Liberating the Issue of Present Days. About the Foucaltian Critics of Inflationary Speeches on the Present as “Mass Society” and “Estatalized Space”

With this article we pretend to contribute, in a really modest way, to the liberation of a tenacious image of our society: which operates as an ideological basis of a group of current socio-political pseudocritics, with great success and diffusion. For this we will undertake the exposition and the analysis of the development group of Naissance de la biopolitique in which Foucault accomplishes the critic of all that number of inflationary speeches that represent our society like a “mass society” and a “estatalized space”. Facing these vague and disproportionate forms of consideration, the foucaltian critic, in its exquisite attention to what happens nowadays, it should reveal how our societies function as systems that optimize the difference –radically nominalists-, in which it is produced, beyond any phantasmatic of the oppressor and invasive estate, a regretion of the legal-estate structures that articulate the socio-politic groups, in benefit of the reconstitution and the social tissue as a communitarian network, suitable for the dynamics of market competence that characterise our enterprise societies. That will open to a new idea of the critic, and to a displacement of its object and objectives.

Influence of loggerhead egg agregation on survival: why does single eggs buried into natural sand dye in few days?

[EN] The incubation is an essential life period for oviparous species that very often experiences a high mortality. In some reptile species the number of eggs that develop together in the incubation chamber affects survival and hatchling phenotype. Sea turtle eggs develop in underground locations on sandy beaches in large masses that usually have more than 80 eggs. Natural egg mortality seems to vary among species and for the sensitive leatherbacks, external eggs seems to survive better than internal ones within the nest.

Helsingin poliisisoittokunnan konserttitoiminnan tehokkuus Helsingin poliisilaitoksen suhdetoimintatyön tekijänä. Tapaustutkimus Back in the swinging old days -konserttitapahtumasta Helsingin Savoy-teatterissa 10.–11.02.2015.

Helsingin poliisisoittokunta on konserttitoiminnallaan suorittanut suhdetoimintatyötä Helsingin poliisilaitoksen hyväksi jo lähes 70 vuotta. Tämän tutkimuksen päämääränä oli tarkastella Helsingin poliisisoittokunnan konserttitoiminnan suhdetoiminnallista tehokkuutta yhden konserttitapahtuman osalta. Tutkimus suoritettiin tapaustutkimuksena jonka suorittamisessa käytettiin Survey-menetelmää. Tapaustutkimuksen kohteeksi valikoitui Helsingin poliisisoittokunnan Savoy-teatterissa 10.–11.02.2014 esittämä konserttitapahtuma. Tutkimuksen empiirinen osuus koostui ennen konserttia tehdyistä haastatteluista sekä konserttitapahtuman jälkeen suoritetusta yleisökyselystä. Helsingin poliisilaitoksen henkilöstöjohtajalle sekä Helsingin poliisisoittokunnan kapellimestarille ja intendentille suoritettujen haastattelujen avulla pyrittiin selvittämään Helsingin poliisisoittokunnan konserttitoiminnalle asetettuja suhdetoiminnallisia tavoitteita ja strategioita. Haastatteluista saatu tieto auttoi tutkimuskysymysten sekä yleisökyselyssä käytettäväksi tulevien mittareiden rakentamista. Yleisökyselylomake toimi tärkeimpänä aineistona tutkimuksessa. Yleisökyselyn vastaajien hankkimisessa käytettiin harkinnanvaraista otosta eli näytettä. Saatuja vastauksia analysoitiin koko vastaajajoukon sekä Helsingin poliisilaitoksen suhdetoiminnassa määriteltyjen sidosryhmien osalta. Analysoinnissa käytettiin sekä kvantitatiivisin että kvalitatiivisia menetelmiä. Tästä saadun tiedon pohjalta voitiin tehdä päätelmiä kyseisen konserttitapahtuman suhdetoiminnallisesta tehokkuudesta. Yleisökyselyn tulosten pohjalta tehdyissä päätelmissä tukeuduttiin Walter Lindemannin esittämään metodiin, jossa suoritetun suhdetoimintaprojektin kokonaistehokkuutta suositellaan tarkasteltavaksi sen panostusten, vaikutusten ja lopputulosten tehokkuudesta saatujen tulosten kautta. Panostuksissa keskityttiin konserttitapahtuman markkinointitoimien tehokkuuteen. Vaikutuksissa tarkastelun kohteena oli yleisökyselyyn vastanneiden tyytyväisyys konserttitapahtuman eri osatekijöitä kohtaan. Lopputulosten kohdalla tarkasteltavaksi tuli Helsingin poliisisoittokunnan maine sekä Helsingin poliisisoittokunnan ja konserttiyleisön välisen suhteen tila. Yleisökyselystä saatujen tuloksien lisäksi tukeuduttiin näiden kolmen osa-alueen osalta tehdyissä päätelmissä niiden osalta julkaistuun kirjallisuuteen sekä aiempaan tutkimusmateriaaliin. Tutkimuksen perusteella voitiin kyseisen Helsingin poliisisoittokunnan konserttitapahtuman suhdetoiminnallisen tehokkuuden todeta olleen erittäin hyvä. Nämä tehokkuudesta saadut tulokset toistuivat samankaltaisina sekä koko tutkittavan joukon että tarkastelussa olleiden sidosryhmien kohdalla. Havaitut kehittämiskohteet kohdistuivat lähinnä panostusten kohdalla suoritettuihin markkinointitoimiin. Yleisökyselyn vastaajien hankinnassa käytetty harkinnanvarainen otos rajoitti tutkimustulosten yleistämistä. Yleisökyselyyn saatu korkea vastausprosentti sekä otokseen sisältynyt laaja sidosryhmien edustus mahdollisti kuitenkin tutkimustulosten hypoteesitason yleistämistä.

Ventricular Fibrillation in Patient with Multi-vessel Coronary Spasm Four Days after the Initiation of Oral Beta-blocker

We describe a case of ventricular fibrillation occurring in a patient with multi-vessel coronary spasm after the initiation of an oral beta-blocker. A 56-year-old man began to experience chest discomfort and his computed tomography revealed intermediate coronary stenoses. He was administered medications including an oral beta-blocker but suddenly collapsed while walking 4 days later. An automated external defibrillator detected ventricular fibrillation and delivered successful electrical cardioversion. An acetylcholine provocation test after stabilization of the status revealed triple-vessel coronary spasm. Beta-blockers may provoke exacerbation of coronary spasm and result in lethal arrhythmia.

“In The Good Old Days of Long Ago": Echoes of Vaudeville and Minstrelsy in the Music of Uncle Dave Macon

Uncle Dave Macon provided an essential link between nineteenth-century, urban popular stage music (especially the minstrel show and vaudeville) and commercialized country music of the 1920s. He preserved through his recordings a large body of songs and banjo techniques that had their origins in urban-based, nineteenth-century vaudeville and minstrelsy. Like the minstrel and vaudeville performers of the nineteenth century, Macon told jokes and stories, employed attention-grabbing stage gimmicks, marketed himself with boastful or outrageous slogans, and dressed with individual flair. At the same time, Macon incorporated many features from the rural-based folk music of Middle Tennessee. Overall, Macon’s repertoire, musical style, and stage persona (which included elements of the rube, country gentleman, and old man) demonstrated his deep absorption, and subsequent reinterpretation, of nineteenth-century musical traditions. Macon’s career offers a case study in how nineteenth-century performance styles, repertoire, and stage practices became a part of country music in the 1920s. As an artist steeped in two separate, but overlapping, types of nineteenth-century music—stage and folk—Macon was well-positioned to influence the development of the new commercial genre. He brought together several strains of nineteenth-century music to form a modern, twentieth-century musical product ideally suited to the new mass media of records, radio, and film. By tracing Macon’s career and studying his music, we can observe how the cross-currents of rural and popular entertainment during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries interacted to form the commercial genre we now know as country music.

Characterization of heat waves affecting mortality rates of broilers between 29 days and market age

Climate may affect broiler production, especially where there are heat waves, which may cause high mortality rates due to the heat stress. Heat wave prediction and characterization may allow early mitigation actions to be taken. Data Mining is one of the tools used for such a characterization, particularly when a large number of variables is involved. The objective of this study was to classify heat waves that promote broiler chicken mortality in poultry houses equipped with minimal environmental control. A single day of heat, a heat-shock day, is capable of producing high broiler mortality. In poultry houses equipped with fans and evaporative cooling, the characterization of heat waves affecting broiler mortality between 29 days of age and market age presented 89.34% Model Accuracy and 0.73 Class Precision for high mortality. There was no influence on high mortality (HM) of birds between 29 and 31 days of age. Maximum temperature humidity index (THI) above 30.6 ºC was the main characteristic of days when there was a heat wave, causing high mortality in broilers older than 31 days. The high mortality of broilers between 31 and 40 days of age occurred when maximum THI was above 30.6 ºC and maximum temperature of the day was above 34.4 ºC. There were two main causes of high mortality of broilers older than 40 days: 1) maximum THI above 30.6 ºC and minimum THI equal or lower than 15.5 ºC; 2) maximum THI above 30.6 ºC, minimum THI lower than 15.5 ºC, and the time of maximum temperature later than 15:00h. The heat wave influence on broiler mortality lasted an average of 2.7 days.

Healing effect of Terminalia chebula Retz extract on second-degree burns in rats

Purpose: To investigate the healing effect of Terminalia chebula Retz Extract (TCRE) on seconddegree burns in rats. Methods: Male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, weighing 200 – 220 g, were subjected to deep seconddegree skin burns by electrical scald instrument. The animals were divided into three groups as follows: (1) second-degree burns model (control) group, (2) burns model treated with 1 % silver sulfadiazine (SSD) group, and (3) burns model treated with 100 mg·mL-1 TCRE group. On days 3, 7 and 14 following the administration of the drug/extract, the wound area and histopathological changes in rat epidermis were evaluated for the various groups. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of TCRE on Staphyloccocus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli were also assessed separately. Results: On day 14, the mean wound area of TCRE treatment group (0.25 ± 0.06 cm2) was significantly smaller than that of the control rats (2.71 ± 0.20 cm2, p < 0.01). The histological results indicate that the inflammatory cells disappeared and were replaced by new granulation tissue in the group treated with 100 mg·mL-1 TCRE by day 14. Compared with SSD group rats, the inflammatory cells and fibroblast and granulation tissues of burnt rats treated with 100 mg·mL-1 TCRE were same as those of rats that had no burns. The antibacterial results revealed that the MIC of TCRE on Staphyloccocus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli was 3.13, 12.5 and 6.25 mg·mL-1, respectively. Conclusion: Terminalia chebula Retz. has potentials to be developed as an effective medicinal herb for the treatment of second-degree burns.

Perinatal complications associated with preterm deliveries at 24 to 33 weeks and 6 days gestation (2011- 2012): A hospital-based retrospective study

Background: Morbidity and mortality of preterm babies are important issues in perinatal medicine. In developed countries, preterm delivery is the cause of about 70% of mortality and 75% of morbidity in the neonatal period, respectively. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors for preterm labor and the outcomes, in terms of perinatal mortality and morbidity at the time of discharge home, among preterm infants at less than 34 weeks gestation. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted and all infants with a gestational age of 24 to 33 weeks and 6 days who were born from November 1st , 2011 to March 31, 2012 were enrolled in this study. Results: From 1185 preterm infants were born during this period, 475 (40.08%) infants with less than 34 weeks gestational age were included in the study. Our study showed the major obstetrical risk factors for preterm labor were as follows: preeclampsia (21%), premature rupture of membranes (20.3%), abruption of placenta (10%), and idiopathic cases (48.7%). The neonatal mortality rate in less than 34 weeks was 9.05%. Significant perinatal morbidity causesd in less than 34 weeks were as follows: sepsis (46.94%), respiratory distress syndrome (41.47%), patent ductus arteriosus (21.47%), retinopathy of prematurity (3.57%), necrotizing entrocolitis (1.68%), intra-ventricular hemorrhage (9%), and broncho-pulmonary dysplasia (0.84%). Conclusion: Preterm birth is associated with adverse perinatal outcome. This situation needs to be improved by directing appropriately increased resources for improving prenatal health services and providing advanced neonatal care.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Engrafted In A Fibrin Scaffold Stimulate Schwann Cell Reactivity And Axonal Regeneration Following Sciatic Nerve Tubulization.

The present study investigated the effectiveness of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) associated with a fibrin scaffold (FS) for the peripheral regenerative process after nerve tubulization. Adult female Lewis rats received a unilateral sciatic nerve transection followed by repair with a polycaprolactone (PCL)-based tubular prosthesis. Sixty days after injury, the regenerated nerves were studied by immunohistochemistry. Anti-p75NTR immunostaining was used to investigate the reactivity of the MSCs. Basal labeling, which was upregulated during the regenerative process, was detected in uninjured nerves and was significantly greater in the MSC-treated group. The presence of GFP-positive MSCs was detected in the nerves, indicating the long term survival of such cells. Moreover, there was co-localization between MSCs and BNDF immunoreactivity, showing a possible mechanism by which MSCs improve the reactivity of SCs. Myelinated axon counting and morphometric analyses showed that MSC engrafting led to a higher degree of fiber compaction combined with a trend of increased myelin sheath thickness, when compared with other groups. The functional result of MSC engrafting was that the animals showed higher motor function recovery at the seventh and eighth week after lesion. The findings herein show that MSC+FS therapy improves the nerve regeneration process by positively modulating the reactivity of SCs.
