Since discovery, computed tomography is a widely used diagnostic modality. However, this modality imparts relatively high doses to the patients and with fast technological advancement, it is necessary optimize the doses used and ensure the quality of the images through a quality assurance program. This work intended to compare Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDIW) and effective dose with components of image quality: the Contrast-to-Noise Ratio (CNR) and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), and a quality factor (Q) deduced by the Rose model for two groups of computed tomography units. The first group was composed by equipments with 10 up to 16 slices and the second one presented 40 up to 320 slices detectors, for the protocols of head and abdomen. It was realized a comparison between different selectable parameters in the protocol of a Philips Brilliance 16, too. The results of the first group to CTDIW, effective dose, SNR and CNR showed variations of 28%, 33%, 37% and 32% respectively for head protocol, and 21%, 27%, 43% and 37% respectively for abdomen protocol. The results of the group 2 to CTDIW, effective dose, SNR and CNR showed variations of 15%, 26%, 36% and 34% respectively for the head protocol, and 8%, 13%, 50% and 60% respectively for abdomen protocol. The comparison between both groups demonstrated similar levels of doses impartation to patients though having so many different configurations, if the uncertainties associated with this measurement were considered. The results of the comparison between different parameters in the Philips Brilliance 16 scanner were in agreement with expected

Uremic syndrome, arising from kidney malfunction, consists of a set of systemic changes caused by the accumulation of toxic substances to the body. Since, with the advance of medicine, the animals lived more reaching advanced age and entering thus on track of senility, chronic renal disease, became a common complaint in the routine of the ambulatory. This high rate of morbidity generates an increased need for clarification of pathophysiology involved in this disease. The components of the uremic syndrome include water and sodium imbalance, anemia, intolerance to carbohydrate, neurological disorders, disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, osteoarthritis, immunological incompetence and metabolic acidosis. The clinical manifestations occur in isolation or in combination. In most cases canines patients are subject to an assessment when the kidney disease has evolved to the final stage with uremic syndrome and installed already, under these conditions, the prognosis is reserved

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is a non-inflammatory aseptic necrosis of the head of the femur that is found in both young animals and humans before the gap in the femur head closes. In the fields of both human and veterinary medicine the cause of this condition is not known for certain. Various factors have been put forward in the literature as being responsible for the incidence of this condition such as: abnormalities in coagulation, changes in blood flow in the arteries, a septic obstruction in the draining of the epiphysis or the upper parts of the femur, trauma, growth cycle, hyperactivity in a child, genetic influences and dietary factors. Case histories in dogs show that the first stages of the condition progress slowly but that limping or putting weight on the limb worsens at 6 to 8 weeks. Some owners talk about a sharp onset in clinical lameness. Other clinical symptoms may include irritability, loss of appetite and knawing at the hair surrounding the affected hip. In the course of physical examination manipulating the hip joint will cause pain to the animal. The advanced stages of the disease may result in restricted amplitude of movement, muscular atrophy and fracturing. In humans the clinical signs are similar, although progression of the disease is slower so that it can be diagnosed at an earlier stage. In veterinary medicine the diagnosis is, in the main, based on case history, clinical symptoms, physical examination and certain related procedures such as radiography. The various diagnoses include physical trauma and dislocation of the medial patella. In human medicine many people have been correctly diagnosed. Whatsmore, there is a range of related procedures that are virtually not available to veterinary medicine such as magnetic nuclear resonance, that show up necroses with great clarity before radiography and cintilography do, and is considered... This project aims the verification of doses in canines and felines to chest and coxal exams due to the transition from screen-film to computed radiography system. It also seeks a possible optimization of the new techniques employed in this new system. The study was carried out in Diagnostic Imaging service in Hospital Veterinário da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia da Universidade de São Paulo using a conventional x-ray equipment. Initially, data about the physical characteristics of animals and the technique currently used in computed radiography was collected for each of 80 chest and 16 coxal X-ray examinations. The animals were divided into different groups according to the body weight. For each group, were calculated the averages of each item: thickness of the region to be imaged, voltage, current, exposure time, current-time product, size of film used, presence or absence of bucky and focus (small or large). The techniques have been reproduced in phantoms (representative of the thickness of the animal) in order to collect the air kerma entrance. Based on the average of intermediate size M group (weights less than 5 kg for cats and from 10.1 kg and 20 kg for dogs) analysis of image quality using three devices test patterns were made consisting of the evaluation of spatial resolution, low-contrast resolution and contrast-detail. In general, the results showed the dose animals decreased with the use of computed radiography and was possible to preliminary optimization of some techniques used currently in CR

The purpose of this work is to provide quality control requirements and security in dental x-rays in order to obtain good quality image which allows the correct diagnosis, which reduces the dose to the patient, mainly due to the repetition of tests, and decreasing cost. The requirements apply to related activities to quality control and procedures using ionizing radiation for diagnostic imaging in dentistry by evaluating a minimum set of parameters to be tested or verified. Quality control follows the Ordinance No. 453 of the Ministry of Health of 06.01.1998, SS Resolution No. 625 of 12.14.1994 and Resolution No. 64 of the Health Surveillance Center – Department of Health of Sao Paulo and National Health Surveillance Agency – Ministry of Health of Brazil. This study was conducted in the city of Marilia, Sao Paulo, along with the Company P&R Consulting and Medical Physics, in a dental clinic of the University UNIMAR in the x-ray equipment used on that site. The physical parameters of the device were tested with the aid of ionization chambers to measure rates of radiation, electrometer to measure rates of time, kV and doses, radiographic films and positioning devices. Finally, this work demonstrates the need and importance of quality control, which one ensures the proper use of x-ray machines, maintaining efficiency and at the same time it reduces the risks to the patient, to the dentist and to the general public

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is one of the most serious complications of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in small animals (SILVA, 2006). It is an acute metabolic disorder, potentially fatal, both in humans and in dogs and cats with DM (BRUYETTE, 1997), being related, mostly, to insulin-dependent diabetics (CHASTAIN, 1981; HUME et al., 2006). DKA is a medical emergency characterized by extreme metabolic abnormalities, including hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis, ketonemia, dehydration and electrolyte loss (MACINTIRE, 2006) and its diagnosis may be established basically by the detection of ketonuria and metabolic acidosis (NELSON, 2009). The primary purposes of the treatment of DKA are intravascular volume restoration, dehydration, acid-base and electrolyte’s imbalances correction and blood glucose concentration reduction (BOYSEN, 2008). The treatment’s success depends of the clinical status at the time of diagnosis and of the introduction of an appropriate therapy to the conditions of each patient (CHASTAIN, 1981)

This study aimed to develop a computer program which systematizes the structural shielding design calculation in diagnostic radiology facilities. For this purpose methodology of the National Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP 147[5]) was used. By comparative statistics studies, it was verified if reference parameters values suggested by the US publication correspond to the average national values. The World Wide Web was chosen because of its characteristics as a powerful mean of communication, especially in terms of the wide variety of useful resources and easy access. To compare the reference values of some parameters proposed by NCRP 147 to Brazilian average, studies about the normalized workload per patient, performance of X-ray tube and primary air kerma, unshielded, at one meter from the focal point of the X-ray tube were made. Through this research, relative differences were found. In workload values this differences reached up to 50% in mammography compared to those presented by the NCRP 147; in X-ray tube performance the percentage differences reached 69% in dental radiology, and air kerma results amounted 31% in fluoroscopy. This demonstrates the importance of validation of international protocols to local realities

The Hyperadrenocorticism is a disease that occur in dogs between mead to old age, is associated with the higher level of glucocorticoid that result in a corporal reaction. To make a diagnostic of this disease is necessary have a good history and physical examination, the principals complains of the proprietary are polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia, in some times abdominal enlargement and lethargy. In the physical examination is observed this abdominal enlargement, hepatomegaly, alopecia, in some cases pyoderma and difficult respiratory. From this documents is possible determinate the differential diagnostics and with the tests find the diagnostic of the disease that the animal have. The base methods are hemogram, biochemical, urinalysis, radiographs and ultrasonography it’s possible do tomography and magnetic resonance too. There are confirmation methods too, they are very important, because the others not have documents necessary for the final diagnostic. Those are Urine cortisol to creatinine ratio, dexamethasone suppression test with high dose or low dose and ACTH stimulation test. Despite those tests have high sensibility and specificity, they can result in false positive or false negative, this is one of the causes to do the base methods and together make the veterinary doctor find the solution of the diagnostic and do the adequate treatment
