High-density polyethylene with shish-kebab structure, prepared by a melt extrusion drawing, was employed to investigate the effect of the well-defined lamellar orientation on the deformation characteristics under uniaxial tensile deformation along the drawing direction. This was done by investigating the true stress-true strain dependencies at different strain rates, recovery properties, and stress relaxation measurements. Measurements were complemented by recording in-situ wide-angle X-ray scattering patterns during the deformation process. The oriented samples showed not only a higher modulus, but different from analogous isotropic samples, a homogeneous deformation without necking. The true strain associated with the onset of fibrillation was determined. Because of the preorientation, it is shifted to 0.3, which is below the value 0.6 of the isotropic counterpart. The main finding is a strong enhancement of the Viscous force, as was revealed by stress relaxation experiments; the viscous force takes up 70% of the total stress. The presence of shish-kebabs, i.e., interconnected lamellae in a stack, seems to be responsible for the high viscous force in the oriented samples. The absence of necking has to be ascribed to the high viscous force.

The influence of physical aging on the tensile fracture behavior of notched Polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ-E) samples has been studied. The dependence of fracture stress and strain on physical aging has been explained. The glass transition temperature (T-g) and the endothermic peak at the end of T-g transition with different physical aging were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the results have also been explained. The morphology of fracture surface was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The viscoelastic behavior of phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) and its relationship to yielding was studied. The following phenomena were observed: (1) The relaxation behavior at strain near yield closely approximated that at low strain but near the T-g; (2) the temperature and strain rate dependence of yield stress could be modeled by the one-process Eyring theory and the value of the activation volume was the same as that of the glass transition; and (3) according to the Zhurkov-Bueche equation, the cu transition was related to the yield behavior. All these results indicated that the glass transition was the main factor that controlled the yield behavior. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Flexural fatigue tests were performed on an injection-moulded glass-fiber reinforced blend of polyphenylene ether ketone and polyphenylene sulfide composite using four-point bending at a series of fixed mean stress levels with varying stress amplitude. Attention was given to identifying the effects of mean stress and stress amplitude on the fatigue life and failure mechanisms. It was found that the fatigue life of the studied material decreased sharply with increasing stress amplitude at a constant mean stress level and also decreased at a fixed stress amplitude with increasing mean stress. However, analyses of the fatigue data and failure behaviour reveal that, for the studied material, fatigue failure mechanisms depend on the relative importance of mean stress and stress amplitude. At a mean stress level of 80% ultimate flexural strength, the failure results from accumulation of creep strain, while at mean stress levels of 40%, 50% and 60% ultimate flexural strength, the magnitude of stress amplitude influences the type of failure mechanism. As stress amplitude is reduced, the fatigue failure mechanism changes from matrix yielding dominated to crack growth dominated fracture.

Phenolphthalein polyether ketone (PEK-C) exhibits a marked tensile yield behaviour. The yield stress depends on strain rate and the activation volume V could be evaluated from the data of the yield stress. From the creep and stress relaxation behaviour,

Polymer nanocomposites offer the potential of enhanced properties such as increased modulus and barrier properties to the end user. Much work has been carried out on the effects of extrusion conditions on melt processed nanocomposites but very little research has been conducted on the use of polymer nanocomposites in semi-solid forming processes such as thermoforming and injection blow molding. These processes are used to make much of today’s packaging, and any improvements in performance such as possible lightweighting due to increased modulus would bring signi?cant bene?ts both economically and environmentally. The work described here looks at the biaxial deformation of polypropylene–clay nanocomposites under industrial forming conditions in order to determine if the presence of clay affects processability, structure and mechanical properties of the stretched material. Melt compounded polypropylene/clay composites in sheet form were biaxially stretched at a variety of processing conditions to examine the effect of high temperature, high strain and high strain rate processing on sheet structure
and properties.
A biaxial test rig was used to carry out the testing which imposed conditions on the sheet that are representative of those applied in injection blow molding and thermoforming. Results show that the presence of clay increases the yield stress relative to the un?lled material at typical processing temperatures and that the sensitivity of the yield stress to temperature is greater for the ?lled material. The stretching process is found to have a signi?cant effect on the delamination and alignment of clay particles (as observed by TEM) and on yield stress and elongation at break of the stretched sheet.

The present study examined the consistency over time of individual differences in behavioral and physiological responsiveness of calves to intuitively alarming test situations as well as the relationships between behavioral and physiological measures. Twenty Holstein Friesian heifer calves were individually subjected to the same series of two behavioral and two hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis reactivity tests at 3, 13 and 26 weeks of age. Novel environment (open field, OF) and novel object (NO) tests involved measurement of behavioral, plasma cortisol and heart rate responses. Plasma ACTH and/or cortisol response profiles were determined after administration of exogenous CRH and ACTH, respectively, in the HPA axis reactivity tests. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to condense correlated measures within ages into principal components reflecting independent dimensions underlying the calves' reactivity. Cortisol responses to the OF and NO tests were positively associated with the latency to contact and negatively related to the time spent in contact with the NO. Individual differences in scores of a principal component summarizing this pattern of inter-correlations, as well as differences in separate measures of adrenocortical and behavioral reactivity in the OF and NO tests proved highly consistent over time. The cardiac response to confinement in a start box prior to the OF test was positively associated with the cortisol responses to the OF and NO tests at 26 weeks of age. HPA axis reactivity to ACTH or CRH was unrelated to adrenocortical and behavioral responses to novelty. These findings strongly suggest that the responsiveness of calves was mediated by stable individual characteristics. Correlated adrenocortical and behavioral responses to novelty may reflect underlying fearfulness, defining the individual's susceptibility to the elicitation of fear. Other independent characteristics mediating reactivity may include activity or coping style (related to locomotion) and underlying sociality (associated with vocalization). (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. Objective: The proportion of overweight and obese people has grown rapidly, and obesity has now been widely recognized as an important public health problem. At the came time, stress has increased in working life. The 2 problems could be connected if work stress promotes unhealthy eating habits and sedentary behavior and thereby contributes to weight gain. This study explored the association between work stress and body mass index (BMI; kg/m(2)). Methods: We used cross-sectional questionnaire data obtained from 45,810 female and male employees participating in the ongoing Finnish Public Sector Cohort Study. We constructed individual-level scores, as well as occupational- and organizational-level aggregated scores for work stress, as indicated by the demand/control model and the effort-reward imbalance model. Linear regression analyses were stratified by sex and socioeconomic status (SES) and adjusted for age, marital status, job contract, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and negative affectivity. Results: The results with the aggregated scores showed that lower job control, higher job strain, and higher effort-reward imbalance were associated with a higher BMI. In men, lower job demands were also associated with a higher BMI. These associations were not accounted for by SES, although an additional adjustment for SES attenuated the associations. The results obtained with the individual-level scores were in the same direction, but the relationships were weaker than those obtained with the aggregated scores. Conclusions: This study shows a weak association between work stress and BMI.
