The effects of lamellar thickness on the epitaxial crystallization of polyethylene on the oriented isotatic polypropylene have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained from the bright field electron microscopy and electron diffraction show that the epitaxial orientation of the PE crystals on the iPP substrate depends not only on the thickness of the oriented iPP lamellae, but also on the lamellar thickness of PE crystals. No epitaxial orientation relationship between PE crystal and iPP substrate can be found, when the PE crystals are thicker than the lamellar thickness of iPP along the matching direction. This suggests, that the epitaxial nucleation of PE in the PE/iPP epitaxial system is controlled not only by the chain-row matching, but also by a secondary nucleation process.

New synthesis system was established to prepare polyaniline (PAn) with controlled molecular weight. The synthesized PAn was completely soluble in many organic solvents such as dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylformamide and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). The molecular aggregation due to the interaction between PAn and NMP molecules was found in dilute PAn/NMP solution. The gelatin of concentrated PAn/NMP solution was a physical crosslinking between PAn molecules with the help of NMP through hydrogen bonding. A gelatin mechanism was proposed.

Square-wave voltommetry is used to study the oxidation of polypyrrole doped with dodecylsulfate. The net current curve in this experiment shows why the oxidation current does not display the capacitive-like shape common in cyclic voltammetry. In cyclic voltammetry, the redox behavior of polypyrrole is attributed to the size of dodecylsulfate, irreversible incorporation and the complete consumption of dodecylsulfate. After the polypyrrole film was scanned in aqueous NaCl solution, square wave voltammetric measurements show different results, indicating the change of the polymer nature with regard to the charge transport. This is explained by anion replacement, exclusion and the change of the charge transport mechanism.

The diffusion rates of ferrocene have been estimated in five kinds of poly(ethylene glycol) solution, containing the electrolyte LiClO4, by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry. The D-app of ferrocene increases with increasing temperature, and the dependency of D-app on temperature obeys the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation. The D-app of ferrocene decreases with increasing polymer chain length. Both the chain length and temperature dependence conform to a simple free volume model. A relation between current and polymer chain length is suggested at room and high temperatures.

The diffusion rates of seven ferrocene derivatives have been estimated in polyelectrolyte PEG . LiClO4 by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry. The D-app of ferrocene derivatives increases with temperature, and the dependency of D-app on temperature obeys the Arrhenius equation. The D-app of ferrocene derivatives decreases with increasing size of electroactive species. The Delta D-app values of D-T>Tm and D-T

Gel electrolytes have been prepared by thermal polymerization of poly(polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P(PEGD)) in the presence of propylene carbonate (PC) and alkali metal salts, such as LiClO4, LICF(3)SO(3) and LiBF4. The conductivity was studied by means of impedance spectroscopy, and it is found that the temperature dependence of conductivities follow a Arrhenius relationship when the molar percentage of PC is higher than 75% or LiClO4 concentration is lower than 0.9 mol/l. However, when LiCF3SO3 or LiBF4 is used instead of LiClO4 as the salt, the situation is different. For LICF(3)SO(3), the Arrhenius relationship almost holds true for all the salt concentrations studied; while for LiBF4, the Arrhenius equation hardly fits for any salt concentration. The dependence of activation energy on salt concentration is also examined, both for LiClO4 and LiCF3SO3, the values of E(a) tend to reach a minimum value with increasing salt concentration. This article describes a quantitative study of the diffusion rate of ferrocene(Fc) dissolved in ploy(ethylene glycol)(PEG) medium containing MClO(4)(M = Li+, Na+, Bu(4)N(+), Hx(4)N(+)). The apparent diffusion coefficient D-app and the active concentration c(a) of Fc were simultaneously measured by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry. The D-app and c(a) of Fc have been estimated in PEG containing different concentrations and sizes of supporting electrolyte, and the dependence of D-app on ferrocene concentrations has been observed. The values of D-app decrease with increasing concentrations of Fc, increasing concentrations of LiClO4 or the ratio (O:Li) and also with 4 decreasing cation radius of the electrolyte. The temperature dependencies conform to a simple free volume model. The concentration and size of the counterion dependencies of the diffusion rate are similar to the behavior of their dependencies of ionic conductivity in polyelectrolyte.

The ESR of PPy films doped with Co (W2O7)(6)(10-) and CuW12O406- ions were reported and discussed. Results show that heteropolyanions not only play the role of neutralizing electricity in the PPy film, but also interact with the PPy molecular chain to form some adducts. The adducts affect the electronic structure of the PPy film and are unstable at more positive or more negative potentials. Dysonian ESR lineshape was recorded for the dry PPy film with CuW12O406- for the first time.

The theoretical model[17] of an ultramicroelectrode modified with a redox species film is used as the diagnostic tool to characterize the catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid at carbon fiber ultramicrodisk electrodes coated with an Eastman-AQ-Os(bpy)(3)(2+) film. The electrocatalytic behavior of ascorbic acid at the ultramicroelectrode modified by an Eastman-AQ polymer containing tris(2,2'-bipyridine) osmium(III/II) as mediators is described. In order to determine the five characteristic currents quantitatively, the radius of the ultramicroelectrode and the concentration of ascorbic acid are varied systematically. The kinetic zone diagram has been used to study the electrocatalytic system. This system with 0.5-2.75 mM ascorbic acid belongs to SR + E case, and the concentration profiles of the catalyst in the film are given in detail. Finally, optimizing the design of catalytic system is discussed.

In order to raise the room temperature ionic conductivity and improve the mechanical strength of a PEO-based polymer electrolyte, a non-crystalline two-component epoxy network was synthesized by curing diglycidyl ether of polyethylene glycol (DGEPEG) with triglycidyl ether of glycerol (TGEG) in the presence of LiClO4 salt, which acts in this system as both a ring opening catalyst and a source of ionic carrier. The structure of the precursors, the curing process and the cured films have been characterized by C-13 NMR, IR, DSC and ionic conductivity measurement techniques. The electrolyte system exhibits an ionic conductivity as high as similar to 10(-5) S/cm at 25 degrees C and is mechanically self-supportable. The dependence of ionic conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature, salt content, MW of PEG segment in DGEPEG and the proportion of DGEPEG in DGEPEG/TGEG ratio.

This paper describes the electrochemical oxidation and reduction of electroactive solutes which are dissolved in and diffusing through the polymer electrolyte solvent, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The characteristics of electrochemical reactions in polymeric solutions are discussed, including how rigid solvent environments affect mass transport rates, and the transport phenomenon of electroactive species in PEO with bathing gases is explained by using the voltammetric theory of ultramicroelectrodes. The possibility that the microelectrode coated with PEO film can be used as a gas sensor has been discussed.

Influence of ester group size in polymethacrylates (PMAs) , including PMMA, PEMA and PBMA, on beta phase crystallization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) in highly oriented films of PVF2/PMAs=80/20 blends has been investigated by FTIR and TEM. The melt-drawn films of pure PVF2 consist of highly oriented lamellae, in which the alpha phase is predominant. Adding a given amount of PMAs (20 wt%) into PVF2 results in formation of fibrillar crystals and increase of relative amount of the beta phase. The influence extent is in order of PMMA > PEMA > PBMA, regarding the ester group size in the PMAs.

An epoxy network-LiClO4 electrolyte system was prepared from diglycidyl ether of polyethylene glycol and triglycidyl ether of glycerol, cured in the presence of LiClO4 only. Various techniques were used to characterize the chemical structure of the precursors and the correlation between the viscoelasticity and conductivity of the cured films was examined.

Poly(2-acrylamido-hexadecylsulfonic acid) (PAMC16S) forms a stable monolayer on a pure water surface. More closely packed monolayers can be obtained when the subphase contains Cd2+ or Ca2+. Self-assembled monolayers have been formed on gold surfaces and characterized by contact angle measurement, XPS and electrochemical analysis. The results show that the monolayers are hydrophobic with the hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups adjacent to the metal surfaces and with the hydrocarbon chains extended from the surfaces. The monolayers exhibit great adsorption stability during the faradaic reactions, illustrating the advantage of polymeric LB films in potential applications.

Thin films of PSt/PMAA and PEO-PSt-PEO block polymers were deposited on a polystyrene substrate by solution adsorption (with or without solvent treatment), and the film surfaces were characterized by means of XPS. Direct solvent - casting of PEO-PSt-PEO from benzene solutions resulted in PSt-rich surfaces, whereas PMAA richer surfaces were obtained for PSt/PMAA films cast from DMF solutions. Moreover, solvent treatment after casting had profound effect on the film surface composition. Treatment with water markedly increased the surface concentration of polar PEO segments. In the case of PSt-PMAA block polymers, the PSt content on the surface increased in the order of water < ethanol < cyclohexane < petroleum ether, the last-named giving films with almost pure PSt surface. It is well worth noticing that the bulk composition had little to do with the surface composition for both PSt/PMAA and PEO-PSt-PEO block polymers within the composition range investigated when subsequent solvent treatment was applied.
