This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the untitled, historic nautical chart: [A chart of the Island of Grand Manan, Passamaquody Bay & River]. The map is [sheet 48] from the Atlantic Neptune atlas Vol. 3 : Charts of the coast and harbors of New England, from surveys taken by Samuel Holland and published by J.F.W. Des Barres, 1781. Scale [ca. 1:50,000]. This layer is image 2 of 4 total images of the four sheet source map, representing the southeast portion of the map. Covers portin of the coastline of Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada and Bay of Fundy. The image is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the 'World Mercator' (WGS 84) projected coordinate system. All map collar information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, or other information associated with the principal map. Elemental composition, functional groups, and molecular mass distribution were determined in humic acids from the Western Pacific abyssal and coastal bottom sediments. Humic acid structure was studied by oxidative degradation with alkaline nitrobenzene and potassium permanganate, p-coumaric, guaiacilic, and syringilic structural units typical for lignin of terrestrial plants were identified in humic acids by chromatographic analysis of oxidation products. Polysubstituted and polycondensed aromatic systems with minor proportion of aliphatic structures were basic structural units of humic acids in abyssal sediments.

The metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) transitions of a series of Class II mixed valence dinuclear complexes bearing cyano bridging ligands may be varied systematically by variations to either the hexacyanometallate(II) donor or Co-III acceptor moieties. Specifically, the new dinuclear species trans-[(LCoNCFe)-Co-14S(CN)(5)](-) (L-14S = 6-methyl-1,11-diaza-4,8-dithia- cyclotetradecane-6-amine) and trans-[(LCoNCRu)-Co-14(CN)(5)]-(L-14 = 6-methyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6-amine) have been prepared and their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties are compared with the relative trans-[(LCoNCFe)-Co-14(CN)(5)](-). The crystal structures of Na{trans-[(LCoNCFe)-Co-14S(CN)(5)]}.51/2H(2)O.1/2EtOH, Na{trans-[(LCoNCRu)-Co-14(CN)(5)]}.3H(2)O and Na{trans-[(LCoNCRu)-Co-14(CN)(5)]}.8H(2)O are also reported. The ensuing changes to the MMCT energy have been examined within the framework of Hush theory, and it was found that the free energy change between the redox isomers was the dominant effect in altering the energy of the MMCT transition.

The SAR of Asperlicin analogues is reported, leading to bioactive 1,4-benzodiazepine-2-ones, which were prepared in a 3 step reaction sequence. The Asperlicin substructure was built up using Tryptophan and readily available 2-amino-acetophenones. This template, containing a 1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one moiety with a 3-indolmethyl side chain, was transformed into mono- and di-substituted 3-indol-3 '-yl-methyl-1,4-benzodi-azepine-2-ones by selective alkylation and acylation reactions. The SAR optimization of the 1,4-benzodiazepine scaffold has included variations at the 5-, 7-, 8-position, at the N1, N-indole nitrogen and the configuration of the C3-position. The most active Asperlicin analogue, having an IC50 of 1.6 microM on the CCKA receptor subtype, was obtained from Tryptophan in only 3 steps in an overall yield of 48%.

Phosphorus is a key plant nutrient and as such, is incorporated into growing biomass in small amounts. This paper examines the influence of phosphorus, present in either acid (HPO) or salt ((NH)PO) form, on the pyrolysis behaviour of both Miscanthus × giganteus, and its cell wall components, cellulose, hemicellulose (xylan) and lignin (Organosolv). Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (PY-GC-MS) is used to examine the pyrolysis products during thermal degradation, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is used to examine the distribution of char and volatiles. Phosphorus salts are seen to catalyse the pyrolysis and modify the yields of products, resulting in a large increase in char yield for all samples, but particularly for cellulose and Miscanthus. The thermal degradation processes of cellulose, xylan and Miscanthus samples occur in one step and the main pyrolysis step is shifted to lower temperature in the presence of phosphorus. A small impact of phosphorus was observed in the case of lignin char yields and the types of pyrolysis decomposition products produced. Levoglucosan is a major component produced in fast pyrolysis of cellulose. Furfural and levoglucosenone become more dominant products upon P-impregnation pointing to new rearrangement and dehydration routes. The P-catalysed xylan decomposition route leads to a much simpler mixture of products, which are dominated by furfural, 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one and one other unconfirmed product, possibly 3,4-dihydro-2-methoxy-2H-pyran or 4-hydroxy-5,6-dihydro-(2H)-pyran-2-one. Phosphorus-catalysed lignin decomposition also leads to a modified mixture of tar components and desaspidinol as well as other higher molecular weight component become more dominant relative to the methoxyphenyl phenols, dimethoxy phenols and triethoxy benzene. Comparison of the results for Miscanthus lead to the conclusion that the understanding of the fast pyrolysis of biomass can, for the most part, be gained through the study of the individual cell wall components, provided consideration is given to the presence of catalytic components such as phosphorus.

Novel reaction pathways for the hypervalent iodine-mediated oxidation of bioactive phenols containing extended conjugated π-systems are described. Oxidation of 4-hydroxystilbenes in methanol using a hypervalent iodine-based oxidant led to the formal 1,2-addition of methoxy groups across the central stilbene double bond. Treatment of the structurally related 4-hydroxyisoflavone with di(trifluoroacetoxy)iodobenzene leads to the surprising formation of 2,4′-dihydroxybenzil. Potential mechanisms for these new reaction pathways are discussed, and the X-ray crystal structure of 2,4′-dihydroxybenzil is presented. In contrast, oxidation of the corresponding 3-hydroxystilbenes and 3-hydroxyisoflavone led to conventional dienone oxidation products. The antitumour implications of these oxidation processes are briefly highlighted; the novel 4-substituted phenolic oxidation products were found to be inactive in terms of in vitro antitumour cellular activity, whereas the 3-substituted phenol products gave novel agents with potent and enhanced antitumour activity in the HCT 116 cancer cell line. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2005.

I. The target molecules are classified as 1-aryl 2-cyclopropyl substituted ethylene. In the ground state, these molecules have a number of conformers, which are in equilibrium through rotation about single bonds. Once excited, the conformers have fixed conformation and are no longer in equilibrium and can be distinguished by their UV-vis as well as fluorescence spectra. The synthetic strategy involves standard steps. Both 2-methylanthracene and 2-methylnaphthalene were brominated using N-bromosuccinimide to give the bromomethyl adduct, which then was reacted with triphenylphosphine to form the phosphonium salt. This was followed by the formation of the phosphorus ylide, which upon treatment with cyclopropanecarboxaldehyde gave the product.^ II. The degradation of three aliphatic haloethers: bis-(2-chloroethyl) ether, bis-(2-chloroisopropyl) ether, and bis-(2-chloroethoxy)methane and two aromatic haloethers: 4-chlorodiphenyl ether and 4-bromodiphenyl ether was studied. Product studies have been conducted on the titanium dioxide photocatalysis of these compounds including mass balance, monitoring and identifying intermediates to establish the reaction pathways to deduce a mechanism for their degradation. The extent of mineralization was determined from the measurement of halogen anion (Cl$\sp-$/Br$\sp-$) as well as total organic carbon. The relative rates of disappearance of the individual haloethers appear to be related to the hydrophobic character of the given compound. Reaction mechanisms involving hydroxyl radical are proposed to explain the observed results. ^

The chemical composition of surface associated metabolites of two Fucus species (Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus serratus) was analysed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to describe temporal patterns in chemical surface composition. Method: The two perennial brown macroalgae F. vesiculosus and F. serratus were sampled monthly at Bülk, outer Kiel Fjord, Germany (54°27'21 N / 10°11'57 E) over an entire year (August 2012 - July 2013). Per month and species six non-fertile Fucus individuals were collected from mixed stands at a depth of 0.5 m under mid water level. For surface extraction approx. 50 g of the upper 5-10 cm apical thalli tips were cut off per species. The surface extraction of Fucus was performed according to the protocol of de Nys and co-workers (1998) with minor modifications (see Rickert et al. 2015). GC/EI-MS measurements were performed with a Waters GCT premier (Waters, Manchester, UK) coupled to an Agilent 6890N GC equipped with a DB-5 ms 30 m column (0.25 mm internal diameter, 0.25 mM film thickness, Agilent, USA). The inlet temperature was maintained at 250°C and samples were injected in split 10 mode. He carrier gas flow was adjusted to 1 ml min-1. Alkanes were used for referencing of retention times. Antecedentes: Las dificultades alimentarias son problemas de los niños para comer con efectos en su crecimiento y desarrollo. La prevalencia de dificultades alimentarias está entre 25-45% en niños con desarrollo normal y hasta 80% en niños con retraso del desarrollo. La conducta alimentaria del niño depende de las prácticas del cuidador. Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre dificultades alimentarias de niños de 2 a 4 años de dos Centros de Desarrollo Infantil Privados Urbanos de Cuenca y los factores de riesgo: estrategias del cuidador para la alimentación de los niños y niñas, el tipo y nivel de instrucción del cuidador. Método: Estudio cuantitativo transversal realizado en 228 niños de 2 a 4 años de los Centros de Desarrollo Infantil Urbanos de Cuenca: CEIAP de la Universidad del Azuay y los Angelitos de la FEUE, aplicando a los cuidadores dos cuestionarios CCDA-N1-APS y el FSQ. Resultados: La cuidadora principal es la madre (79,4%), el nivel de instrucción del cuidador fue el superior (51,3%). La prevalencia de dificultades alimentarias fue del 28%. No existe relación estadística entre dificultades alimentarias (p>0,05), y el tipo y nivel de instrucción del cuidador. Las estrategias del cuidador que demostraron relación con dificultades alimentarias y factores de riesgo son: estructura a la hora de comer, permitirle tener juguetes durante comidas, puede elegir la cantidad de alimento que quiere, presionarle a comer mas de lo que debe, permitirle comer y beber durante todo el día (p<0,05); el tener un esquema de alimentación es factor protector. Los datos concuerdan con la literatura. Conclusiones: Es necesario evaluar las estrategias del cuidador para la alimentación y dificultades alimentarias. Faced with the continued emergence of antibiotic resistance to all known classes of antibiotics, a paradigm shift in approaches toward antifungal therapeutics is required. Well characterized in a broad spectrum of bacterial and fungal pathogens, biofilms are a key factor in limiting the effectiveness of conventional antibiotics. Therefore, therapeutics such as small molecules that prevent or disrupt biofilm formation would render pathogens susceptible to clearance by existing drugs. This is the first report describing the effect of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa alkylhydroxyquinolone interkingdom signal molecules 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4-quinolone and 2-heptyl-4-quinolone on biofilm formation in the important fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. Decoration of the anthranilate ring on the quinolone framework resulted in significant changes in the capacity of these chemical messages to suppress biofilm formation. Addition of methoxy or methyl groups at the C5–C7 positions led to retention of anti-biofilm activity, in some cases dependent on the alkyl chain length at position C2. In contrast, halogenation at either the C3 or C6 positions led to loss of activity, with one notable exception. Microscopic staining provided key insights into the structural impact of the parent and modified molecules, identifying lead compounds for further development.

Isatin, an indole alkaloid has been shown to have anti-microbial, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects. Due to its findings, we evaluated whether this alkaloid would have any effect on TNBS-induced colitis. Animals (male Unib:WH rats, aged 8 weeks old) were induced colitis through a rectal administration of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid using a catheter inserted 8 cm into the rectum of the animals. The rats were divided into two major groups: non-colitic and colitic. The colitic group was sub-divided into 6 groups (10 animals per group): colitic non-treated, Isatin 3; 6; 12.5; 18.75 and 25 mg/kg. Our main results showed that the oral treatment with Isatin 6 and 25 mg/kg were capable of avoiding the increase in TNF-α, COX-2 and PGE₂ levels when compared to the colitic non-treated group. Interestingly, the same doses (6 and 25 mg/kg) were also capable of preventing the decrease in IL-10 levels comparing with the colitic non-treated group. The levels of MPO, (an indirect indicator of neutrophil presence), were also maintained lower than those of the colitic non-treated group. Isatin also prevented the decrease of SOD activity and increase of GSH-Px and GSH-Rd activity as well as the depletion of GSH levels. In conclusion, both pre-treatments (6 and 25 mg/kg) were capable of protecting the gut mucosa against the injury caused by TNBS, through the combination of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which, together, showed a protective activity of the indole alkaloid Isatin.
