Salivary gland cells of Drosophila mulleri/D. arizonensis aneuploid male hybrids carrying 3 microchromosomes exhibited morphological features which indicate heterochromatinization of one of the small polytene chromosomes. The process apparently changes the chromosome surface producing a coating with a net-like structure and a strong affinity for lacto-acetic orcein. The possibility of a dosage compensatory mechanism operating to counteract the effect of the extra chromosome is discussed on the basis of previous data which indicated that the microchromosomes of these species have ribosomal cistrons and are controlled by regulatory mechanisms especially evident in hybrids. © 1981 Dr W. We investigated the mechanisms of the alterations in sensitivity to catecholamines in right atria from female rats exhibiting regular 4-day estrous cycles after three foot-shock sessions at estrus, metestrus, and diestrus or at diestrus, proestrus, and estrus. Right atria from stressed rats sacrificed at diestrus showed subsensitivity to noradrenaline and adrenaline. After in vitro sympathetic denervation (38 μM 6-hydroxydopamine) plus inhibition of neuronal reuptake (0.1 μM desipramine) subsensitivity to noradrenaline was abolished, but it was again evident when extraneuronal uptake was also inhibited (10 μM phenoxybenzamine and 30 μM corticosterone). The same pretreatment abolished the subsensitivity to adrenaline. After addition of 1 μM butoxamine, a β2-adrenoceptor antagonist, the tissues from stressed rats were subsensitive to adrenaline. Right atria from stressed rats sacrificed at estrus did not show any alteration in sensitivity to catecholamines. We conclude that after foot-shock stress, right atria from female rats sacrificed at diestrus showed subsensitivity of the chronotropic response to catecholamines as a result of a conformational alteration of β1-adrenoceptors, simultaneously with an increase in β2-adrenoceptor-mediated response. The mechanisms seem to be similar to those which underlie stress-induced alterations in catecholamine sensitivity in right atria from male rats. However, during estrus there are some protective factors that prevent the effects of stress on right atria.

Jurumirim is a large tropical reservoir with remarkable spatial gradients. This structure seems to be determined by a longitudinal gradient in the trophic conditions along the main axis of the reservoir. Nutrient-rich waters enter from the main tributary river, Paranapanema, and towards the dam there is a lacustrine zone that is deeper and more oligotrophic. Additional variability is derived from two important lateral components: the entrance of the Taquari River, the second largest tributary, bringing waters with higher pH and alkalinity; and the Ribeirão das Posses arm, a sheltered bay where the hydrodynamic conditions promote a high growth of phytoplankton. However, such a spatial pattern is not static. It can become either more defined, during the dry season (late autumn and winter), or less evident, during the expansion of the lotic conditions in the rainy period (late spring and summer). Seasonal processes of stratification/destratification determine the temporal changes in the lacustrine zone but, unlike the upstream regions, the dam zone of the reservoir seems to be little affected by periodic pulses of modifications produced by intensive rains. The presence of extensive wetlands and oxbow lagoons in the mouth zones of the main rivers also constitutes an important source of spatial variability and should be considered in the future.

Non-linear electrical properties of SnO2-based ceramics were investigated as a function of powder agglomeration condition and as a function of dopant addition. All doped powders presented a single phase, cassiterite, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction analysis. The effect of milling was quite evident, with non-milled powder showing higher agglomerated particle size than milled powder. Cr addition seemed to increase the non-linear coefficient. Cu and Mn rendered dense ceramics, but α values for systems with Mn were higher than for systems with Cu.

Dairy cows often have to choose which of two sides to enter in the milking parlour. Some cows are very consistent in this choicė, and it is common to assume that when these cows are more disturbed are being milked in their non-preferred side. Such disturbance might involve significantly poor welfare. In order to assess this assumption, we decided to study the behaviour and milk yield of dairy cows and their relationships with side preference in the milking parlour. The study was carried out at Cambridge University Farm, in a two-sided tandem milking parlour. The data collection followed the daily management routine. We recorded the side chosen by each cow (left or right) during 40 milking sessions. Data from 70 cows, which were present in at least 25 milking sessions (mode = 36), were included in the statistical analysis. Cows' reactivity (CR) during premilking udder preparation, time spent fitting the milking cluster (FT), milk yield (MY) and duration of milking (DM) were measured. There was evident individual variation in the consistency of side choice. Individual differences (ANOVA, P < 0.001) were also found in CR, FT, MY and DM; although these variables were not significantly affected by the side or the interaction animal × side (ANOVA, P < 0.05). The comparison between left and right side means (paired t-test) of these variables did not show significant differences (P < 0.05). We concluded that there is no evidence that the cows were discomforted or stressed when milked in the non-preferred side of the milking parlour. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

The genus Leptodactylus provides an example among anurans in which there is an evident tendency toward terrestrial reproduction. Herein we describe a new reproductive mode for the frog Leptodactylus podicipinus, a member of the melanonotus group. This new reproductive mode represents one of the intermediate steps from the most aquatic to the most terrestrial modes reported in the genus. Three reproductive modes were previously recognized for the genus Leptodactylus. However, based on our data, and on several studies on Leptodactylus species that have been published since the last reviews, we propose a new classification, with the addition of two modes for the genus.

The aim of our study was to analyze the morphological events in the skeletal muscle of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after a traumatic lesion. Thirty-two fish were used, on which a small longitudinal incision was made in the muscle. The fish were sacrificed after 7, 14, 21, and 42 days and muscle samples were collected from the lesion and processed for morphological analysis. Muscle regeneration in the tilapia occurred gradually through the analyzed period, possibly due to the proliferation and differentiation of myosatellite cells, which were more morphologically evident 7 and 14 days after lesion.

Background: The treatment of cyclosporin A triggers an early bone loss and gingival overgrowth. There is a lack of studies exploring the effects of long-term cyclosporin A therapy on alveolar bone homeostasis and gingival tissue. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of long-term therapy with cyclosporin A on the gingival tissue and on the alveolar bone metabolism in rats. Materials and methods: Rats were treated for 60, 120, 180 and 240 days with a daily subcutaneous injection of 10 mg/kg body weight of cyclosporin A. At the end of experimental periods, animals were killed and the serum calcium (Ca2+) and alkaline phosphatase levels were measured in all groups. After histological processing, the oral epithelium and the connective tissue, as well as volume densities of alveolar bone (Vb) and multinucleated osteoclasts (Vo), were assessed at the region of the lower first molars. Results: Significant increases in the serum alkaline phosphatase were observed in those groups that received cyclosporin A therapy. After 60 and 120 days of the treatment with cyclosporin A, evident gingival overgrowth associated with a significant increase of epithelium and connective tissue was observed, as well as a decrease of the densities of bone and an increase of densities of osteoclasts. After 180 and 240 days of the treatment, there was a reduction of the gingival overgrowth associated with significant decreases of epithelium and connective tissue, as well as an increase of bone densities and a decrease of osteoclasts. Conclusion: Within the limits of this experimental study, it can be concluded that the deleterious periodontal effects of cyclosporin A administration may be time-related side-effects. © Blackwell Munksgaard, 2004.

Lanthanum-modified bismuth titanate, Bi4 - xLaxTi3O12 (BLT) ceramics, with x ranging from 0 to 0.75 were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Orthorhombicity of the system is decreased with the increase of lanthanum content in the bismuth titanate (BIT) crystal lattice. No secondary phases were evident after lanthanum addition. Increasing lanthanum content causes a structural distortion in the bismuth titanate lattice. The shape of the grains is strongly influenced by the lanthanum added to the system. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. The aim of this study is to compare polyurethanes containing castor oil (soft segment) in granular form compared to cancellous bone autograft applied to a segmental bone defect. Norfolk adult female rabbits - approximately 13 months of age with a mean body weight of 4.5 kg - are used. In both radial diaphyses, 1 cm osteoperiosteal segmental defects are created. The defect in the left radius is filled with the castor-oil-based polyurethane, and the right one, filled with cancellous bone autograft, collected from the left proximal humerus. The rabbits are euthanazed at 15, 30, 60, and 120 days postsurgery (5 animals/ period), for histological analyses. By radiographic analyses, at these time points, the bone regeneration is more evident and accelerated in the bone defects treated with the cancellous bone autograft. At 120 days postsurgery, the segmental bone defects treated with the cancellous bone autograft are totally reconstituted and remodeled, while the bone defects treated with polyurethane polymer have bone formation of 79%. Histological study shows that the polyurethane acts as a space filler, minimizing the local production of fibrous tissue. No granule degradation, resorption or any inflammatory reaction is detected. Thus, it is possible to conclude that the castor-oil-plant-based polyurethane - in the granule presentation - is biocompatible and osteointegrated, but does not show the same bone regeneration capacity as the cancellous bone autograft. © 2007 SAGE Publications.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vivo the biocompatibility of Endométhasone, Pulp Canal Sealer EWT and AHPlus root canal sealers after implantation in rat connective tissue. Twenty-four Wistar-Furth rats were used. Polyethylene tubes were filled with the sealers and implanted into specific dorsal subdermal tissue sites of the rats. Implants were removed after 3, 7 and 30 days, fixed and processed for glycol methacrylate-embedding technique to be examined microscopically. On the 3rd day, there was a mild inflammatory reaction to Pulp Canal Sealer EWT implants, but a severe response to the other sealers with presence of acute inflammatory cells. On the 7th day, tissue organization was more evident with attenuation of the inflammatory reaction, especially for the AH-Plus implants. On the 30th day, connective tissue with few inflammatory cells was observed in contact with all sealer implants. In this time interval, the tissue in contact with Pulp Canal Sealer EWT implants was more organized, while the tissue close to Endométhasone and AH-Plus implants showed a mild persistent inflammatory reaction and had similar results to each other. In conclusion, the sealers had a similar pattern of irritation, which was more severe in the beginning and milder with time, in such a way that all sealers showed a persistent mild reaction. Pulp Canal Sealer EWT yielded better tissue organization than Endométhasone and AH-Plus, which, in turn, showed similar results to each other.

The ant Paratrechina longicornis is a cosmopolitan ant species that has been accidentally spread by commerce around the world, and now is a pest of houses and hospitals. The morphology of its larval stages has been previously described without knowledge of the number of instars. The present study revisits the original description of P. longicornis larvae by adding differences observed among the three larval instars. Compared to other Paratrechina species studied so far, P. longicornis presents smaller larvae, less evident variation in mandible morphology, and clear variation in the morphology of head hairs between the analysed specimens of the second and third instar larvae. Ultrastructural images of the eggs, larval spiracle ornamentation, and pupae are also presented for the first time. Copyright © 2007 - Magnolia Press.
