A low-complexity lattice-based low-PAR transmission scheme for DSL channels

This paper presents a new low-complexity multicarrier modulation (MCM) technique based on lattices which achieves a peak-to-average power ratio (PAR) as low as three. The scheme can be viewed as a drop in replacement for the discrete multitone (DMT) modulation of an asymmetric digital subscriber line modem. We show that the lattice-MCM retains many of the attractive features of sinusoidal-MCM, and does so with lower implementation complexity, O(N), compared with DMT, which requires O(N log N) operations. We also present techniques for narrowband interference rejection and power profiling. Simulation studies confirm that performance of the lattice-MCM is superior, even compared with recent techniques for PAR reduction in DMT.

Assessing the performance of a nucleus estate and smallholder scheme for oil palm production in West Sumatra: a stochastic frontier analysis

In this paper, we study the performance of smallholders in a nucleus estate and smallholder (NES) scheme in oil palm production schemein West Sumatra by measuring their technical efficiency using a stochastic frontier production function. Our results indicate a mean technical efficiency of 66%, which is below what we would have expected given the uniformity of the climate, soils and plantation construction among the sample farmers. The use of progressive farmers as a means of disseminating extension advice does not appear to have been successful, and more rigorous farmer selection procedures need to be put in place for similar schemes and for general agricultural extension in future. No clear relationship was established between technical efficiency and the use of female labour, suggesting there is no need to target extension services specifically at female labourers in the household. Finally, education was found to have an unexpectedly negative impact on technical efficiency, indicating that farmers with primary education may be more important than those with secondary and tertiary education as targets of development schemes and extension programs entailing non-formal education. A proposed scheme for comprehensive characterization of the measured geometric distortion in magnetic resonance imaging using a three-dimensional phantom

Recently, a 3-dimensional phantom that can provide a comprehensive, accurate and complete measurement of the geometric distortion in MRI has been developed. In this paper, a scheme for characterizing the measured geometric distortion using the 3-D phantom is described. In the proposed scheme, a number of quantitative measures are developed and used to characterize the geometric distortion. These measures encompass the overall and spatial aspects of the geometric distortion. Two specific types of volume of interest, rectangular parallelepipeds (including cubes) and spheres are considered in the proposed scheme. As an illustration, characterization of the geometric distortion in a Siemens 1.5T Sonata MRI system using the proposed scheme is presented. As shown, the proposed scheme provides a comprehensive assessment of the geometric distortion. The scheme can be potentially used as a standard procedure for the assessment of geometric distortion in MRI. (C) 2004 American Association of Physicists in Medicine.
