Workforce planning identifies the composition of the workforce required to deliver health service goals. It encompasses a range of human resource activities aimed at the short, medium and long-term. Workforce planning that is integrated with service and financial planning offers the best opportunity for linking human resource decisions to the strategic goals for the health services. Systems and structures are required to support and develop workforce planning activities

Planners, policy makers and practitioners across all sectors in England use a range of approaches to assess health needs, inform decisions and assess impact. Use of these approaches can lead to improved health outcomes and reduced inequalities through auditing provision, access and outcomes. Five main approaches are used by local, regional and national government, voluntary agencies and the NHS: ۢ Health needs assessment (HNA) ۢ Health impact assessment (HIA) ۢ Integrated impact assessment (IIA) ۢ Health equity audit (HEA) ۢ Race equality impact assessment (REIA)

The pigments and the plasters of the Roman frescoes discovered at the House of Diana (Cosa, Grosseto, Italy) were analysed using non-destructive and destructive mineralogical and chemical techniques. The characterization of both pigments and plasters was performed through optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. The pigments were identified by Raman spectroscopy and submitted to stable isotope analysis. The results were integrated with the archaeological data in order to determine and reconstruct the provenance, trade patterns and the employment of the raw materials used for the elaboration of the frescoes.

Proposes a behavior-based scheme for high-level control of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Two main characteristics can be highlighted in the control scheme. Behavior coordination is done through a hybrid methodology, which takes in advantages of the robustness and modularity in competitive approaches, as well as optimized trajectories

We investigate whether dimensionality reduction using a latent generative model is beneficial for the task of weakly supervised scene classification. In detail, we are given a set of labeled images of scenes (for example, coast, forest, city, river, etc.), and our objective is to classify a new image into one of these categories. Our approach consists of first discovering latent ";topics"; using probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (pLSA), a generative model from the statistical text literature here applied to a bag of visual words representation for each image, and subsequently, training a multiway classifier on the topic distribution vector for each image. We compare this approach to that of representing each image by a bag of visual words vector directly and training a multiway classifier on these vectors. To this end, we introduce a novel vocabulary using dense color SIFT descriptors and then investigate the classification performance under changes in the size of the visual vocabulary, the number of latent topics learned, and the type of discriminative classifier used (k-nearest neighbor or SVM). We achieve superior classification performance to recent publications that have used a bag of visual word representation, in all cases, using the authors' own data sets and testing protocols. We also investigate the gain in adding spatial information. We show applications to image retrieval with relevance feedback and to scene classification in videos

This paper proposes a hybrid coordination method for behavior-based control architectures. The hybrid method takes advantages of the robustness and modularity in competitive approaches as well as optimized trajectories in cooperative ones. This paper shows the feasibility of applying this hybrid method with a 3D-navigation to an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The behaviors are learnt online by means of reinforcement learning. A continuous Q-learning implemented with a feed-forward neural network is employed. Realistic simulations were carried out. The results obtained show the good performance of the hybrid method on behavior coordination as well as the convergence of the behaviors

This paper describes a method to achieve the most relevant contours of an image. The presented method proposes to integrate the information of the local contours from chromatic components such as H, S and I, taking into account the criteria of coherence of the local contour orientation values obtained from each of these components. The process is based on parametrizing pixel by pixel the local contours (magnitude and orientation values) from the H, S and I images. This process is carried out individually for each chromatic component. If the criterion of dispersion of the obtained orientation values is high, this chromatic component will lose relevance. A final processing integrates the extracted contours of the three chromatic components, generating the so-called integrated contours image

We present a system for dynamic network resource configuration in environments with bandwidth reservation and path restoration mechanisms. Our focus is on the dynamic bandwidth management results, although the main goal of the system is the integration of the different mechanisms that manage the reserved paths (bandwidth, restoration, and spare capacity planning). The objective is to avoid conflicts between these mechanisms. The system is able to dynamically manage a logical network such as a virtual path network in ATM or a label switch path network in MPLS. This system has been designed to be modular in the sense that in can be activated or deactivated, and it can be applied only in a sub-network. The system design and implementation is based on a multi-agent system (MAS). We also included details of its architecture and implementation

Process supervision is the activity focused on monitoring the process operation in order to deduce conditions to maintain the normality including when faults are present Depending on the number/distribution/heterogeneity of variables, behaviour situations, sub-processes, etc. from processes, human operators and engineers do not easily manipulate the information. This leads to the necessity of automation of supervision activities. Nevertheless, the difficulty to deal with the information complicates the design and development of software applications. We present an approach called "integrated supervision systems". It proposes multiple supervisors coordination to supervise multiple sub-processes whose interactions permit one to supervise the global process

BACKGROUND. Bioinformatics is commonly featured as a well assorted list of available web resources. Although diversity of services is positive in general, the proliferation of tools, their dispersion and heterogeneity complicate the integrated exploitation of such data processing capacity. RESULTS. To facilitate the construction of software clients and make integrated use of this variety of tools, we present a modular programmatic application interface (MAPI) that provides the necessary functionality for uniform representation of Web Services metadata descriptors including their management and invocation protocols of the services which they represent. This document describes the main functionality of the framework and how it can be used to facilitate the deployment of new software under a unified structure of bioinformatics Web Services. A notable feature of MAPI is the modular organization of the functionality into different modules associated with specific tasks. This means that only the modules needed for the client have to be installed, and that the module functionality can be extended without the need for re-writing the software client. CONCLUSIONS. The potential utility and versatility of the software library has been demonstrated by the implementation of several currently available clients that cover different aspects of integrated data processing, ranging from service discovery to service invocation with advanced features such as workflows composition and asynchronous services calls to multiple types of Web Services including those registered in repositories (e.g. GRID-based, SOAP, BioMOBY, R-bioconductor, and others).

Materials/Methods: Four patients who underwent whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) and simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) between August 2010 and February 2011 were included to this study. Their age were 60, 61, 65, and 70 years. Primary diagnosis was infiltrative ductal breast cancer in two patients, sigmoid adenocarcinoma in one, and transitional bladder cancer in the other patient. All patients underwent cranial surgery but not all of the metastases were operated in 2 patients. All but one (five metastases) patient presented with single brain metastasis. In 2 of the 4 patients, hippocampus was spared contralaterally due to vicinity of the lesions to unilateral hippocampus. Planning irradiation dose was 30 Gy in 10 fractions for WBRT and 40 Gy in 10 fractions for SIB over two weeks in three patients. In one patient, WBRT and boost doses were 36Gy and 50.4 Gy in 18 fractions. Our maximum dose constraints for hippocampus and eyes were 10 and 20 Gy, respectively. All organs were contoured manually. Hippocampi were contoured according to published guidelines, and 5-mm margin expansion was used for hippocampal avoidance volume. All plans utilized a field width of 2.5 cm. Modulation factors ranged between 2 and 3.5. A pitch of 0,287 was used for all patients. All plans were evaluated according to conformity index (CI), homogeneity index (HI), target coverage (TC), and mean normalized total dose (NTDmean). An alpha/beta ratio of 2 was assumed for the hippocampus. Results: Median planning target volume (PTV) for metastases was 17.47 cc.Median hippocampal avoidance volume was 14.73 cc (range, 9.25-16.18 cc). Median average hippocampaldose was 11.84 Gy (range, 10.14-21.01 Gy). PTVs were fully covered with more than 95% of the prescribed dose for all patients. With a median follow-up time of 6 months (range, 3-9 months), all patients were alive without recurrent intracranial disease. To date, no neurocognitive decline reported in any of the patients. Conclusions: Preclinical evidence suggests that hippocampal sparing during cranial irradiation may mitigate neurocognitive decline. Using HT, we significantly reduced the mean dose to the hippocampus without jeopardizing coverage of metastases and whole brain.

Oncogenesis is closely linked to abnormalities in cell differentiation. Notch signaling provides an important form of intercellular communication involved in cell fate determination, stem cell potential and differentiation. Here we review the role of this pathway in the integrated growth/differentiation control of the keratinocyte cell type, and the maintenance of normal skin homeostasis. In parallel with the pro-differentiation function of Notch1 in keratinocytes, we discuss recent evidence pointing to a tumor suppressor function of this gene in both mouse skin and human cervical carcinogenesis. The possibility that Notch signaling elicits signals with a duality of growth positive and negative function will be discussed.
