The dynamics of high energetic electrons (>= 11.7 eV) in a modified industrial confined dual-frequency capacitively coupled RF discharge (Exelan, Lam Research Inc.), operated at 1.937 MHz and 27.118 MHz, is investigated by means of phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy. Operating in a He-O-2. plasma with small rare gas admixtures the emission is measured, with one-dimensional spatial resolution along the discharge axis. Both the low and high frequency RF cycle are resolved. The diagnostic is based on time dependent measurements of the population densities of specifically chosen excited rare gas states. A time dependent model, based on rate equations, describes the dynamics of the population densities of these levels. Based on this model and the comparison of the excitation of various rare gas states, with different excitation thresholds, time and space resolved electron temperature, propagation velocity and qualitative electron density as well as electron energy distribution functions are determined. This information leads to a better understanding of the dual-frequency sheath dynamics and shows, that separate control of ion energy and electron density is limited.

Frequency coupling in multifrequency discharges is a complex nonlinear interaction of the different frequency components. An alpha-mode low pressure rf capacitively coupled plasma operated simultaneously with two frequencies is investigated and the coupling of the two frequencies is observed to greatly influence the excitation and ionization within the discharge. Through this, plasma production and sustainment are dictated by the corresponding electron dynamics and can be manipulated through the dual-frequency sheath. These mechanisms are influenced by the relative voltage and also the relative phase of the two frequencies.

We show that by introducing a gap at the center of the helical sections (where the current is minimum) of a lambda/2 quadrifilar helix antenna (QHA) and varying the axial length and radial gap between the overlapping volutes, the antenna gives a 28% impedance bandwidth which is nine times the bandwidth of a conventional QHA. A 16% bandwidth with a front to back ratio of >= 14 dB is achievable with 5-14% reduction in the size of the QHA. The structure can yield a monopole radiation pattern suitable for terrestrial applications or a hemispherical pattern suitable for satellite use. The simulation results are validated by measurements at L-band.

A side-fed bifilar helix antenna can be integrated with a quadrifilar helix antenna in a piggy back configuration in order to achieve a dual-mode radiating structure. The overall length of the structure is 0.44 lambda at the resonant frequency (1.54 GHz) of the space mode antenna and 0.39 lambda at the resonant frequency (1.34 GHz) of the terrestrial mode antenna. The computed results are validated by experimental data.

The reflection phase response of a two-layer array of orthogonally oriented concentric split rings is presented. Splitting the ring elements suppresses the interlayer coupling and produces polarisation sensitive scattering. Simulated and measured results at X-band demonstrate that these proper-ties enable the reflection phase coefficients of a reflect-array to be independently optimised at two different frequencies.

In this article we propose a technique for dual-band Class-E power amplifier design using composite right/left-handed transmission lines, CRLH TLs. Design equations are presented and design procedures are elaborated. Because of the nonlinear phase dispersion characteristic of CRLH TLs, the single previous attempt at applying this method to dual bond Class-E amplifier design was not sufficient to simultaneously satisfy, the minimum requirement of Class-E impedances at both the fundamental and the second harmonic frequencies. This article rectifies this situation. A design example illustrating the synthesis procedure for a 0.5W-5V dual band Class-E amplifier circuit simultaneously operated at 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz is given and compared with ADS simulation.

High-cadence, synchronized, multiwavelength optical observations of a solar active region (NOAA 10794) are presented. The data were obtained with the Dunn Solar Telescope at the National Solar Observatory/Sacramento Peak using a newly developed camera system: the rapid dual imager. Wavelet analysis is undertaken to search for intensity related oscillatory signatures, and periodicities ranging from 20 to 370 s are found with significance levels exceeding 95%. Observations in the H-α blue wing show more penumbral oscillatory phenomena when compared to simultaneous G-band observations. The H-α oscillations are interpreted as the signatures of plasma motions with a mean velocity of 20 km s-1. The strong oscillatory power over H-α blue-wing and G-band penumbral bright grains is an indication of the Evershed flow with frequencies higher than previously reported.

A series of Hunig's base tethered ammonium ionic liquids have been used to catalyse the Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes/ketones with malononitrile and ethyl cyanoacetate. The reactions were performed under homogeneous and under biphasic, liquid-liquid and liquid-silica supported ionic liquid, conditions with the biphasic systems employing cyclohexene as the second phase. By increasing the distance between the ammonium head group and Hunig's base the activity of the catalyst was found to increase. Higher activity, in general, was found under homogeneous reaction conditions; however, the recyclability of the catalyst was improved by supporting the BIL under biphasic conditions. Lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is a key enzyme involved in lipoprotein metabolism. It mediates the transesterification of free cholesterol to cholesteryl ester in an apoprotein A-I-dependent process. We have isolated purified LCAT from human plasma using anion-exchange chromatography and characterized the extracted LCAT in terms of its molecular weight, molar absorption coefficient, and enzymatic activity. The participation of LCAT in the oxidation of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) was examined by supplementing lipoproteins with exogenous LCAT over a range of protein concentrations. LCAT-depleted lipoproteins were also prepared and their oxidation kinetics examined. Our results provide evidence for a dual role for LCAT in lipoprotein oxidation, whereby it acts in a dose-responsive manner as a potent pro-oxidant during VLDL oxidation, but as an antioxidant during LDL oxidation. We believe this novel pro-oxidant effect may be attributable to the LCAT-mediated formation of oxidized cholesteryl ester in VLDL, whereas the antioxidant effect is similar to that of chain-breaking antioxidants. Thus, we have demonstrated that the high-density lipoprotein-associated enzyme LCAT may have a significant role to play in lipoprotein modification and hence atherogenesis. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc.
