Using first-principles calculations we show that the band gap of bilayer sheets of semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) can be reduced smoothly by applying vertical compressive pressure. These materials undergo a universal reversible semiconductor-to-metal (S-M) transition at a critical pressure. The S-M transition is attributed to lifting of the degeneracy of the bands at the Fermi level caused by interlayer interactions via charge transfer from the metal to the chalcogen. The S-M transition can be reproduced even after incorporating the band gap corrections using hybrid functionals and the GW method. The ability to tune the band gap of TMDs in a controlled fashion over a wide range of energy opens up the possibility for its usage in a range of applications.

We study optimal control of Markov processes with age-dependent transition rates. The control policy is chosen continuously over time based on the state of the process and its age. We study infinite horizon discounted cost and infinite horizon average cost problems. Our approach is via the construction of an equivalent semi-Markov decision process. We characterise the value function and optimal controls for both discounted and average cost cases.

There are very few magnetic members among the 4d and 5d transition metal oxides. In the present work, we examine the recent observation of a high Neel temperature T-N in the 4d oxides SrTcO3 and CaTcO3. Considering a multiband Hubbard model, we find that T-N is larger in the limit of a large bandwidth and vanishingly small intra-atomic exchange interaction strength, contrary to our conventional understanding of magnetism. This is traced to specific aspects of the d(3) configuration at the transition metal site and the study reveals additional examples with high T-N.

For several years, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug mefenamic acid, MA, has been known to exist as dimorphs (I and II). We report a new metastable polymorph (III) of MA obtained during attempted co-crystallization experiments and establish its stability relationship with existing forms. At elevated temperatures I and III convert to II, as evident from DSC experiments. On the basis of the lattice energy calculations in conjunction with thermal analysis, the stability order is proposed to be I > II > III at ambient conditions, whereas at elevated temperature the order is II > I > III. In either condition III is a metastable form and hence transforms to I at ambient conditions and to II at higher temperatures. Also we report the structural studies of a DMF solvate and a cytosine complex.

Flap dynamics of HIV-1 protease (HIV-pr) controls the entry of inhibitors and substrates to the active site. Dynamical models from previous simulations are not all consistent with each other and not all are supported by the NMR results. In the present work, the er effect of force field on the dynamics of HIV-pr is investigated by MD simulations using three AMBER force fields ff99, ff99SB, and ff03. The generalized order parameters for amide backbone are calculated from the three force fields and compared with the NMR S2 values. We found that the ff99SB and ff03 force field calculated order parameters agree reasonably well with the NMR S2 values, whereas ff99 calculated values deviate most from the NMR order parameters. Stereochemical geometry of protein models from each force field also agrees well with the remarks from NMR S2 values. However, between ff99SB and ff03, there are several differences, most notably in the loop regions. It is found that these loops are, in general, more flexible in the ff03 force field. This results in a larger active site cavity in the simulation with the ff03 force field. The effect of this difference in computer-aided drug design against flexible receptors is discussed.

Systematic measurements pertinent to the magnetocaloric effect and nature of magnetic transition around the transition temperature are performed in the 10 nm Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 nanoparticles (PCMO10). Maxwell's relation is employed to estimate the change in magnetic entropy. At Curie temperature (T-C) similar to 83.5 K, the change in magnetic entropy (-Delta S-M) discloses a typical variation with a value 0.57 J/kg K, and is found to be magnetic field dependent. From the area under the curve (Delta S vs T), the refrigeration capacity is calculated at T-C similar to 83.5K and it is found to be 7.01 J/kg. Arrott plots infer that due to the competition between the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic interactions, the magnetic phase transition in PCMO10 is broadly spread over both in temperature as well as magnetic field coordinates. Upon tuning the particle size, size distribution, morphology, and relative fraction of magnetic phases, it may be possible to enhance the magnetocalorific effect further in PCMO10. The detection of sound signals in vertebrates involves a complex network of different mechano-sensory elements in the inner ear. An especially important element in this network is the hair bundle, an antenna-like array of stereocilia containing gated ion channels that operate under the control of one or more adaptation motors. Deflections of the hair bundle by sound vibrations or thermal fluctuations transiently open the ion channels, allowing the flow of ions through them, and producing an electrical signal in the process, eventually causing the sensation of hearing. Recent high frequency (0.1-10 kHz) measurements by Kozlov et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 109, 2896 (2012)] of the power spectrum and the mean square displacement of the thermal fluctuations of the hair bundle suggest that in this regime the dynamics of the hair bundle are subdiffusive. This finding has been explained in terms of the simple Brownian motion of a filament connecting neighboring stereocilia (the tip link), which is modeled as a viscoelastic spring. In the present paper, the diffusive anomalies of the hair bundle are ascribed to tip link fluctuations that evolve by fractional Brownian motion, which originates in fractional Gaussian noise and is characterized by a power law memory. The predictions of this model for the power spectrum of the hair bundle and its mean square displacement are consistent with the experimental data and the known properties of the tip link. We report the variation of glass transition temperature in supported thin films of polymer nanocomposites, consisting of polymer grafted nanoparticles embedded in a homopolymer matrix. We observe a systematic variation of the estimated glass transition temperature T-g, with the volume fraction of added polymer grafted nanoparticles. We have correlated the observed T-g variation with the underlying morphological transitions of the nanoparticle dispersion in the films. Our data also suggest the possibility of formation of a low-mobility glass or gel-like layer of nanoparticles at the interface, which could play a significant role in determining T-g of the films provided. The nontrivial electronic topology of a topological insulator is thus far known to display signatures in a robust metallic state at the surface. Here, we establish vibrational anomalies in Raman spectra of the bulk that signify changes in electronic topology: an E-g(2) phonon softens unusually and its linewidth exhibits an asymmetric peak at the pressure induced electronic topological transition (ETT) in Sb2Se3 crystal. Our first-principles calculations confirm the electronic transition from band to topological insulating state with reversal of parity of electronic bands passing through a metallic state at the ETT, but do not capture the phonon anomalies which involve breakdown of adiabatic approximation due to strongly coupled dynamics of phonons and electrons. Treating this within a four-band model of topological insulators, we elucidate how nonadiabatic renormalization of phonons constitutes readily measurable bulk signatures of an ETT, which will facilitate efforts to develop topological insulators by modifying a band insulator. The interaction between the digital human model (DHM) and environment typically occurs in two distinct modes; one, when the DHM maintains contacts with the environment using its self weight, wherein associated reaction forces at the interface due to gravity are unidirectional; two, when the DHM applies both tension and compression on the environment through anchoring. For static balancing in first mode of interaction, it is sufficient to maintain the projection of the centre of mass (COM) inside the convex region induced by the weight supporting segments of the body on a horizontal plane. In DHM, static balancing is required while performing specified tasks such as reach, manipulation and locomotion; otherwise the simulations would not be realistic. This paper establishes the geometric relationships that must be satisfied for maintaining static balance while altering the support configurations for a given posture and altering the posture for a given support condition. For a given location of the COM for a system supported by multiple point contacts, the conditions for simultaneous withdrawal of a specified set of contacts have been determined in terms of the convex hulls of the subsets of the points of contact. When the projection of COM must move beyond the existing support for performing some task, new supports must be enabled for maintaining static balance. This support seeking behavior could also manifest while planning for reduction of support stresses. Feasibility of such a support depends upon the availability of necessary features in the environment. Geometric conditions necessary for selection of new support on horizontal, inclined and vertical surfaces within the workspace of the DHM for such dynamic scenario have been derived. The concepts developed are demonstrated using the cases of sit-to-stand posture transition for manipulation of COM within the convex supporting polygon, and statically stable walking gaits for support seeking within the kinematic capabilities of the DHM. The theory developed helps in making the DHM realize appropriate behaviors in diverse scenarios autonomously.

A systematic x-ray and neutron powder diffraction study of the giant tetragonality multiferroic (1-x) BiFeO3-(x) PbTiO3 have revealed that the compositions close to the morphotropic phase boundary present two different structural phase transition scenarios on cooling from the cubic phase: (i) cubic -> tetragonal (T-2) + tetragonal (T-1) -> tetragonal (T-1) and (ii) cubic -> tetragonal (T-2) + tetragonal (T-1) + rhombohedral (R3c) -> tetragonal (T-1) + rhombohedral (R3c). The comparatively larger tetragonality (c/a - 1) of the T-1 phase as compared to the coexisting isostructural T-2 phase is shown to be a result of significantly greater degree of overlap of the Pb/Bi-6s and Ti/Fe-3d with the O-2p orbitals as compared to that in the T-2 phase. The formation/suppression of the minor metastable rhombohedral phase seems to be governed by subtle play of local kinetic factors. In the scenario when the minor rhombohedral (R) phase is formed along with the tetragonal phases it is able to accommodate the large transformation stress in the system due to formation of the tetragonal phases, and prevent the solid from disintegration into powder after sintering. When the metastable rhombohedral phase is not formed, the large transformation strain ruptures the grain boundaries leading to fragmentation of the dense solid to powder. We report ultrafast quasiparticle (QP) dynamics and coherent acoustic phonons in undoped CaFe2As2 iron pnictide single crystals exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) and concurrent structural phase transition at temperature T-SDW similar to 165K using femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. The contributions in transient differential reflectivity arising from exponentially decaying QP relaxation and oscillatory coherent acoustic phonon mode show large variations in the vicinity of T-SDW. From the temperature-dependence of the QP recombination dynamics in the SDW phase, we evaluate a BCS-like temperature dependent charge gap with its zero-temperature value of similar to(1.6 perpendicular to 0.2)k(B)T(SDW), whereas, much above T-SDW, an electron-phonon coupling constant of similar to 0.13 has been estimated from the linear temperature-dependence of the QP relaxation time. The long-wavelength coherent acoustic phonons with typical time-period of similar to 100 ps have been analyzed in the light of propagating strain pulse model providing important results for the optical constants, sounds velocity and the elastic modulus of the crystal in the whole temperature range of 3 to 300 K.

Mn doping in ZnS nanoplatelets has been shown to induce a structural transition from the wurtzite to the zinc blende phase. We trace the origin of this transition to quantum confinement effects, which shift the valence band maximum of the wurtzite and zinc blende polyrnorphs of ZnS at different rates as a function of the nanocrystal size, arising from different effective hole masses in the two structures. This modifies the covalency associated with Mn incorporation and is reflected in the size-dependent binding energy difference for the two structures.

We present the selective sensing of multiple transition metal ions in water using a synthetic single probe. The probe is made up of pyrene and pyridine as signaling and interacting moiety, respectively. The sensor showed different responses toward metal ions just by varying the medium of detection. In organic solvent (acetonitrile), the probe showed selective detection of Hg2+ ion. In water, the fluorescence quenching was observed with three metal ions, Cu2+, Hg2+, and Ni2+. Further, just by varying the surface charge on the micellar aggregates, the probe could detect and discriminate the above-mentioned three different toxic metal ions appropriately. In neutral micelles (Brij 58), the probe showed a selective interaction with Hg2+ ion as observed in acetonitrile medium. However, in anionic micellar medium (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), the probe showed changes with both Cu2+ and Ni2+. under UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The discrimination between these two ions was achieved by recording their emission spectra, where it showed selective quenching with Cu2+.

The relative levels of different sigma factors dictate the expression profile of a bacterium. Extracytoplasmic function sigma factors synchronize the transcriptional profile with environmental conditions. The cellular concentration of free extracytoplasmic function sigma factors is regulated by the localization of this protein in a sigma/anti-sigma complex. Anti-sigma factors are multi-domain proteins with a receptor to sense environmental stimuli and a conserved anti-sigma domain (ASD) that binds a sigma factor. Here we describe the structure of Mycobacterium tuberculosis anti-sigma(D) (RsdA) in complex with the -35 promoter binding domain of sigma(D) (sigma(D)(4)). We note distinct conformational features that enable the release of sigma(D) by the selective proteolysis of the ASD in RsdA. The structural and biochemical features of the sigma(D)/RsdA complex provide a basis to reconcile diverse regulatory mechanisms that govern sigma/anti-sigma interactions despite high overall structural similarity. Multiple regulatory mechanisms embedded in an ASD scaffold thus provide an elegant route to rapidly re-engineer the expression profile of a bacterium in response to an environmental stimulus.
