CuO4) and its modification by partial substitution of copper ions by chromium ions.

Using a dynamic materials model, processing and instability maps have been developed for near-alpha titanium alloy 685 in the temperature range 775-1025 degrees C and strain-rate range of 0.001-10 s(-1) to optimise its hot workability. The alloy's beta-transus temperature lies at about 1020 degrees C. The material undergoes superplasticity with a peak efficiency of 80% at 975 degrees C and 0.001 s(-1), which are the optimum parameters for alpha-beta working. The occurrence of superplasticity is attributed to two-phase microduplex structure, higher strain-rate sensitivity, low flow stress and sigmoidal variation between log flow stress and log strain rate. The material also exhibits how localisation due to adiabatic shear-band formation up to its beta-transus temperature with strain rates greater than 0.02 s(-1) and thus cracking along these regions. The formation of the metallic glass and crystalline phases and related microstructures and the decomposition behavior of rapidly solidified Ti75Ni25 alloys obtained under different processing conditions have been investigated in detail. The competition between glass transition and nucleation of beta-Ti during rapid solidification leads to the possibility of synthesizing the nanocomposites of beta-Ti and glass. Additionally, it is shown that the presence of a small amount of Si also promotes simultaneous nucleation of fine Ti2Ni intermetallic compound. Thermodynamic calculation of the metastable phase diagram indicates the presence of a metastable eutectic reaction between alpha-Ti and Ti2Ni. Evidence of this reaction at lower cooling rates has been presented. On heating, the glass decomposes through this reaction. Finally, on the basis of understanding of the microstructural evolution during decomposition, a new approach has been adopted to synthesize a nanodispersed composite of alpha-Ti in the crystalline Ti2Ni matrix with a narrow size distribution by controlling the devitrification heat treatment of the metallic glass.

A 1.2 V/1.5 Ah positive-limited nickel/metal hydride cell has been studied to determine its charge-discharge characteristics at different rates in conjunction with its AC impedance data. The faradaic efficiency of the cell is found to be maximum at similar to 70% charge input. The cell has been scaled to a 6 V/1.5 Ah battery. The cycle-life data on the battery suggest that it can sustain a prolonged charge-discharge schedule with little deterioration in its performance.

Nanoparticles of titania were obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of Ti(i-OC3H7)(4) in the reverse micelles of dodecylamine derived from dodecylamine-isopropanol-water solution (water/oil microemulsion). The mesolamellar phase based on titanium nitride (TiN) was obtained by first decomposing TiN atleast partially using the 1:1 solution of acid mixture (HF and HNO3 in the ratio of 9:1) in water and then templating onto the cationic surfactant namely, cetyltrimethylammaniumbromide (abbreviated as CTAB) at 80 degrees C. The synthesis of mesolamellar phase based on TiN involves the charge matched templating approach following the counter-ion mediated pathway. The samples thus obtained were characterized by small angle x-ray diffraction using Cuk(a) radiation, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, which indicated some satisfactory results. Detailed Fourier line shape analysis has been performed on three different compositions of the composite matrix of Al-Si-Mg and SiC. The alloy composition in wt% is Al-7%Si, 0.35%Mg, 0.14%Fe and traces of copper and titanium (similar to 0.01%) with SiC varying from 0 to 30wt% in three steps i.e., 0, 10 and 30wt%. The line shift analysis has been performed by considering 111, 200, 220, 311 and 222 reflections after estimating their relative shift. Peak asymmetry analysis has been performed considering neighbouring 111 and 200 reflections and Fourier line shape analysis has been performed after considering the multiple orders 111 and 222, 200 and 400 reflections. Combining all these three analyses it has been found that the deformation stacking faults both intrinsic alpha' and extrinsic alpha " are absent in this alloy system whereas the deformation twin beta has been found to be positive and increases with the increase of SiC concentration. So, like other Al-base alloys this ternary alloy also shows high stacking fault energy, and the addition of SiC introduces deformation twin which increases with its concentration in the deformed lattices.

Double hydroxides of the formula, Ni1-xZn2x (OH)(2) (CO3)(x). nH(2)O (x = 0.1 to 0.25) having the same structure as that of alpha-nickel hydroxide have been synthesized by partial substitution of zinc for nickel. The hydroxide having the composition x = 0.25 exhibits prolonged stability in 6 M KOH. Pasted electrodes comprising this material are rechargeable with a stabilized reversible discharge capacity of 410 +/- 15 mAh g(-1) of nickel even under suboptimal conditions of electrode fabrication. This compares favorably with the capacity values achieved for beta-nickel hydroxide (221 mAh g(-1)', This work; 297 mAh g(-1), Delahaye-Vidal and Figlarz;(1) 456 mAh g(-1), theoretical). Recently, we demonstrated a very general route to monolithic macroporous materials prepared without the use of templates (Rajamathi et al. J. Mater. Chem. 2001, 11, 2489). The route involves finding a precursor containing two metals, A and B, whose oxides are largely immiscible. Firing of the precursor followed by suitable sintering results in a monolith from which one of the oxide phases can be chemically leached out to yield a macroporous mass of the other oxide phase. The metals A and B that we employed in the demonstration were Ni and Zn. From the NiO-ZnO monolith that was obtained by decomposing the precursor, ZnO could be leached out at high pH to yield macroporous NiO. In the present work, we show that combustion-chemical (also called self-propagating) decomposition of a mixture of Ni and Zn nitrates with urea as a fuel yields an intimate mixture of the oxides that can be sintered and leached with alkali to form a macroporous NiO monolith. The new process that we present here thereby avoids the need for a crystalline single-source precursor. A novel and unanticipated aspect of the present work is that the combination of high temperatures and rapid quenching associated with combustion synthesis results in an intimate mixture of wurtzite ZnO and the metastable rock-salt Ni1-xZnxO where x is about 0.3. Leaching this monolith with alkali gives a macroporous mass of rock-salt Ni1-xZnxO, which upon reduction in H-2/Ar forms macroporous Ni and ZnO. There are thus two stages in the process that lead to two modes of pore formation. The first is associated with leaching of ZnO by alkali. The second is associated with the reduction of porous Ni1-xZnxO to give porous Ni and ZnO.
