20-km distributed temperature sensor based on spontaneous Brillouin scattering

We report on a novel experimental setup for distributed measurement of temperature, based on spontaneous Brillouin scattering in optical fiber. We have developed a mode-locked Brillouin fiber ring laser in order to generate the dual frequency source required for a heterodyne detection of the backscattered signal. This relatively simple system enables temperature measurements over 20 km with a spatial resolution of 7 m.

In-fibre twist sensor based on TFBG structures

We report a novel in-fibre twist sensor utilising strong polarisation dependent coupling behaviour of fiber Bragg grating with 81° tilted structure. The demonstrated twist sensor has shown high torsion sensitivity and capability of direction recognition.

1220km propagation of 40Gbit/s single channel RZ data over dispersion managed standard (non-dispersion shifted) fibre

Error free propagation of a single polarisation optical time division multiplexed 40 Gbit/s dispersion managed pulsed data stream over dispersion (non-shifted) fibre. This distance is twice the previous record at this data rate.

DNA hybridisation biosensor based on dual-peak long-period grating

Using an optical biosensor based on dual-peak long-period fibre grating, we demonstrate the detection of interactions between DNA biomolecules in real-time, showing a high sensitivity and reusability function.

Single polarisation fibre ring laser by utilising intracavity 45° tilted fibre Bragg grating

Single polarisation operation of fibre ring laser has been realised by employing an intracavity 45°-tilted fibre Bragg grating (45°-TFBG). The degree of polarisation upto 99.94% of the laser was demonstrated with good stability.

16,000 km, 10 Gbits-1 soliton transmission over standard fibre by reduction of interactions through optimum amplifier positioning

We show that by optimizing the amplifier position in a two-stage dispersion map, the (dispersion-managed) soliton-soliton interaction can be reduced, enabling transmission of 10-Gbits-1 solitons over standard fiber over 16,000 km

Adaptive pulse shaping through BER Feedback

We propose a simplified approach to optical signal pre-distortion based on adaptive pulse shaping through unconventional use of a MZ modulator. The scheme allows natural tailoring of transmitted pulses by optimising the received pulse.

Mitigation of patterning effects at 40 Gb/s by skewed channel pre-encoding

Through modelling of direct error computation, a reduction of pattern- dependent errors in a standard fiber-based transmission link at 40 Gb/s rate is demonstrated by application of a skewed data pre-encoding. The trade-off between the bit-error rate improvement and the data rate loss is examined.

Dispersion-managed solitons: a new paradigm for high data rate

The WDM properties of dispersion managed (DM) solitons and the reduction in Gordon-Haus jitter means that it is possible to contemplate multiple channels each at 10 Gbit/s for transoceanic distances without the need for elaborate soliton control. This paper will concentrate on fundamental principles of DM solitons, but will use these principles to indicate optimum maps for future high-speed soliton systems.

High extinction ratio in-fibre polarizer based on a 45º titled fibre Bragg grating

We report an in-fiber polarizer implemented using a 45° tilted FBG. Polarization extinction ratio of 28dB at 1550nm and HMFW over 80nm has been demonstrated. When the un-polarized light passes this device, 99.5% of degree of polarization can be achieved.

Enhanced dispersion tolerance of coherent offset-QAM OFDM over conventional OFDM

We experimentally demonstrate 38-Gbit/s offset-16QAM OFDM over 840km without guard interval, and numerically show that 112-Gbit/s PDM offset-QPSK OFDM achieves 23% increase in net capacity over conventional OFDM under the same transmission reach. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

Experimental demonstration of data-dependent pilot-aided phase noise estimation for CO-OFDM

We demonstrate a novel phase noise estimation scheme for CO-OFDM, in which pilot subcarriers are deliberately correlated to the data subcarriers. This technique reduces the overhead by a factor of 2. © OSA 2014.

Duty cycle optimization in a wavelength allocated WDM transmission with narrow asymmetric VSB filtering

Photosensitivity mechanism of undoped poly(methyl methacrylate) under UV radiation at 325 nm and its spatial resolution limit

In this Letter, we provide evidence suggesting that the main photosensitive mechanism of an undoped poly(methyl methacrylate)-based microstructured optical fiber under UV radiation at 325 nm is a competitive process of both photodegradation and polymerization. We found experimentally that increasing strain during photo-inscription leads to an increased photosensitivity, which is evidence of photodegradation. Likewise, refractive index change in the fiber was measured to be positive, which provides evidence for further polymerization of the material. Finally, we relate the data obtained to the spatial recording resolution of the samples. © 2014 Optical Society of America.
