Isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of a syndiotactic polypropylene(sPP) sample synthesized by new metallocene catalyst at different annealing temperatures and different cooling rates have been investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and density analysis. The equilibrium melting temperature( T-m(0)) is 158 degrees C by Hoffman-Weeks method. The equilibrium heat of fusion(Delta H-m(0)) is 88J/g in terms of the density analysis and DSC methods. The lateral and end surface free energies derived from the Lauritzen-Hoffman spherulitic growth rate equation are sigma = 5.2erg/cm(2) and sigma(e) = 69erg/cm(2), respectively. The work of chain folding is determined to be q = 33.75kJ/mol. Modified Avrami equation and Ozawa equation can be used to describe the non-isothermal crystallization behavior. And a new and convenient approach by combining the Avrami equation and Ozawa equation in a same crystallinity is used to describe the non-isothermal behavior as well. The crystallization activation energies are evaluated to be 73.7kJ/mol and 73.1kJ/mol for isothermal crystallization and non-isothermal crystallization, respectively. The Avrami exponent n is 1.5 similar to 1.6 for isothermal crystallization procedure, while the Avrami exponent n,is 2.5 similar to 3.5 for non-isothermal crystallization procedure. This indicated the difference of nucleation and growth between the two procedures.

A new crystal modification induced by strain and denoted as form II exists alongside the dominant form I structure in the uniaxially oriented poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and the related polymers. The crystal structure of form II for PEEK is also found to possess a two-chain orthorhombic packing with unit cell parameters of a equal to 0.475 nm, b equal to 1.060 nm, and c equal to 1.086 nm. More extended and flattened chain conformation of form II relative to that of form I is expected to account for an 8% increase in c-axis dimension, which is attributed to the extensional deformation fixed in situ through strain-induced crystallization during uniaxial drawing. Annealing experiments suggest that form II is thermodynamically metastable and can be transformed into more stable form I by chain relaxation and reorganization at elevated temperature without external tension. This strain-induced polymorphism exists universally in the poly(aryl ether ketone) family. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k(s)) of dimethylferrocene (DMFc) was estimated using cyclic voltammetric peak potential separations taken typically in a mixed diffusion geometry regime in a polyelectrolyte, and the diffusion coefficient (D) of DMFc was obtained using a steady-state voltammogram. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant and diffusion coefficient are both smaller by about 100-fold in the polymeric solvent than in the monomeric solvent. The results are in agreement with the difference of longitudinal dielectric relaxation time (tau(L)) in the two kinds of solvents, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and CH3CN, indicating that k(s) varies inversely with tau(L); k(s), is proportional to D of DMFc. Both D and k(s) of DMFc in PEG containing different supporting electrolytes and at different temperatures have been estimated. These results show that D and k(s) of DMFc increase with increasing temperature in the polyelectrolyte, whereas they vary only slightly with changing the supporting electrolyte.

Isothermal and nonisothermal melt crystallization kinetics of a novel poly(aryl ether ketone), PEDEKK, were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Several kinetic analyses were used to describe the crystallization behavior. The activation energies were determined as 425 and 176 KJ/mol for isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization, respectively. The equilibrium melting point T-m(o) was estimated to be 444 degrees C by using the Hoffman-Weeks approach. The observed crystallization characteristics of PEDEKK were compared with those of the other members of the poly(arpl ether ketone) family.

Analysis of the isothermal, and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of Nylon-11 is carried out using differential scanning calorimetry. The Avrami equation and that modified by Jeziorny can describe the primary stage of isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization of Nylon-11. In the isothermal crystallization process, the mechanism of spherulitic nucleation and growth are discussed; the lateral and folding surface free energies determined from the Lauritzen-Hoffman equation are sigma = 10.68 erg/cm(2) and sigma(e) = 110.62 erg/cm(2); and the work of chain folding q = 7.61 Kcal/mol. In the nonisothermal crystallization process, Ozawa analysis failed to describe the crystallization behavior of Nylon-ii. Combining the Avrami and Ozawa equations, we obtain a new and convenient method to analyze the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of Nylon-11; in the meantime, the activation energies are determined to be -394.56 and 328.37 KJ/mol in isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization process from the Arrhonius form and the Kissinger method. This paper presents a microelectrode voltammetric determination of heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k(s)) and diffusion coefficients (D) of 7,7,8',8 '-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in polyelectrolytes. The diffusion coefficients are estimated using cyclic voltammetry under linear diffusion conditions, and the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants are obtained under mixed linear and radial diffusion in the polyelectrolyte. k(s) and D increase with increasing temperature, and the activation barriers of the electrode reaction for reduction of TCNQ are obtained. On the other hand, the dependencies of D and k(s) of TCNQ on the size and charge of the counterion are compared in the polyelectrolyte. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

C-2 and LaC2+ were studied using Hartree-Fock(HF), B3LYP (Becke 3-paremeter-Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional method, second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) and coupled cluster singles and doubles with non-iterative triples(CCSD(T)) methods. The basis set employed was LANL1DZ. Geometries, vibrational frequencies and other quantities were reported. The results showed that for C-2, all the methods performed well for low spin state (singlet), while only HF and B3LYP remained so for high spin state (triplet). For LaC2+, four isomers were presented and fully optimized. The results suggested that linear isomers with C-infinity v and D-infinity h symmetries were predicted to be saddle points on the energy surface for all the methods, while for isomers with C-2 upsilon and C-s symmetries, they were local minima except C-2 upsilon at B3LYP level, and were isoenergetic at HF, MP2 and CCSD(T) levels, near isoenergetic at B3LYP level. From the differences between HOMO and LUMO, it is also known that the isomers with C-2 upsilon and C-s symmetries offer the largest values and therefore correspond to the most stable structure. For La-C bond lengths, B3LYP gives the shortest, the order is B3LYP<HF

Structural studies of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) using small-angle X-ray scattering and one-dimensional electron density correlation function methods revealed that its aggregated state structure was significantly influenced by the annealing temperature. The long period L, the average thickness of the lamellae d, the electron density difference between the crystalline and amorphous regions eta(c) - eta(a), and the invariant Q increased with increasing annealing temperature, but it was opposite to the case of the specific inner surfaces O-s. A transition zone existed between the traditional "two phases" with a dimension about 0.5 nm for semicrystalline PEEKK. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 69: 1829-1835, 1998.

LaC2 (with doublet and quartet states) and LaC2+ (with singlet and triplet states) cluster have been studied by using the B3LYP (Becke three-parameter/Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional method and the HF (Hartree-Fock) method with LANLIDZ basis set. For each cluster, four possible isomers in C-2v, C-s, C-proportional to v and D-proportional to h symmetries have been investigated. The results indicate that structures in C-s symmetry are local minima in all cases and, in most cases (particularly for high spin states), our initial guess in C-s symmetry converges to structures in C-2v symmetry. For the isomers in C-2v, C-proportional to v and D-proportional to h symmetries, local minima were found to be dependent on the method and spin state. The two clusters may also exist as linear chains. The ordering of the binding energies for the isomers in all spin states is C-s similar to C-2v < C-proportional to v < D-proportional to h. This paper introduces a new method to estimate the diffusion coefficient and transference number of a salt or an electroactive ion in a solution with little or no supporting electrolyte. The above two parameters can be obtained from a single potential step experiment without previous knowledge of either one. It would appear that the method could also be used in the study of ion transport in a high viscosity solvent or a solid electrolyte. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

The diffusion coefficients (D) of quinhydrone were estimated in polymer electrolytes by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry and steady-state current voltammetry. The D values have been estimated in polyethylene glycol (PEG) containing different concentrations, and cations of supporting electrolytes, and in different solvents over a range of temperatures. The dependencies of electroactive probe diffusion coefficients on temperature, supporting electrolyte concentration and polymer chain length are discussed. The results show that D increases with increasing temperature and decreasing concentration of supporting electrolyte. The diffusion coefficient depends strongly on the length of polymer chain and decreases sharply with increasing polymer chain length. The contribution of electron self-exchange has been explored and it seems to be negligible here. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k(s)) of seven ferrocene derivatives were estimated using cyclic voltammograms under mixed spherical/semi-infinite linear diffusion and steady-state voltammetry at a microdisk electrode in polymer electrolyte. The k(s) and diffusion coefficient (D) are both 100 to 1000-fold smaller in polymer solvent than in monomeric solvents, and the D and k(s) decrease with increasing polymer chain length. The results conform to the difference of viscosity (eta) or relaxation time (tau(L)) for these different solvents. The k(s) and D increase with increasing temperature, and the activation barriers of the electrode reaction are obtained. The influences of the substituting group in the ferrocene ring on k(s) and D are discussed. The k(s) are proportional to the D of the ferrocene derivatives, which indicates that solvent dynamics control the electrode reaction. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

Nonisothermal melt crystallization kinetics of PEDEKmK linked by meta-phenyl and biphenyl was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A convenient and reasonable kinetic approach was used to describe the nonisothermal melt crystallization behavior, and its applicability was verified when the modified Avrami analysis by the Jeziorny and Ozawa equation were applied to the crystallization process. The crystallization activation energy was estimated to be -219 kJ/mol by Kissinger method while crystallizing from the PEDEKmK melt nonisothermally. These observed crystallization characteristics were compared to those of the other members of poly(aryl ether ketone) family. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
