At present time, there is a lack of knowledge on the interannual climate-related variability of zooplankton communities of the tropical Atlantic, central Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea, and Aral Sea, due to the absence of appropriate databases. In the mid latitudes, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the dominant mode of atmospheric fluctuations over eastern North America, the northern Atlantic Ocean and Europe. Therefore, one of the issues that need to be addressed through data synthesis is the evaluation of interannual patterns in species abundance and species diversity over these regions in regard to the NAO. The database has been used to investigate the ecological role of the NAO in interannual variations of mesozooplankton abundance and biomass along the zonal array of the NAO influence. Basic approach to the proposed research involved: (1) development of co-operation between experts and data holders in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, UK, and USA to rescue and compile the oceanographic data sets and release them on CD-ROM, (2) organization and compilation of a database based on FSU cruises to the above regions, (3) analysis of the basin-scale interannual variability of the zooplankton species abundance, biomass, and species diversity.

Three sites drilled during Leg 122, Site 761 on the Wombat Plateau and Sites 762 and 763 on the Exmouth Plateau, provide a composite Cretaceous section ranging in age from Berriasian to Maestrichtian. Together, these sites contain an apparently complete, expanded Aptian-Maestrichtian record. Consistently occurring and moderately well-preserved nannofossil assemblages allow reasonably high biostratigraphic resolution. Our data indicate that traditional middle and Upper Cretaceous nannofossil biozonations are not entirely applicable in this region. In this investigation, we compare in detail the relative ranges of key Cretaceous nannofossil markers in the eastern Indian Ocean and in sections from Europe and North Africa. We have determined which previously used events are applicable, and which additional markers have biostratigraphic utility in this region. Significant differences in Campanian-Maestrichtian assemblages exist between the more northern Site 761 and Sites 762 and 763. Such differences are surprising, considering that these sites are only separated by 3° of latitude. We interpret them as marking a strong thermal gradient over the Exmouth Plateau region. Other results include the recovery of an expanded Albian-Cenomanian sequence containing a mixture of Austral and Tethyan floras, which will enable correlation of biozonations established for these two realms; the recovery of two condensed but apparently complete Cenomanian-Turonian boundary sections; correlation of Upper Cretaceous calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy with magneto- and foraminifer stratigraphy; and correlation of portions of the Barrow Group equivalents to the Berriasian and Valanginian stages.

The study site was located in the Disko Bay off Qeqertarsuaq, western Greenland. Due to land-connected sea ice coverage during winter, 2 sampling sites were combined. At the first site in winter (21 February to 23 March 2008), sampling was conducted through a hole in the ice at ca. 65 to 160 m depth approximately 0.5 nautical mile (n mile) south of Qeqertarsuaq (69° 14' N, 53° 29' W). In spring and summer (9 April to 18 July), sampling was done at a monitoring station 1 n mile south from Qeqertarsuaq (69° 14' N, 53° 23' W) at 300 m depth. Sampling was carried out between 10:00 and 17:00 h. During sampling from the ice, mesozooplankton was collected using a modified WP-2 net (45 µm) equipped with a closing mechanism (Hydrobios). Samples were collected in 3 depth strata (0-50, 50-100, and 100-150 m). During ship-based sampling, mesozooplankton was collected with a multinet (50 µm) equipped with a flow meter (Multinet, Hydrobios type midi), and 2 additional depth strata (150-200m and 200-250 m) were included. In addition to the seasonal study one diurnal investigation with sampling every 6 h was conducted from 29 April at 12:00 h to 30 April 30 at 12:00 h. Samples were immediately preserved in buffered formalin (5% final concentration) for later analyses. Biomass values of the different copepod species were calculated based on measurements of prosome length, and length/weight relationships. Two regressions for Calanus spp. were established for biomass calculations: one applicable prior to and during the phytoplankton bloom until 4 May, and another from 9 May onwards.

Stratigraphic assemblages of Quaternary through early Eocene benthic foraminifers were recovered among 10 Peru margin drill sites. Various hiatuses and intervals barren in foraminifers characterize the sections, but numerous samples contain abundant, well-preserved benthic foraminifers. Bathymetry of the extant species and California-based estimates of the paleobathymetry of the extinct species permit recognition of Quaternary sea-level fluctuations between shelf and upper bathyal depths that produced vertical migrations of oxygenated and low-oxygen habitats at the six shallow sites. Assemblages from lower-slope sites at about 9° and 11°S indicate a general subsidence of the continental margin from shelf or upper bathyal depths in Eocene time to the present lower bathyal depths. Data from 11°S suggest a major part of this subsidence occurred in late Oligocene to early Miocene time. Downslope-transported shelf specimens, particularly the small biserial species, Bolivina costata and B. vaughani, are major contributors to these lower bathyal assemblages from the middle Miocene through Quaternary time.

During the cruises 3 and 15 of R.V. "Meteor", representatives of 7 families of benthic abyssal gastropods were collected. The prevalent group was the Turridae; the Naticidae are represented by 2 species, the remaining families by a single species each. A survey of the frequency and distribution of the species within the study area is given. A systematic part deals with the individual species in detail, including notes on taxonomy, material and distribution. Concerning the composition of the abyssal gastropod fauna of the present material, Neogastropoda are 4 times as many as Archaeogastropoda and 6 times as many as Mesogastropoda and Opisthobranchia. 89 % of all specimens are Neogastropoda. Usually deep-sea organisms have a non-pelagic development, but many of the Iberian deep-sea Turrids have a planktotrophic protoconch, that means a long pelagic larval period. Among the 19 species, 2 are cosmopolitan, 9 show a transatlantic distribution and 8 are confined to East-Atlantic basins.
