Although stress has been a longstanding issue in organizations and management studies, it has never been studied in relation to Public Service Motivation. This article therefore aims to integrate PSM into the job demands-job resources model of stress in order to determine whether PSM might contribute to stress in public organizations. Drawing upon original data from a questionnaire in a Swiss municipality, this study unsurprisingly shows that "red tape" is an antecedent of stress perception, whereas satisfaction with organizational support, positive feedback, and recognition significantly decrease the level of perceived stress. Astonishingly, the empirical results show that PSM is positively and significantly related to stress perception. By increasing individuals' expectations towards their jobs, PSM might thus contribute to increased pressure on public agents. Ultimately, this article investigates the "dark side" of PSM, which has been neglected by the literature thus far.

Using a direct binding assay based on photoaffinity labeling, we have studied the interaction of an antigenic peptide with MHC class I molecules and the TCR on living cells. Two photoreactive derivatives of the H-2Kd (Kd) restricted Plasmodium berghei circumsporozoite (PbCS) peptide 253-260 (YIPSAEKI) were used. The first derivative contained an N-terminal photoreactive iodo, 4-azido salicyloyl (IASA) group and biotin on the TCR contact residue Lys259 [IASA-YIPSAEK(biotin)I]. As previously described, this derivative selectively bound to and labeled the Kd molecule. The second photoreactive compound, the isomeric biotin-YIPSAEK(IASA)I, also efficiently bound to the Kd molecule, but failed to label this protein. A CTL clone derived from a mouse immunized with this derivative recognized this conjugate but not the parental P. berghei circumsporozoite peptide or the [IASA-YIPSAEK-(biotin)I] derivative in an Kd-restricted manner. Incubation of the cloned CTL cells with biotin-YIPSAEK(IASA)I, but not its isomer, followed by UV irradiation resulted in photoaffinity labeling of the TCR-alpha chain that was dependent on the conjugate binding to the Kd molecule. The TCR labeling was partially inhibited by anti-LFA 1 and anti-ICAM1 mAb, but was increased by addition of beta 2m or soluble KdQ10. The exquisite labeling selectivity of the two photoprobes opens a new, direct approach to the molecular analysis of antigen presentation and recognition by living CTL.

Introduction: Sleep disordered breathing with central apnea or hypopnea frequently occurs during sleep at high altitude. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of added dead space (DS) on sleep disordered breathing and transcutaneous CO2 (PtcCO2) level during sleep at high altitude. Methods: Full night sleep recordings were obtained on 12 unacclimatized mountaineers (11 males, 1 female, mean age 39 ± 12 y.o.) during one of the first 4 nights after arrival in Leh, Ladakh (3500 m). In random order, half of the night was spent with a 500 ml increase in dead space through a custom designed full face mask and the other half without it. PtcCO2 was measured in 3 participants. Results: Baseline recordings reveled two clearly distinct groups: one with severe sleep disordered breathing (n = 5) and the other with mild or no disordered breathing (n = 7). Added dead space markedly improved breathing in the first group (baseline vs DS): apnea hypopnea index (AHI) 70.3 ± 25.8 vs 29.4 ± 6.9 (p = 0.013), oxygen desaturation index (ODI): 72.9 ± 24.1/h vs 42.5 ± 14.4 (p = 0.031), whereas it had no significant effect in the second group. Added dead space did not have a significant effect on mean oxygen saturation level. Respiratory events were almost exclusively central apnea or hypopnea except for one subject. Only a minor increase in mean PtcCO2 (n = 3) was observed: 33.6 ± 1.8 mm Hg at baseline and 35.0 ± 2.62 mm Hg with DS. Sleep quality was preserved under dead space condition, since the microarousal rate remained unchanged (16.8 ± 8.7/h vs 19.4 ± 18.6/h (p = 0.51). Conclusion: In mountaineers with severe sleep disordered breathing at high altitude, a 500 ml increase in dead space through a fitted mask significantly improves nocturnal breathing.

The objective of this work was to analyze the morphological, morphometrical, and histological characteristics of eggs of four triatomine bugs species still not studied, in order to understand phylogenetic aspects and to facilitate parameters used in taxonomy, with the purpose of a specific and generic characterization of these vectors in public health. The eggs of each species had come from the collections of the Laboratory of Triatomine bugs and Culicid mosquitoes of the Faculdade de Saúde Pública - USP (Faculty of Public Health/USP). The morphologic studies were carried out through optic microscopy (OM) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The eggs were measured with the help of the digital paquimeter Starrett® 727. In relation to histological measures, Microtome Leica RM 2145® was used. Similarities were evidenced in the exocorial architecture of the eggs when they were studied by OM and SEM. This similarity among the eggs suggests a recent speciation, probably derived from common ancestry, representing a monophyletic group. Some structures were also detected by the histological cuts. The study has contributed to the magnification and recognition in generic and specific terms of the Triatominae subfamily. These new data will be able to subsidize a better understanding to determine roles for each vector species and to facilitate parameters to be used in taxonomy.

Background The 'database search problem', that is, the strengthening of a case - in terms of probative value - against an individual who is found as a result of a database search, has been approached during the last two decades with substantial mathematical analyses, accompanied by lively debate and centrally opposing conclusions. This represents a challenging obstacle in teaching but also hinders a balanced and coherent discussion of the topic within the wider scientific and legal community. This paper revisits and tracks the associated mathematical analyses in terms of Bayesian networks. Their derivation and discussion for capturing probabilistic arguments that explain the database search problem are outlined in detail. The resulting Bayesian networks offer a distinct view on the main debated issues, along with further clarity. Methods As a general framework for representing and analyzing formal arguments in probabilistic reasoning about uncertain target propositions (that is, whether or not a given individual is the source of a crime stain), this paper relies on graphical probability models, in particular, Bayesian networks. This graphical probability modeling approach is used to capture, within a single model, a series of key variables, such as the number of individuals in a database, the size of the population of potential crime stain sources, and the rarity of the corresponding analytical characteristics in a relevant population. Results This paper demonstrates the feasibility of deriving Bayesian network structures for analyzing, representing, and tracking the database search problem. The output of the proposed models can be shown to agree with existing but exclusively formulaic approaches. Conclusions The proposed Bayesian networks allow one to capture and analyze the currently most well-supported but reputedly counter-intuitive and difficult solution to the database search problem in a way that goes beyond the traditional, purely formulaic expressions. The method's graphical environment, along with its computational and probabilistic architectures, represents a rich package that offers analysts and discussants with additional modes of interaction, concise representation, and coherent communication.

Abstract "The spatial and social stakes of an interethnic dynamics in transition in the downtown area. The construction of the various forms of representations in order to define an urban quarter in Nice" The general objective of this PHD is to define the specificity of an urban space located in the downtown area with social and interethnic dynamics. Specifically the diverse ethnic form and sign to include the understanding mariner where society has lived in a specific urban context. The particularity of this work is to advance an analytic method using two disciplines: geography and sociology, in order to bring up a transdisciplinarian research with a common method. The ethnic quarters in the inner-city area are not presented as fixed spaces, since frequent changes were observed in the population level and at the allotment level of the commercial premises and the lodgings. Defined as "undetermined future spaces" as their future in the urban structure or the social relations can not be foresee and are supposed to be subjective to many changes. Therefore speaking of "mutations spaces". The option of this type of thematic research is the study of the principle of representation and essential form which shows and produces the images. Research promotes a dynamic analyses of the interethnic phenomena, inside the constructivist which is focused the practices of social actors, their own representations, and products of a social construction. The production of analytical approach is necessary in order to consider the analyses of the research worker and the objective and subjective reality of the life of the urban actors. It gathers the residents, tradesmen, members of associations, politicians and the press. The association of these types of approach define a urban quarter.

BACKGROUND Job satisfaction of nurses is a determinant factor in the quality and organizational adaptation of clinical management models in the current socio-economic context. The aim of this study was to construct and validate a questionnaire to measure job satisfaction of nurses in the Clinical Management Units in the Andalusian Public Health System. METHODS Clinimetric and cross-sectional study with a sample of 314 nurses of two university hospitals from Seville. Nurses were surveyed in 2011, from March to June. We used the Font Roja questionnaire adapted to our study variables. We performed analyses of correlations, reliability and construct validity, using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test the a priori model. RESULTS The end questionnaire consists of 10 items, whose internal consistency was 0.75, with a percentage of variance explaining of 63.67%. CFA confirmed 4 dimensions (work environment, work relationships, motivation, and recognition): significant χ2 (p < .001); χ2/gl = 2.013; GFI= 0.958, RMR = 0.055 y RMSEA = 0.057; AGFI = 0.927, NFI = 0.878, TLI = 0.902, CFI =0.933 e IFI = 0.935; AIC = 132.486 y ECVI = 0.423. CONCLUSION This new questionnaire (G_Clinic) improves clinimetric values of the Font Roja questionnaire, because it reduces the number of items, improves the reliability of the dimensions, increases the value of variance explained, and allows knowing job satisfaction of nurses in clinical managementt.

Purpose: Although young males encounter sexually-related concerns, they are mostly absent from specialized services. Our objective is to assess whether the internet is used by boys to find answers to these types of problems and questions. Methods: In the context of a qualitative study assessing young males' barriers to access sexual and reproductive health facilities, we conducted two focus groups gathering 12 boys aged 17-20. Discussions were triggered through the presentation of four vignettes corresponding to questions posted by 17-20 year old boys and girls on an information website for adolescents (www.ciao.ch), concerning various sexual dysfunction situations. In order to avoid having to talk about their own experience, participants were asked what they would do in those cases. Results: In general, the internet was mentioned quite thoroughly as a means of searching for information through research engines and a place to address professionals for advice.Within the hierarchy of consultation possibilities, the internet was given the first place as a way to deal with these types of problems presenting many advantages: (1) the internet enables to maintain intimacy; (2) it is anonymous (use of a pseudo); (3) it avoids having to confront someone face-to-face with personal problems which can be embarrassing and challenging for one's pride; (4) it is free; and (5) it is accessible at all times. In other words, participants value the internet as a positive tool to avoid many barriers which prevent offline consultations to take place. Most participants consider the internet at least as a first step in trying to solve a problem; for instance, by better defining the seriousness of a problem and judging if it is worth consulting a doctor. However, despite the positive qualities of the internet, they do put forward the importance of having specialists answering questions, trustworthiness, and being followed-up by the same person. Participants suggested that a strategy to break down barriers for boys to consult in face-to-face settings is to have a consultation on the internet as a first step which could then guide the person to an in-person consultation if necessary. Conclusions: The internet as a means of obtaining information or consulting received high marks overall. Although the internet cannot replace an in-person consultation, the screen and the keyboard have the advantage of not involving a face-to-face encounter and raise the possibility of discussing sexual problems anonymously and in private. The internet tools together with other new technologies should continue to develop in a secure manner as a space providing prevention messages and to become an easy access door to sexual and reproductive health services for young men, which can then guide youths to appropriate resource persons. Through the history of Electrical Engineering education, vectorial and phasorial diagrams have been used as a fundamental learning tool. At present, computational power has replaced them by long data lists, the result of solving equation systems by means of numerical methods. In this sense, diagrams have been shifted to an academic background and although theoretically explained, they are not used in a practical way within specific examples. This fact may be against the understanding of the complex behavior of the electrical power systems by students. This article proposes a modification of the classical Perrine-Baum diagram construction to allowing both a more practical representation and a better understanding of the behavior of a high-voltage electric line under different levels of load. This modification allows, at the same time, the forecast of the obsolescence of this behavior and line’s loading capacity. Complementary, we evaluate the impact of this tool in the learning process showing comparative undergraduate results during three academic years

Work motivation is viewed, since middle of the 20th Century, as a main factor of job satisfaction, also for increasing of productivity and quality of goods and services. By the ending of a Master’s Programme in Global Management, we was moved by a great interest to research and report about the organization human values, important component of which is the people’s satisfaction level in work conditions, obtained through an evaluation of a great number of independent variables, related to two items – work content and work context. The main objective of the present dissertation is to identify in which measure the job environmental variables contribute to work satisfaction. Inspired into the Two Factors Theory (Herzberg, 1959, 1982) and into The Cognitive Evaluation Theory (Deci, 1971), we intent to relate people satisfaction to different particular variables, which perform two subsystems – intrinsic or motivator, that includes learning, emotions, work itself, achievement and recognition and; extrinsic or hygienic, that includes salary, supervision and work physical conditions. Besides a specialized literature review, we took up two separated inquiries within capeverdian companies, the first conducted in October, 2003, and the second in October, 2007, which allowed specifics and general job satisfaction indexes, correlations and comparative analysis. We concluded that people are fair satisfied on job, and give more emphasis on work content factors, than on work context factors, but the source of satisfaction is different category by category.

The parasitism behavior of Trichogramma atopovirilia and T. pretiosum in Spodoptera frugiperda eggs was evaluated focusing on the features related to the associative learning (alpha conditioning) and recognition of the egg parasitized by the female after the first oviposition experience. Females of both species were observed to recognize the parasitized egg, which takes place after the female drills into the host egg. Following oviposition, 43.59% and 67.53 of females began to feed with an average feeding time of 73.26 ± 11.57 and 64.04 ± 7.05 seconds for T. atopovirilia and T. pretiosum, respectively. The time elapsed in each step of the parasitism behavior significantly decreased after the first oviposition experience, with a trend to stabilize after the 2nd or 3rd egg parasitized, indicating associative learning in these Trichogramma species.
