The solid-solution-particle reinforced W(Al)-Ni composites were successfully fabricated by using mechanical alloying (MA) and hot-pressing (HP) technique when the content of Ni is between 45 wt% and 55 wt%. Besides, samples of various original component ratio of Al50W50 to Ni have been fabricated, and the corresponding microcomponents and mechanical properties such as microhardness, ultimate tensile strength and elongation were characterized and discussed. The optimum ultimate tensile strength under the experiment conditions is 1868 MPa with elongation of 10.21 % and hardness of 6.62 GPa. X-ray diffraction (XRD), FE-SEM and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDS) were given to analysis the components and morphology of the composite bulk specimens.

A new route based on electrospinning is designed for the preparation of silver chloride/polyacrylonitrile (AgCl/PAN) composite nanofibres. The AgCl nanoparticles uniform in size, were dispersed on the surfaces of the composite nanofibres. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images gave direct evidence of the structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the presence of AgCl crystals.

A composite film composed of porous polyurethane (PU) and polystyrene (PS) microspheres with both superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity has been prepared. In this film, the dual-scale structure enhances both the hydrophobicity and oleophilicity of the surface material. The composite film with such an 'intelligent' wettability property can be utilized to separate oil and water systems efficiently.

Uniform core-sheath nanofibers are prepared by electrospinning a water-in-oil emulsion in which the aqueous phase consists of a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solution in water and the oily phase is a chloroform solution of an amphiphilic poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(L-lactic acid) (PEGPLA) diblock copolymer. The obtained fibers are composed of a PEO core and a PEG-PLA sheath with a sharp boundary in between. By adjusting the emulsion composition and the emulsification parameters, the overall fiber size and the relative diameters of the core and the sheath can be changed. A mechanism is proposed to explain the process of transformation from the emulsion to the core-sheath fibers, i.e., the stretching and evaporation induced de-emulsification. In principle, this process can be applied to other systems to prepare core-sheath fibers in place of concentric electrospinning and it is especially suitable for fabricating composite nanofibers that contain water-soluble drugs.

A sol-gel derived ceramic-carbon composite electrode is used for fabrication of a new type of optical fiber biosensor based on luminol electrochemiluminescence (ECL). The electrode consists of graphite powder impregnated with glucose oxidase in a silicate network. In this configuration, the immobilized enzyme oxidizes glucose to liberate hydrogen peroxide and graphite powder provides percolation conductivity for triggering the ECL between luminol and the liberated hydrogen peroxide. Both of the reactions occur simultaneously on the surface of the composite electrode, thereby the response of the biosensor is very fast. The peak intensity was achieved within only 20 s after glucose injection. In addition, the electrode could be renewed by a simple mechanical polishing step in case of contamination or fouling. The linear range extends from 0.01 to 10 mM for glucose and the detection limit is about 8.16 muM. The renewal repeatability and stability of the biosensor are also investigated in detail.

The ac impedance plots of ( PEO)(16) LiClO4-EC composite polymer electrolytes were studied. The equivalent circuit of stainless steel electrode(SS)/composite electrolyte/SS system was applied to explain the ac impedance plots, The results showed that the equivalent circuit could fit the experimental data very well. The ionic conductivity was calculated using the bulk resistance that was obtained from equivalent circuit. The effect of EC on the conductive behavior was explained by the interactions among different species formed in the composite polymer electrolytes. For lower EC concentration samples, the temperature dependence of conductivity in low temperature range followed Arrhenius type, but when EC concentration was larger than 20%, the temperature dependence of conductivity obeyed the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equation in all temperature ranges.

A composite polymer electrolyte of Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-LiClO4 containing fine Al2O3 particles was studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Compared with the polymer electrolyte without Al2O3 particles, the glass transition temperature and the degree of crystallinity were decreased, and the room temperature conductivity of PEO-LiClO4-Al2O3 composite polymer electrolyte was considerably enhanced. Moreover, the equivalent circuits and the effect of dc potential on impedance spectroscopy were discussed.

A composite solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) of (PEO)(10)LiClO4-Al2O3 was prepared and Pt and stainless steel(SS) blocking electrodes were used for an impedance study. It was found that the semicircle in the high frequency range and the straight line in the low frequency range depend upon different blocking electrodes and polarization potentials applied in the experiments. In the equivalent circuit. two constant phase elements (CPE) have been used instead of the pure geometrical and double layer capacitances. respectively. A theoretical line calculated from their estimated values has a good correlation with the experiment data. Moreover. the equivalent circuit also can be used to explain the impedance properties of Pt and stainless steel (SS) blocking electrodes both in the high and the low frequency ranges. The reinforcement effect of an acicular inorganic filler, tremolite, on nylon 66 was studied. The mechanical properties of tremolite-filled nylon 66 composites and the effect of the filler particle size on them were obtained. The dynamic mechanical properties and rheological properties of the composites were measured. Two treatments, silane and unsaturated polyester, were used to improve the interface between tremolite and the nylon matrix. The morphologies of the composites were investigated using SEM. Phase behavior, thermal, theological and mechanical properties plus morphology have been studied for a binary polymer blend. The blend is phenolphthalein polyethersulfone (PES-C) with a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP), a condensation copolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with ethylene terephthalate (PHB-PET). It was found that these two polymers form optically isotropic and homogeneous blends by means of a solvent casting method. The homogeneous blends undergo phase separation during heat treatment. However, melt mixed PES-C/PHB-PET blends were heterogeneous based upon DSC and DMA analysis and SEM examination. Addition of LCP in PES-C resulted in a marked reduction of melt viscosity and thus improved processability. Compared to pure PES-C, the charpy impact strength of the blend containing 2.5% LCP increased 2.5 times. Synergistic effects were also observed for the mechanical properties of blends containing < 10% LCP. Particulates, ribbons, and fibrils were found to be the typical morphological units of PHB-PET in the PES-C matrix, which depended upon the concentration of LCP and the processing conditions.

A novel polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-reinforced multilayer self-humidifying composite membrane is developed. The membrane is composed of Nafion-impregnated porous PTFE composite as the central layer and nanosized SiO2 supported Pt catalyst imbedded into Nafion as the two side layers. The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells employing the self-humidifying membrane (20 mu m thick) under dry H-2/O-2 gave a peak power density of 0.95 W/cm(2) and an open-circuit voltage of 1.032 V. The good membrane performance is attributed to hygroscopic Pt-SiO2 catalyst at the two side layers, which results in enhanced anode side self-humidification function and decreased cathode polarization. For efficient use of metal oxides, such as MnO(2) and RuO(2), in pseudocapacitors and other electrochemical applications, the poor conductivity of the metal oxide is a major problem. To tackle the problem, we have designed a ternary nanocomposite film composed of metal oxide (MnO(2)), carbon nanotube (CNT), and conducting polymer (CP). Each component in the MnO(2)/CNT/CP film provides unique and critical function to achieve optimized electrochemical properties. The electrochemical performance of the film is evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, and constant-current charge/discharge cycling techniques. Specific capacitance (SC) of the ternary composite electrode can reach 427 F/g. Even at high mass loading and high concentration of MnO(2) (60%), the film still showed SC value as high as 200 F/g. The electrode also exhibited excellent charge/discharge rate and good cycling stability, retaining over 99% of its initial charge after 1000 cycles. The results demonstrated that MnO(2) is effectively utilized with assistance of other components (fFWNTs and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) in the electrode. Such ternary composite is very promising for the next generation high performance electrochemical supercapacitors.

An etched long-period grating was used as a refractive index sensor for vapours of four volatile organic compounds, i.e. m-xylene, cyclohexane, trichloroethylene and commercial gasoline. The sensitivity to the vapours was further increased by solid-phase microextraction into a coating made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/polymethyl-octylsiloxane (PMOS) co-polymer. By further amplification of the optical loss in an optical cavity made of two identical fiber-Bragg gratings and interrogation by phase-shift cavity ring-down spectroscopy we could detect and distinguish xylene (detection limit: 134ppm) from trichloroethylene (3300ppm), cyclohexane (1850ppm) and gasoline (10,500ppm).

This article investigates the damage imparted on load-bearing carbon fibers during the 3D weaving process and the subsequent compaction behavior of 3D woven textile preforms. The 3D multi-layer reinforcements were manufactured on a textile loom with few mechanical modifications to produce preforms with fibers orientated in the warp, weft, and through-the-thickness directions. Tensile tests were conducted on three types of commercially available carbon fibers, 12k HTA, 6k HTS, and 3k HTS in an attempt to quantify the effect of fiber damage induced during the 3D weaving process on the mechanical and physical performance of the fiber tows in the woven composite. The tests were conducted on fiber tows sampled from different locations in the manufacturing process from the bobbin, through the creel and loom mechanism, to the final woven fabric. Mechanical and physical testing were then conducted to quantify the tow geometry, orientation and the effect of compaction during manufacture of two styles of 3D woven composite by vacuumassisted resin transfer molding (VaRTM).
