The surface termination of CePt5/Pt(111) is determined experimentally by LEED-IV. In accordance with recent theoretical predictions, a dense Pt terminated surface is being found. Whereas the CePt5 volume lattice comprises Pt kagome layers, additional Pt atoms occupy the associated hole positions at the surface. This finding provides a natural explanation for the remarkable inertness of the CePt5 intermetallic. Implications of the structural relaxations determined by LEED-IV analysis are discussed with regard to observations by scanning tunneling microscopy and electron spectroscopies.

The quadrupolar hyperfine interactions of in-diffused (111)In -> (111)Cd probes in polycrystalline isostructural Zr(4)Al(3) and Hf(4)Al(3) samples containing small admixtures of the phases (Zr/Hf)(3)Al(2) were investigated. A strong preference of (111)In solutes for the contaminant (Zr/Hf)(3)Al(2) minority phases was observed. Detailed calculations of the electric field gradient (EFG) at the Cd nucleus using the full-potential augmented plane wave + local orbital formalism allowed us to assign the observed EFG fractions to the various lattice sites in the (Zr/Hf)(3)Al(2) compounds and to understand the preferential site occupation of the minority phases by the (111)In atoms. The effects of the size of the supercell and relaxation around the oversized In and Cd probe atoms were investigated in detail.

We investigate the transport properties (IxV curves and zero bias transmittance) of pristine graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) as well as doped with boron and nitrogen using an approach that combines nonequilibrium Green`s functions and density functional theory (DFT) [NEGF-DFT]. Even for a pristine nanoribbon we verify a spin-filter effect under finite bias voltage when the leads have an antiparallel magnetization. The presence of the impurities at the edges of monohydrogenated zigzag GNRs changes dramatically the charge transport properties inducing a spin-polarized conductance. The IxV curves for these systems show that depending on the bias voltage the spin polarization can be inverted. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem 111: 1379-1386, 2011

By using the time-differential perturbed angular correlation technique, the electric field gradients (EFG) at (181)Hf/(181)Ta and (111)In/(111)Cd probe sites in the MoSi(2)-type compound Ti(2)Ag have been measured as a function of temperature in the range from 24 to 1073 K. Ab initio EFG calculations have been performed within the framework of density functional theory using the full-potential augmented plane wave + local orbitals method as implemented in the WIEN2k package. These calculations allowed assignments of the probe lattice sites. For Ta, a single well-defined EFG with very weak temperature dependence was established and attributed to the [4(e)4mm] Ti site. For (111)Cd probes, two of the three measured EFGs are well defined and correlated with substitutional lattice sites, i.e. both the [4(e)4mm] Ti site and the [2(a)4/mmm] Ag site.

The biological effects of chemical substitution of DNA bases triggered several investigations of their physicochemical properties This paper studies the adsorption behavior of a halogenated uracil, 5-fluorouracil (5FU). at the electrochemical interface of Au(111) and sulfuric acid solution. Upon modulation of the electric field across the interface, four distinct phases could be inferred by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) At negative potentials relative to the SCE electrode, limited by the threshold of hydrogen evolution, no molecular species could be detected by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the reconstructed Au(111)-(23 x root 3) surface, indicating that any physisorbed molecules are randomly distributed Incursion into more positive potentials increases the surface population but doer not form any two-dimensional (2D) physisorbed ordered structure Instead, we observed metastable structures that are only detectable. on surfaces with high defect density At sufficiently high positive potentials. limited by gold oxidation, the molecules are chemisorbed in a (3 x 2 root 3) ordered structure. with the aromatic ring perpendicular to the surface We report the densest chemisorbed monolayer for pyrimidine-derivative molecules (area per molecule 0 14 +/- 0 04 nm(2)). A comparison of the adsorption behavior of uracil derivatives has been made based on recent results of chemical substitution and solvent effects. We propose that pi-stacking is enhanced when halogens are incorporated in the uracil structure, in a similar fashion to what is observed in then crystal structure

Given an algorithm A for solving some mathematical problem based on the iterative solution of simpler subproblems, an outer trust-region (OTR) modification of A is the result of adding a trust-region constraint to each subproblem. The trust-region size is adaptively updated according to the behavior of crucial variables. The new subproblems should not be more complex than the original ones, and the convergence properties of the OTR algorithm should be the same as those of Algorithm A. In the present work, the OTR approach is exploited in connection with the ""greediness phenomenon"" of nonlinear programming. Convergence results for an OTR version of an augmented Lagrangian method for nonconvex constrained optimization are proved, and numerical experiments are presented.

Two Augmented Lagrangian algorithms for solving KKT systems are introduced. The algorithms differ in the way in which penalty parameters are updated. Possibly infeasible accumulation points are characterized. It is proved that feasible limit points that satisfy the Constant Positive Linear Dependence constraint qualification are KKT solutions. Boundedness of the penalty parameters is proved under suitable assumptions. Numerical experiments are presented.

Multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASSCF//CASPT2) and quadruple-zeta ANO-RCC basis sets were employed to investigate the ground and low-lying electronic states of MoB and MoB(+). Spectroscopic constants, potential energy curves, wavefunctions, Mulliken population analyses, and ionization energies are given. The ground state of MoB is of X(6)Pi symmetry (R(e) = 1.968 angstrom, omega(e) = 664 cm(-1), and mu = 2.7 D), giving rise to a Omega = 7/2 ground state after including spin-orbit coupling. For MoB(+), the ground state is computed to be of X(7)Sigma(+) symmetry (R(e) = 2.224 angstrom, omega(e) = 141 cm(-1), and mu = 1.2 D), with an adiabatic ionization energy of 7.19 eV and a vertical one of 7.53 eV. The electronic structure and chemical bonding of the ground and low-lying Lambda - S and Omega states of Ta(2) were investigated at the multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory (CASSCF//CASPT2) level. The ground state of Ta(2) is computed to be a X(3)Sigma(-)(g) state (R(e) = 2.120 angstrom, omega(e) = 323 cm(-1), and D(e) = 4.65 eV), with two low-lying singlet states close to it (a(1) Sigma(+)(g) : T(e) = 409 cm(-1), R(e) = 2.131 angstrom, and omega(e) = 313 cm(-1); b(1) Gamma(g): T(e) = 1, 038 cm(-1), R(e) = 2.127 angstrom, and omega(e) = 316 cm(-1)). These electronic states are derived from the same electronic configuration: vertical bar 13 sigma(2)(g)14 sigma(2)(g)7 delta(2)(g)13 pi(4)(u)>. The effective bond order of the X(3) Sigma(-)(g) state is 4.52, which indicates that the Ta atoms are bound by a quintuple chemical bond. The a(1) Sigma(+)(g) state interacts strongly with the X(3)Sigma(-)(g) g ground state by a second-order spin-orbit interaction, giving rise to the (1)0(g)(+) (ground state) (dominated by the X(3)Sigma(-)(g) Lambda - S ground state) and (9)0(g)(+) (dominated by the a(1) Sigma(+)(g) Lambda - S state) Omega states. These results are in line with those reported for the group 5B homonuclear transition metal diatomics. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem 111: 1306-1315, 2011

The mechanism and the energy profile of the gas-phase reaction that mimics esterification under acidic conditions have been investigated at different levels of theory. These reactions are known to proceed with rate constants close to the collision limit in the gas-phase and questions have been raised as to whether the typical addition-elimination mechanism via a tetrahedral intermediate can explain the ease of these processes. Because these reactions are common to many organic and biochemical processes it is important to understand the intrinsic reactivity of these systems. Our calculations at different levels of theory reveal that a stepwise mechanism via a tetrahedral species is characterized by energy barriers that are inconsistent with the experimental results. For the thermoneutral exchange between protonated acetic acid and water and the exothermic reaction of protonated acetic acid and methanol our calculations show that these reactions proceed initially by a proton shuttle between the carbonyl oxygen and the hydroxy oxygen of acetic acid mediated by water, or methanol, followed by displacement at the acylium ion center. These findings suggest that the reactions in the gas-phase should be viewed as an acylium ion transfer reaction. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem 111: 1596-1606, 2011

In order to evaluate the interactions between Au/Cu atoms and clean Si(l 11) surface, we used synchrotron radiation grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence analysis and theoretical calculations. Optimized geometries and energies on different adsorption sites indicate that the binding energies at different adsorption sites are high, suggesting a strong interaction between metal atom and silicon surface. The Au atom showed higher interaction than Cu atom. The theoretical and experimental data showed good agreement. Crown Copyright (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Accurate potential energy curves, dipole moment functions, dissociation energies, and molecular constants for several low-lying singlet and triplet electronic states of BeS were investigated using the CASSCF/MRCI methodology, and the cc-pV5Z basis set for beryllium, and the aug-cc-pV(5+d) Z set for sulfur. Besides presenting improved results for the three lowest lying states, this study presents the first theoretical characterization of another set of nine excited states so far unknown experimentally. Our results are sufficiently accurate to reliably guide the experimental search and characterization of these states, and also to confirm the experimental assignment of the B(1)Sigma(+) excited state. In this paper, I explore recreational mathematics from two perspectives. I first study how the concept appears in educational policy documents such as standards, syllabi, and curricula from a selection of countries to see if and in what way recreational mathematics can play a part in school mathematics. I find that recreational mathematics can be a central part, as in the case of India, but also completely invisible, as in the standards from USA. In the second part of the report, I take an educational historical approach. I observe that throughout history, recreational mathematics has been an important tool for learning mathematics. Recreational mathematics is then both a way of bringing pleasure and a tool for learning mathematics. Can it also be a tool for social empowerment?

This paper deals with younger students’ (grade 2 and 5) conceptions about mathematics and mathematics education. The questionnaire consisted of three parts: (1) statements with a Likert-scale; (2) open-end questions where the students could explain further their conceptions; and, (3) a request to draw a picture of yourself doing mathematics. The results from the statements were summarised and the pictures were analysed. Most students in grade 2 had a positive attitude towards mathematics whereas a larger proportion in grade 5 gave negative answers. All students presented mathematics as an individual activity with a focus on the textbook. The elder students narrow the activity down to calculating. A post-questionnaire confirmed the results.
