Rainfall samples collected in the downtown area of São Paulo city, during 2003, exhibited average concentrations of cadmium, lead and copper of 1.33, 8.52 and 49.5 nmol L-1, respectively. Among the major ions, NH4+ was the predominant species followed by NO3-, SO4(2-) and Ca2+, with volume weighed mean (VWM) concentrations of 37.1, 20.1, 11.9 and 10.8 µmol L-1, respectively. All the determined species showed high inter-events variability, including free H+ ions whose VWM concentration was 4.03 µmol L-1, corresponding to a pH value of 5.39.

The use of carbon paste electrodes (CPE) of mineral sulfides can be useful for electrochemical studies to overcome problems by using massive ones. Using CPE-chalcopyrite some variables were electrochemically evaluated. These variables were: (i) the atmosphere of preparation (air or argon) of CPE and elapsed time till its use; (ii) scan rate for voltammetric measurements and (iii) chalcopyrite concentration in the CPE. Based on cyclic voltammetry, open-circuit potential and electrochemical impedance results the recommendations are: oxygen-free atmosphere to prepare and kept the CPE until around two ours, scan rates from 10 to 40 mV s-1, and chalcopyrite concentrations > 20%.

The main goal of this research was the preparation and use of a organophilic smectitic clay able to promoting the adsorption of phenol. In this work was used a natural clay called Chocolate, from Campina Grande - PB (Brazil). The natural clay was treated with a solution of sodium carbonate. After this the sodium clay was treated with quaternary ammonium salt. The adsorptive study was conducted by different values of pH and temperature. The results showed a better performance in adsorptive at pH 7 and temperature 30 ºC, with removal of more than 80% of phenol.

The tribocorrosion behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy was investigated in a Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS) solution by a reciprocating wear, using alumina ball as the counterface material, at different normal forces and sliding velocities. Dry wear experiments were performed in order to compare with the tribocorrosion experiments at open circuit potential and under anodic polarization. Dry wear induced a superior damage on the counterface, forming larger and shallower wear tracks compared with those experiments performed in PBS solution. The anodic current was increased by wear; however the volume of oxidized metal in tribocorrosion experiments correspond to a relative low percentage of the wear track volume.

The interest in the chemistry of cobalt (II) tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (PcTsCo) comes mainly from its macrocycle-ligand structure combined with their special chemical characteristics, such as high solubility, well-defined redox reactions and remarkable optical absorption in the visible region. In this work, we use layer-by-layer technique in order to assemble CoTsPc and poly(allylaminehydrochloride) (PAH) in hybrid supramolecular system. The electronic spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry techniques were utilized to study PAH/CoTsPc multilayers growth and the cysteine catalytic oxidation. PAH/CoTsPc showed high electrochemical stability and worthwhile to mention is the remarkable influence of supramolecular arrangement on the final redox properties of the system.

Different parameters of carbon ceramic electrodes (CCE) preparation, such as type of precursor, carbon material, catalyst amount, among others, significantly influence the morphological properties and consequently their electrochemical responses. This paper describes a 2³ factorial design (2 factors and 3 levels with central point replicates), which the factors analyzed were catalyst amount (HCl 12 mol L-1), graphite/precursor ratio, and precursor type (TEOS - tetraethoxysilane and MTMOS - methyltrimetoxysilane). The design resulted in a significant third order interaction for peak current values (Ipa) and a second order interaction for potential difference (ΔE), between thefactors studied, which could not be observed when using an univariated study.

The electrochemical behavior of the interaction of amodiaquine with DNA on a carbon paste electrode was studied using voltametric techniques. In an acid medium, an electroactive adduct is formed when amodiaquine interacts with DNA. The anodic peak is dependent on pH, scan rate and the concentration of the pharmaceutical. Adduct formation is irreversible in nature, and preferentially occurs by interaction of the amodiaquine with the guanine group. Theoretical calculations for optimization of geometry, and DFT analyses and on the electrostatic potential map (EPM), were used in the investigation of adduct formation between amodiaquine and DNA.

A fluid conducting composite material prepared from graphite powder, commercial epoxy resin Araldite®, and cyclohexanone has been developed. The composition was optimized considering the mechanical properties as conductivity and adhesiveness using response surface methodology. This work employed cyclic voltammetry and amperometry to investigate the characteristics of such composite electrodes without and with the insertion of Prussian blue in the electrode body (bulk modified electrode). The composite electrodes were also successfully used for the amperometric detection of hydrogen peroxide at 0.0V vs Ag/AgCl.

The theoretical aspects of Voltammetry of Immobilized Microparticles (VIM) were discussed. The immobilization of microparticles on electrode surface, the electrode cleaning processes and the electrode materials were analyzed. The three-phase electrode model and the possible reactions between the immobilized particle and the electrolytic solution were discussed. In addition, this work discusses some selected applications of VIM published in the last years.

The present manuscript shows the synthesis of nickel hydroxide supported in carbon (Ni(OH)2/C) as a alternative material for catalytic alcohol oxidation in alkaline medium. The Ni(OH)2/C was synthesized in different percentage using a sonic bath. No current densities variation during successive cyclic voltammetry experiments was observed. The Ni(OH)2/C electrodes exhibit a potent and persistent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of different alcohols. In addition, alcohols electooxidation occurs in less positive potential compared with noble metal catalyst.

This study represents an integrated approach towards understanding the electronic and structural aspects of 2-benzylamino-1,4-naphthalenedione, a representative 2-amino-napfthoquinone. To this end, theoretical calculations performed at the B3PW91/6-31+G(d) level of density functional theory, electrochemical and X-ray structural investigation were employed. Two intramolecular H-bonds and other two intermolecular H-bonds were observed, including non-classical interactions. Cyclic voltammogram (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) show two pairs of peaks, being each one a monoelectronic process.

Lisäksi suoritettiin polystyreeni-divinyylibentseenipohjaisen polymeerin aminoalkylointi bis(ftaali-imidometyyli)eetterin avulla. Reaktio tehtiin kahdella eri katalyytillä; rikkitrioksidilla ja rautakloridilla. Aminoalkylointireaktioissa tarvittava eetteri piti ennen varsinaista reaktiota valmistaa N-hydroksymetyyliftaali-imidistä. Myös tämän reagenssin syntetisointia ftaali-imidistä kokeiltiin. Kaikki synteesit onnistuivat melko hyvin, paitsi aminoalkylointi rautakloridikatalyytillä.

A factorial design applied in a voltammetric stripping method for the measurement of Ag(I) in natural water is described. The procedure is based on the effective pre-concentration of silver ions on electrode surface. The calibration graph was linear in the silver concentration range from 7.92 x 10"7 to 1.07 x 10"5 mol L"1 with a detection limit of 3.81 x 10-7 mol L-1. The determination of Ag(I) in natural water samples was carried out satisfactory with the proposed electrode.

The degradation of vinasses in aqueous solution from ethanol industry has been investigated by electrochemical oxidation using a boron doped diamond electrode (BDD). Samples of vinasses were electrolyzed in medium of (0.1 mol L-1) Na2SO4 solutions at controlled potentials of +2.4, +3.0 and +4.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and exhibited considerable reduction of total organic carbon. The cyclic voltammetry studies indicate that the vinasses are oxidized irreversibly over the BDD at 2.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) in diffusion controlled process. From the experimental results it is clear that the BDD electrode can be a valuable tool to the electrochemical degradation of vinasses in practical applications

This paper reports the use of an electrode modified with poly(o-methoxyaniline) for detecting lithium ions. These ions are present in drugs used for treating bipolar disorder and that requires periodical monitoring of the concentration of lithium in blood serum. Poly(o-methoxyaniline) was obtained electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry on the surface of a gold electrode. The results showed that the electrode modified with a conducting polymer responded to lithium ions in the concentration range of 1 x 10-5 to 1 x 10-4 mol L-1 . The results also confirmed that the performance of the modified electrode was comparable to that of the standard method (atomic emission spectrophotometry).
