The excess of salts in the soil can directly affect the development and yield of the plants, therefore, studies on water relationships of crops in such conditions are necessary to prevent or solve the problem. The study was conducted in a greenhouse at Universidade Estadual Paulista, Department of Agricultural Engineering, Botucatu, Brazil. The statistical design used was randomized blocks with four replications, consisting of five levels of soil salinity (1.0, 3.0, 6.0, 9.0, 12.0 dS m-1), two cultivars of sugar beet (Early Wonder and Itapuã) and two types of management of fertigation, totaling in all 80 plots. Measurements of water content of the leaves, diffuse resistance to water vapor, transpiration, leaf area and the water consumption of crop were determined. There was a decrease according to increasing salinity for the analysed physiological parameters in the Early Wonder variety while for the Itapuã variety a gradual increase was observed up to a salinity of 6 dS m-1. The water consumption by plants showed a reduction with increase of soil salinity for the two varieties.

In Brazil, common bean is in one of the most representative economic crops, not only because of its growing area but also because of the economic value of its production. In the crop year 2006/07, in Selvíria (MS), we analyzed the common bean yield as a function of some physical attributes of a Typic Acrustox in minimum tillage and center pivot irrigation system. The aim of this work was to evaluate among the soil physical attributes, under minimum tillage, those that better explain the variability of bean yield using the Pearson and spatial correlations,. A geostatistical grid was installed to collect data from soil and plants, with 117 sampling points in an area of 2025 m² and homogeneous slope of 0.055 m m-1. The results showed a low yield of bean, which occurred probably due to a lower density of plants that the system provided. Thus, for the minimum tillage system, the bean yield could be explained as a function of total porosity and bulk density.

The analysis of the uptake of nutrients is important for understanding the nutritional requirements of a cultivar during its development and identifies periods of increased demand, which allows scheduling fertigation. Nevertheless, the information is limited for gerbera. Thus, the present study was conducted to determine the uptake of potted gerbera cultivars Cherry and Red conducted in substrate in a crop cycle in the period August-October 2008. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse in a randomized block split plot with four replications. The plots were composed by cultivars and subplots by dates of collection. During the development of the plants, the content and accumulation of macro and micronutrients was assessed in plant tissue of the shoots. The macronutrients were accumulated in the following order: K>N>Ca>Mg>P>S (524, 334, 119, 47, 42, 21 mg plant-1). The micronutrients were accumulated in the following order: Fe>Mn>B>Zn>Cu (7897, 1505, 801, 384,63 µg plant-1). The reproductive was the period of greatest uptake of nutrients, except for Fe.

In Brazil, phosphorus availability is one factor that that more limit yield of upland rice under rainfed system. Then, better understanding of cultivars development at phosphorus soil fertilization is very important in the production systems making this more sustainable. The objective was to evaluate the influence of phosphorus doses applied to the soil over the root length, root and shoot dry matter, concentration and content of macronutrient and zinc in shoot and root as well as the efficiency of nutrient uptake per meter root of upland cultivars of intermediate and modern groups. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse conditions in a completely randomized design in factorial scheme 4 x 4. Treatments were four levels of P fertilization applied at the soil (0, 50, 100 and 200 mg dm(-3) of P) and four upland rice cultivars (Maravilha - modern group, IAC-201, IAC-202 and Carajas - intermediate group). There is increase in phosphorus availability in the soil with increasing levels of P fertilization. Under low phosphorus availability, cultivars of the intermediate group have better shoots and root system development in relation to the modern cultivar group. Level of phosphorus affected nutrients contents in shoots and root system of upland rice cultivars. The increasing phosphorus fertilization increased uptake of nutrients per meter of root; and although under higher phosphorus availability there was a greater root growth, in low phosphorus availability root growth was greater at the expense of shoot growth.

The periodic substitution of cotton cultivars for the farms can modify the levels of economic damages and control of pests, compromising the success in pest control. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of simulated defoliation levels in cotton cultivars actually used. The assay was carried out in experimental area of the Polo Apta Centro Norte, in Pindorama, Sao Paulo state. There were evaluated four defoliations levels (0%, 36.8%, 62.1% e 100%), done at a unique operation, in tree times (30, 60 and 90 days after plant emergence) and four cotton cultivars (IAC-25, DeltaOpal, Fibermax 966 and Fibermax 993). The defoliation was done with a scissor simulating the caterpillar damage. Evaluations included the number of open bolls, weight of one boll and 100 seeds, fiber percentage and productivity (kg ha(-1)). The defoliation negatively affected all components of agronomic traits, with the exception of percentage of fiber. The most damaging levels were 62.1 and 100% removal of the leaf blade. The period of higher susceptibility to defoliation occurs from 30 to 60 days after plant emergence.

The objective was to evaluate the genetic diversity of cultivars in sugar cane for resistance to D. saccharalis. The experiment was carried out in the laboratory in completely randomized design with 11 treatments (one control and 10 treatments) in ten replications. The replications were made from artificial diets (food and refood) made with dry steam crushed from sugar cane cultivars stems, except for one of them considered standard diet. The cultivars used were: RB867515, RB855453, RB855536, CTC 15, CTC 9, SP80-1842, SP79-1011, SP89-1115, SP81-3250 and SP87-365. In the evaluation biological characteristics of the insect considered were: larval development (days), larval viability (%), pupal development (days), pupal weight (g), pupal viability (%), period of hatched larvae to adults emergence (days), total viability (%) and adults longevity without food (days). The generalized Mahalanobis distance (D-2) for the cluster analysis by the method of average linkage between groups (UPGMA) and Tocher's method optimization was determined. Four and five groups were formed, respectively, by the method of average linkage between groups (UPGMA) and Tocher's method optimization. We concluded that the cultivar CTC 15 standed out as highly susceptible to D. saccharalis, while the cultivar SP87-365 behaved as moderately resistant by antibiosis to D. saccharalis.

The aim of this work was to study the physiological responses of three contrasting cultivars of sugar cane subject to water stress and rewatering, The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, where the cultivars SP83-2847, SP80-1842 and SP81-3250 were grown in pots. The first assessment was done after 85 days of planting, then two treatments were implemented, i.e. without water stress (-D) and with water stress (+D) by withholding water for 15 days and rewatering imposed for 12 days after the stress period. Cultivars SP81-3250 and SP80-1842 showed a higher decline in the F-v/F-m ratio, leaf relative water content (RWC), leaf water potential (Psi(w)), SPAD index and photosynthetic pigments due to water deficit. Drought caused less damage in the physiology of the variety SP83-2847, and it still showed rapid recovery during rewatering, including for the stomatal conductance (gs), so this variety had better adaptation under this condition. The traits F-v/F-m, Psi(w), RWC, SPAD index and photosynthetic pigments present as potential physiological indicators in order to select tolerant sugar cane cultivars to water deficit. The trait gs is more effective in differentiating the tolerant cultivars during rewatering.
