The electrochemical behavior of Cu-xAl alloys, with 11 wt%less than or equal to x less than or equal to 15wt%, in 0.5 M H2SO4 was studied by means of open-circuit potential decay measurements, quasi-stationary and fast cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Some of the alloys (x less than or equal to 14%), when quenched formed martensitic structures. Alloys with greater than or equal to 13% showed a little square-shaped phase when quenched from temperatures around 800 degrees C. It was observed that in sulfuric medium, these formations were dealuminized differently than the martensitic phase. The values of the rest potentials are more influenced by the heat treatment rather than by the alloy composition. An anodic Tafel slope of ca. 60 mV/decade was observed for all the alloys, independently of the heat treatment. This is explained in terms of a competition between two processes: copper oxidation and copper(I) deproportionation. In the cyclic voltammetric experiments it was observed an anodic current peak, related with copper oxidation with a possible formation of some interfacial species, and a cathodic current peak during the reverse potential scan, associated with the reduction of soluble species and/or of the film. The AC Impedance data were interpreted in terms of electric equivalent circuits.

Ti-Mo alloys from 4 to 20 Mo wt.% were arc-melted. Their compositions and surfaces were analyzed by EDX, XRF and SEM. The Mo mapping shows a homogeneous distribution for all alloys. The XRD analysis showed that the crystal structure of the alloys is sensitive to the Mo concentration; a mixture of the hexagonal alpha' and orthorhombic alpha '' phases was observed for the Ti-4Mo alloy, and the alpha '' phase is observed almost exclusively when the concentration of Mo added to the Ti reaches 6%. A significant retention of the beta phase is observed for the alloy containing 10% Mo, while at higher Mo concentrations (15% and 20%), retention of phase beta is only verified. Preliminary electrochemical studies have indicated a valve-metal behavior and good corrosion resistance in aerated Ringer solution for all alloys. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

In the last 50 years several studies have been made to understand the relaxation mechanisms of the heavy interstitial atoms present in transition metals and their alloys. Internal friction measurements have been carried out in a Nb-Ti alloy containing 3.1 at.% of Ti produced by the Materials Department of Chemical Engineering Faculty of Lorena (Brazil), with several quantities of oxygen in solid solution using a torsion pendulum. These measurements have been performed by a torsion pendulum in the temperature range from 300 to 700 K with an oscillation frequency between 0.5 and 10 Hz. The experimental results show complex internal friction spectra that have been resolved, into a series of Debye peaks corresponding to different interactions. For each relaxation process it was possible to obtain the height and temperature of the peak, the activation energy and the relaxation time of the process. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thermal behavior of alpha-(Cu-Al-Ag) alloys, i.e. alloys with composition less than about 8.5 mass% Al, was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicated that the presence of silver introduces new thermal events ascribed to the formation of a silver-rich phase and, after addition higher amounts than 8 mass% Ag to the Cu-8 mass% Al alloy it is possible to observe the formation of the gamma(1) phase (Al4Cu9), which is only observed in alloys containing minimum of 9 mass% Al. These results may be attributed to some Ag characteristics and its interaction with Cu and Al.

The effects of bath composition and electroplating conditions on structure, morphology, and composition of amorphous Fe-Cr-P-Co deposits on AISI 1020 steel substrate, priorly plated with a thin Cu deposit, were investigated. The increase of charge density activates the inclusion of Cr in the deposit. However, above specific values of the charge density, which depend on the deposition current density, the Cr content in the deposit decreases. This Cr content decreasing is probably due to the significant hydrogen evolution with the increasing of deposition cur-rent and charge density. The effect of charge density on the content of Fe and Co is not clear. However, there is a tendency of increasing of Fe content and decreasing of Co content with the raising of current density. The Co is more easily deposited than the P, and its presence results in a more intense inhibition effect on the Cr deposition than the inhibition effect caused by P presence. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that Co increasing in the Fe-Cr-P-Co alloys analyzed does not promote the susceptibility to microcracks, which led to a good quality deposit. The passive film of the Fe-Cr-P-Co alloy shows a high ability formation and high protective capacity, and the results obtained by current density of corrosion, j(cor), show that the deposit with addition of Co, Fe31Cr11P28Co30, presents a higher corrosion resistance than the deposit with addition of Ni, Fe54Cr21P20Ni5. The mechanical properties of metals with bee structure, such as niobium and their alloys, are changed of a significant way by the introduction of heavy interstitial elements. These interstitial elements (oxygen, for example) present in the metallic matrix occupy octahedral sites and constitute an elastic dipole of tetragonal symmetry and might produce anelastic relaxation. Polycrystalline samples of Nb-0.3 wt.% Ti (Nb-Ti) alloy with oxygen in solid solution were analysed. The anelastic spectroscopy measurements had been made in a torsion pendulum, with frequencies in the Hz range, in a temperature range between 300 and 700 K. The results showed thermally activated relaxation structures were identified four relaxation process attributed to stress-induced ordering of single oxygen, nitrogen and carbon atoms around niobium and stress-induced ordering of single oxygen atoms around titanium atoms. Polysiloxane hybrid films were deposited on stainless steel by dip-coating using a sol prepared by hydrolytic co-polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS), followed by radical polymerization of methacrylic moieties. The TEOS/MPTS ratio was chosen equal to 2 and the Ce/Si ratio varied between 0.01 and 0.1. The effects of cerium concentration and valence (Ce(III) and Ce (IV)) on the structural features of polysiloxane films were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and (29)Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The corrosion protection of stainless steel by the hybrid coatings was investigated by XPS, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization curves, after immersion in saline and acid solutions. The NMR results have shown for Ce(IV) doped films a high degree of polycondensation of up to 89%. Electrochemical analysis has evidenced that hybrid films with the lowest Ce concentration act as an efficient diffusion barrier by increasing the corrosion resistance and reducing the current densities up to 3 orders of magnitude compared to bare stainless steel. The analysis of structural effects induced by Ce(III) and Ce(IV) species, performed by XPS, indicates that the improved corrosion protection of Ce(IV) doped films might be mainly related to the enhanced polymerization of siloxane groups. In this work the effect of Ag concentration on the thermal behavior of the Cu-10 mass% Al and Cu-11 mass% Al alloys with additions of 4, 6, 8 and 10 mass% Ag was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), in situ X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that for the Cu-10 mass% Al alloy Ag addition induce the beta'(1) phase formation and for the Cu-11 mass% Al alloy these additions increase the amount of martensite formed on quenching and decrease the stability range of this phase on heating.

Spontaneous deposition and electrochemical deposition by potential perturbation programs were used to place cerium-containing species on platinum surfaces in acid solution. Cyclic voltammetric profiles of cerium-modified platinum surfaces obtained after potentiostatic or potentiodynamic procedures (applied in the true hydrogen evolution region) differ from those recorded after spontaneous methods. However, the catalytic effects are nearly the same on these cerium-modified platinum surfaces for methanol electrooxidation, i.e. lower onset potential values for the anodic reaction. Besides, a different electrocatalytic effect was observed at large positive potentials on methanol oxidation due to the cerium oxide capability of oxygen storage. This effect is observed on platinum modified by a drastic potentiostatic procedure (by applying -2.0 V) in cerium(IV) acid solution. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The completeness of beta-phase decomposition reaction in the Cu-11wt%Al-xwt%Ag alloys (x = 0, 1, 2, and 3) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and optical microscopy (OM). The results indicated that beta-phase transformations are highly dependent on cooling rate and on the presence of Ag. on slow cooling, the silver presence prevents the beta- and beta(1)-phase decomposition; thus, inducing the martensitic phase formation. After rapid cooling, a new thermal event is observed and the reverse martensitic transformation is shifted to lower temperatures.

The localized corrosion of Al-(5.03%)Zn-(1.67%)Mg-(0.23%)Cu alloys and high purity Al has been studied using electrochemical techniques, optical microscopy, SEM and EDX. The samples were previously submitted to different heat treatments in which coherent and incoherent MgZn 2 precipitates with different distribution and aggregation degree were produced. The influence of NaCl and Na 2SO 4, dissolved oxygen, immersion time and convection were studied. In NaCl solutions, pitting potentials for the alloys were more negative than for aluminium, indicating an increase in their susceptibility to localized corrosion. Moreover, annealed and cold-rolled alloys presented more negative pitting and repassivation potentials than those submitted to age hardening with direct or interrupted quenching. In annealed and cold-rolled samples, pit nucleation and propagation takes place in the zones where MgZn 2 is accumulated. In the case of the age-hardened alloys, a double pitting behaviour is observed, the first one in the magnesium and zinc enriched regions and the second in the matrix. While the cold water quenched alloy is susceptible to stress corrosion craking, the alloy submitted to the interrupted quenching process is less susceptible to intergranular attack. The sulphate ion shifts the pitting potential of aluminium and the alloys by chloride towards more positive values because it impedes local accumulations of the latter. © 1992 Chapman & Hall.

In the last 30 years several studies have been made to understand the relaxation mechanisms of the hydrogen atoms present in transition metals and their alloys. In this work, we observed the stress-induced ordering of hydrogen atoms around the interstitial oxygen atoms near the niobium matrix atoms. We studied this relaxation process by measuring the attenuation of longitudinal ultrasonic waves. These measurements were made in Nb1.0%Zr polycrystalline alloys at 10 and 30 MHz, pure and doped with 0.7 and 4.2 at.% hydrogen. The results revealed a thermally activated relaxation structure around 202 K and 235 K for 10 MHz and 30 MHz respectively. This relaxation structure increases with increasing hydrogen concentration. © 1994.

The dispersion relations along the principal symmetry directions in BCC lithium-sodium alloys are calculated using second-order perturbation theory. The local modified Hoshino-Youngmodel potential was used for the lithium and the local Harrison model potential for sodium. The phonon density of states, the root mean square displacements and (Θ-T) curves are also calculated. In the absence of experimental data, just the theoretical predictions are presented here.
