Influência de um nutracêutico no sêmen, testosterona, cortisol, eritrograma e peso corpóreo em touros jovens Bos taurus indicus

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutraceutic (Promater (R)) influence on semen, body weight, eritrogram and hormones testosterone and cortisol in Nelore young bulls. Twenty Nelore bulls were utilized, aging between 30 and 36 months, divided in group 1 (G1)= 10 (control) and group 2 (G2)= 10 (nutraceutic group - Promater (R): 20 mL/animal/day, during 70 days). Corporal weight, blood samples to eritrogram, testosterone and cortisol were obtained in days zero (D0), 35 (D35) and 70 (D70) in two groups. There was difference (P<0.01) among days collected (0, 35 and 70) with means of 424.30 kg, 480.70 kg and 502.60 kg, respectively, but there was not difference between groups. There was not difference among groups to semen, eritrogram, cortisol (G1 = 3,19 mu g/dL; G2 = 2,91 mu g/dL) and testosterone (G1 = 274,48 ng/dL; G2 = 509,65 ng/dL). The results exposed allow concluding that were not observed significative effect of the nutraceutic upon evaluated parameters: body weight, semen, hormonal profile and eritrogram.

Ultrastructural studies of the mandibular glands of the minima, media and soldier ants of Atta sexdens rubropilosa (Forel 1908)

The mandibular glands of Hymenoptera are structures associated with the mandibles and constitute part of the salivary glands system. Histological studies in workers of Atta sexdens rubropilosa revealed that this gland contains two portions: a secretory and a storage portion or reservoir. Both portions are connected by means of canaliculi. The object of the present work was the study of the ultratructure of the mandibular glands of minima, media and soldier ant of A. s. rubropilosa by TEM techniques. The glands, in the three castes studied, possess a reservoir, constituted by a simple pavementous epithelium surrounded by the cuticular intima and the secretory portion is constituted by cells of rounded shape. The secretory cells, mainly of minima and soldier, were rich in smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The media worker and soldier presented a large number of mitochondria, of varying shape. Well-developed Golgi complexes were also present in the soldiers. The secretory cells in minima, media and soldier were provided with collecting intracellular canaliculi, which were linked to the reservoir through the extracellular portion. The cytoplasm of the canaliculi-forming cell was poor in organelles. In the individuals of the three castes of A. s. rubropilosa, the presence of lipid secretion granules suggested, beyond the other functions, also a possible pheromonal action. The different roles executed by the different insect castes are directly dependent on the glandular products and, consequently, on the secretory cellular characteristics. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. A morpho-histological and ultrastructural study of the mandibular glands of Atta sexdens worker ants (Hymenoptera : Formicidae)

We describe here the morphology, histology and ultrastructure of the mandibular glands of Atta sexdens (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) worker ants. The mandibular glands consist of a reservoir with an excretory duct and a secretory portion linked to the reservoir trough canaliculi. These glands have the same morphology in the three castes studied, differing only in size, with smaller glands observed in minima workers and larger glands in soldiers.

Dentine microhardness after different methods for detection and removal of carious dentine tissue

There are several methods for identifying carious dentinal tissue aiming to avoid removal of healthy dentinal tissue. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to test different methods for the detection of carious dentinal tissue regarding the amount of carious tissue removed and the remaining dentin microhardness after caries removal. Material and methods: The dentin surfaces of 20 bovine teeth were exposed and half of the surface was protected with nail polish. Cariogenic challenge was performed by immersion in a demineralizing solution for 14 days. After transverse cross-section of the crown, the specimens were divided into four groups (n=10), according to the method used to identify and remove the carious tissue: "Papacarie", Caries-detector dye, DIAGNOdent and Tactile method. After caries removal, the cross-sectional surface was included in acrylic resin and polished. In a microhardness tester, the removed dentin thickness and the Vickers microhardness of the following regions were evaluated: remaining dentin after caries removal and superficial and deep healthy dentin. Results: ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha=0.05) were performed, except for DIAGNOdent, which did not detect the presence of caries. Results for removed dentin thickness were: "Papacarie" (424.7 +/- 105.0; a), Caries-detector dye (370.5 +/- 78.3; ab), Tactile method (322.8 +/- 51.5; bc). Results for the remaining dentin microhardness were: "Papacarie" (42.2 +/- 10.5; bc), Caries-detector dye (44.6 +/- 11.8; bc), Tactile method (24.3 +/- 9.0; d). Conclusions: DIAGNOdent did not detect the presence of carious tissue; Tactile method and "Papacarie" resulted in the least and the most dentinal thickness removal, respectively; Tactile method differed significantly from "Papacarie" and Caries-detector dye in terms of the remaining dentin microhardness, and Tactile method was the one which presented the lowest microhardness values.

Search for R-parity violating supersymmetry via the LL(E)over-bar couplings lambda(121), lambda(122) or lambda(133) in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

A search for gaugino pair production with a trilepton signature in the framework of R-parity violating supersymmetry via the couplings; lambda(121), lambda(122), or lambda(133) is presented. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of L approximate to 360 pb(-1), were collected from April 2002 to August 2004 with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 1.96 TeV. This analysis considers final states with three charged leptons with the flavor combinations eel, mu mu l, and ee tau (l = e or mu). No evidence for supersymmetry is found and limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the gaugino pair production cross section and lower bounds on the masses of the lightest neutralino and chargino are derived in two supersymmetric models. Quark condensates and high density quark matter

We consider a Coulomb gauge quark model which includes an explicit construct for a nontrivial vacuum structure in QCD. The dynamics is described by a Hamiltonain that contains a linearly rising confining potential and longitudinal and transverse Coulomb-type interactions. The Coulomb potential gives rise to ultraviolate divergences which are non-perturbatively renormalized by adding appropriate counter terms to the Hamiltonian. The equation of state for u and d quark matter at zero temperature is derived in the Hartree-Fock approximation.

Search for squarks and gluinos in events with jets and missing transverse energy using 2.1 fb(-1) of p(p)over-bar collision data at root s=1.96 TeV - D phi Collaboration

A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb(-1) collected by the D phi detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider was analyzed to search for squarks and gluinos produced in p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. No evidence for the production of such particles was observed in topologies involving jets and missing transverse energy, and 95% C.L. lower limits of 379 GeV and 308 GeV were set on the squark and gluino masses, respectively, within the framework of minimal supergravity with tan beta = 3, A(0) = 0, and mu < 0. Isolation of Rhodocyclus gelatinosus from poultry slaughterhouse wastewater

Quatro culturas de bactérias fotossintetizantes isoladas de águas residuárias de abatedouro de aves foram identificadas como Rhodocyclus gelatinosus com base nas seguintes propriedades: desenvolvimento de cor avermelhada nos cultivos em meio sintético, motilidade positiva, morfologia de bastonetes gram-negativos ligeiramente curvos, atividade de liquefação da gelatina, utilização de citrato como fonte de carbono e produção de bacterioclorofila a e carotenóides da série espiriloxantina alternativa. Esses testes foram também aplicados para uma linhagem de Rhodocyclus gelatinosus de referência para efeito de comparação. A biomassa de R. gelatinosus pode representar uma fonte de nutrientes e de pigmentos na alimentação de aves.

Articulação entre produção e logística no final do século XX e início do XXI: reflexos no estado de São Paulo

A produção tem-se mostrado cada vez mais vinculada ao sistema logístico. Com a reestruturação produtiva é possível apontar transformações no sistema produtivo como: vinculação mais acentuada entre a produção e a distribuição, nas localizações das unidades industriais, comerciais e de serviços. Tais mudanças exigiram do Estado maiores investimentos nos sistemas de transportes e de comunicações que são imprescindíveis à logística, além de optarem pela privatização ou pelas concessões de rodovias e ferrovias. Por meio dessas afirmações o artigo tem a pretensão de mostrar como ocorreu e ocorrem estes processos utilizando-se de exemplos e manifestações desses acontecimentos no Estado de São Paulo.

Comparação de modelos não-lineares para descrever o crescimento de fêmeas da raça Guzerá

Dados de crescimento e reprodução de 573 vacas da raça Guzerá, nascidas entre 1961 e 1985, na Fazenda Canoas, em Curvelo, MG, foram analisados com o objetivo de estabelecer um padrão médio de crescimento, mediante o uso de um modelo matemático que se ajuste adequadamente aos dados. Os modelos Brody, Bertalanffy, Logístico, Gompertz e Richards foram ajustados aos dados de peso/idade, coletados até 1992, e comparados quanto à qualidade de ajustamento. Os pesos assintóticos e as taxas de maturidade estimadas foram, respectivamente: para o modelo Brody, 464,49 e 0,046; para o Bertalanffy, 453,18 e 0,065; para o Logístico, 447,05 e 0,085; para o Gompertz, 449,89 e 0,075, e para o Richards, 458,26 e 0,055. O modelo Richards apresentou dificuldades computacionais para ajustamento aos dados. Os outros modelos se revelaram adequados para descrever o crescimento nesses animais, apresentando pequenas variações na qualidade de ajustamento, de acordo com os critérios utilizados. O modelo Bertalanffy foi escolhido para representar a curva média de crescimento dos animais, por apresentar um ajustamento superior no conjunto dos critérios.

Variação nos níveis de prolina, diamina e poliaminas em cultivares de trigo submetidas a déficits hídricos

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar duas cultivares de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) Anahuac e IAC-24, cultivadas em solo arenoso, sob três regimes de umidade do solo (-0,027 a -0,1 MPa; -0,027 a -0,045 MPa; e -0,027 MPa -- irrigação constante). Foram analisadas as variações nos níveis de prolina, da diamina (putrescina) e das poliaminas (espermina e espermidina) e o teor relativo de água (TRA) durante o perfilhamento, emborrachamento, floração e no enchimento dos grãos. Nas plantas submetidas a déficits hídricos foi verificada menor TRA e acúmulo de prolina e putrescina; em relação às poliaminas não foram observadas diferenças entre os tratamentos. Nos tratamentos sob déficit hídrico, a cultivar IAC-24 apresentou teores mais elevados de prolina e putrescina, o mesmo sendo verificado com a cultivar Anahuac quando submetida a tratamento sem déficit hídrico.
