Physical integration of Mercosur-Bolivia-Chile-Peru: The potential contribution of the railway systems

This edition of the Bulletin highlights sections of a recent study carried out by the Transport Unit of ECLAC on behalf of the Institute for Latin American Integration (INTAL) entitled Physical Integration of Mercosur-Bolivia- Chile-Peru: the potential contribution of the railway systems. One of the conclusions stresses the need for the railway and other companies involved in the construction of any major project to sign formal agreements relating to the allocation of freight, track utilization fees and other factors on which operation of the railway to be constructed will depend.

Analysis of railway privatization in Latin America and the Caribbean

Latin American railway privatization has achieved significant results, since the situation today is better than if the railways had remained under management and operation by the State. Traffic volumes have generally increased, although with wide variations between individual cases; government subsidies have been cut, and productivity has improved. On the other hand, the privatization of railways in Latin America has not been an unqualified success, because of certain features of the privatization models used and the environment of the transport sector in which the railways have to compete.

Protección social para la infancia en El Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras: avances y desafíos

El presente documento es un estudio comparado con una mirada subregional de la protección social a la infancia en tres países centroamericanos: El Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras. Se realizó con base en tres documentos generados en el marco de la iniciativa multi-país en protección social para la niñez y la adolescencia liderada por la UNICEF en los tres países indicados. Estos documentos abordan, a partir de un diagnóstico, la situación de las políticas de protección social que estos países implementan desde un enfoque de niñez y adolescencia, dando cuenta de las brechas de protección social que esta población enfrenta.

Using GIS to Locate Areas for Growing Quality Coffee in Honduras

Abstract Small-scale coffee producers worldwide remain vulnerable to price fluctuations after the 1999-2003 coffee crisis. One way to increase small-scale farmer economic resilience is to produce a more expensive product, such as quality coffee. There is growing demand in coffee-producing and coffee-importing countries for user-friendly tools that facilitate the marketing of quality coffee. The purpose of this study is to develop a prototypical quality coffee marketing tool in the form of a GIS model that identifies regions for producing quality coffee in a country not usually associated with quality coffee, Honduras. Maps of areas for growing quality coffee were produced with information on climate, soils, topography, areas vulnerable to environmental degradation, the location of current quality coffee farms, and infrastructure. The maps depict suitable coffee-growing land in portions of eight western Honduran departments.
