This comprehensive Report, which marks the fruition of extensive work and consultations undertaken by the Benzodiazepine Committee represents a major step towards addressing inappropriate benzodiazepine use in this country. It sets out in some detail the facts about benzodiazepine usage in Ireland and makes recommendations across a number of areas. The Working Group on Elder Abuse is pleased to present this Report. It provides a foundation for the development of policy and procedures to respond to actual or alleged cases of elder abuse.  Aim of policy and proceduresThe aim of the policy and procedures presented here is to create a context in which older people and those concerned about the abuse of older people can disclose their concerns and receive an appropriate response. "I hadn't a penny": A review of State Income Supports Available to Young Parents

As Minister for Children, I am pleased to publish this paper which provides an overview of the income supports available for young parents. This paper has been commissioned as part of the evaluation of the Teenage Parents Support Initiative (TPSI) funded by the Department of Health and Children.The objective of this paper is to discuss the degree to which existing provision within the Irish welfare system meets the financial support needs of teenage parents, in particular, the level to which it meets the needs of different subgroups within the overall population of teenage parents. Immunisation Guidelines for Ireland

This revised report on immunisation guidelines for Ireland has been prepared with the assistance of an active committee from associated disciplines in Paediatrics, Infectious Diseases, General Practice and Public Health. The report itself is designed to be simple and concise and of course does not claim to contain all information on any pharmacological material. It does, however, give the current information and guidelines concerning immunisation. Vaccines are continually evolving and guidelines will obviously change given the nature of these developments. This is a tribute to the pharmaceutical industry who invest so much money in research and development in this particular field. Download document here

Final Evaluation Report of the Teen Parents Support Initiative

The evaluation was commissioned by the Department of Health and Children and undertaken by the Centre for Social and Educational Research, Dublin Institute of Technology. The content of the report relates from the Initiativeâ?Ts launch in July 1999 to June 2002.The Initiative sought to provide a range of additional support services for teen parents during pregnancy, until their children reached 2 years of age. Report of the Inspector of Mental Hospitals for 2001

] The Mental Treatment Act 1945 requires the inspection of every public psychiatric hospital and unit at least once a year, and of every private hospital and the Central Mental Hospital twice a year. These inspections were carried out on both announced and unannounced visits. In recent years, the number of un-announced visits has increased. The general format of an announced visit is that the Inspectorate, before beginning the inspection, meets with senior members of the service being inspected, bringing with it the statistical returns made by that service to the Department of Health and Children at the end of the preceding year and a copy of the health boardâ?Ts service plan in respect of the service.   Download document here

National Study of Turnover in Nursing and Midwifery

Proceedings of the National Conference on the assessment of Older People's Health and Social Care Needs and Preferences

The Conference took place on May 30th, 2002 in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoigaire. It attracted over 250 delegates from across the statutory, voluntary and private sectors and the interest that was expressed in the Conference was indicative of the growing recognition of the importance of establishing a more co-ordinated way of conducting health and social care assessments for older people. The Conference provided the opportunity to both discuss the necessity for a standardised approach to conducting assessments and to explore the merits of establishing a national framework for the multi-disciplinary assessment of older people’s health and social care needs and preferences.   Download document here

Promoting Women's Health - A Population Investment For Ireland's Future

In line with its statutory brief, the Women's Health Council commissioned research to evaluate progress in achieving the objectives of the Department of Health and Children's 1997 Plan for Women's Health 1997-1999 the Plan) at national and regional level. This was used as the basis of a critique of the effectiveness of the implementation of the Plan to date and the development of proposals for:- building on the achievements to date- ensuring a dynamic role for the structures established as a result of the Plan, especially the regional Womenâ?Ts Health Advisory Committees (WHACs)- securing measurable health gain for women over the next 7-10 years.   Download document here

Department of Health and Children Business Plan 2002

The framework within which the Office of the CMO will operate for 2002 is that of the Departmentâ?Ts corporate implementation plan for the Strategy. The Office will contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the Department with regard to the Strategy, by participating in  relevant agreed activities so as to achieve the first national goal of better health for everybody.The stakeholders identified in the Strategy consultation process are those with whom appropriate linkages and communications need to be  established and managed if the Strategy is to be implemented effectively. European Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System report for Ireland 2001

EHLASS provides a harmonised approach throughout the EU to facilitate the analyses of intercountry differences in modes and distributions of home and leisure accidents. EHLASS contributes to the formulation of EU policies and initiatives on accidents and product safety. EHLASS is the only source of detailed information on home and leisure accidents in Ireland. Some general information is available through the Hospital In-Patient Enquiry (HIPE) system but this concentrates on medical diagnoses rather than on specific causes of accidents.This report is the eleventh national EHLASS report for Ireland. As Chairperson of the National Council on Ageing and Older People, it gives me great pleasure to introduce this report, Meeting the Health, Social Care and Welfare Services Information Needs of Older People in Ireland. The Council has asserted, in previous reports in the past, the need to improve information provision for older people in order to enable them to make informed decisions in relation to their health, social care and welfare services needs and preferences so that they can become partners in their own care. This is consistent with current policy initiatives intended to re-orientate services more towards the older person and to place him/her at the heart of service planning, delivery and evaluation. Our Duty to Care : the principles of good practice for the protection of children and young people

This document, which has been named Our Duty to Care, is aimed at community and voluntary organisations of any size or type that provide services for children. It offers guidance on the promotion of child welfare and the development of safe practices in work with children. It also gives information on how to recognise signs of child abuse and the correct steps to take within organisations if it is suspected, witnessed or disclosed. The process of reporting suspected or actual child abuse to the health board is described step by step, and guidance is given on how to handle sensitive areas. Download document here
