The exhibition categorises and sets out the last nine years of PS2's 'external' projects. The projects are located mainly at empty sites and public spaces, in locations which are under-resourced in terms of cultural provisions and community facilities. The exhibition categorises the projects, highlighting the unique features of the work. It is accompanied by an essay and seminar.

Double Skin Façades (DSFs) are becoming increasingly popular architecture for commercial office buildings. Although DSFs are widely accepted to have the capacity to offer significant passive benefits and enable low energy building performance, there remains a paucity of knowledge with regard to their operation. Identification of the most determinant architectural parameters of DSFs is the focus of ongoing research. This paper presents an experimental and simulation study of a DSF installed on a commercial building in Dublin, Ireland. The DSF is south facing and acts to buffer the building from winter heat losses, but risks enhancing over-heating on sunny days. The façade is extensively monitored during winter months. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) models are used to simulate the convective operation of the DSF. This research concludes DSFs as suited for passive, low energy architecture in temperature climates such as Ireland but identifies issues requiring attention in DSF design.

This paper describes a ‘drive-by’ method of bridge inspection using an instrumented vehicle. Accelerometers on the vehicle are proposed as a means of detecting damage on the bridge in the time it takes for the vehicle to cross the bridge at full highway speed. For a perfectly smooth road profile, the method is shown to be feasible. Changes in bridge damping, which is an indicator of damage, are clearly visible in the acceleration signal of a quarter-car vehicle on a smooth road surface modelled using MatLab. When road profile is considered, the influence of changes in bridge damping on the vehicle acceleration signal is much less clear. However, when a half-car model is used on a road with a rough profile, it is again possible to detect changes in bridge damping, provided the vehicle has two identical axles.
