Port activity in Latin America and the Caribbean increased by nearly 60% between 2000 and 2007 in terms of metric tons of cargo moved and nearly 130% in terms of containers, growing to 1.6 billion metric tons and roughly 32 million TEUs. Based on data provided in the ECLAC Maritime Profile. This issue of the FAL Bulletin presents the main analytical data on port trends in the region.

This issue of the FAL Bulletin examines the scale of maritime reefer trade in South America and the developments made in this area since the 1990s. It also looks at the increase in the capacity of liner services and the relationship between conventional and containerized reefer vessels in terms of trade volume, commodities exported and the destinations for exports from South America.

Gran parte del crecimiento económico mundial se expresa y está relacionado con la actividad del comercio internacional, el cual se ejerce en un 90% a través de los mares.América Latina y el Caribe se han inscrito también en tales tendencias. El presente artículo del Boletín continúa con los anteriores de este año sobre la actividad marítima de la región.
