Vários movimentos internacionais, como o da Promoção da Saúde, têm colocado o exercício da cidadania como estratégia de melhoria das condições de vida e saúde da população de países em desenvolvimento. A educação tem papel importante no desenvolvimento deste exercício, merecendo atenção especial a escola e o professor, por estar mais próximo do aluno. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi conhecer as representações sociais do professor sobre cidadania, sobre o aluno ser cidadão, além de sua visão sobre o seu papel e o da escola no desenvolvimento dela. Foram entrevistados quarenta professores de escola pública da cidade de São Paulo, e seus discursos foram analisados pela metodologia do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC). A maioria dos professores considera a escola como um espaço onde a cidadania deve ser desenvolvida e com o professor tendo grande responsabilidade nesse desenvolvimento; sabe da importância de suas atitudes e ensino na formação do aluno; reconhece o aluno como um futuro cidadão e percebe a cidadania como uma participação ativa na sociedade, além dos direitos e deveres. Os professores revelaram algumas atitudes favoráveis ao desenvolvimento do exercício da cidadania, apontando para o alcance de melhores condições de saúde e vida da população brasileira.

OBJETIVO:Avaliar mudanças em conhecimentos, atitudes e acesso/utilização de serviços odontológicos decorrentes de um programa de promoção da saúde bucal com agentes comunitários de saúde. MÉTODOS:Um projeto de capacitação combinando ensino-aprendizagem, apoio e supervisão, foi desenvolvido entre os meses de julho de 2003 a agosto de 2004. As mudanças foram avaliadas por meio de entrevistas estruturadas em que participaram 36 agentes comunitários de saúde e uma amostra de 91 mulheres e mães, representativa de donas de casa com 25 a 39 anos de idade, alfabetizadas e residentes em domicílios de três a seis cômodos no município de Rio Grande da Serra (SP). Foram colhidos dados sobre conhecimentos de saúde-doença bucal, práticas e capacidades auto-referidas em relação ao auto-exame, higiene bucal, número de residentes e de escovas dentais individuais e coletivas em cada domicílio e acesso e uso de serviços odontológicos. Por meio do teste t de Student pareado, foram comparadas as médias dos valores obtidos antes e depois do programa para cada um dos grupos estudados. As respostas foram analisadas adotando-se um nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: Foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas para questões relativas ao conhecimento de saúde bucal entre os agentes e entre as mulheres antes e depois da capacitação (p<0,05). Desequilíbrio entre o número de escovas e de indivíduos em cada família diminuiu. A freqüência da escovação e do uso do fio dental se elevou depois da atuação dos agentes. Os valores de auto-avaliação da higiene bucal aumentaram. Modificação nas práticas e capacidades auto-referidas mostrou significativa elevação da auto-confiança. O acesso ao serviço foi mais fácil (p<0,000) e seu uso mais regular (p<0,000) entre mulheres. Since the beginning of Physical Education entrance in the brazilin public schools, the game has been frequently used as content, and in the course of time that practice seems to be intensified. In spite of many approaches of different purposes to justify its pedagogic usefulness, the game has been used as an indiscriminate way due to the fascination that it provides to the students. The present study searches for a description and analysis of children`s (10-12 years old) attitudes behaviors in games, on Physical Education classes, inside a public school. The study was accomplished with the researcher also attending as a teacher (action research). For the accomplishment of the study 55 children were filmed in four different games, of different kinds (exposed, transformed, and spontaneous). The classes` description and analysis were focused in the attitude axis and it was defined four topics for the discussion: Conflicts, Respect of rules, Expressiveness, and Competitiveness. The relationship between the individual with the game and its culture were pointed as the main characteristics in the configuration of the ludicrous activity atmosphere. It was also possible to observe specific situations of this relationship, once the games were limited to the social games (Piaget category), in a school atmosphere where children have students roles. Due to the obtained results, the study proposes a reflexive practice in which the students notice their own attitudes and try to adapt the game to their needs and not he other way around. In this perspective, the teacher has an important mediator roll, once he will be responsible to point out the students` difficulties and promote discussions in favor to provide teamwork.

Victoria Police statistics show that, since the late 1980s, there has been a significant increase in reported rapes in that State. One interpretation of this trend is that there has been an increase in the underlying incidence of sexual violence in the community. An alternative explanation is that rape victims have become more willing to report to the police, in response to factors such as improved provision of support services to sexual assault victims, reforms to substantive and procedural law, and changes in police attitudes and procedures. In order to rest these competing interpretations data were collected and analysed on the characteristics of rapes reported to the Victoria Police in the late 1980s/early 1990s. This analysis showed that: (I) most of the additional offences reported in the early 1990s were allegations of rapes committed by family members, spouses and other intimates; and (2) an increasing number of reports related to offences which had been committed at feast one year prior to a report being made to the police. It is argued that these changing patterns are consistent with a significant increase in the reporting rate for rape. More generally, the research reported in this paper highlights the limitations of reported crime statistics as measures of the level of social violence, and points to the need for crime researchers to develop alternative methodologies for measuring and interpreting trends.

Significant pain continues to be reported by many hospitalized patients despite the numerous and varied educational programs developed and implemented to improve pain management. A theoretically based Peer Intervention Program was designed from a predictive model to address nurses' beliefs, attitudes, subjective norms, self-efficacy, perceived control and intentions in the management of pain with p.r.n. (as required) narcotic analgesia. The pilot study of this program utilized a quasi-experimental pre-post test design with a patient intervention, nurse and patient intervention and control conditions consisting of 24, 18 and 19 nurses, respectively. One week after the intervention, significant differences were found between the nurse and patient condition and the two other conditions in beliefs, self-efficacy, perceived control, positive trend in attitudes, subjective norms and intentions. The most positive aspects of the program were supportive interactive discussions with peers and an awareness and understanding of beliefs and attitudes and their roles in behavior.

A statewide cross-sectional survey was conducted in Australia to identify the determinants of registered nurses' intention to administer opioids to patients with pain. Attitudes, subjective norms and perceived control, the key determinants of the Theory of Planned Behavior, were found to independently predict nurses' intention to administer opioids to these patients. Perceived control was the strongest predictor. Nurses reported positive overall attitudes towards opioids and their use in pain management. However, many negative attitudes were identified; for example, administering the least amount of opioid and encouraging patients to have non-opioids rather than opioids for pain relief. The findings related to specific attitudes and normative pressures provide insight into registered nurses' management of pain for hospitalized patients and the direction for educational interventions to improve registered nurses' administration of opioids for pain management.

Two experiments were conducted to assess the impact of status differentials on subgroup attitudes and behaviours. In Experiment 1, 73 maths-science students were led to believe they had higher or lower status than humanities students. They then performed a non-interactive decision-making task during which they were categorized exclusively as a university student (superordinate condition), or as a university student and maths-science student simultaneously (subgroups condition). Experiment 2 (N = 98) differed from Experiment I in that perceptions of relative subgroup status were measured rather than manipulated. Consistent with social identity theory, subgroup members tended to categorize themselves more at the superordinate (university) level the lower status they considered their subgroup to be. In Experiment 2, a series of interactions also emerged, showing that status and inter-subgroup bias were positively related when the participants had been categorized exclusively at the superordinate level. When superordinate and subgroup identities were activated simultaneously, perceptions of status had no effect on levels of bias. The results were interpreted in terms of participants' needs for identity enhancement and identity distinctiveness.

Exposure to the sun by infants has been demonstrated to increase the risk of the development of melanoma and other skin cancers later in life. A cohort of 508 women who delivered healthy Caucasian babies were followed up at 1 year to determine their knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding sun protection towards themselves and their child. In addition, the 1-year-old infants were assessed by a trained nurse for the number of nevi they had on their skin. Results indicate caregivers reported a high level of sun-protection practices towards their child, with 93% of the caregivers reporting usually or always placing the child in the shade when going outside. Further, 81% of the caregivers reported usually or always placing a hat on the child, while 64% reported usually or always applying sunscreen to the child's exposed skin. Interestingly, only 61% of the caregivers reported that they stayed in the shade to reduce sun exposure and only 42% wore a hat when out in the sun. Mother's own personal sun-protection methods predicted the method of sun protection that she would most likely use for the child. While children appear to be reasonably protected from the sun, they are influenced by their mother's own behaviors.

In this paper, we present the results of a qualitative study of subordinate perceptions of leaders. The study represents a preliminary test of a model based on Affective Events Theory, which posits that leaders who are seen to be effective shape the affective events that determine employees' attitudes and behaviours in the workplace. Within this framework, we argue that effective leaders ameliorate employees' hassles by providing frequent, small emotional uplifts. The resulting positive affective states are then proposed to lead to more positive employee attitudes and behaviours, and more positive regard for the leader. Importantly, leaders who demonstrate these ameliorating behaviours are likely to require high levels of emotional intelligence, defined in terms of the ability to recognise, understand, and manage emotions in self and others. To investigate this model, we conducted interviews and focus groups with 10 leaders and 24 employees. Results confirmed that these processes do indeed exist in the workplace. In particular, leaders who were seen by employees to provide continuous small emotional uplifts were consistently held to be the most effective. Study participants were especially affected by negative events (or hassles). Leaders who failed to deal with hassles or, worse still, were the source of hassles, were consistently seen to be less effective. We conclude with a discussion of implications for practicing managers, and suggest that our exploratory findings provide justification for emotional intelligence training as a means to improve leader perceptions and effectiveness. A Educação Ambiental constitui-se na relação entre a natureza e a cultura de modo indissociável das relações de poder e de saber. A pesquisa enreda-se na tendência da Educação Ambiental complexa, analisa os modos de fabricação das subjetividades impostas pelo discurso neocapitalista, investiga a racionalidade herdada da sociedade moderna e explora a lógica dos referenciais afrodescendentes, em específico as lógicas presentes nos Terreiros da Umbanda. Problematiza o mito na Educação Ambiental e a Educação Ambiental no mito a partir das orixalidades umbandistas. Adota a pesquisa narrativa dialogando com Tristão (2012), problematiza os processos de subjetivação a partir de Foucault (1996) e busca capturar os saberes sustentáveis da noosfera umbandista (MORIN, 2005c) influenciada por Deleuze e Guattari (1996-1997). Através das Giras, seu principal ritual, evidencia como essas lógicas são acionadas para a fabricação de novos modos de percepção da relação entre a cultura e a natureza. Contribuem, no processo de investigação para a produção dos dados, a realização de entrevistas abertas e semiestruturadas, o registro em cadernos de bordo, gravações em áudio e vídeo, fotografias e rodas de conversas em encontros com professores e alunos de uma escola pública, próxima aos Terreiros, onde problematiza os processos e mecanismos de exclusão e violência materializados em posturas discriminatórias e de negação da cultura afro-brasileira e o modo como essas experiências são partilhadas pelos professores e alunos no contexto de suas práticas. A aposta metodológica consiste em criar estratégias de narrar experiências da Educação Ambiental em espaços não formais, como os espaços dos Terreiros da Umbanda, e em espaços formais, como a escola, através das orixalidades em narrativas, na busca de zonas de confiança e na invenção de encontros mais solidários, por escutas mais sutis e híbridas, e de novos sentidos de alianças que dissolvam pontos de vistas e desestabilizem discursos do eixo dominante, como forma de exercício do pensamento para abertura de lógicas silenciadas historicamente. Conclui que lógicas complexas incluem as existências infames e obscurecidas pela lógica oficial e que lógicas complexas buscam ver os efeitos dos modos como nós próprios fomos constituídos. A fé-eco-lógica presente nas orixalidades em narrativas potencializa a desconstrução dos regimes de verdade e subverte a monocultura de lógicas.

Este estudo sistematiza e aborda a temática da formação de educadores desenvolvida nas inter-relações entre universidades brasileiras e o Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, especificamente nos cursos de graduação em História na Universidade Federal da Paraíba e de Engenharia Agronômica na Universidade Federal de Sergipe, no período de 2004 a 2008. Tal processo desenvolve-se em um contexto difícil e complexo da luta pela reforma agrária no Brasil, principalmente pelas transformações ocorridas nos últimos anos oriundas da ampliação das lógicas de produção do agronegócio. Esta condição leva o MST a discutir e propor uma nova concepção de reforma agrária que a designa de popular em substituição à proposta de reforma agrária clássica. Por outro lado, apresenta uma visão das universidades brasileiras e dos projetos que são construídos e implementados nos últimos anos, inclusive, observando coincidências com as políticas econômicas gerais para a sociedade. Apresenta uma concepção de formação que vem sendo construída no interior das práticas do MST que também procura as universidades para firmar convênios e desenvolver processos de escolarização/formação de seus militantes educadores. Dentre as dimensões desse processo educativo/formativo, destacam-se: vínculo permanente com os processos orgânicos; a formação como um processo ético, estético, místico que trata das atitudes/comportamentos e como um processo dialógico, crítico e articulado que contempla saberes, experiências, em uma interação que busca superar as monoculturas. Captura por intermédio da pesquisa de campo: estranhamentos, entraves, sentidos da ocupação pedagógica e coletiva, alternativas, legados que permanecem tanto no MST como na universidade e apresenta o resultado do envolvimento e atuação dos egressos de ambos os cursos na atualidade. Aponta também para desafios, possibilidades outras de enfrentar a difícil mas necessária tarefa de formar educadores, militantes capazes de coletivamente levar adiante a luta por um mundo mais justo, solidário e democrático, em que a terra e o conhecimento, juntamente com os demais bens econômicos e culturais sejam profundamente democratizados. Pretende ser uma contribuição para o debate acerca da relevância dessas inter-relações entre universidade e movimentos sociais, em que essas experiências demarcam novas possibilidades de abertura e avanços democráticos e menos elitista da universidade e novos patamares de escolarização/formação para integrantes do Movimento dos Sem Terra.

To date few studies have been undertaken in Portugal dealing with the attitudes, motivations, and profile of tourists who visit World Heritage Sites. Also, few studies have dealt with destination image (e.g., Agapito, Mendes & Valle, 2010; Lopes, 2011). As far as it is known, none have approached the issue of gender differences in the choice of a Portuguese heritage destination. Since cultural tourism destinations need to differentiate themselves from each other, appropriate market segmentation must be based on a deep understanding of the customers’ motivations and preferences. Keeping in mind results from empirical literature (e.g., Silberberg, 1995; Beerli & Martin, 2004; Richards, 2004; Pérez, 2009; Sheng, Shen, & Chen, 2008), gender seems to be a possible approach to market segmentation, whether for Guimarães or for other cultural tourism destinations around the world. Located in the north-western region of Portugal, Guimarães is a city of strong symbolic and cultural significance, and the nomination of its historical centre as a World Heritage Site in 2001 enhanced its tourism potential. This study analyses the possible relation between gender and attitudes and motivations towards a World Heritage Site, such as Guimarães. Additionally, the empirical approach used in the study tries to capture differences in the perceived attributes of the city. Commonalities and distinctions within and between groups of tourists, by focusing on the specific characteristic of gender, were analysed. The study addressed two main questions: first, whether males and females have similar or different preferences in choosing the city as their destination; and, second, whether there are gender differences in the perception of the attributes of Guimarães. A better understanding of the gendered nature of the destination is a valuable cue for shaping products and services according to visitors’ preferences.

Given the heterogeneity of effect sizes within the population for any treatment, identifying moderators of outcomes is critical [1]. In weight management programs, there is a high individual variability in terms of weight loss and an overall modest success [2]. Some people will adopt and sustain attitudes and behaviors associated with weight loss, while others won’t [3]. To predict weight loss outcome just from the subject’s baseline information would be very valuable [4,5]. It would allow to: - Better match between treatments and individuals - Identify the participants with less probability of success (or potential dropouts) in a given treatment and direct them to alternative therapies - Target limited resources to those most likely to succeed - Increase cost-effectiveness and improve success rates of the programs Few studies have been dedicated to describe baseline predictors of treatment success. The Healthy Weight for Life (USA) study is one of the few. Its findings are now being cross-validated in Portuguese samples. This paper describes these cross-cultural comparisons.

In the past thirty years, a series of plans have been developed by successive Brazilian governments in a continuing effort to maximize the nation's resources for economic and social growth. This planning history has been quantitatively rich but qualitatively poor. The disjunction has stimulated Professor Mello e Souza to address himself to the problem of national planning and to offer some criticisms of Brazilian planning experience. Though political instability has obviously been a factor promoting discontinuity, his criticisms are aimed at the attitudes and strategic concepts which have sought to link planning to national goals and administration. He criticizes the fascination with techniques and plans to the exclusion of proper diagnosis of the socio-political reality, developing instruments to coordinate and carry out objectives, and creating an administrative structure centralized enough to make national decisions and decentralized enough to perform on the basis of those decisions. Thus, fixed, quantified objectives abound while the problem of functioning mechanisms for the coordinated, rational use of resources has been left unattended. Although his interest and criticism are focused on the process and experience of national planning, he recognized variation in the level and results of Brazilian planning. National plans have failed due to faulty conception of the function of planning. Sectorial plans, save in the sector of the petroleum industry under government responsibility, ha e not succeeded in overcoming the problems of formulation and execution thereby repeating old technical errors. Planning for the private sector has a somewhat brighter history due to the use of Grupos Executivos which has enabled the planning process to transcend the formalism and tradition-bound attitudes of the regular bureaucracy. Regional planning offers two relatively successful experiences, Sudene and the strategy of the regionally oriented autarchy. Thus, planning history in Brazil is not entirely black but a certain shade of grey. The major part of the article, however, is devoted to a descriptive analysis of the national planning experience. The plans included in this analysis are: The Works and Equipment Plan (POE); The Health, Food, Transportation and Energy Plan (Salte); The Program of Goals; The Trienal Plan of Economic and Social Development; and the Plan of Governmental Economic Action (Paeg). Using these five plans for his historical experience the author sets out a series of errors of formulation and execution by which he analyzes that experience. With respect to formulation, he speaks of a lack of elaboration of programs and projects, of coordination among diverse goals, and of provision of qualified staff and techniques. He mentions the absence of the definition of resources necessary to the financing of the plan and the inadequate quantification of sectorial and national goals due to the lack of reliable statistical information. Finally, he notes the failure to coordinate the annual budget with the multi-year plans. He sees the problems of execution as beginning in the absence of coordination between the various sectors of the public administration, the failure to develop an operative system of decentralization, the absence of any system of financial and fiscal control over execution, the difficulties imposed by the system of public accounting, and the absence of an adequate program of allocation for the liberation of resources. He ends by pointing to the failure to develop and use an integrated system of political economic tools in a mode compatible with the objective of the plans. The body of the article analyzes national planning experience in Brazil using these lists of errors as rough model of criticism. Several conclusions emerge from this analysis with regard to planning in Brazil and in developing countries, in general. Plans have generally been of little avail in Brazil because of the lack of a continuous, bureaucratized (in the Weberian sense) planning organization set in an instrumentally suitable administrative structure and based on thorough diagnoses of socio-economic conditions and problems. Plans have become the justification for planning. Planning has come to be conceived as a rational method of orienting the process of decisions through the establishment of a precise and quantified relation between means and ends. But this conception has led to a planning history rimmed with frustration, and failure, because of its rigidity in the face of flexible and changing reality. Rather, he suggests a conception of planning which understands it "as a rational process of formulating decisions about the policy, economy, and society whose only demand is that of managing the instrumentarium in a harmonious and integrated form in order to reach explicit, but not quantified ends". He calls this "planning without plans": the establishment of broad-scale tendencies through diagnosis whose implementation is carried out through an adjustable, coherent instrumentarium of political-economic tools. Administration according to a plan of multiple, integrated goals is a sound procedure if the nation's administrative machinery contains the technical development needed to control the multiple variables linked to any situation of socio-economic change. Brazil does not possess this level of refinement and any strategy of planning relevant to its problems must recognize this. The reforms which have been attempted fail to make this recognition as is true of the conception of planning informing the Brazilian experience. Therefore, unworkable plans, ill-diagnosed with little or no supportive instrumentarium or flexibility have been Brazil's legacy. This legacy seems likely to continue until the conception of planning comes to live in the reality of Brazil.

Este Projecto de Intervenção, “Aprender com os outros - uma estratégia para a inclusão de um aluno com autismo”, fundamentado nos pressupostos e nos procedimentos da investigação-acção, centrou-se nas acções em áreas de maior e menor sucesso do aluno, de nome fictício “Francisco”, no âmbito da língua portuguesa e da socialização, numa perspectiva inclusiva. Este aluno considerado com necessidades educativas especiais (NEE) apresentava perturbações do espectro do autismo (PEA), o que, à partida, se repercutia no seu défice de atenção, na autonomia para a realização das tarefas escolares, na área da linguagem e da comunicação e na interacção social. Como as interacções na turma e com a turma são essenciais para a aprendizagem, propusemo-nos implementar actividades específicas para o desenvolvimento das competências sociais e cognitivas, com abordagem comportamentalista, numa turma do 3º ano de escolaridade, onde estava incluído um aluno diagnosticado com PEA. Também procurámos desenvolver as suas competências académicas, através do trabalho realizado no grupo e com o grupo-turma, criando as condições que favorecessem a socialização do aluno e a sua autonomia. Para atingirmos aqueles objectivos, iniciámos um trabalho a pares e depois em pequenos grupos, para desta forma incluir o “Francisco” na dinâmica das aulas, para que participasse nas actividades propostas, obtendo o respeito dos colegas na valorização das suas intervenções e do seu ritmo de trabalho. Os objectivos definidos, bem como as actividades realizadas e avaliadas, implicando todos os intervenientes no processo, permitiram que o “Francisco” fizesse aprendizagens significativas nas áreas, académica, social, da autonomia e da comunicação. Segundo Silva (2009), a inclusão dos alunos considerados com necessidades educativas especiais no ensino regular implica mudanças ao nível das atitudes e das práticas pedagógicas de todos os intervenientes no processo ensino e aprendizagem, da organização e da gestão na sala de aula e na própria escola enquanto instituição. Acreditamos que só desta forma se pode proporcionar aos alunos marcados pela diferença, que é um valor em si mesma (Rodrigues, 2006; Leitão, 2006; Sanches & Teodoro, 2006; Silva, 2009), as mesmas experiências, aprendizagens e vivências que são proporcionadas aos restantes colegas.
