PURPOSE: To investigate the accuracy of 1.0T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to measure the ventricular size in experimental hydrocephalus in pup rats. METHODS: Wistar rats were subjected to hydrocephalus by intracisternal injection of 20% kaolin (n=13). Ten rats remained uninjected to be used as controls. At the endpoint of experiment animals were submitted to MRI of brain and killed. The ventricular size was assessed using three measures: ventricular ratio (VR), the cortical thickness (Cx) and the ventricles area (VA), performed on photographs of anatomical sections and MRI. RESULTS: The images obtained through MR present enough quality to show the lateral ventricular cavities but not to demonstrate the difference between the cortex and the white matter, as well as the details of the deep structures of the brain. There were no statistically differences between the measures on anatomical sections and MRI of VR and Cx (p=0.9946 and p=0.5992, respectively). There was difference between VA measured on anatomical sections and MRI (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: The parameters obtained through 1.0T MRI were sufficient in quality to individualize the ventricular cavities and the cerebral cortex, and to calculate the ventricular ratio in hydrocephalus rats when compared to their respective anatomic slice.

Studies on the collagen system of the human myocardium are still limited compared to those on small laboratory animals. The aim of this work was to observe the collagen tissue of the myocardium of the human heart as a function of age. The types of collagen, as well as the density of collagen tissue and the diameter of collagen fibrils, were examined. Fragments of the left ventricular wall from 15 hearts, 5 from children, 5 from young adults, and 5 from elderly individuals, were analyzed by using the Picrosirius-polarization method and by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed the presence of collagen type III and collagen type I, both in the endomysium and perimysium of the 3 groups studied. Measurements of collagen content in myocardial tissue displayed that both endomysial and perimysial collagen increase in number and thickness in the adult and elderly. These histochemical results coincided with the observations obtained with the electron microscope in showing an increase in the number of collagen fibrils with a large diameter in the adult and elderly hearts. The present results on cardiac collagen may be important for assessing the pathogenesis of several cardiopathies in the hearts of children, young adults, and the elderly.

PURPOSE: Describe a modified technique to increase nostril cross-sectional area using rib and septal cartilage graft over alar nasal cartilages. METHODS: A modified surgical technique was used to obtain, carve and insert cartilage grafts over alar nasal cartilages. This study used standardized pictures and measured 90 cadaveric nostril cross-sectional area using Autocad (c); 30 were taken before any procedure and 60 were taken after grafts over lateral crura (30 using costal cartilage and 30 using septal cartilage). Statistical analysis were assessed using a model for repeated measures and ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) for the variable "area". RESULTS: There's statistical evidence that rib cartilage graft is more effective than septal cartilage graft. The mean area after the insertion of septal cartilage graft is smaller than the mean area under rib graft treatment (no confidence interval for mean difference contains the zero value and all P-values are below the significance level of 5%). CONCLUSIONS: The technique presented is applicable to increase nostril cross section area in cadavers. This modified technique revealed to enhance more nostril cross section area with costal cartilage graft over lateral crura rather than by septal graft.

Aims: To assess whether contractile reserve during dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) can predict left ventricular functional recovery in patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy and to assess myocardial fibrosis by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in these patients. Methods: Nine patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy were enrolled. All patients underwent DSE and were followed for six months, when a rest Doppler echocardiogram was repeated. MRI was also performed at the beginning of follow-up to identify myocardial fibrosis. Results: Mean age was 29 +/- 7.9 years and mean left ventricular ejection fraction at baseline was 39.4 +/- 8.6% (range 24-49%). Eight of the nine patients showed left ventricular functional recovery with mean ejection fraction at follow-up of 57.1 +/- 13.8%. The ejection fraction response to DSE did not predict recovery at follow-up. On the other hand, left ventricular ejection fraction at baseline correlated with ejection fraction at follow-up. Mild fibrosis was detected in only one patient. Conclusion: Left ventricular ejection fraction at baseline was a predictor of left ventricular functional recovery in patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy. Dobutamine stress echocardiography at presentation of the disease did not predict recovery at follow-up. Myocardial fibrosis appeared to be uncommon in this cardiomyopathy. We have previously reported that noradrenaline (NA) microinjected into the lateral septal area (LSA) caused pressor and bradicardic responses that were mediated by vasopressin release into the circulation through the paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus (PVN). Although PVN is the final structure involved in the cardiovascular responses caused by NA in the LSA, there is no evidence of direct connections between these areas, suggesting that some structures could be links in this pathway. In the present study, we verified the effect of reversible synaptic inactivation of the medial amygdaloid nucleus (MeA), bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BNST) or diagonal band of Broca (DBB) with Cobalt Chloride (CoCl2) on the cardiovascular response to NA microinjection into the LSA of unanesthetized rats. Male Wistar rats had guide cannulae implanted into the LSA and the MeA, BNST or DBB for drug administration, and a femoral catheter for blood pressure and heart rate recordings. Local microinjection of CoCl2 (1 mm in 100 nL) into the MeA significantly reduced the pressor and bradycardic responses caused by NA microinjection (21 nmol in 200 nL) into the LSA. In contrast, microinjection of CoCl2 into the BNST or DBB did not change the cardiovascular responses to NA into the LSA. The results indicate that synapses within the MeA, but not in BNST or DBB, are involved in the cardiovascular pathway activated by NA microinjection into the LSA.

The Er3+-Yb3+ co-doped MgAl2O4 phosphor powders have been prepared by the combustion method. The phosphor powders are well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive (EDX) techniques. The absorption spectrum of Er3+/Er3+-Yb3+ doped/co-doped phosphor powder has been recorded in the UV-Vis-NIR region of the electro-magnetic spectrum. The evidence for indirect pumping under 980 nm excitation of Er3+ from Yb3+ was observed in the MgAl2O4 matrix material. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to identify the defect centres responsible for the thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) process in MgAl2O4:Er3+ phosphor. Three defect centres were identified in irradiated phosphor by ESR measurements which were carried out at room temperature and these were assigned to an O- ion and F+ centres. O- ion (hole centre) appears to correlate with the low temperature TSL peak at 210 A degrees C and one of the F+ centres (electron centre) is related to the high temperature peak at 460 A degrees C.

We have previously reported that stimulation of alpha-1 adrenoceptors by noradrenaline (NA) injected into the lateral septal area (LSA) of anaesthetized rats causes pressor and bradycardic responses that are mediated by acute vasopressin release into the circulation through activation of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Although the PVN is the final structure of this pathway, the LSA has no direct connections with the PVN, suggesting that other structures may connect these areas. To address this issue, the present study employed c-Fos immunohistochemistry to investigate changes caused by NA microinjection into the LSA in neuronal activation in brain structures related to systemic vasopressin release. NA microinjected in the LSA caused pressor and bradycardic responses, which were blocked by intraseptal administration of alpha-1 adrenoceptor antagonist (WB4101, 10 nmol/200 nL) or systemic V-1 receptor antagonist (dTyr(CH2)5(Me)AVP, 50 mu g/kg). NA also increased c-Fos immunoreactivity in the prelimbic cortex (PL), infralimbic cortex (IL), dorsomedial periaqueductal gray (dmPAG), bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), PVN, and medial amygdala (MeA). No differences in the diagonal band of Broca, cingulate cortex, and dorsolateral periaqueductal gray (dlPAG) were found. Systemic administration of the vasopressin receptor antagonist dTyr AVP (CH2)5(Me) did not change the increase in c-Fos expression induced by intra-septal NA. This latter effect, however, was prevented by local injection of the alpha-1 adrenoceptor antagonist WB4101. These results suggest that areas such as the PL, IL, dmPAG, BNST, MeA, and PVN could be part of a circuit responsible for vasopressin release after activation of alpha-1 adrenoceptors in the LSA.

Biasi C., Borelli V., Benedicto H.G., Pereira M.R., Favaron P.O. & Bombonato P.P. 2012. [Comparative analysis between ventricular and sinoatrial node vascularization in cats.] Analise comparativa entre a vascularizacao ventricular e do no sinoatrial em gatos. Pesquisa Veterinaria Brasileira 31(1): 78-82. Setor de Anatomia dos Animais Domesticos e Silvestres, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinaria e Zootecnia, Universidade de Sao Paulo, Av. Prof. Dr. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, Cidade Universitaria, Sao Paulo, SP 05508-000, Brazil. E-mail: caiobiasi@usp.br The possible existence of interdependence in the blood nutrition of both atrial and ventricular territories has been a subject of concern to cardiologists, mainly related to vascularization of the sinoatrial node and its dependence on just one coronary artery or both, and its relation with the predominance of these vessels in the ventricular vascularization. Therefore, this research aimed evaluated the relation of blood irrigation of the sinoatrial node in relation to the coronary artery predominance in the ventricle vascularization. In doing so, we analyzed 30 hearts of cats without pedigree, males and females, adults of several ages. They were not carrying any heart problems. The hearts were injected by the thoracic aorta with Neoprene Latex 450, stained with red pigment, and then they were dissected. It was found that when there was a prevalence of ventricular vascularization of the left type (63.34%) the sinoatrial node irrigation was predominantly in the dependency of the Ramus proximalis atrii dextri (78.9%) or with less frequency by Ramus proximalis atrii sinister (21.1%). In the ventricular vascularization of the balanced type (33.34%), the pacemaker irrigation was in dependence more often of Ramus proximalis atrii dextri (80%) or with less frequency the nutrition of the sinoatrial node occurred by Ramus proximalis atril sinister (20%). In a single-case, we observed the ventricular vascularization of the right type (3.34%), the pacemaker nutrition was in an exclusive dependence of the Ramus intermedius atril dextri. These results suggest in this species there is no relationship between both the sinoatrial node irrigation and the type of ventricular vascularization, regardless of gender.

Background: The controversial effects promoted by cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) on the ventricular repolarization (VR) have motivated VR evaluation by body surface potential mapping (BSPM) in CRT patients. Methods: Fifty-two CRT patients, mean age 58.8 +/- 12.3 years, 31 male, LVEF 27.5 +/- 9.2, NYHA III-IV heart failure with QRS181.5 +/- 14.2 ms, underwent 87-lead BSPM in sinus rhythm (BASELINE) and biventricular pacing (BIV). Measurements of mean and corrected QT intervals and dispersion, mean and corrected T peak end intervals and their dispersion, and JT intervals characterized global and regional (RV, Intermediate, and LV regions) ventricular repolarization response. Results: Global QTm (P < 0.001) and QTcm (P < 0.05) were decreased in BIV; QTm was similar across regions in both modes (P = ns); QTcm values were lower in RV/LV than in Intermediate region in BASELINE and BIV (P < 0.001); only RV/Septum showed a significant difference (P < 0.01) in the BIV mode. QTD values both of BASELINE (P < 0.01) and BIV (P < 0.001) were greater in the Intermediate than in the LV region. CRT effect significantly reduced global/regional QTm and QTcm values. QTD was globally decreased in RV/LV (Intermediate: P = ns). BIV mode significantly reduced global T peak end mean and corrected intervals and their dispersion. JT values were not significant. Conclusions: Ventricular repolarization parameters QTm, QTcm, and QTD global/regional values, as assessed by BSPM, were reduced in patients under CRT with severe HF and LBBB. Greater recovery impairment in the Intermediate region was detected by the smaller variation of its dispersion.

Tb3+ doped CaZrO3 has been prepared by an easy solution combustion synthesis method. The combustion derived powder was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy techniques. A room temperature photoluminescence study showed that the phosphors can be efficiently excited by 251 nm light with a weak emission in the blue and orange region and a strong emission in green light region. CaZrO3:Tb3+ exhibits three thermoluminescence (TL) glow peaks at 126 degrees C, 200 degrees C and 480 degrees C. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to study the defect centres induced in the phosphor by gamma irradiation and also to identify the centres responsible for the TL peaks. The room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of two distinct centres. One of the centres (centre I) with principal g-value 2.0233 is identified as an O- ion. Centre II with an axial symmetric g-tensor with principal values g(parallel to) = 1.9986 and g(perpendicular to) = 2.0023 is assigned to an F+ centre (singly ionised oxygen vacancy). An additional defect centre is observed during thermal annealing experiments and this centre (assigned to F+ centre) seems to originate from an F centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons). The F centre and also the F+ centre appear to correlate with the observed high temperature TL peak in CaZrO3:Tb3+ phosphor. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objectives: Chronic right ventricular (RV) pressure overload results in pathologic RV hypertrophy and diminished RV function. Although aortic constriction has been shown to improve systolic function in acute RV failure, its effect on RV responses to chronic pressure overload is unknown. Methods: Adjustable vascular banding devices were placed on the main pulmonary artery and descending aorta. In 5 animals (sham group), neither band was inflated. In 9 animals (PAB group), only the pulmonary arterial band was inflated, with adjustments on a weekly basis to generate systemic or suprasystemic RV pressure at 28 days. In 9 animals, both pulmonary arterial and aortic devices were inflated (PAB+AO group), the pulmonary arterial band as for the PAB group and the aortic band adjusted to increase proximal systolic blood pressure by approximately 20 mm Hg. Effects on the functional performance were assessed 5 weeks after surgery by conductance catheters, followed by histologic and molecular assessment. Results: Contractile performance was significantly improved in the PAB+AO group versus the PAB group for both ventricles. Relative to sham-operated animals, both banding groups showed significant differences in myocardial histologic and molecular responses. Relative to the PAB group, the PAB+AO group showed significantly decreased RV cardiomyocyte diameter, decreased RV collagen content, and reduced RV expression of endothelin receptor type B, matrix metalloproteinase 9, and transforming growth factor beta genes. Conclusions: Aortic constriction in an experimental model of chronic RV pressure overload not only resulted in improved biventricular systolic function but also improved myocardial remodeling. These data suggest that chronically increased left ventricular afterload leads to a more physiologically hypertrophic response in the pressure-overloaded RV. The lateral septal area (LSA) is a limbic structure involved in autonomic, neuroendocrine and behavioural responses. An inhibitory influence of the LSA on baroreflex activity has been reported; however, the local neurotransmitter involved in this modulation is still unclear. In the present study, we verified the involvement of local LSA adrenoceptors in modulating cardiac baroreflex activity in unanaesthetized rats. Bilateral microinjection of the selective a1-adrenoceptor antagonist WB4101 (10 nmol in a volume of 100 nl) into the LSA decreased baroreflex bradycardia evoked by blood pressure increases, but had no effect on reflex tachycardia evoked by blood pressure decreases. Nevertheless, bilateral administration of the selective a2-adrenoceptor antagonist RX821002 (10 nmol in 100 nl) increased baroreflex tachycardia without affecting reflex bradycardia. Treatment of the LSA with a cocktail containing WB4101 and RX821002 decreased baroreflex bradycardia and increased reflex tachycardia. The non-selective beta-adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol (10 nmol in 100 nl) did not affect either reflex bradycardia or tachycardia. Microinjection of noradrenaline into the LSA increased reflex bradycardia and decreased the baroreflex tachycardic response, an opposite effect compared with those observed after double blockade of a1- and a2-adrenoceptors, and this effect of noradrenaline was blocked by local LSA pretreatment with the cocktail containing WB4101 and RX821002. The present results provide advances in our understanding of the baroreflex neural circuitry. Taken together, data suggest that local LSA a1- and a2-adrenoceptors modulate baroreflex control of heart rate differently. Data indicate that LSA a1-adrenoceptors exert a facilitatory modulation on baroreflex bradycardia, whereas local a2-adrenoceptors exert an inhibitory modulation on reflex tachycardia.

A 6mm segmental defect was performed on the metaphyseal region of the tibia of 12 rabbits and the autoclaved fragmented heterolog cortical bone conserved in glycerin (98%) and methylmethacrylate was used as a bone graft for the reconstruction. The graft was placed in the receptor bed and its integration was evaluated by computed tomography after 30, 60 and 90 days. There was gradual bone graft incorporation in the receptor bed during the time in 100% of the cases. Fragmented cortical bone heterograft and methylmethacrylate was biologically compatible and promotes bone defect reparation without signs of infection, migration and or rejection, featuring a new option of osseous substitute to fill in bone defects.

Background: Performing a coronary angiography in patients with heart failure of unknown etiology is often justified by the diagnostic assessment of ischemic heart disease. However, the clinical benefit of this strategy is not known. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of ischemic heart disease by angiographic criteria in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction of unknown etiology, as well as its impact on therapy decisions. Methods: Consecutive outpatients with heart failure and systolic dysfunction, who had an indication for coronary angiography to clarify the etiology of heart disease were assessed from 1 January 2009 to December 31, 2010. Patients diagnosed with coronary artery disease, positive serology for Chagas disease, congenital heart disease, valve disease or patients undergoing cardiac transplantation were excluded from the analysis. The sample was divided into two groups according to the indication for catheterization. Group-1: Symptomatic due to angina or heart failure. Group-2: Presence of >= 2 risk factors for coronary artery disease Results: One hundred and seven patients were included in the analysis, with 51 (47.7%) patients in Group 1 and 56 (52.3%) in Group 2. The prevalence of ischemic heart disease was 9.3% (10 patients), and all belonged to Group 1 (p = 0.0001). During follow-up, only 4 (3.7%) were referred for CABG; 3 (2.8%) patients had procedure-related complications. Conclusion: In our study, coronary angiography in patients with heart failure and systolic dysfunction of unknown etiology, although supported by current guidelines, did not show benefits when performed only due to the presence of risk factors for coronary artery disease.
