A detailed microdosimetric characterization of the M. D. Anderson 42 MeV (p,Be) fast neutron beam was performed using the techniques of microdosimetry and a 1/2 inch diameter Rossi proportional counter. These measurements were performed at 5, 15, and 30 cm depths on the central axis, 3 cm inside, and 3 cm outside the field edge for 10 $\times$ 10 and 20 $\times$ 20 cm field sizes. Spectra were also measured at 5 and 15 cm depth on central axis for a 6 $\times$ 6 cm field size. Continuous slowing down approximation calculations were performed to model the nuclear processes that occur in the fast neutron beam. Irradiation of the CR-39 was performed using a tandem electrostatic accelerator for protons of 10, 6, and 3 MeV and alpha particles of 15, 10, and 7 MeV incident energy on target at angles of incidence from 0 to 85 degrees. The critical angle as well as track etch rate and normal incidence diameter versus linear energy transfer (LET) were obtained from these measurements. The bulk etch rate was also calculated from these measurements. Dose response of the material was studied, and the angular distribution of charged particles created by the fast neutron beam was measured with CR-39. The efficiency of CR-39 was calculated versus that of the Rossi chamber, and an algorithm was devised for derivation of LET spectra from the major and minor axis dimensions of the observed tracks. The CR-39 was irradiated in the same positions as the Rossi chamber, and the derived spectra were compared directly. ^

A search for direct chargino production in anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking scenarios is performed in p p collisions at root s = 7 TeV using 4.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. In these models, the lightest chargino is predicted to have a lifetime long enough to be detected in the tracking detectors of collider experiments. This analysis explores such models by searching for chargino decays that result in tracks with few associated hits in the outer region of the tracking system. The transverse-momentum spectrum of candidate tracks is found to be consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model background processes and constraints on chargino properties are obtained.

A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb(-1) of root s = 7 TeV proton-proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results.

Many extensions of the Standard Model posit the existence of heavy particles with long lifetimes. In this Letter, results are presented of a search for events containing one or more such particles, which decay at a significant distance from their production point, using a final state containing charged hadrons and an associated muon. This analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb(-1) collected in 2011 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Results are interpreted in the context of R-parity violating supersymmetric scenarios. No events in the signal region are observed and limits are set on the production cross section for pair production of supersymmetric particles, multiplied by the square of the branching fraction for a neutralino to decay to charged hadrons and a muon, based on the scenario where both of the produced supersymmetric particles give rise to neutralinos that decay in this way. However, since the search strategy is based on triggering on and reconstructing the decay products of individual long-lived particles, irrespective of the rest of the event, these limits can easily be reinterpreted in scenarios with different numbers of long-lived particles per event. The limits are presented as a function of neutralino lifetime, and for a range of squark and neutralino masses.

Aims: Patient management following elective cranial surgery varies between different neurosurgical institutions. Early routine postoperative cranial computed tomography (CT) is often performed while keeping patients sedated and ventilated for several hours. We hypothesize that fast track management without routine CT scanning, i.e., early extubation within one hour allowing neurological monitoring, is safe and does not increase the rate of return to OR compared with published data. Methods: We prospectively screened 1118 patients with cranial procedures performed at our department over a period of two years. 420 patients with elective brain surgery older than 18 years with no history of prior cranial surgery were included. Routine neurosurgical practice as it is performed at our department was not altered for this observational study. Fast track management was aimed for all cases, extubated and awake patients were further monitored. CT scanning within 48 hours after surgery was not performed except for unexpected neurological deterioration. This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01987648). Results: 420 elective craniotomies were performed for 310 supra- and 110 infratentorial lesions. 398 patients (94.8%) were able to be extubated within 1 hour, 21 (5%) within 6 hours, and 1 patient (0.2%) was extubated 9 hours after surgery. Emergency CT within 48 hours was performed for 36 patients (8.6%, 26 supra- and 10 infratentorial cases) due to unexpected neurological worsening. Of these 36 patients 5 had to return to the OR (hemorrhage in 3, swelling in 2 cases). Return to OR rate of all included cases was 1.2%. This rate compares favorably with 1-4% as quoted in the current literature. No patient returned to the OR without prior CT imaging. Of 398 patients extubated within one hour 2 (0.5%) returned to the OR. Patients who couldn’t be extubated within the first hour had a higher risk of returning to the OR (3 of 22, i.e., 14%). Overall 30-day mortality was 0.2% (1 patient). Conclusions: Early extubation and CT imaging performed only for patients with unexpected neurological worsening after elective craniotomy procedures is safe and does not increase patient mortality or the return to OR rate. With this fast track approach early postoperative cranial CT for detection of postoperative complications in the absence of an unexpected neurological finding is not justified. The International Surface Pressure Databank (ISPD) is the world's largest collection of global surface and sea-level pressure observations. It was developed by extracting observations from established international archives, through international cooperation with data recovery facilitated by the Atmospheric Circulation Reconstructions over the Earth (ACRE) initiative, and directly by contributing universities, organizations, and countries. The dataset period is currently 1768–2012 and consists of three data components: observations from land stations, marine observing systems, and tropical cyclone best track pressure reports. Version 2 of the ISPD (ISPDv2) was created to be observational input for the Twentieth Century Reanalysis Project (20CR) and contains the quality control and assimilation feedback metadata from the 20CR. Since then, it has been used for various general climate and weather studies, and an updated version 3 (ISPDv3) has been used in the ERA-20C reanalysis in connection with the European Reanalysis of Global Climate Observations project (ERA-CLIM). The focus of this paper is on the ISPDv2 and the inclusion of the 20CR feedback metadata. The Research Data Archive at the National Center for Atmospheric Research provides data collection and access for the ISPDv2, and will provide access to future versions.

Passive positioning systems produce user location information for third-party providers of positioning services. Since the tracked wireless devices do not participate in the positioning process, passive positioning can only rely on simple, measurable radio signal parameters, such as timing or power information. In this work, we provide a passive tracking system for WiFi signals with an enhanced particle filter using fine-grained power-based ranging. Our proposed particle filter provides an improved likelihood function on observation parameters and is equipped with a modified coordinated turn model to address the challenges in a passive positioning system. The anchor nodes for WiFi signal sniffing and target positioning use software defined radio techniques to extract channel state information to mitigate multipath effects. By combining the enhanced particle filter and a set of enhanced ranging methods, our system can track mobile targets with an accuracy of 1.5m for 50% and 2.3m for 90% in a complex indoor environment. Our proposed particle filter significantly outperforms the typical bootstrap particle filter, extended Kalman filter and trilateration algorithms.

Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the United States has engaged in building the infrastructure and developing the expertise necessary to protect its borders and its citizens from further attacks against its homeland. One approach has been the development of academic courses to educate individuals on the nature and dangers of subversive attacks and to prepare them to respond to attacks and other large-scale emergencies in their roles as working professionals, participating members of their communities, and collaborators with first responders. An initial review of the literature failed to reveal any university-based emergency management courses or programs with a disaster medical component, despite the public health significance and need for such programs. In the Fall of 2003, The School of Management at The University of Texas at Dallas introduced a continuing education Certificate in Emergency Management and Preparedness Program. This thesis will (1) describe the development and implementation of a new Disaster Medical Track as a component of this Certificate in Emergency Management and Preparedness Program, (2) analyze the need for and effectiveness of this Disaster Medical Track, and (3) propose improvements in the track based on this analysis. ^

Active fluorescence (fast repetition rate fluorometry, FRRF) was used to follow the photosynthetic response of the phytoplankton community during the 13-day Southern Ocean Iron RElease Experiment (SOIREE). This in situ iron enrichment was conducted in the polar waters of the Australasian-Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean in February 1999. Iron fertilisation of these high nitrate low chlorophyll (HNLC) waters resulted in an increase in the photosynthetic competence (Fv/Fm) of the resident cells from around 0.20 to greater than 0.60 (i.e. close to the theoretical maximum) by 10/11 days after the first enrichment. Although a significant iron-mediated response in Fv/Fm was detected as early as 24 h after the initial fertilisation, the increase in Fv/Fm to double ambient levels took 6 days. This response was five-fold slower than observed in iron enrichments (in situ and in vitro) in the HNLC waters of the subarctic and equatorial Pacific. Although little is known about the relationship between water temperature and Fv/Fm, it is likely that low water temperatures - and possibly the deep mixed layer - were responsible for this slow response time. During SOIREE, the photosynthetic competence of the resident phytoplankton in iron-enriched waters increased at dissolved iron levels above 0.2 nM, suggesting that iron limitation was alleviated at this concentration. Increases in Fv/Fm of cells within four algal size classes suggested that all taxa displayed a photosynthetic response to iron enrichment. Other physiological proxies of algal iron stress (such as flavodoxin levels in diatoms) exhibited different temporal trends to iron-enrichment than Fv/Fm during the time-course of SOIREE. The relationship between Fv/Fm, algal growth rate and such proxies in Southern Ocean waters is discussed.

Basalts recovered along the Reunion hotspot track on Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 115 range in age from 34 Ma at Site 706 to 64 Ma at Site 707. They have undergone various degrees of secondary alteration. Within single holes the amount of alteration can vary from a few percent to near complete replacement of phenocrysts and groundmass by secondary minerals. Olivine appears to be the most susceptible to alteration and in some sections it is the only mineral altered. In other sections, olivine, pyroxene and plagioclase phenocrysts, and groundmass have been completely replaced by secondary minerals. Clays are the predominant form of secondary mineralization. In addition to replacing olivine, pyroxene, glass, and groundmass, clays have filled veins, vesicles, and voids. Minor amounts of calcite, zeolites, and K-feldspar were also detected. The clays that filled vesicles and veins often show color zonations of dark, opaque bands near the edges that grade into tan or green transparent regions in the centers of the veins. The electron microprobe was used to obtain chemical analyses of these veins as well as to characterize isolated clays that replaced specific minerals and filled voids and vesicles.
