In this study, a series of N-chloro-acetylated dipeptides were synthesised by the application of Houghten's methodology of multiple analog peptide syntheses. The peptides, all of which contain a C-terminal free acid, were tested as inactivators of bovine cathepsin B, in an attempt at exploiting the known and, amongst the cysteine proteinases, unique carboxy dipeptidyl peptidase activity of the protease. We have succeeded in obtaining a number of effective inactivators, the most potent of which-chloroacetyl-Leu-Leu-OH, inactivates the enzyme with an apparent second-order rate constant of 3.8 x 10(4) M-1 min(-1). In contrast, the esterified analog, chloroacetyl-Leu-Leu-OMe, inactivates the enzyme some three orders of magnitude less efficiently, lending credence to our thesis that a free carboxylic acid moiety is an important determinant for inhibitor effectiveness. This preliminary study has highlighted a number of interesting features about the specificity requirements of the bovine proteinase and we believe that our approach has great potential for the rapid delineation of the subsite specificities of cathepsin B-like proteases from various species. The objective of this thesis was to determine whether the establishment and operation of an archives services by the Hudson's Bay Company had an effect on the company's ability to carry out document repairs. Data collection methods included reviews of published material, archival records of the Hudson's Bay Company, and semi-structured interviews. The study found that the Hudson's Bay Company's commitment to operating a modern archives service in accordance with accepted archive administration practices had a substantial effect on its ability to carry out document repairs. The principled approach to repair, as practiced by the Public Record Office, was a major influence. A review of secondary sources placed this development squarely within the context of archival developments in 20th century England. Overall, the thesis findings add to the growing conversation about conservation history in England, in particular, archive conservation history as it occurred outside of the Public Record Office in the 20th century, by discussing how some methods of repair that were devised, adopted and extended by the Public Record Office in the 19th and 20th centuries were adopted and applied in the 20th century by a well-established business corporation.

CO hydrogenation is used as a model system to understand why multiphase catalysts are chemically important in heterogeneous catalysis. By including both adsorption and subsequent surface reactions, kinetic equations are derived with two fundamental properties, the chemisorption energies of C and O (Delta H-C and Delta H-O, respectively). By plotting the activity against Delta H-C and Delta H-O, a 3-D volcano surface is obtained. Because of the constraint between Delta H-C and Delta H-O on monophase systems, a maximum can be achieved. However, if multiphase systems are used, such a constraint can be released and the global maximum may be achieved.
