Blend films (free-standing) containing 20% in volume of polyaniline (PANI) in 80% of natural rubber (NR) were fabricated by casting in three different ways: (1) adding PANI-EB (emeraldine base) dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to the latex (NRL), (2) adding PANI-EB dissolved in in-cresol to NR dissolved in xylol (NRD), (3) overlaying the surface of a pure NR cast film with a PANI layer grown by in situ polymerization (NRO). All the films were immersed into HCl solution to achieve the primary doping (protonation) of PANI before the characterization. The main goal here was to investigate the elastomeric and electrical conductivity properties for each blend, which may be applied as pressure and deformation sensors in the future. The characterization was carried out by optical microscopy, dc conductivity, vibrational spectroscopy (infrared absorption and Raman scattering), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and tensile stress-strain curves. The results suggest that the NRL blend is the most suitable in terms of mechanical and electrical properties required for applications in pressure and deformation sensors: a gain of conductivity without losing the elastomeric property of the rubber. Blend films of poly (o-ethoxyaniline) (POEA) and collagen were fabricated by casting under optimized conditions and characterized by Raman scattering and UV-vis absorption spectroscopies. The UV-vis spectra showed that the addition of collagen in the aqueous solution of POEA promotes a dedoping of the POEA. This effect was also observed for the blend films as supported by Raman scattering and a mechanism for the chemical interaction between POEA-collagen is proposed. The influences of different percentage of collagen as well as the pH of stock solutions during the fabrication process of the blend films were also investigated. It was found that the preparation method plays an important role in the flexibility and freestanding properties of the films. Complementary, the surface morphology was studied by atomic force microscopy and the conductivity by dc measurements. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from a ruthenium complex mer-[RuCl3 (dppb)(4-Mepy)] (dppb = PPh2 (CH2)(4)-PPh2; 4-Mepy = 4-methylpyridine), termed Ru-Pic, display a distinct color, which is different from the coloration exhibited by cast films or chloroform solutions. The solution and cast films are red, while the LB films are green-bluish. The manifestation of the blue color in the LB film finds its explanation in a unique absorption band at 690 nm, which is associated with the oxidation of the phosphine moieties. Fluorescence emission and absorption-reflection infrared spectroscopy measurements revealed the molecular organization in the LB films. In contrast, cast films showed a random distribution of complexes. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering was also used in an attempt to identify the main interactions in Ru-Pic.

A PPV derivative, poly(2-methoxy,5-(n-octadecyl)-p-phenylenevinylene) (OC1OC18-PPV), has been synthesized via the Gilch route and used to fabricate Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. True monomolecular films were formed at the air/water interface, which were successfully transferred onto different types of substrate. Using UV-visible absorption, FTIR, fluorescence and Raman scattering spectroscopies we observed that the polymer molecules were randomly distributed in the LB film, with no detectable anisotropy. This is in contrast to the anisotropic LB films of a previously reported PPV derivative, poly(2-methoxy-5-n-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene (OC1OC6-PPV), which is surprising because the longer chain of OC1OC18-PPV investigated here was expected to lead to more ordered films. As a consequence of the lack of order, LB films of OC1OC18-PPV exhibit lower photoconductivity and require higher operating voltage in a polymer light-emitting diode (PLED) in comparison with LB films of OC1OC6-PPV. This result confirms the importance of molecular organization in the LB film to obtain efficient PLEDs. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The synthesis of a poly(azo)urethane by fixing CO2 in bis-epoxide followed by a polymerization reaction with an azodiamine is presented. Since isocyanate is not used in the process, it is termed clean method and the polymers obtained are named NIPUs (non-isocyanate polyurethanes). Langmuir films were formed at the air-water interface and were characterized by surface pressure vs mean molecular area per met unit (Pi-A) isotherms. The Langmuir monolayers were further studied by running stability tests and cycles of compression/expansion (possible hysteresis) and by varying the compression speed of the monolayer formation, the subphase temperature, and the solvents used to prepare the spreading polymer solutions. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique was used to fabricate ultrathin films of a particular polymer (PAzoU). It is possible to grow homogeneous LB films of up to 15 layers as monitored using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Higher number of layers can be deposited when PAzoU is mixed with stearic acid, producing mixed LB films. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopy and Raman scattering showed that the materials do not interact chemically in the mixed LB films. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) and micro-Raman technique (optical microscopy coupled to Raman spectrograph) revealed that mixed LB films present a phase separation distinguishable at micrometer or nanometer scale. Finally, mixed and neat LB films were successfully characterized using impedance spectroscopy at different temperatures, a property that may lead to future application as temperature sensors. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to correlate the data.

An archeological artifact can be seen as a chronological element, which helps to determine the age of certain society and to understand the thinking, values and the way of life of this society. Thus, the classification of archeological artifacts is one of the approaches used to study the cultural system of antique societies trying to reconstruct their history. The "Centro de Museologia, Antropologia e Argueologia (CEMAARQ)" of the "Unesp Univ Estadual Paulista" in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo state, Brazil, develops projects within this context (identification and preservation). This is the case of the archeological site named "Lagoa São Paulo-02" discovered in 1993 at the margins of the Parana river in the region of Presidente Epitacio city, São Paulo state, Brazil. This site has ceramic fragments of different shapes and sizes that have a strong influence of traces of the Guarani culture, which is one of the Brazilian native populations. These samples were basically characterized via micro-Raman scattering and Fourier transform infrared absorption (FTIR) spectroscopies. The main objective was to identify the pigments used in the manufacture of the ceramic artifacts and to analyze the composition of the ceramic body to understand how the artifacts were made. Three pigments were found: red, black and white. For the red pigment were identified characteristic bands of hematite, an iron oxide found in the red rocks of the river banks that were eroded by water. The black pigment, probably, is due to the use of vegetal charcoal, which is found in nature as the product of burning organic material such as wood. For the white pigment, the FTIR spectra suggested the use of kaolin, either in the ceramic body or in the proper white pigment, due to the presence of the characteristic bands of the kaolinite. Complementary, the additives applied as anti-plastics were identified as charcoal and quartz, being the latter found in the rocks present in the archeological site. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In this work we study the spectrum (bulk and surface modes) of exciton-polaritons in infinite and semi-infinite binary superlattices (such as, ···ABABA···), where the semiconductor medium (A), whose dielectric function depends on the frequency and the wavevector, alternating with a standard dielectric medium B. Here the medium A will be modeled by a nitride III-V semiconductor whose main characteristic is a wide-direct energy gap Eg. In particular, we consider the numerical values of gallium nitride (GaN) with a crystal structure wurtzite type. The transfer-matrix formalism is used to find the exciton-polariton dispersion relation. The results are obtained for both s (TE mode: transverse electric) and p (TM mode: transverse magnetic) polarizations, using three diferent kind of additional boundary conditions (ABC1, 2 e 3) besides the standard Maxwell's boundary conditions. Moreover, we investigate the behavior of the exciton-polariton modes for diferent ratios of the thickness of the two alternating materials forming the superlattice. The spectrums shows a confinement of the exciton-polariton modes due to the geometry of the superlattice. The method of Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) and Raman scattering are the most adequate for probing this excitations

intense photoluminescence in the visible region was observed at room temperature in standard soda-lime-silica glass powder, mechanically milled in a high-energy attrition mill. The emission band maximum shows an interesting dependence on the exciting wavelength, suggesting the possibility to tune the PL emission. These findings indicate that the photoluminescence may be directly related to unsatisfied chemical bonds correlated with the high surface area. The Raman scattering and ultraviolet-visible optical reflectance measurements corroborate this assertion. Transmission electron microscopy measurements indicate that samples milled more than 10 h present the formation of nanocrystallites with about 10-20 nm. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) on the corrosion of copper in ethanol-water mixture with 0.01 mol dm(-3) HClO4 was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry and surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy. The linear sweep voltammetry for the copper electrode in the presence of MBT shows one anodic process associated with the oxidation of MBT, which leads to the formation of a film on the electrode. This film inhibits the anodic copper dissolution and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction. SERS studies indicated that MBT oxidizes and forms polymeric complexes involving copper ions and the ionized form of thiol. (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V. Ltd.

Barium zirconium titanate (BZT) ceramics were prepared by mixed oxide method. X-ray diffraction showed the presence of a single phase while Raman scattering confirmed structural transitions as a function of different Zr/Ti ratio. The addition of Zr strongly influenced the crystal structure and electrical properties of the ceramics. A typical hysteresis loops were observed for all investigated compositions. BZT ceramics with 15 mol% Zr have shown a ferroelectric to paraelectric transition at around 77 degrees C. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.
