Introduction

The PACLIM workshops celebrated their tenth anniversary from April 4 to 7, 1993. The location, as for each of the previous meetings, was the beautiful grounds of the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California. The setting is emblematic of the concerns of those who attend: tucked in amidst the vegetation, a short stroll away from the zone where the land and the ocean and the atmosphere have long continued a meeting of their own, although a meeting with a far more ancient pedigree.

ENSO influences on atmospheric circulation and precipitation in the western United States

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): The influence of ENSO on atmospheric circulation and precipitation over the western United States is presented from two perspectives. First, ENSO-associated circulation patterns over the North Pacific/North America sector were identified using an REOF (rotated empirical orthogonal function) analysis of the 700-mb height field and compositing these for extreme phases of the Southern Oscillation Index. ... Second, we examine the variability of precipitation during the warm and cool phases of ENSO for different locations in the western United States.

Recent winters in the western United States and relationship to ENSO patterns [abstract]

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): In the mountainous western United States, winter weather has consequences for the entire year, especially with respect to the use of water. For most of the past 6-8 years, drought has been a persistent feature of the climate.

Demonstration of time division demultiplexing from 40Gb/s to 10Gb/s via polarisation switching in a semiconductor optical amplifier

An all-optical polarization rotation technique was demonstrated for demultiplexing a 40 Gb/s return-to-zero optical time division de/multiplexing (OTDM) signal. A sensitivity penalty of 3.5 dB was achieved for the total multiplexing/demultiplexing process from 10Gb/s to 40 Gb/s and back again.

Recent progress in high-bit-rate applications of four-wave-mixing in SOAs

Non-linearities in semiconductor optical amplifiers have been used to demonstrate a wide range of functions applicable to future optical networks such as wavelength conversion and optical switching. Four-wave-mixing effects in SOAs have been studied extensively in many laboratories with respect to the underlying physical processes and system applications. At BT Labs an optimization of SOAs for FWM has been achieved by altering the device active layer composition and by increasing the device length. We will review recent progress at BT Labs in dispersion compensation, wavelength conversion and demultiplexing at bit-rates of 40 Gbit/s using these devices.

Design and commissioning of a 30kw direct drive wave generator

The Trident Energy TE5 is a prototype wave energy converter operating on the principle of having direct-drive linear generators mounted above the water surface, coupled to floats moving under the rig deck. This paper describes aspects of the TE5 design, including its generators, power electronic systems and the conception of its marine structure.

Just under half of all energy consumption in the UK today takes place indoors, and over a quarter within our homes. The challenges associated with energy security, climate change and sustainable consumption will be overcome or lost in existing buildings. A background analysis, and the scale of the engineering challenge for the next three to four decades, is described in this paper.

Thickness control of Molecular Beam Epitaxy grown layers at the 0.01-0.1 monolayer level

Electron tunnelling through semiconductor tunnel barriers is exponentially sensitive to the thickness of the barrier layer, and in the most common system, the AlAs tunnel barrier in GaAs, a one monolayer variation in thickness results in a 300% variation in the tunnelling current for a fixed bias voltage. We use this degree of sensitivity to demonstrate that the level of control at 0.06 monolayer can be achieved in the growth by molecular beam epitaxy, and the geometrical variation of layer thickness across a wafer at the 0.01 monolayer level can be detected.
