Helicobacter pylori is recognised as the most common cause of chronic active gastritis and this bacterium is also an important pathogenic factor in peptic ulcer disease. The biological factors that influence clinical outcome in H. pylori infection have been extensively studied. In addition to immunological factors in the host, bacterial virulence determinants in H. pylori strains are likely to play a crucial role in gastric cancer development. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms at the 5' flanking region of the interleukin (IL)-6 gene promoter (G or C at -174 base) have been identified and individuals with the G allele at position -174 have been shown to produce higher levels of IL-6 than those with the C/C genotype. The mucosal levels of IL-6 were reported to be increased in H. pylori-associated gastritis. The present study was conducted to examine any relationship between inflammatory cytokine polymorphisms and the inflammatory process in mucosa infected by H. pylori. In our study we did not find any association between the C and G alleles in adult patients with chronic gastritis and inflammatory process in gastric mucosa.

After the isolation of Helicobacter pylori from an injury at the stomach mucosa by Marshall and Wareen, work that was recognized with the Nobel Prize of Medicine or Physiology in 2005, many other works showed the relationship between the presence of H. pylori and diseases at the digestive system, such as gastritis, gastric, duodenal and peptic ulcer, and stomach cancer. The 13C-Urea Breath Test - 13C-UBT is a non-invasive diagnostic method that utilizes the breath of a patient to determine the presence of H. pylori through stable isotopes. This work aimed to find an ideal 13C-UBT Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectroscopy cut-off value (a threshold between positive and negative) to diagnose H. pylori infection at Brazilian population. Patients were selected at the UNESP-Botucatu Clinical Hospital Endoscopy Section. With these results it was possible to indicate that the best cut-off value is between 2.5 to 6 ‰ of Delta Over Baseline (DOB)

Optics consists in the study of interaction of light with physical systems. The human vision is a product of the interaction of light with the eye (a very peculiar physical system). Here we present a basic study of the relationship between the optics and human vision, including: - The fundaments and physicals properties who characterize the light and the colors and the characteristics of the incidence mediums. - The basics laws of geometrical optics, based in the rectilinear propagation of light in the form of a light ray, in the independence of light rays and in the principle of reversibility of the light beams. This principle is present in the process of image formations in lenses and mirrors and applied in the study of image formation in the human eye. - The refraction and reflection laws and types of lenses, who permits the construction of optics devices for the study of physical universe, and the appliances to correct vision diseases. - Presents the human vision process as consisting in the reception of light (electromagnetic radiation in the zone of wavelength visible to us) through the eye and the sending of information obtained by the retina to the brain where it is interpreted. The vision involves a biophysical relation between the light and the biological structure of the eye who is constituted by cornea, iris, crystalline and retina. Analyzes is made of how some parts of the eye performs a function in the reception and sending of information of the images to the brain

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic illness with great potential to cause comorbidities resulting from cumulative inflammatory activities, and it contributes with the increase of disabilities and death of patients. It affects 1 to 2% of world population and usually occurs between 30 and 50 years of age. Among existing therapeutic options for the disease non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) still play an important part in the treatment, being widely used by patients to relieve pain and stiffness. However, this class of drugs causes many adverse gastrointestinal effects, such as dyspepsia, heartburn, nausea and vomit, and its use is one of the most common causes of peptic ulcers. Mangiferin (a glicosilated xanthone extracted mainly from the bark of Mangifera indica L.) is the main compound of an aqueous extract made from the bark stem of the mango tree. Previous studies conducted by our research group prove the anti-inflammatory action of mangiferin on an animal model of periodontitis, and its gastroprotective action has been described before. Considering these informations this study evaluated mangiferin’s potential on the treatment of RA and on gastric ulcer healing in animal models, and analyzed toxicity parameters to assure efficacy and safety of the compound as potential new drug for the treatment of the disease. RA was induced in rats by subcutaneous injection of bovine collagen and Freund’s complete adjuvant. This method presented low incidence of RA in rats, but we were able to induce the disease in 60 to 70% of the animals. Due to the wide use of NSAIDs and its potential to cause peptic ulcers, we induced gastric ulcer on arthritic rats to analyze mangiferin’s gastric healing effect. After 14 days of treatment we noticed small increase of the lesion area of animals treated with mangiferin or ibuprofen, when compared to the animals... This study aims, by a literature review, to evaluate the effects of the phacoemulsification surgery into the endothelial cells of the cornea, especially on dogs. The phacoemulsification is a surgical technique of cataract surgery, and presents a series of factors pre, trans and post operation that can affect the cornea endothelium. Knowing that the cornea transparency is essential to the preservation of the visual acuity, and that the endothelium cells do not demonstrate an adequate regeneration, it is important to the surgeon to be aware of these factors in order to avoid or to minimize them. Among then can be mentioned: previous diseases, surgical and chemical trauma, intra-ocular lens, uveitis etc. As consequence, a reduction on the number of endothelium cells and edema can be observed, which can lead to a loss of vision by definitive cornea opacity or to late visual recuperation

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a common gastric pathogen that has infected more than 50% of the population of the world and it has been associated with chronic gastritis, gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcer, and gastric cancer. Although, almost all infected people develop gastritis, there is a variety of clinical outcomes, and only a minority (<1%) of infected individuals develop gastric cancer. There are evidences which suggest that the chronic inflammatory reaction caused by the bacterial infection may be involved in the production of reactive oxygen species or reactive nitrogen species. It may lead to DNA damage, which together with the cellular response could lead to gene mutations, chromosomal aberrations characterizing genomic instability that may represent the early step in gastric carcinogenesis. The extent and severity of gastric mucosal inflammation, as well as the clinical outcome of the infection, depend on a number of factors, including the host genetic susceptibility such SNP T3801 CYP1A1, immune response, age at which the infection was acquired, environmental factors, especially dietary and bacterial virulence factors. Due to the risk of developing gastric cancer in humans infected by H. pylori, we used the Comet Assay to investigate the influence of the SNP T3801C CYP1A1 on levels of oxidative DNA damage in gastric epithelial cells. The study was conducted with biopsies from the gastric antrum and corpus of 103 H. pylori-infected patients and 24 uninfected control patients. Genotype of SNP T3801C CYP1A1 was determined by PCR-RFLP and DNA damage levels were measured in gastric mucosal cells from antrum and corpus by the Comet assay. Levels of DNA damage in gastric mucosa cells from antrum and corpus of H. pylori-infected patients with mild, moderate, severe gastritis, and gastric cancer were significantly higher compared to uninfected normal mucosa cells. However, levels... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

The stomach is an exceptional organ, which functions are sterilize food ingested, form the primitive bolus, digest lipids and proteins, and to store food temporarily in the gastrointestinal tract. Its capacity of digesting food without digesting itself is amazing. This fact occurs due to innumerous protective substances adjacent to the gastric mucosa. When aggressive factors overwhelm the protective factors, a lesion in the gastric mucosa is formed. Lesions that reach the lamina propria are called gastric ulcers, which are classified macroscopically as openings on the gastric wall and; microscopically, as a gastric injury characterized with epithelial desquamation, mucosal hemorrhage, glandular damage and eosinophilic infiltration. The current therapy available is effective, although it causes collateral effects, therefore researching new drugs is necessary. This work aim to evaluate the gastroprotective effect of epicatechin against gastric lesions induced by absolute ethanol and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which are the main causes of this disease currently, yet we aim to study the main mechanisms of action responsible for the gastroprotective effect. The results show that epicatechin has a significant macroscopic and microscopic gastroprotective effect against gastric injuries induced by ethanol and indomethacin, acting locally by augmenting gastric mucus secretion and it also acts via antioxidant system by holding total glutathione levels. Epicatechin’s gastroprotective mechanisms depend on the activation of sulfhydryl compounds and doesn’t depend on the NO-synthase enzyme
