ABSTRACT. The current scheme that exists in the field of standardization and the design of new video coding standards is becoming a difficult task to meet the evolving and dynamic community of video encoding. The problem was centered mainly in order to exploit all the features and similarities between different codecs and encoding standards. This has forced redesigning some parts common to several coding standards. This problem led to the emergence of a new initiative for standardization within the ISO / IEC MPEG committee, called Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC). His main idea was to develop a video coding standard and gradually incrementase to update a library of components, providing flexibility and the ability to have a reconfigurable code using a new flow -oriented language Actors / data called CAL. This language is used for the specification of the standard library and to the instantiation model decoder. Later, a new video coding standard called High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), which currently is in continuous process of updating and development, which would improve the compression efficiency and video coding is developed. Obviously has developed a vision of using the methodology HEVC RVC. In this PFC, different implementations using RVC standard are used. For example, using decoders MPEG 4 Part 2 SP and MPEG 4 Part 10 CBP and PHP and the new coding standard HEVC, highlighting the features and usefulness of each. In RVC, the algorithms are described by a class of actors that exchange streams of data (tokens) to perform different actions. The objective of this project is to develop a program that, based on the aforementioned decoders, a series of video stream in different compression formats and a standard distribution of actors (for each of the decoders), is capable of generating different distributions decoder actors on one or more processors of the system on which it runs, to achieve greater efficiency in video coding. The purpose of the program developed in this project is to facilitate the realization of the distributions of the actors on the cores of the system, and get the best possible settings automatically and efficiently.

Upper limb function impairment is one of the most common sequelae of central nervous system injury, especially in stroke patients and when spinal cord injury produces tetraplegia. Conventional assessment methods cannot provide objective evaluation of patient performance and the tiveness of therapies. The most common assessment tools are based on rating scales, which are inefficient when measuring small changes and can yield subjective bias. In this study, we designed an inertial sensor-based monitoring system composed of five sensors to measure and analyze the complex movements of the upper limbs, which are common in activities of daily living. We developed a kinematic model with nine degrees of freedom to analyze upper limb and head movements in three dimensions. This system was then validated using a commercial optoelectronic system. These findings suggest that an inertial sensor-based motion tracking system can be used in patients who have upper limb impairment through data integration with a virtual reality-based neuroretation system.

The risks associated with gestational diabetes (GD) can be reduced with an active treatment able to improve glycemic control. Advances in mobile health can provide new patient-centric models for GD to create personalized health care services, increase patient independence and improve patients’ self-management capabilities, and potentially improve their treatment compliance. In these models, decision-support functions play an essential role. The telemedicine system MobiGuide provides personalized medical decision support for GD patients that is based on computerized clinical guidelines and adapted to a mobile environment. The patient’s access to the system is supported by a smartphone-based application that enhances the efficiency and ease of use of the system. We formalized the GD guideline into a computer-interpretable guideline (CIG). We identified several workflows that provide decision-support functionalities to patients and 4 types of personalized advice to be delivered through a mobile application at home, which is a preliminary step to providing decision-support tools in a telemedicine system: (1) therapy, to help patients to comply with medical prescriptions; (2) monitoring, to help patients to comply with monitoring instructions; (3) clinical assessment, to inform patients about their health conditions; and (4) upcoming events, to deal with patients’ personal context or special events. The whole process to specify patient-oriented decision support functionalities ensures that it is based on the knowledge contained in the GD clinical guideline and thus follows evidence-based recommendations but at the same time is patient-oriented, which could enhance clinical outcomes and patients’ acceptance of the whole system.

ABSTRACT One of the climate change mitigation proposals suggested by the IPCC (Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change) in its ‘Synthesis Report 2007’ involves the launch of actions for capturing and storing carbon dioxide, existing three different geological structures suitable for gas storage: oil and gas reservoirs already drained, useless coal layers and deep saline structures. In case of deep saline structures, the main problem to develop a study of CO2 storage is the difficulty of obtaining geological data for some selected structure with characteristics that could be suitable for injection and gas storage. According to this situation, the solution to analyze the feasibility of a storage project in a geological structure will need numerical simulation from a 3D model. Numerical methods allow the simulation of the carbon dioxide filling in saline structures from a well, used to inject gas with a particular flow. In this document a simulation methodology has been defined for geological CO2 storage, as a contribution to solve the Climatic Change problem, applied to the structure BG-GE-08 (west of Murcia region). This geological structure has been classified by the IGME (Geological and Mining Institute of Spain) as suitable for the storage of carbon dioxide given the existence of a storage layer confined between two seal layers.

When applying computational mathematics in practical applications, even though one may be dealing with a problem that can be solved algorithmically, and even though one has good algorithms to approach the solution, it can happen, and often it is the case, that the problem has to be reformulated and analyzed from a different computational point of view. This is the case of the development of approximate algorithms. This paper frames in the research area of approximate algebraic geometry and commutative algebra and, more precisely, on the problem of the approximate parametrization.

We discuss three geometric constructions and their relations, namely the offset, the conchoid and the pedal construction. The offset surface F d of a given surface F is the set of points at fixed normal distance d of F. The conchoid surface G d of a given surface G is obtained by increasing the radius function by d with respect to a given reference point O. There is a nice relation between offsets and conchoids: The pedal surfaces of a family of offset surfaces are a family of conchoid surfaces. Since this relation is birational, a family of rational offset surfaces corresponds to a family of rational conchoid surfaces and vice versa. We present theoretical principles of this mapping and apply it to ruled surfaces and quadrics. Since these surfaces have rational offsets and conchoids, their pedal and inverse pedal surfaces are new classes of rational conchoid surfaces and rational offset surfaces.

This project analyzes the viability of Villameriel geological structure, which is situated in Palencia, Spain. There will be two measures to probe it. The first will be to calculate how much amount of CO2 can be stored in this structure, and second will be to see how the CO2 behaves inside the first 100 years. In order to obtain the answers from these questions, Schlumberger programs are used specifically PETREL and ECLIPSE300. This programs work with numerical methods and they simulate a static model and a dynamic model. Static model is created in order to build a geological model with the same properties than in the real life. Dynamic model works to obtain the maximum amount of CO2 that it can be introduced inside storage formation and to know how CO2 will move inside the first 100 years. At the end, an economic study will be done with the objective to know if it would cost money, if there would be profits or no.
