From the 1940s until 2003, portions of the island of Vieques, a municipality within the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, were used by the US Navy as a base and training facility, resulting in development and zoning history that differ in comparison to other Caribbean islands. The majority of former Navy lands are now under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Interior’s Fish and Wildlife Service as a National Wildlife Refuge, while a smaller percentage of land was transferred to the Vieques municipality and the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust. An analysis of the distribution and status of the marine resources is timely in light of the recent land transfer, increases in development and tourism, and potential changes in marine zoning around the island. To meet this need, NOAA’s Biogeography Branch, in cooperation with the Office of Response and Restoration and other local and regional partners, conducted Part I of an ecological characterization to integrate historical data and research into a synthesis report. The overall objective of this report is to provide resource managers and residents a comprehensive characterization of the marine resources of Vieques to support research, monitoring, and management. For example, knowledge of the spatial distribution of physical features, habitats, and biological communities is necessary to make an informed decision of the establishment and placement of a marine protected area (MPA). The report is divided into chapters based on the physical environment (e.g., climate, geology, bathymetry), habitat types (e.g., reefs and hardbottom, seagrasses, mangroves) and major faunal groups (e.g. fish, turtles, birds). Each section includes five subsections: an overview, description of the relevant literature, methods of analysis, information on the distribution, status and trends of the particular resource, and a discussion of ecological linkages with other components of the Vieques marine ecosystem and surrounding environment. The physical environment of Vieques is similar to other islands within the Greater Antilles chain, with some distinctions. The warm, tropical climate of Vieques, mediated by the northeasterly trade winds, is characterized by a dry season (December-April) and a rainy season (May-November), the latter of which is characterized by the occasional passage of tropical cyclones. Compared to mainland Puerto Rico, Vieques is characterized by lower elevation, less annual precipitation, and higher average temperatures. The amount of annual precipitation also varies spatially within Vieques, with the western portion of the island receiving higher amounts of rainfall than further east. While the North Equatorial Current dominates the circulation pattern in the Greater Antilles region, small scale current patterns specific to Vieques are not as well characterized. These physical processes are important factors mitigating the distribution and composition of marine benthic habitats around Vieques. In general, the topography of Vieques is characterized by rolling hills. Mt. Pirata, the tallest point at 301 m, is located near the southwest coast. In the absence of island wide sedimentation measurements, information on land cover, slope, precipitation, and soil type were used to estimate relative erosion potential and sediment delivery for each watershed. While slope and precipitation amount are the primary driving factors controlling runoff, land use practices such as urban development, military activity, road construction, and agriculture can increase the delivery of pollution and sediments to coastal waters. Due to the recent land transfer, increased development and tourism is expected, which may result in changes in the input of sediments to the coastal environment.

日益加剧的重金属污染已经危害到了全球的生态环境以及人类健康。在分子水平上阐明植物中的重金属抗性机制并应用于环境修复和绿色农业是植物科学和环境科学以及农业科学的交叉点和新的生长点。为了了解植物重金属抗性的分子机制,我们的研究主要是从重金属抗性植物材料大蒜(Allium sativumL.)和绊根草(Cynodon dactylon)中分离重金属抗性相关基因,并研究它们在重金属抗性机制中的功能。 在高等植物中有迹象表明,一种富含半胱氨酸的低分子量蛋白.类金属硫蛋白 (Metallothioneins Like,MTs Like)和一类具有Y-(Glu-Cys) n-Gly特殊结构的多肽一植物络合素(Phytochelatins,PCs)在重金属抗性机制中占有重要地位。然而人们对于同一种植物中这两种重金属结合肽作用的相互关系还缺乏了解,同时对于MT Like基因以及PCs合酶基因在同一种植物中的表达模式如金属离子专一性、时空表达特点等,还投有文献报道,因此本文将首先以这两个基因为切入点进行研究。 本研究采用RACE的方法,从大蒜中分离得到了类金属硫蛋白(MT-Like)的cDNA序列(GenBank Accession No.AY050510),PCR和SoutheLrn Blot分析表明,大蒜基因组中不仅存在类金属硫蛋白基因,而且可能以基因家族的形式存在。对获得的MT Like cDNA进行的序列分析及同源性分析表明,大蒜MT Like cDNA含有一个完整的开放阅读框架,编码73个氨基酸,其中12个为半胱氨酸,占氨基酸总数的1 6.4%,并与其他植物如水稻、小麦、紫羊茅草中的类金属硫蛋白基因同源性较高,其中最高达89%。对该基因编码的氨基酸序列和结构分析表明在N-端、c-端结构域中分别含有3个典型的金属硫蛋白的结构模式Cys-Xaa-Cys,属于典型的Type-1类金属硫蛋白。这些Cys-Xaa-Cys特征结构表明大蒜MT Like基因编码的蛋白可以结合二价金属离子。重金属胁迫下大蒜根中MT Like基因在转录水平的表达检测表明,MT Like基因的表达受重金属离子Cu2+、Cd2+的诱导,暗示MT Like基因在大蒜对重金属的抗性中有重要作用。此外,用能谱电镜技术研究大蒜中重金属的积累与分布,以及用组织原位杂交技术分析MT Like基因的表达定位与重金属的积累、转运的关系已在进行之中。 植物络合素也是富含巯基的多肽化合物,在重金属抗性中起重要作用。由植物络合素结构中存在的Y一酰胺键或β-Ala可知PCs不是基因表达的直接产物,而是以GSH为前体的酶促反应产物。目前已知y一谷氨酰半胱氨酸二肽转肽酶(简称为PCs合酶,phytochelatin synthase,PCS)是PCs合成途径的关键酶,编码这一关键酶的基因目前已在小麦、拟南芥菜和裂殖酵母中克隆。由于这一基因在不同物种中的保守性较低,其克隆较困难。本研究通过设计植物络合素台酶基因简并引物,从大蒜中扩增得到了345bp的cDNA序列。序列分析和推测的氨基酸序列同源性比较表明,此序列的翻译产物与已知的植物络合素合酶同源性最高,此cDNA序列应为大蒜植物络合素合酶基因的部分cDNA序列(GenBank Accession No.AF384110)。目前大蒜植物络台素合酶基因的全长序列的扩增,以及这两种与重金属抗性有关的基因(MT Like,PCS)的表达模式仍在研究中。 本文还尝试了利用酵母重金属敏感突变株M379/8功能互补的方法从重金属抗性植物绊根革中分离新的重金属抗性相关基因。构建了用于转化的酵母质粒表达文库,探索了酵母转化体系建立的条件。曾尝试多种转化方法,并对其中的条件进行了优化改进。下一步的工作将集中在合适的酵母突变体的筛选或穿梭表达载体的选择标记基因替换上

本研究利用酵母功能互补方法和RACE的方法从具有较强抗逆能力的绊根草中克隆了9个与重金属抗性相关的克隆,并对部分基因的表达调控及功能进行了初步研究。同时还利用细胞工程技术筛选到了具有较强的耐受火箭推进齐-偏二甲肼(UDMH)的芦苇的变异株系,为以后用人工湿地系统处理受偏二甲肼污染的废水奠定了基础。 本研究通过酵母功能互补法克隆到了五个基因,分别为CdSRP、CdTETH、 CdASP、CdMT2和CdTER1。CdSRP可能是一种衰老相关基因;CdTETH编码的产物可能是组成TRAPP复合体的一个亚基;CdASP是一个功能未知的基因;CdMT2是一个编码Type Ⅱ型金属硫蛋白基因;CdTER1可能是编码一个TERl-like家族蛋白成员的基因。用这五个基因分别转化因Acr基因缺失而对As敏感的酵母菌株FD236-6A,所获得的转化子对As的抗性均有提高,其中以CdMT2、CdTER1和CdASP的作用最为明显。这些基因的表达调控方式以及与其它重金属抗性的关系正在研究中。 本研究还利用RACE的方法克隆了一个谷胱甘肽S-转移酶基因,CdGSTFl;两个植物络合素合酶基因,CdPCSI和CdPCSⅡ,和一个TypeⅠ型金属硫蛋白基因CdMT1。CdGSTF1属于phi类GST基因,Northern-blotting分析表明,CdGSTF1在绊根草根部的表达受Cd2+的诱导,暗示其可能具有解除氧自由基或氢过氧化物的毒性的作用。CdPCSI和CdPCSⅡ的同源性较高,表明绊根草含有两个以上的PCs合酶的基因。参照前人的方法对CdPCSI和CdPCSII的氨基酸序列进行分析,发现它们含有六个非常相近的Cd2+结合位点,这两个基因的功能及其调控方式有何差异尚需进一步的研究。cdMT1与用酵母功能互补法克隆到的CdMT2属于不同类型的MT基因,对它们之间很可能存在的功能、组织特异性等方面的差异性进行了讨论。 四氧化二氮/偏二甲肼是常用的航天器双组元液体推进剂。偏二甲肼易挥发,有致癌、致畸、致突变的毒性。在推进剂贮存、运输、转注、火箭发动机试车、火箭发射、管道及设备冲洗中产生的含有偏二甲肼的废水能够对卫星发射基地的地下水源和空气造成污染。因此迫切需要培育能够净化偏二甲肼污水的植物。 本研究利用生长在卫星发射基地的野生芦苇的种子诱导愈伤组织,进而通过逐步提高偏二甲肼筛选压力的方式从中筛选出具有较强抗性的愈伤组织,然后诱导其分化。目前已经得到能够在含有1.63 mmol/L和3.26 mmol/L偏二甲肼的分化培养基中生长良好的芦苇再生苗,并已成功转移至温室中。抗性分化苗对污水的处理效果和耐受偏二甲肼的机理正在研究中。

金属硫蛋白(metallothionein,MT)和植物络合素(phytochelatin,PC)是植物中能够与金属离子结合的两大类多肽。二者均富含Cys,但前者是mRNA的编码产物,后者是酶促反应的产物,植物络合素合酶(PCS)则是合成PC的关键酶之一。目前已发现许多植物同时存在金属硫蛋白基因和植物络合素合酶基因。研究重金属胁迫下这两类基因的表达对了解植物的重金属抗性的分子机制具有重要意义,同时还可以为培育能用于植物修复的品种提供新思路。 本论文从大蒜中克隆了一个type 2 MT基因,命名为AsMT2a,将其在大蒜中的表达模式与大蒜的植物络合素合酶基因(AsPCS1)进行了比较,并对二者的过表达转基因拟南芥的重金属抗性进行研究。其主要结果如下: 1. AsMT2a基因全长525 bp,编码79个氨基酸,其中有14个Cys 残基。 推测的氨基酸序列分析表明其Cys的位置和数目与来自其它植物的type 2 MT蛋白的完全一致。 2. RT-PCR的结果显示,大蒜根部AsPCS1的表达在Cd处理的短期(1 hr)内迅速增强,同时PCs含量也大幅度增加。但AsMT2a的表达在Cd处理10 hr后才有明显的增加。说明AsPCS1可能在植物对重金属的急性解毒方面起主要作用,而AsMT2a则在植物对重金属长久耐性中的离子平衡方面起更大作用。暗示在大蒜暴露于Cd胁迫的不同时期AsPCS1和AsMT2a基因可以互相协调而对重金属胁迫作出反应。此外,在不同胁迫条件下,AsPCS1和AsMT2a的表达模式不同,其中Cd、As和热激可以促进根中AsPCS1的表达和PCs的积累。 3.将AsPCS1和AsMT2a转入对砷和镉敏感的酵母菌株 FD236-6A中,RT-PCR的结果显示这两个基因均可在酵母中稳定表达,对转化子的重金属抗性实验表明这两个基因均可提高转化子对砷和镉的抗性。 4.将AsPCS1和AsMT2a 置于 CaMV 35S启动子下转入拟南芥中,RT-PCR结果表明,这两个基因均可在拟南芥中表达。有趣的是,AsPCS1在拟南芥中存在两个转录本,且二者均具有完整的ORF,其推测的氨基酸序列相差38个氨基酸。说明部分AsPCS1在拟南芥中经过了精确的剪切和拼接过程,但其机制尚不清楚。 5.在Cd 胁迫下,AsPCS1的超表达拟南芥的生长好于野生型植株,主要表现在转基因拟南芥的根较长,根数目较多;但在As胁迫下AsPCS1转基因植株与野生型植株没有明显的差别。与此不同的是将AsMT2a转入拟南芥后,转基因植株的As抗性明显增强,同样表现在根长度和根数目上。进一步将AsPCS1和AsMT2a同时转入拟南芥进行超表达,在Cd胁迫下,转基因植株的生长好于野生型植株,且种子萌发率也较高。 6.Cd和As胁迫下,AsPCS1过表达植株的PCs含量增加,同时Cd和As的积累量也明显增加,其中Cd胁迫下Cd含量增加最多,平均比野生型对照增加4倍;而As胁迫下As含量比野生型对照增加1.2倍。在Cd和As胁迫下,AsMT2a过表达植株的Cd和As积累量与野生型相比分别增加1.4倍和0.8 倍。双价基因AsMT2a +AsPCS1过表达植株的 Cd 积累量是野生型的5.8倍,是AsMT2a过表达植株的2.4 倍,是AsPCS1过表达植株的1.2倍。 在克隆AsMT2a的同时,我们还从大蒜中克隆到了一个金属硫蛋白基因家族的新成员,命名为AsMT2b,并对其功能进行了初步探讨。主要结果如下: 1.AsMT2b 全长520 bp,其开读框架为243 bp,编码80个氨基酸,其中含有15个Cys 残基。对推测的氨基酸序列分析表明AsMT2b的N端和C端domain内,Cys的数目和排列方式与其它type 2 MT蛋白明显不同。 其N 端domain内的结构为CXXC——CXC——CXC——CXCC,C端domain 内的结构为CXXC——CXC——CXC。暗示AsMT2b 可能具有与其它MT不同的生物学功能。 2.在较低浓度Cd(200 µM)胁迫下,AsMT2b的表达量随着处理时间(24 hr内)的延长而降低,但随着处理浓度的升高(500 µM)和处理时间延长(48 hr),其表达量又逐步增强,说明AsMT2b可能在胁迫强度增大到一定值时方起作用。 3. 将AsMT2b转入对Cd和As敏感的酵母菌株FD236-6A中,发现AsMT2b对酵母As抗性的提高贡献不大,但可明显提高酵母对Cd的抗性。 4.对AsMT2b的超表达拟南芥的重金属抗性分析表明,与野生型植株比较,转基因植株具有较强的Cd抗性,表现在Cd胁迫下,种子的萌发率较高,根较长,侧根数较多。但在As胁迫下,转基因植株的生长和野生型没有明显差异。可以看出,转AsMT2b的拟南芥对重金属的抗性不同于转AsMT2a的植株,前者的抗Cd性较强,而后者的抗As性较强。 5. Cd胁迫下,AsMT2b过表达拟南芥的Cd含量明显增加,平均比野生型对照植株增加70%,但各个株系的增加幅度不一致。 另外,我们还对CdCl2胁迫下,大蒜幼苗中镉的积累及氧化胁迫和抗氧化能力的变化进行了研究。结果表明在CdCl2 胁迫下,大多数Cd在根部积累,而只有少量的Cd积累于叶片中。5 mM 和10 mM CdCl2 抑制SOD和CAT的活性,但随着处理时间的延长,二者的活性回复到对照水平或高于对照。在CdCl2胁迫下,POD的活性明显增强,同时脂质过氧化产物积累。这些结果说明镉胁迫下,植物细胞中氧化胁迫加剧,而抗氧化酶活性的增强是植物对次生氧化胁迫的一种适应策略。 综上所述,在重金属胁迫下, AsPCS1和AsMT2a之间及AsMT2a和AsMT2b之间均表现出明显的协调反应。这种协调反应可能是植物维持细胞内离子稳态的机制之一。而重金属胁迫下,过表达AsPCS1,AsMT2a或AsPCS1+AsMT2a的拟南芥体内的重金属含量明显增加,表明这些基因可望用于重金属污染土壤的植物修复中。

Intergeneric hybridization between the epinepheline serranids Cephalopholis fulva and Paranthias furcifer in waters off Bermuda was investigated by using morphological and molecular characters. Putative hybrids, as well as members of each presumed parent species, were analyzed for 44 morphological characters and screened for genetic variation at 16 nuclear allozyme loci, two nuclear (n)DNA loci, and three mitochondrial (mt)DNA gene regions. Four of 16 allozyme loci, creatine kinase (CK-B*), fumarase (FH*), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH-S*), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-B*), were unique in C. fulva and P. furcifer. Restriction fragments of two nuclear DNA intron regions, an actin gene intron and the second intron in the S7 ribosomal protein gene, also exhibited consistent differences between the two presumed parent species. Restriction fragments of three mtDNA regions—ND4, ATPase 6, and 12S/16S ribosomal RNA—were analyzed to identify maternal parentage of putative hybrids. Both morphological data and nuclear genetic data were found to be consistent with the hypothesis that the putative hybrids were the result of interbreeding between C. fulva and P. furcifer. Mean values of 38 morphological characters were different between presumed parent species, and putative hybrids were intermediate to presumed parent species for 33 of these characters. A principal component analysis of the morphological and meristic data was also consistent with hybridization between C. fulva and P. furcifer. Thirteen of 15 putative hybrids were heterozygous at all diagnostic nuclear loci, consistent with F1 hybrids. Two putative hybrids were identified as post-F1 hybrids based on homozygosity at one nuclear locus each. Mitochondrial DNA analysis showed that the maternal parent of all putative hybrid individuals was C. fulva. A survey of nuclear and mitochondrial loci of 57 C. fulva and 37 P. furcifer from Bermuda revealed no evidence of introgression between the parent species mediated by hybridization.

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): The 250-year net annual snow accumulation, or mass balance, time series derived from the Mt. Logan (Yukon) ice core has been spectrally analyzed and is found to contain a nominal 11-year waveform. The stable isotope time series contains a significant amount of power between 9 and 13 years, although this record is evidently not a straightforward proxy for air temperatures. The signal in the mass balance time series exhibits a close relationship with the sunspot cycle waveform and is, therefore, assumed to be related to it. Waveforms showing a high correlation with the solar cycle are found in other climate data in the region. ... Taken collectively, the data point to a link between solar variability, atmospheric variability, climate, and selected ecological dynamics in the Pacific Northwest, but other data, not presented, indicate these relationships may hold elsewhere. So far, the evidence is empirical; complete details of the physical mechanisms involved have yet to be synthesized in a satisfactory way.

新疆中部地区位于西北内陆干旱一半干旱区,是欧亚大陆的地理中心,是中纬度内陆干旱区代表性区域,也是全球变化敏感区域之一,基本特点是气候干旱、水资源匮乏、植被稀少、荒漠广布,生态系统脆弱。在研究区域内,天山山脉海拔高度差异5 000 m左右,随海拔梯度下降依次出现高山冰雪带、高山亚高山草甸带、森林带、草原带、荒漠带、沙漠带等明显完整的植被垂直带,是开展现代孢粉学和植被变化研究的理想地点。本报告在立足于该区前人工作的基础上,从表土花粉、空气花粉和现代植被之间的关系入手开展现代孢粉学研究,探讨了花粉与植被的关系。 在研究区内,选择新疆阜康市和吉木萨尔县为研究地点,设计了一条从天山博格达峰附近雪线开始直至古尔班通古特沙漠长约100 km、宽约20 km的样带。沿样带,从高山座垫植被和草甸带开始,经过中海拔地带的云杉林,置到低海拔的荒漠,在山地海拔每下降20~100 m采集一个表土花粉样品,平原每间隔10~20 km采集一个表土花粉样品,同时做现代植被调查,共采集80个表土花粉样品和调查了86个现代植被样方;在天山乌鲁木齐河河源区的大西沟,从一号冰川前缘开始,沿山谷向下直到谷口,按海拔100 m间隔采集了14个表土样品,对表土花粉与植被之间的关系进行了探讨。为了弄清空气花粉传播、散布与气象因子和植被的关系,沿样带从高山到沙漠分别在天池气象站、中国科学院阜康荒漠生态系统定位研究站和北沙窝草炭试验地设置了三个风标式空气花粉收集器,从2001年7月至2002年7月连续收集空气花粉雨,收集了跨2个年度1周年的1 14个空气花粉样品,依据分析结果研究了空气花粉的传播和散布规律以及与表土花粉和植被之间的关系,这在新疆地区乃至全国尚属首次。 根据表土花粉分析结果和现代植被样方资料的分析以及天山中段主要植物种类沿海拔高度的分布特征,天山中段北坡垂直植被带谱为:高山座垫植被(>3 400 m)、高山亚高山草甸(3 400-2 700 m)、山地云杉林(2 700-1 720 m)、森林草原过渡带(1 720-1 300 m)、蒿类荒漠(1 300-700 m)和典型荒漠(<700 m)。表土花粉谱基本上反映了相同海拔高度的现代植被带,特别是在云杉林带,表土中雪岭云杉(Picea schrenkiana)花粉占优势;在蒿类荒漠植被带表土中蒿属(Artemisia)植物花粉非常丰富;在典型荒漠植被带的表土中藜科(Chenopodiaceae)植物花粉占绝对优势,因此可依据这些建群种植物花粉含量峰值的位置划分植物群落。 空气花粉样品分析结果表明:空气中花粉主要是现生植物当年生长产出的花粉,盛花期的花粉数量能较好地反映当地的植被状况。空气中的乔木植物花粉主要有云杉(Picea),其次是柳属(Salix);灌木草本植物花粉主要是藜科和蒿属,其次是菊科(Compositae)、禾本科(Gramineae)、柽柳科(Tamaricaceae)和麻黄属(Ephedra);空气中的花粉数量与植物的花期相对应,云杉等乔木植物盛花期在夏季5月末至7月初,灌木草本植物盛花期在夏秋季节。气温、降水、风速和风向等气象条件对空气中花粉数量有很大影响,其中风速和风向影响最大。从空气花粉和表土花粉的分析结果与现生植被对比,新疆中部地区的山谷上升气流是导致花粉“爬坡”现象的主要动力,在一定条件下,上升气流搬运花粉的数量和能力是十分可观的。 空气中的花粉是现生植物当年生长产出的花粉,表土中的花粉是多年花粉落地沉积的积累,植物盖度大,该植物的花粉在空气中和表土中数量相对就大。在新疆中部地区,空气花粉能反映当地和附近周边方圆约50 km的植被状况,其花粉组合特征与表土花粉和当地现生植被分布的对比研究,可以较好地寻找花粉与植被的关系。本研究报告的研究成果不仅为新疆地区的孢粉学研究增添新的内容,而且将有助于合理解释新疆地层中、尤其是第四纪以来的地层孢粉,较客观地恢复过去的植被景观,同时可为本地区的大气环境检测提供有重要价值的参考资料。

This paper presents a time-stepping shaker modeling scheme. The new method improves the accuracy of analysis of armature-position-dependent inductances and force factors, analysis of axial variation of current density in copper plates (short-circuited turns), and analysis of cooling holes in the magnetic circuit. Linear movement modeling allows armature position to be precisely included in the shaker analysis. A more accurate calculation of eddy currents in the coupled circuit is in particular crucial for the shaker analysis in a mid-or high-frequency operation range. Large currents in a shaker, including eddy currents, incur large Joule losses, which in turn require the use of a cooling system to keep temperature at bay. Sizable cooling holes have influence on the saturation state of iron poles, and hence have to be properly taken into account.

本文研究了重金属在菲律宾蛤仔体内的富集及其毒理效应,包括镉(Cd)对菲律宾蛤仔的毒性、Cd在蛤仔体内不同组织的富集规律、锌(Zn),铅(Pb)单一胁迫及联合胁迫下,蛤仔消化腺和鳃Zn、Pb的富集及其金属硫蛋白的含量变化。 利用水生生物毒性试验方法,分6个浓度梯度进行Cd对蛤仔的急性毒性实验,得出48h、96h半数致死量,分别为4.790mg/L、0.878mg/L,计算出Cd对菲律宾蛤仔的安全质量浓度为0.00878mg/L。根据急性毒性实验结果设定实验用海水中Cd的浓度分别为10μg/L、50μg/L、100μg/L、200μg/L及一个对照组共5组,研究了Cd在蛤仔不同组织内的积累规律。结果表明菲律宾蛤仔鳃和消化腺对Cd的富集能力较强,远高于外套膜和肌肉。实验同时显示,随着时间的延长,Cd的浓度增加,Cd富集量也增加。

The Nabugabo lakes are an important source of affordable protein food in the form of fish, income, water for domestic and commercial purposes (aquaculture farm and Hotels), handcraft materials (mats, hats, roof thatch) and fishing floats and rafts. Nabugabo lakes provide employment, income and export earnings to Uganda that flow from the act of harvesting the fish. In Uganda the fisheries sector directly employs 350,000 people and indirectly 1.2 million people. In 2005, it is estimated that about 370,000 mt fish export (97-98% Nile perch) earned Uganda US $ 143 Million up from US $ 103 million in 2004 .and up from US $ 45 million in 1996. , making it almost become the first non' traditional export commodity. The Nabugabo lakes are also import for cultural values and fish species from these lakes are important in evolutionary studies. The fishery sector is therefore very important in Uganda's socio-economic life. Despite the above values to the communities and global biodiversity roles, the amount of fish caught and the number fishing fleets operating on the Nabugabo lakes to guide management of the lake are lacking. The fishery that exists in these lakes is largely for subsistence and commercial purposes specific for Lake Nabugabo based on introduced species (Nile perch and Nile Tilapia). The fish is caught using mainly gill nets and long line hooks.

By using 19 Y chromosome biallelic markers and 3 Y chromosome microsatellite markers, we analyzed the genetic structure of 31 indigenous Sino-Tibetan speaking populations (607 individuals) currently residing in East, Southeast, and South Asia. Our results showed that a T to C mutation at locus M122 is highly prevalent in almost all of the Sino-Tibetan populations, implying a strong genetic affinity among populations in the same language family. Furthermore, the extremely high frequency of H8, a haplotype derived from M122C, in the Sino-Tibetan speaking populations in the Himalayas including Tibet and northeast India indicated a strong bottleneck effect that occurred during a westward and then southward migration of the founding population of Tibeto-Burmans. We, therefore, postulate that the ancient people, who lived in the upper-middle Yellow River basin about 10,000 years ago and developed one of the earliest Neolithic cultures in East Asia, were the ancestors of modem Sino-Tibetan populations.
