The aim of this thesis was to quantify experimentally in the field the effects of different timing regimes of hypoxia on the structure of benthic communities in a transitional habitat. The experiment was performed from 8 July to 29 July 2019 in a shallow subtidal area in Pialassa Baiona (Italy), a lagoon characterized by mixing regimes dominated by the tide. The benthic community was isolated using cylinders 15,5Cm x 20Cm size. Hypoxic conditions were imposed by covering the treated cylinders with a black plastic bag while control cylinders were left uncovered. We created 4 different timing regimes of hypoxia by manipulating both the duration of hypoxia (4 or 8 days) as well as the ratio between the duration of subsequent periods of hypoxia and the duration of a normoxic period between subsequent hypoxic events (D4R3/2, D8R3/2). At the end of each experimental trial, the benthic communities within each pot were retrieved, sieved in the field and subsequent analyzed in the laboratory where organisms were identified and counted. Results showed that benthic organism were generally negatively affected by hypoxic stress events. As expected, longer hypoxic events caused a stronger decrease of benthic community abundance. When the hypoxic events were interrupted by the normoxic event there were two different results. If the hypoxic period was too long, the normoxic period didn’t cause a positive recovery effect, and further decline of the benthic community was observed. Conversely normoxia had positive effects if the period of hypoxia was short enough not to compromise the benthic community. This resulted in a statistically significant interaction between the tested factors Duration and Ratio. Amphipods were the most sensitive organisms to hypoxia. We conclude that the effects of hypoxia can be greatly relieved by short normoxic periods if they happen frequently enough.

Hypoxia is one of the most important and faster spreading threats to marine life and its occurrence has significantly increased in the last century. The effects of hypoxia on marine organisms and communities has mostly been studied in light of the intensity of the disturbance but not a lot of attention has been given to its interaction with other stressors and the timing of its appearance. In this thesis I started to explore these topics through laboratory and manipulative field experiments. I studied the interactive effects of thermal stress and hypoxia on a European native bivalve species (Cerastoderma edule; Linnaeus, 1758 ) and a non native one (Ruditapes philippinarum; Adams & Reeve, 1850) through a laboratory experiment performed in the Netherlands. The non native species displayed a greater tolerance to oxygen depletion than the native one. The first field experiment was performed in an Italian brackish coastal lagoon (Pialassa Baiona) and tested the effects of different timing regimes of hypoxia on the benthic community. It emerged that the main factor affecting the community is the duration of the hypoxia. The ability of the communities to recover after repeated hypoxic periods was explored in the second manipulative field experiment. We imposed three different timing regimes of hypoxia on sediment patches in Pialassa Baiona and we monitored the changes of both the benthic and the microbial communities after the disturbances. The preliminary analyses of the data from this last work suggest that the experimental manipulations caused limited detrimental effects on the communities. Overall this thesis work suggests that the duration of hypoxic events, their repetitive nature and the associated thermal stress are key factors in determining their effects on the communities and that management measures should point towards a reduction of the duration of the single hypoxic periods more than their frequency.

This dissertation addresses the timely questions of transitional justice (TJ) in the aftermath of revolutions against autocratic regimes, dealing with TJ as a constitutional arrangement through the lenses of constitutional economics. After an introductory chapter, chapter 2 deals with why nations rarely adopt meaningful TJ processes in the first place, it then explains the limitations of civil society as the arbiter, facilitator, and enforcer of TJ policies. Chapter 3 tackles the question of which mechanisms to choose? It uses the UN Guidelines on TJ that sets five principal TJ mechanisms. It provides a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of each mechanism and suggests policy implications accordingly. The CBA inspires chapter 4 analysis, suggesting a tradeoff between restrictive fair trial standards under constitutional laws and justice considerations. The tradeoff explains the suggested efficiency of the balanced TJ approaches that combine trials and amnesties. This approach is used for the case study analysis of TJ in Tunisia after the 2011 revolution in chapter 5. The chapter presents the first index of TJ mechanisms in Tunisia through novel data collected by the author. It shows an ultimate TJ design that ended with a modest harvest in the application. The lack of cooperation between the Tunisian parties, added to the absence of transparency in many TJ measures, threatens any possible positive outcomes of the partial TJ process. This Thesis studies the optimal control problem of single-arm and dual-arm serial robots to achieve the time-optimal handling of liquids and objects. The first topic deals with the planning of time-optimal anti-sloshing trajectories of an industrial robot carrying a cylindrical container filled with a liquid, considering 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional planar motions. A technique for the estimation of the sloshing height is presented, together with its extension to 3-dimensional motions. An experimental validation campaign is provided and discussed to assess the thoroughness of such a technique. As far as anti-sloshing trajectories are concerned, 2-dimensional paths are considered and, for each one of them, three constrained optimizations with different values of the sloshing-height thresholds are solved. Experimental results are presented to compare optimized and non-optimized motions. The second part focuses on the time-optimal trajectory planning for dual-arm object handling, employing two collaborative robots (cobots) and adopting an admittance-control strategy. The chosen manipulation approach, known as cooperative grasping, is based on unilateral contact between the cobots and the object, and it may lead to slipping during motion if an internal prestress along the contact-normal direction is not prescribed. Thus, a virtual penetration is considered, aimed at generating the necessary internal prestress. The stability of cooperative grasping is ensured as long as the exerted forces on the object remain inside the static-friction cone. Constrained-optimization problems are solved for 3-dimensional paths: the virtual penetration is chosen among the control inputs of the problem and friction-cone conditions are treated as inequality constraints. Also in this case experiments are presented in order to prove evidence of the firm handling of the object, even for fast motions.

There are many deformable objects such as papers, clothes, ropes in a person’s living space. To have a robot working in automating the daily tasks it is important that the robot works with these deformable objects. Manipulation of deformable objects is a challenging task for robots because these objects have an infinite-dimensional configuration space and are expensive to model, making real-time monitoring, planning and control difficult. It forms a particularly important field of robotics with relevant applications in different sectors such as medicine, food handling, manufacturing, and household chores. In this report, there is a clear review of the approaches used and are currently in use along with future developments to achieve this task. My research is more focused on the last 10 years, where I have systematically reviewed many articles to have a clear understanding of developments in this field. The main contribution is to show the whole landscape of this concept and provide a broad view of how it has evolved. I also explained my research methodology by following my analysis from the past to the present along with my thoughts for the future.

Pilomatrixoma, craniopharyngioma, and calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor are the main entities presenting ghost cells as an important histological feature, in spite their quite different clinical presentation; it seems that they share a common pathway in the formation of these cells. The aim of this study is to examine and compare the characteristics of ghost and other cells that form these lesions. Forty-three cases including 21 pilomatrixomas, 14 craniopharyngiomas, and eight calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors were evaluated by immunohistochemistry for cytokeratins, CD138, β-catenin, D2-40, Glut-1, FAS, CD10 and also by scanning electron microscopy. The CKs, CD138, β-catenin, Glut-1, FAS, and CD10 were more often expressed by transitional cells of craniopharyngioma and calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor, compared with pilomatrixoma. Basaloid cells of pilomatrixoma showed strong positivity for CD138 and CD10. Differences on expression pattern were identified in transitional and basal cells, as ghost cells were negative for most antibodies used, except by low expression for cytokeratins. By scanning electron microscopy, the morphology of ghost cells were similar in their fibrillar cytoplasm, but their pattern varied from sheets in pilomatrixoma to small clusters in craniopharyngioma and calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor. Mechanisms involved in formation of ghost cells are unknown, but probably they follow different pathways as protein expression in the basal/transitional cells was not uniform in the three tumors studied.

The purpose of this study was to compare the behavior of full-term small-for-gestational age (SGA) with full-term appropriate-for gestational age (AGA) infants in the first year of life. We prospectively evaluated 68 infants in the 2nd month, 67 in the 6th month and 69 in the 12th month. The Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II were used, with emphasis on the Behavior Rating Scale (BRS). The groups were similar concerning the item interest in test materials and stimuli; there was a trend toward differences in the items negative affect, hypersensitivity to test materials and adaptation to change in test materials. The mean of Raw Score was significantly lower for the SGA group in the items predominant state, liability of state of arousal, positive affect, soothability when upset, energy, exploration of objects and surroundings, orientation toward examiner. A lower BRS score was associated with the SGA group in the 2nd month.

To evaluate the use of optical and nonoptical aids during reading and writing activities in individuals with acquired low vision. This study was performed using descriptive and cross-sectional surveys. The data collection instrument was created with structured questions that were developed from an exploratory study and a previous test based on interviews, and it evaluated the following variables: personal characteristics, use of optical and nonoptical aids, and activities that required the use of optical and nonoptical aids. The study population included 30 subjects with acquired low vision and visual acuities of 20/200-20/400. Most subjects reported the use of some optical aids (60.0%). Of these 60.0%, the majority (83.3%) cited spectacles as the most widely used optical aid. The majority (63.3%) of subjects also reported the use of nonoptical aids, the most frequent ones being letter magnification (68.4%), followed by bringing the objects closer to the eyes (57.8%). Subjects often used more than one nonoptical aid. The majority of participants reported the use of optical and nonoptical aids during reading activities, highlighting the use of spectacles, magnifying glasses, and letter magnification; however, even after the use of these aids, we found that the subjects often needed to read the text more than once to understand it. During writing activities, all subjects reported the use of optical aids, while most stated that they did not use nonoptical aids for such activities.

Several medical and dental schools have described their experience in the transition from conventional to digital microscopy in the teaching of general pathology and histology disciplines; however, this transitional process has scarcely been reported in the teaching of oral pathology. Therefore, the objective of the current study is to report the transition from conventional glass slide to virtual microscopy in oral pathology teaching, a unique experience in Latin America. An Aperio ScanScope® scanner was used to digitalize histological slides used in practical lectures of oral pathology. The challenges and benefits observed by the group of Professors from the Piracicaba Dental School (Brazil) are described and a questionnaire to evaluate the students' compliance to this new methodology was applied. An improvement in the classes was described by the Professors who mainly dealt with questions related to pathological changes instead of technical problems; also, a higher interaction with the students was described. The simplicity of the software used and the high quality of the virtual slides, requiring a smaller time to identify microscopic structures, were considered important for a better teaching process. Virtual microscopy used to teach oral pathology represents a useful educational methodology, with an excellent compliance of the dental students.

The purpose of this work is to study theoretically stereoelectronic aspects of the interaction between heme and artemisinin in the transitional heme-artemisinin complex. Through semi-empirical calculations using the PM3 method, the potential energy barrier of artemisinin rotation relative to heme in the heme-artemisinin complex was studied in vacuum and in the partially solvated state. The minimum heat of formation obtained for the complex with and without water molecules is -702.39 and -100.86 kcal mol-1, respectively, which corresponds to the dihedral angle C-Fe-O1-O2 of 43.93º and 51.90º around the iron-oxygen O1 bond, respectively. The water molecules bind to heme via 13 hydrogen bonds and O-H O and 6 C-H O interactions, which accounts for -67.23 kcal mol-1. It is observed that the inclusion of water molecules does not affect significantly the stability of the heme-artemisinin complex.

Concept formation depends on language and thought, that promote the integration of information coming from the senses. It is postulated that changes in the person, the objects and events to be known suggest flexible models of concept teaching. It is assumed that the same considerations apply to teaching concepts to blind pupils. Specificities of this process are discussed, including the role of touch as resource, although not as a direct substitute to vision, and the notion of representation as a basis for the elaboration of pedagogical resources for the blind student.

This article reports the results from the research work which objects the critical and profound study about the ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) in the courses for teachers' development in College Education, under its various dimensions - social, cultural, pedagogical, biological. The investigation focused on five adults with diagnosis for ADHD. The methodology used was the Case Study, developed from the Oral History as a source of data. The results that were obtained suggest that the study, proposed in the research, may contribute significantly for the teachers to know determining factors of the school performance of students with this disorder, as well as to guide them in the search of partnership with other professionals - doctors and psychologists, for example - when such partnership becomes necessary.
