New geochemical proxy data from Bermuda Rise piston cores reveal ocean and climate conditions in the northern Sargasso Sea during marine isotope stage 3. Using ?18O on the planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides ruber, we can correlate explicitly with every stadial/interstadial change in Greenland ice between ~32 and 58 ka. These data suggest repetitive changes of ~4°C in the annual average sea surface temperature (SST), with maximum cooling comparable to or greater than SST during glacial maximum conditions. The extent of SST depression is about the same for typical stadial events and for Heinrich events 4 and 5, which we have identified on the Bermuda Rise by traces of ice rafting. Benthic foraminiferal d13C decreases during every stadial event, consistent with reduced production of the deepest component of North Atlantic Deep Water and shoaling of its interface with Antarctic Bottom Water. This interpretation is supported by benthic Cd/Ca data from the climate cycle associated with interstadial 8.

The present data set provides contextual environmental data for samples from the Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) that were selected for publication in a special issue of the SCIENCE journal (see related references below). The data set provides calculated averages of mesaurements made at the sampling location and depth, calculated averages from climatologies (AMODIS, VGPM) and satellite products.

Basalts from some holes of the Deep Sea Drilling Project contain secondary K-feldspar which forms pseudomorphs after calcic (>76% An) Plagioclase cores, whereas Plagioclase of rims and microlites (68-74% An) remains unaltered. In basalts of Hole 504B two such grains with relics of Plagioclase in the central parts of phenocysts were recovered. The composition of the Plagioclase rims and of non-replaced phenocrysts is An79-81; the composition of relics is An83. The An and Ab contents of the K-feldspar is higher than in K-feldspar from altered basalt in Hole 418A in the Atlantic Ocean near the Bermuda Rise. Replacement of plagioclases by K-feldspar evidently is caused by oxygen-rich nearbottom sea water penetrating into basalts. The temperature interval of K-feldspathization is probably in the range 30 to 80°C, more-calcic Plagioclase being replaced by K-feldspar at higher temperatures.

We report iron measurements for water column and aerosol samples collected in the Sargasso Sea during July-August 2003 (summer 2003) and April-May 2004 (spring 2004). Our data reveal a large seasonal change in the dissolved iron (dFe) concentration of surface waters in the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study region, from ~1-2 nM in summer 2003, when aerosol iron concentrations were high (mean 10 nmol/m**3), to ~0.1-0.2 nM in spring 2004, when aerosol iron concentrations were low (mean 0.64 nmol/m**3). During summer 2003, we observed an increase of ~0.6 nM in surface water dFe concentrations over 13 days, presumably due to eolian iron input; an estimate of total iron deposition over this same period suggests an effective solubility of 3-30% for aerosol iron. Our summer 2003 water column profiles show potentially growth-limiting dFe concentrations (0.02-0.19 nM) coinciding with a deep chlorophyll maximum at 100-150 m depth, where phytoplankton biomass is typically dominated by Prochlorococcus during late summer.
