A system capable of deployment as a microwave security sensor which can automatically reject background clutter is presented. The principle of operation is based on analog homodyne detection using 1. Q single side-band down conversion of an AM backscattered modulating signal envelope. A demonstrator is presented which operates with a carrier frequency of 2 GHz and 500 KHz backscattered signal. When deployed in a multipath rich open plan office environment the S/N ratio obtained at the detection output was better than 20 dB at 20 in range with 20 dBm EIRP in a 2 MHz detection bandwidth despite the presence of time varying and static clutter. Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) provide viable targets for the treatment of multiple central nervous system disorders. We have used cheminformatics and medicinal chemistry to develop new, highly selective M4 allosteric potentiators. VU10010, the lead compound, potentiates the M4 response to acetylcholine 47-fold while having no activity at other mAChR subtypes. This compound binds to an allosteric site on the receptor and increases affinity for acetylcholine and coupling to G proteins. Whole-cell patch clamp recordings revealed that selective potentiation of M4 with VU10010 increases carbachol-induced depression of transmission at excitatory but not inhibitory synapses in the hippocampus. The effect was not mimicked by an inactive analog of VU10010 and was absent in M4 knockout mice. Selective regulation of excitatory transmission by M4 suggests that targeting of individual mAChR subtypes could be used to differentially regulate specific aspects of mAChR modulation of function in this important forebrain structure.

Twenty-eight novel salts with tetramethyl-, tetraethyl-, and tetrabutylammonium and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cations paired with 3,5-dinitro-1,2,4-triazolate, 4-nitro-1,2,3-triazolate, 2,4-dinitroimidazolate, 4,5-dinitroimidazolate, 4,5-dicyanoimidazolate, 4-nitroimidazolate, and tetrazolate anions have been prepared and characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and single-crystal Xray crystallography. The effects of cation and anion type and structure on the physicochemical properties of the resulting salts, including several ionic liquids, have been examined and discussed. Ionic liquids (defined as having m.p. <100 degrees C) were obtained with all combinations of the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation ([C(4)mim](+)) and the heterocyclic azolate anions studied, and with several combinations of tetraethyl or tetrabutylammonium cations and the azolate anions. The [C(4)mim](+) azolates were liquid at room temperature exhibiting large liquid ranges and forming glasses on cooling with glasstransition temperatures in the range of -53 to -82 degrees C (except for the 3,5-dinitro-1,2,4-triazolate salt with m.p. 33 degrees C). Six crystal structures of the corresponding tetraalkylammonium salts were determined and the effects of changes to the cations and anions on the packing of the structure have been investigated.

Twelve novel 1,3-dialkylimidazolium salts containing strongly electron-withdrawing nitro-and cyano-functionalities directly appended to the cationic heterocyclic rings have been synthesized; the influences of the substituents on both formation and thermal properties of the resultant ionic liquids have been determined by DSC, TGA, and single crystal X-ray diffraction, showing that an electron-withdrawing nitro-substituent can be successfully appended and has a similar influence on the melting behaviour as that of corresponding methyl group substitution. Synthesis of di-, or trinitro-substituted 1,3-dialkylimidazolium cations was unsuccessful due to the resistance of dinitro-substituted imidazoles to undergo either N-alkylation or protonation, while 1-alkyl- 4,5-dicyanoimidazoles were successfully alkylated to obtain 1,3-dialkyl-4,5-dicyanoimidazolium salts. Five crystal structures ( one of each cation type) show that, in the solid state, the NO2-group has little significant effect, beyond the steric contribution, on the crystal packing.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that the self-perception of dental and facial attractiveness among patients requiring orthognathic surgery is no different from that of control patients.
Materials and Methods: Happiness with dental and facial appearance was assessed using questionnaires completed by 162 patients who required orthognathic treatment and 157 control subjects. Visual analog scale, binary, and open response data were collected. Analysis was carried out using a general linear model, logistic regression, and chi-square tests.
Results: Orthognathic patients were less happy with their dental appearance than were controls. Class II patients and women had lower happiness scores for their dental appearance. Among orthognathic patients, the "shape" and "prominence" of their teeth were the most frequent causes of concern. Older subjects, women, and orthognathic patients were less happy with their facial appearance. Class III orthognathic patients, older subjects, and women were more likely to have looked at their own face in profile. A greater proportion of Class II subjects than Class III subjects wished to change their appearance.
Conclusions: The hypothesis is rejected. The findings indicate that women and patients requiring orthognathic surgery had lower levels of happiness with their dentofacial appearance. Although Class II patients exhibited the lowest levels of happiness with their dental appearance, there was some evidence that concerns and awareness about their facial profile were more pronounced among the Class III patients.

PURPOSE:
Treatment options for older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who are not considered suitable for intensive chemotherapy are limited. We assessed the second-generation purine nucleoside analog, clofarabine, in two similar phase II studies in this group of patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
Two consecutive studies, UWCM-001 and BIOV-121, recruited untreated older patients with AML to receive up to four or six 5-day courses of clofarabine. Patients in UWCM-001 were either older than 70 years or 60 to 69 years of age with poor performance status (WHO > 2) or with cardiac comorbidity. Patients in BIOV-121 were >or= 65 years of age and deemed unsuitable for intensive chemotherapy.
RESULTS:
A total of 106 patients were treated in the two monotherapy studies. Median age was 71 years (range, 60 to 84 years), 30% had adverse-risk cytogenetics, and 36% had a WHO performance score >or= 2. Forty-eight percent had a complete response (32% complete remission, 16% complete remission with incomplete peripheral blood count recovery), and 18% died within 30 days. Interestingly, response and overall survival were not inferior in the adverse cytogenetic risk group. The safety profile of clofarabine in these elderly patients with AML who were unsuitable for intensive chemotherapy was manageable and typical of a cytotoxic agent in patients with acute leukemia. Patients had similar prognostic characteristics to matched patients treated with low-dose cytarabine in the United Kingdom AML14 trial, but had significantly superior response and overall survival.
CONCLUSION:
Clofarabine is active and generally well tolerated in this patient group. It is worthy of further evaluation in comparative trials and might be of particular use in patients with adverse cytogenetics.

A synthesis of new bidentate pyridines has been developed, starting from ?-pinene. A copper complex of the pyridine-oxazoline ligands catalyzes asym. allylic oxidn. of cyclic olefins with good conversion rates and acceptable enantioselectivity (?67% ee). The imidazolium salt I has been identified as a precursor of the N,N'-unsym. N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, which upon complexation with palladium, catalyzed the intramol. amide enolate ?-arylation leading to oxindole in excellent yield but with low enantioselectivity.
[[omega-(Heterocyclylamino)alkoxy]benzyl]-2,4-thiazolidinediones as potent antihyperglycemic agents.

A series of [(ureidoethoxy)benzyl]-2,4-thiazolidinediones and [[(heterocyclylamino)alkoxy]benzyl]-2,4-thiazolidinediones was synthesized from the corresponding aldehydes. Compds. from the urea series, exemplified by I, showed antihyperglycemic potency comparable with known agents of the type such as pioglitazone and troglitazone (CS-045). The benzoxazole II, a cyclic analog of I, was a very potent enhancer of insulin sensitivity, and by modification of the arom. heterocycle, an aminopyridine, III, was identified as a lead compd. from SAR studies. Evaluation of antihyperglycemic activity together with effects on blood Hb content, to det. the therapeutic index, was performed in 8-day repeat administration studies in genetically obese C57 B1/6 ob/ob mice. From these studies, III (BRL 49653) has been selected, on the basis of antihyperglycemic potency combined with enhanced selectivity against redns. in blood Hb content, for further evaluation.

Rhizopus delemar lipase catalyzed ester hydrolysis of the alpha-methoxy-beta-phenylpropanoate (I) affords the (R)-(+) and (S)-(-) isomers in > 84% enantiomeric excess. Abs. stereochem. was detd. by a single crystal X-ray anal. of a related synthetic analog. The activity of these two enantiomers on glucose transport in vitro and as anti-diabetic agents in vivo is reported and their unexpected equivalence attributed to an enzyme-mediated stereospecific isomerization of the (R)-(+) isomer. Binding studies using recombinant human PPAR-gamma (peroxisomal proliferator activated receptor gamma), now established as a mol. target for this compd. class, indicate a 20-fold higher binding affinity for the (S) antipode relative to the (R) antipode.

The nonlinear propagation of ion-acoustic waves is considered in a magnetized plasma, composed of kappa distributed electrons and an inertial ion fluid. The fluid-dynamical system of equations governing the dynamics of ion-acoustic waves is reduced to a pseudoenergy-balance equation. The properties of arbitrary amplitude, obliquely propagating ion-acoustic solitary waves are thus investigated via a mechanical-motion analog (Sagdeev potential) approach. The presence of excess superthermal electrons is shown to influence the nature of magnetized ion-acoustic solitons. The influence on the soliton characteristics of relevant physical parameters such as obliqueness (the angle between soliton propagation direction and magnetic field), the electron deviation from a Maxwellian ("superthermality") and the soliton speed is investigated.

The -phonons of KH2PO4 (KDP) and its deuterated analog DKDP are studied via first-principles linear response calculations. The paraelectric phase shows two instabilities. One for a z-polarized mode, which leads to the spontaneous polarization Ps of the ferroelectric phase. The other corresponds to a two-fold degenerate xy-polarized mode. Other phonons are analyzed, which couple to the ferroelectric one at large amplitudes and are relevant for the ferroelectric transition. We show that Ps is mainly of electronic nature, since it arises mostly from an off-diagonal component of the Born effective charge tensor of H, with minor contribution from P atoms displacements.

Understanding the determinants of resistance of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) is of significant value to optimizing administration of the drug, and introducing novel agents and treatment strategies. Here, the expression of 92 genes involved in 5FU transport, metabolism, co-factor (folate) metabolism and downstream effects was measured by real-time PCR low density arrays in 14 patient-derived colorectal cancer xenografts characterized for 5FU resistance. Candidate gene function was tested by siRNA and uridine modulation, and immunoblotting, apoptosis and cell cycle analysis. Predictive significance was tested by immunohistochemistry of tumors from 125 stage III colorectal cancer patients treated with and without 5FU. Of 8 genes significantly differentially expressed between 5FU sensitive and resistant xenograft tumors, CTPS2 was the gene with the highest probability of differential expression (p = 0.008). Reduction of CTPS2 expression by siRNA increased the resistance of colorectal cancer cell lines DLD1 and LS174T to 5FU and its analog, FUDR. CTPS2 siRNA significantly reduced cell S-phase accumulation and apoptosis following 5FU treatment. Exposure of cells to uridine, a precursor to the CTPS2 substrate uridine triphosphate, also increased 5FU resistance. Patients with low CTPS2 did not gain a survival benefit from 5FU treatment (p = 0.072), while those with high expression did (p = 0.003). Low CTPS2 expression may be a rationally-based determinant of 5FU resistance.

In this work, we report on the significance of gate-source/drain extension region (also known as underlap design) optimization in double gate (DG) FETs to improve the performance of an operational transconductance amplifier (OTA). It is demonstrated that high values of intrinsic voltage gain (A(VO_OTA)) > 55 dB and unity gain frequency (f(T_OTA)) similar to 57 GHz in a folded cascode OTA can be achieved with gate-underlap channel design in 60 nm DG MOSFETs. These values correspond to 15 dB improvement in A(VO_OTA) and three fold enhancement in f(T_OTA) over a conventional non-underlap design. OTA performance based on underlap single gate SOI MOSFETs realized in ultra-thin body (UTB) and ultra-thin body BOX (UTBB) technologies is also evaluated. A(VO_OTA) values exhibited by a DG MOSFET-based OTA are 1.3-1.6 times higher as compared to a conventional UTB/UTBB single gate OTA. f(T_OTA) values for DG OTA are 10 GHz higher for UTB OTAs whereas a twofold improvement is observed with respect to UTBB OTAs. The simultaneous improvement in A(VO_OTA) and f(T_OTA) highlights the usefulness of underlap channel architecture in improving gain-bandwidth trade-off in analog circuit design. Underlap channel OTAs demonstrate high degree of tolerance to misalignment/oversize between front and back gates without compromising the performance, thus relaxing crucial process/technology-dependent parameters to achieve 'idealized' DG MOSFETs. Results show that underlap OTAs designed with a spacer-to-straggle (s/sigma) ratio of 3.2 and operated below a bias current (IBIAS) of 80 mu A demonstrate optimum performance. The present work provides new opportunities for realizing future ultra-wide band OTA design with underlap DG MOSFETs.

In this paper, gain-bandwidth (GB) trade-off associated with analog device/circuit design due to conflicting requirements for enhancing gain and cutoff frequency is examined. It is demonstrated that the use of a nonclassical source/drain (S/D) profile (also known as underlap channel) can alleviate the GB trade-off associated with analog design. Operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) with 60 nm underlap S/D MOSFETs achieve 15 dB higher open loop voltage gain along with three times higher cutoff frequency as compared to OTA with classical nonunderlap S/D regions. Underlap design provides a methodology for scaling analog devices into the sub-100 nm regime and is advantageous for high temperature applications with OTA, preserving functionality up to 540 K. Advantages of underlap architecture over graded channel (GC) or laterally asymmetric channel (LAC) design in terms of GB behavior are demonstrated. Impact of transistor structural parameters on the performance of OTA is also analyzed. Results show that underlap OTAs designed with spacer-to-straggle ratio of 3.2 and operated below a bias current of 80 microamps demonstrate optimum performance. The present work provides new opportunities for realizing future ultra wide band OTA design with underlap DG MOSFETs in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. Joule heat-induced hot-spot formation sets severe limits in the operation of continuous annular electrochromatography (CAEC), a new concept for preparative separation as an analog to analytical capillary electrochromatography (CEC). This may lead to eluent flow perturbance, even to boiling, which would massively weaken separation efficiency and may even hamper the stationary phase used for separation. For reasons of system integration and high-efficiency heat transfer, micro flow heat exchangers are considered with a separate coolant flow. A 3D numerical analysis of the heat transfer of water single-phase laminar flow in a square microchannel and different arrays of micro pin-fins was carried out using COMSOL Multiphysics. Several advanced materials with low electric conductivity and at the same time with high heat conductivity were put forward to be used in the CAEC system. As essential design point, it is proposed to constitute the micro heat exchanger from two different parts of the CAEC system, namely a microstructured pin-fins plate and a so-called conductive plate.
