Survey of the properties of the master cartons (corrugated fibreboard boxes) used in frozen shrimp industry

Master cartons for fishery products collected from different prawn freezing factories were evaluated for bursting strength, puncture resistance, waterproofness, combined weight of liners, basis weight of the corrugating medium, weight of the carton, dimensions of the carton, wax content and saponifiable matter and discussed in the light of the ISI standards.

Effect of frozen storage on the physical properties of corrugated fibre-board master cartons and waxed duplex cartons

Deteriorative changes in physical properties of corrugated fibre-board master cartons and waxed duplex cartons during frozen storage under commercial conditions were studied. Such changes due to prolonged exposure of these boards to moisture in the laboratory, effect of repeated wax-coating on the water resisting capacity of the boards and protection provided by increasing wax contents in the boards against water absorption and consequent deterioration in physical properties are reported.

Copepods of the genus Hermilius (Caligidae) parasitic on marine catfish of Kuwait, with a key to the species of Hermilius

Three species of caligid copepods (Siphonostomatoida) belonging to genus Hermilius Heller, 1865 were recovered from the giant marine catfish, Arius thalassinus Ruppell, taken from the Persian Gulf. They are H. pyriventris Heller, 1865; H. longicaudus n. sp.; and H. longicornis Bassett-Smith, 1898. H helleri Pillai, 1963 is proposed to be relegated to the synonym of H pyriventris. Socio-economic Monitoring (SocMon) is an approach and set of tools for conducting socio-economic monitoring of changes in coastal communities. Key considerations included: importance of local partnerships; government and civil society partnerships; emphasis of adapting SocMon to local needs and priorities; capacity building; engaging with local stakeholders; inter and intra-regional collaboration; importance of language; and importance of language.

Building damage and repair due to leakage in a deep excavation

The north-south line in Amsterdam is being built underneath the historic centre of the city. Three deep stations are being constructed in deep excavations supported by diaphragm walls. During the excavation for Vijzelgracht station, leakage through the wall resulted in large settlements and damage to historic buildings, which threatened continuation of the project. The authors analysed the cause of the leakage and the damage to the buildings. With the application of robust preventative measures at two of the deep excavations it was possible to continue the project. This paper reports on the cause of the events, the damage to the buildings and the counter-measures taken. It includes lessons learned for the project and for the foundations industry.
