The crystal polymorphism of the anthelmintic drug, triclabendazole (TCB), is described. Two anhydrates (Forms I and II), three solvates, and an amorphous form have been previously mentioned. This study reports the crystal structures of Forms I (1) and II (2). These structures illustrate the uncommon phenomenon of tautomeric polymorphism. TCB exists as two tautomers A and B. Form I (Z'=2) is composed of two molecules of tautomer A while Form II (Z'=1) contains a 1:1 mixture of A and B. The polymorphs are also characterized by using other solid-state techniques (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), PXRD, FT-IR, and NMR spectroscopy). Form I is the higher melting form (m.p.: 177 degrees C, Delta Hf=approximate to 105 +/- 4 Jg-1) and is the more stable form at room temperature. Form II is the lower melting polymorph (m.p.: 166 degrees C, Delta Hf=approximate to 86 +/- 3 Jg-1) and shows high kinetic stability on storage in comparison to the amorphous form but it transforms readily into Form I in a solution-mediated process. Crystal structure analysis of co-crystals 3-11 further confirms the existence of tautomeric polymorphism in TCB. In 3 and 11, tautomer A is present whereas in 4-10 the TCB molecule exists wholly as tautomer B. The DFT calculations suggest that the optimized tautomers A and B have nearly the same energies. Single point energy calculations reveal that tautomer A (in Form I) exists in two low-energy conformations, whereas in Form II both tautomers A and B exist in an unfavorable high-energy conformation, stabilized by a five-point dimer synthon. The structural and thermodynamic features of 1-11 are discussed in detail. Triclabendazole is an intriguing case in which tautomeric and conformational variations co-exist in the polymorphs.

A detailed study on the removal of pollutants (NOx, aldehydes and CO) from the exhaust of a stationary diesel engine is carried out using barrier discharge hybrid plasma techniques. The objective of the study is to make a comparative analysis. For this purpose, the exhaust treatment was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, the exhaust was treated with plasma process and plasma-adsorbent hybrid process. The effectiveness of the two processes with regard to NOx removal and by-product reduction was discussed. In the second stage, the exhaust was treated by plasma and plasma-catalyst hybrid process. The effectiveness of the two processes with regard to pollutants (NOx, CO) removal and by-product reduction was analyzed. Finally, a comprehensive comparison of different techniques has been made and feasible plasma based hybrid techniques for stationary and non-stationary engine exhaust treatments were proposed.

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) based on acrylic acid (AA), sodium acrylate (SA), and acrylamide (AM) were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinking agent. The equilibrium swelling capacities and the rates of swelling of SAPs varied with the AM content and followed first-order kinetics. The photodegradation of SAPs in their equilibrium swollen state was carried out by monitoring their swelling capacity and the residual weight fraction. The SAPs degraded in two stages, wherein the swelling capacity increased to a maximum and then subsequently decreased. Thermogravimetric analysis of the SAPs indicated that the copolymeric superabsorbents had intermediate thermal stability between the homopolymeric superabsorbents. The activation energies of SAPs with 0, 20, and 100 mol % AM content were determined by Kissinger method and were found to be 299, 248, and 147 kJ mol-1, respectively. The ultrasonic degradation of the superabsorbents was carried out in their equilibrium swollen state, and the change in the viscosity with ultrasonication time was used to quantify the degradation. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA superabsorbent was also investigated at various ultrasound intensities. The degradation rate coefficients were found to increase with the intensity of ultrasound. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA/AM (20% AM) was also carried out, and degradation rate was found to be more than that of the AA/SA superabsorbent. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four new 2-oxo-1,2-dihydrobenzoh]quinoline-3-carbaldehyde N-substituted thiosemicarbazone ligands (H-2-LR, where R = H, Me, Et or Ph) and their corresponding new cobalt(III) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The structures of the complexes 2 and 3 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The interactions of the new complexes with DNA were investigated by absorption, emission and viscosity studies which indicated that the complexes bind to DNA via intercalation. Antioxidant studies of the new complexes showed that the significant antioxidant activity against DPPH radical. In addition, the in vitro cytotoxicity of complexes 1-4 against A549 cell line was assayed which showed higher cytotoxic activity with lower IC50 values indicating their efficiency in killing the cancer cells even at very low concentrations. We report the results of magnetization and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies on nanoparticles (average diameter similar to 30 nm) of Bi0.25Ca0.75MnO3 (BCMO) and compare them with the results on bulk BCMO. The nanoparticles were prepared using the nonaqueous sol-gel technique and characterized by XRD and TEM analysis. Magnetization measurements were carried out with a commercial physical property measurement system (PPMS). While the bulk BCMO exhibits a charge ordering transition at similar to 230 K and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at similar to 130 K, in the nanoparticles, the CO phase is seen to have disappeared and a transition to a ferromagnetic (FM) state is observed at T-c similar to 120 K. However, interestingly, the exchange bias effect observed in other nanomanganite ferromagnets is absent in BCMO nanoparticles. EPR measurements were carried out in the X-band between 8 and 300 K. Lineshape fitting to a Lorentzian with two terms (accounting for both the clockwise and anticlockwise rotations of the microwave field) was employed to obtain the relevant EPR parameters as functions of temperature. The results confirm the occurrence of ferromagnetism in the nanoparticles of BCMO. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4730612]

Carbon footprint (CF) refers to the total amount of carbon dioxide and its equivalents emitted due to various anthropogenic activities. Carbon emission and sequestration inventories have been reviewed sector-wise for all federal states in India to identify the sectors and regions responsible for carbon imbalances. This would help in implementing appropriate climate change mitigation and management strategies at disaggregated levels. Major sectors of carbon emissions in India are through electricity generation, transport, domestic energy consumption, industries and agriculture. A majority of carbon storage occurs in forest biomass and soil. This paper focuses on the statewise carbon emissions (CO2. CO and CH4), using region specific emission factors and statewise carbon sequestration capacity. The estimate shows that CO2, CO and CH4 emissions from India are 965.9, 22.5 and 16.9 Tg per year, respectively. Electricity generation contributes 35.5% of total CO2 emission, which is followed by the contribution from transport. Vehicular transport exclusively contributes 25.5% of total emission. The analysis shows that Maharashtra emits higher CO2, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The carbon status, which is the ratio of annual carbon storage against carbon emission, for each federal state is computed. This shows that small states and union territories (UT) like Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where carbon sequestration is higher due to good vegetation cover, have carbon status > 1. Annually, 7.35% of total carbon emissions get stored either in forest biomass or soil, out of which 34% is in Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Orissa. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Lattice oxygen of TiO2 is activated by the substitution of Pd ion in its lattice. Ti1-xPdxO2-x (x = 0.01-0.03) have been synthesized by solution combustion method crystallizing in anatase TiO2 structure. Pd is in +2 oxidation state and Ti is in +4 oxidation state in the catalyst. Pd is more ionic in TiO2 lattice compared to Pd in PdO. Oxygen storage capacity defined by ``amount of oxygen that is used reversibly to oxidize CO'' is as high as 5100 mu mol/g of Ti0.97Pd0.03O1.97. Oxygen is extracted by CO to CO2 in absence of feed oxygen even at room temperature which is more than 20 times compared to pure TiO2. Rate of CO oxidation is 2.75 mu mol g(-1) s(-1) at 60 degrees C over Ti0.97Pd0.03O1.97 and C2H2 gets oxidized to CO2 and H2O at room temperature. Catalyst is not poisoned on long time operation of the reactor. Such high catalytic activity is due to activated lattice oxygen created by the substitution of Pd ion as seen from first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations with 96 atom supercells of Ti32O64, Ti31Pd1O63, Ti30Pd2O62, and Ti29Pd3O61. The compounds crystallize in anatase TiO2 structure with Pd2+ ion in nearly square planar geometry and TiO6 octahedra are distorted by the creation of weakly bound oxygens. Structural analysis of Ti31Pd1O63 which is close to 3% Pd ion substituted TiO2 shows that oxygens associated with both Ti and Pd ions in the lattice show bond valence sum of 1.87, a low value characteristic of weak oxygen in the lattice compared to oxygens with valence 2 and above in the same lattice. Exact positions of activated oxygens have been identified in the lattice from DFT calculations.

Undoped and co-doped (Ag, Co) ZnO powders were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method without using any capping agent. The X-ray diffraction results indicate that the undoped and co-doped ZnO powders have pure hexagonal structure and are consisting of nanosized single-crystalline particles. The size of the nanoparticles increases with increasing Ag concentration from 1 to 5 mol% as compared to that of undoped ZnO. The presence of substitution dopants of Ag and Co in the ZnO host material was confirmed by the Energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX). Optical absorption measurements indicate blue shift and red-shift in the absorption band edge upon doping concentration of Ag and blue emission was observed by photoluminescence (PL) studies.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization at 70 A degrees C in N,N-dimethylformamide was used to prepare poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) copolymers in various compositions to afford well-defined polymers with pre-determined molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and precise chain end structure. The copolymer compositions were determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The reactivity ratios of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) were calculated as r (NIPAM) = 0.838 and r (DMA) = 1.105, respectively, by the extended Kelen-Tudos method at high conversions. The lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM can be altered by changing the DMA content in the copolymer chain. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis at different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of thermal degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were applied to estimate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These studies are important to understand the solid state polymer degradation of N-alkyl substituted polymers, which show great potential in the preparation of miscible polymer blends due to their ability to interact through hydrogen bonding.

We demonstrate the activity of Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta and Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta catalysts towards the CO oxidation and water gas shift (VMS) reaction. Both the catalysts were synthesized in the nano crystalline form by a low temperature sonochemical method and characterized by different techniques such as XRD, FT-Raman, TEM, FT-IR, XPS and BET surface analyzer. H-2-TPR results corroborate the intimate contact between noble metal and Fe ions in the both catalysts that facilitates the reducibility of the support. In the absence of feed CO2 and H-2, nearly 100% conversion of CO to CO2 with 100% H-2 selectivity was observed at 300 degrees C and 260 degrees C respectively, for Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta and Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta catalyst. However, the catalytic performance of Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta deteriorates in the presence of feed CO2 and H-2. The change in the support reducibility is the primary reason for the significant increase in the activity for CO oxidation and WGS reaction. The effect of Fe addition was more significant in Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta than Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta. Based on the spectroscopic evidences and surface phenomena, a hybrid reaction scheme utilizing both surface hydroxyl groups and the lattice oxygen was hypothesized over these catalysts for WGS reaction. The mechanisms based on the formate and redox pathway were used to fit the ldnetic data. The analysis of experimental data shows the redox mechanism is the dominant pathway over these catalysts. Electrodeposition of Co-W alloy coatings has been carried out with DC and PC using gluconate bath at different pH. These coatings are characterized for their structure, morphology and chemical composition by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Alloy coatings plated at pH8 are crystalline, whereas coatings electrodeposited at pH5 are nanocrystalline in nature. XPS studies have demonstrated that as-deposited alloy plated at pH8 with DC contain only Co2+ and W6+ species, whereas that alloy plated at pH5 has significant amount of Co-0 and W-0 along with Co2+ and W6+ species. Again, Co2+ and W6+ are main species in all as-deposited PC plated alloys in both pH. Co-0 concentration increases upon successive sputtering of all alloy coatings. In contrast, mainly W6+ species is detected in the following layers of all alloys plated with PC. Alloys plated at pH5 show higher microhardness compared to their pH8 counterparts.

Genomic data of several organisms have revealed the presence of a vast repertoire of multi-domain proteins. The role played by individual domains in a multi-domain protein has a profound influence on the overall function of the protein. In the present analysis an attempt has been made to better understand the tethering preferences of domain families that occur in multi-domain proteins. The analysis has been carried out on an exhaustive dataset of 2 961 898 sequences of proteins from 930 organisms, where 741 274 proteins are comprised of at least two domain families. For every domain family, the number of other domain families with which it co-occurs within a protein in this dataset has been enumerated and is referred to as the tethering number of the domain family. It was found that, in the general dataset, the AAA ATPase family and the family of Ser/Thr kinases have the highest tethering numbers of 450 and 444 respectively. Further analysis reveals significant correlation between the number of members in a family and its tethering number. Positive correlation was also observed for the extent of a sequence and functional diversity within a family and the tethering numbers of domain families. Domain families that are present ubiquitously in diverse organisms tend to have large tethering numbers, while organism/kingdom-specific families have low tethering numbers. Thus, the analysis uncovers how domain families recombine and evolve to give rise to multi-domain proteins.

Hydrogen bonded complexes formed between the square pyramidal Fe(CO)(5) with HX (X = F, Cl, Br), showing X-H center dot center dot center dot Fe interactions, have been investigated theoretically using density functional theory (DFT) including dispersion correction. Geometry, interaction energy, and large red shift of about 400 cm(-1) in the FIX stretching frequency confirm X-H center dot center dot center dot Fe hydrogen bond formation. In the (CO)(5)Fe center dot center dot center dot HBr complex, following the significant red shift, the HBr stretching mode is coupled with the carbonyl stretching modes. This clearly affects the correlation between frequency shift and binding energy, which is a hallmark of hydrogen bonds. Atoms in Molecule (AIM) theoretical analyses show the presence of a bond critical point between the iron and the hydrogen of FIX and significant mutual penetration. These X-H center dot center dot center dot Fe hydrogen bonds follow most but not all of the eight criteria proposed by Koch and Popelier (J. Phys. Chem. 1995, 99, 9747) based on their investigations on C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis indicates charge transfer from the organometallic system to the hydrogen bond donor. However, there is no correlation between the extent of charge transfer and interaction, energy, contrary to what is proposed in the recent IUPAC recommendation (Pure Appl.. Chem. 2011, 83, 1637). The ``hydrogen bond radius'' for iron has been determined to be 1.60 +/- 0.02 angstrom, and not surprisingly it is between the covalent (127 angstrom) and van der Waals (2.0) radii of Fe. DFT and AIM theoretical studies reveal that Fe in square pyramidal Fe(CO)(5) can also form halogen bond with CIF and ClH as ``halogen bond donor''. Both these complexes show mutual penetration as well, though the Fe center dot center dot center dot Cl distance is closer to the sum of van der Waals radii of Fe and Cl in (CO)5Fe center dot center dot center dot ClH, and it is about 1 angstrom less in (CO)(5)Fe center dot center dot center dot ClF.

The uncertainty in material properties and traffic characterization in the design of flexible pavements has led to significant efforts in recent years to incorporate reliability methods and probabilistic design procedures for the design, rehabilitation, and maintenance of pavements. In the mechanistic-empirical (ME) design of pavements, despite the fact that there are multiple failure modes, the design criteria applied in the majority of analytical pavement design methods guard only against fatigue cracking and subgrade rutting, which are usually considered as independent failure events. This study carries out the reliability analysis for a flexible pavement section for these failure criteria based on the first-order reliability method (FORM) and the second-order reliability method (SORM) techniques and the crude Monte Carlo simulation. Through a sensitivity analysis, the most critical parameter affecting the design reliability for both fatigue and rutting failure criteria was identified as the surface layer thickness. However, reliability analysis in pavement design is most useful if it can be efficiently and accurately applied to components of pavement design and the combination of these components in an overall system analysis. The study shows that for the pavement section considered, there is a high degree of dependence between the two failure modes, and demonstrates that the probability of simultaneous occurrence of failures can be almost as high as the probability of component failures. Thus, the need to consider the system reliability in the pavement analysis is highlighted, and the study indicates that the improvement of pavement performance should be tackled in the light of reducing this undesirable event of simultaneous failure and not merely the consideration of the more critical failure mode. Furthermore, this probability of simultaneous occurrence of failures is seen to increase considerably with small increments in the mean traffic loads, which also results in wider system reliability bounds. The study also advocates the use of narrow bounds to the probability of failure, which provides a better estimate of the probability of failure, as validated from the results obtained from Monte Carlo simulation (MCS).
