[spa] El principal objetivo de este artículo se centra en analizar los orígenes del Estado de Bienestar en España a partir del marco teórico elaborado por Peter Lindert. Con este fin, se ofrece un análisis econométrico de los factores que determinaron la evolución del gasto social público en este país entre 1880 y 1960. Utilizando nueva evidencia cuantitativa, se construyó un panel de datos por quinquenios con el porcentaje de gasto social respecto al PIB desagregado en tres partidas: sanidad, seguridad social y beneficencia. El análisis permite insertar el caso español en el debate internacional y los resultados revelan interesantes singularidades de este país.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the contribution of modifiable risk factors to social inequalities in the incidence of type 2 diabetes when these factors are measured at study baseline or repeatedly over follow-up and when long term exposure is accounted for. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study with risk factors (health behaviours (smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, and physical activity), body mass index, and biological risk markers (systolic blood pressure, triglycerides and high density lipoprotein cholesterol)) measured four times and diabetes status assessed seven times between 1991-93 and 2007-09. SETTING: Civil service departments in London (Whitehall II study). PARTICIPANTS: 7237 adults without diabetes (mean age 49.4 years; 2196 women). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Incidence of type 2 diabetes and contribution of risk factors to its association with socioeconomic status. RESULTS: Over a mean follow-up of 14.2 years, 818 incident cases of diabetes were identified. Participants in the lowest occupational category had a 1.86-fold (hazard ratio 1.86, 95% confidence interval 1.48 to 2.32) greater risk of developing diabetes relative to those in the highest occupational category. Health behaviours and body mass index explained 33% (-1% to 78%) of this socioeconomic differential when risk factors were assessed at study baseline (attenuation of hazard ratio from 1.86 to 1.51), 36% (22% to 66%) when they were assessed repeatedly over the follow-up (attenuated hazard ratio 1.48), and 45% (28% to 75%) when long term exposure over the follow-up was accounted for (attenuated hazard ratio 1.41). With additional adjustment for biological risk markers, a total of 53% (29% to 88%) of the socioeconomic differential was explained (attenuated hazard ratio 1.35, 1.05 to 1.72). CONCLUSIONS: Modifiable risk factors such as health behaviours and obesity, when measured repeatedly over time, explain almost half of the social inequalities in incidence of type 2 diabetes. This is more than was seen in previous studies based on single measurement of risk factors.

La revolución que significó Internet a finales del siglo XX supone una oportunidad inmensa para el mundo corporativo. Con la aparición del Social Media y, en concreto, de las redes sociales, se han abierto un sinfín de nuevas oportunidades.No existe ningún otro invento que haya penetrado con tanta facilidad como lo han hecho estas plataformas; es el momento de que las empresas saquen provecho de ello.El objetivo principal de este proyecto consiste en identificar los beneficios potenciales para las empresas que conlleva actuar a través del Social Media. No contentos con eso, nos disponemos a mostrar las grandes razones por las que actuar: la posibilidad deidentificar las necesidades de tu público objetivo, huecos en el mercado y, por consiguiente, conseguir una ventaja competitiva clave en tu sector. ¿Cómo? La clave está en saber gestionar grandes volúmenes de información aplicando soluciones de inteligencia competitiva.Teniendo en cuenta que el proyecto gira entorno al Social Media, la estructura del mismo está dividida en dos grandes partes: en primer lugar estudiamos las claves de la investigación de mercados actual y, seguidamente, utilizamos una perspectiva más corporativa para mostrar las principales inquietudes que surgen en las empresas.Mediante ejemplos de casos prácticos muy relevantes, estudios que aporten datos clave y, sobre todo, las opiniones de profesionales del sector dentro y fuera de España, seremos capaces de deducir la importancia que tiene este terreno, así como el largo camino que nos queda a todos por delante.

Purpose: To investigate the molecular involvement of PTEN, a tumor suppressor gene, in a case of cellular pigmented choroidal Schwannoma in a patient with hamartomatous syndrome due to heterozygous PTEN germline mutation. Methods: Histopathological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopy analyses were performed by standard procedures. Paraffin-embedded samples of normal and tumor eye tissues were collected and DNA was extracted. A 145 bp region flanking the heterozygous c.406T>C mutation in exon 5 of PTEN was amplified by PCR and sequenced. To evaluate the allelic status of PTEN in the tumor sample, we cloned different PCR products in E. coli using a TA cloning procedure. Results: Histopathology demonstrated a posterior choroidal mass measuring 1.3 x 1.6 x 1.4 cm. The tumor was composed by fascicles of spindle cells with wavy cytoplasm. No Verrocay bodies could be identified. Scattered histiocytes with clear cytoplasm were present. By immunohistochemistry, the cells were expressing S100 and focally Melan A proteins. Pericellular type IV collagen could be demonstrated. Interlacing cytoplasmic processes covered by thick basement membrane could be found by electron microscopy as well as few premelanosomes. Moderate PTEN expression by immunohistochemistry was identified in some cells. As expected, the germline mutation could be detected by DNA sequencing in both the paraffin-embedded normal and tumor eye tissues. Analysis of 33 E. coli colonies bearing clones from the tumor eye tissue DNA surprisingly revealed that most of them contained the PTEN wild-type allele (29 vs. 4, Fisher's test p-value = 0.002). Conclusions: This is the first reported case of choroidal cellular Schwannoma arising in the context of a PTEN hamartomatous syndrome. Allelic analysis of PTEN in the tumor suggests a statistically-significant partial loss of heterozygozity in favor of the wild-type allele. Our findings are in clear contrast with what is usually observed in cancer tissues, for which mutated alleles of tumor suppressor genes are usually brought to homozygosity. Similar results were previously reported in human non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, displaying an overexpression of the wild-type form of the tumor suppressor gene p53. We are in the process of investigating additional DNA derived from other fresh and paraffin-embedded tissues from the patient, in order to gain insights on the molecular bases of PTEN involvement in this rare choroidal Schwannoma.

Astract: The aim of this thesis was to investigate how the presence of multiple queens (polygyny) affects social organization in colonies of the ant Formica exsecta. This is important because polygyny results in reduced relatedness among colony members and therefore reflects a potential paradox for altruistic cooperation being explained by inclusive fitness theory. The reason for this is that workers in polygynous colonies rear no longer only their siblings (high inclusive fitness gain) but also more distantly ox even unrelated brood (low or no inclusive fitness gain). All research projects conducted in this thesis are novel and significant contributions to the understanding of the social evolution of insect societies. We used a mixture of experimental and observational methodologies in laboratory and field colonies of F. exsecta to examine four important aspects of social life that are impacted by polygyny. First, we investigated the influence of queen number on colony sex allocation and found that the number of queens present in a colony significantly affects colony sex ratio investment. The data were consistent with the queen-replenishment hypothesis, which is based on the observation that newly mated queens are often recruited back to their parental nest. According to this theory, colonies containing many queens should only produce males due to local resource competition (i.e. related queens compete for common resources), whereas colonies hosting few queens benefit most from producing new queens to ensure colony survival. Second, we examined how reproduction is partitioned among nestmate queens. We detected a novel pattern of reproductive partitioning whereby a high proportion of queens were completely specialized in the production of only a subset of offspring classes produced within a colony, which might translate into great differences in reproductive success between queens. Third, we could demonstrate that F. exsecta workers indiscriminately reared highly related and unrelated brood although such nepotistic behaviour (preferential rearing of relatives) would be predicted by inclusive fitness theory. The absence of nepotism is probably best explained by its negative effects on overall colony efficiency. Finally, we conducted a detailed population genetic analysis, which revealed that the genetic population structure is different for queens and workers. Our data were best explained with queens forming family-based groups (multicolonial population structure), whereas workers from several nests seemed to be grouped into larger unites (unicolonial population structure) with workers moving freely between neighbouring nests. Altogether, the presented work significantly increased our understanding of the complex organization of polygynous social insect colonies and shows how an important life history trait such as queen number affects social organization at various levels. Résumé: Le but de cette thèse était d'étudier comment la présence de plusieurs reines par colonie (polygynie) influence la vie sociale chez la fourmi Formica exsecta. Ce sujet est important parce que la polygynie chez les insectes sociaux présente un passible paradoxe au niveau de la théorie du "fitness inclusive". Ce paradoxe est basé sur le fait que les ouvrières n'élèvent plus uniquement leurs frères et soeurs (gain de "fitness inclusive" maximale), mais également des individus moins ou pas du tout apparentés (gain de "fitness inclusive" réduit ou absent). Tous les projets de recherche présentés au cours de cette thèse apportent une meilleure compréhension et connaissance au niveau de l'organisation des colonies chez les insectes sociaux. Nous avons employé des méthodes d'observation et de laboratoire afin de mettre en évidence des aspects importants de la vie sociale chez les fourmis influencés par la polygynie. Quatre aspects ont été caractérisés : (1) l'influence du nombre de reines sur le sexe ratio produit par la colonie. Nous avons démontré que les colonies contenant beaucoup de reines produisaient rarement des reines tandis que les colonies contenant peu de reines souvent investissaient beaucoup de ressources dans la production des reines. Ces résultats sont en accord avec la "queen-replenishment hypothesis" qui est basé sur l'observation que les nouvelles reines sont recrutées dans la colonie où elles étaient nées. Cette hypothèse postule que la production des reines est défavorable dans les colonies contenant beaucoup de reines, parce que ces reines apparentées, rentrent en compétition pour des ressources communes. Au contraire, la production des reines est favorable dans des colonies contenant peu de reines afin d'assurer la survie de la colonie ; (2) comment les reines dans une colonie répartissent leur reproduction. Nous avons mis en évidence un nouveau pattern de cette répartition où une grande proportion de reines est complètement spécialisée dans la production d'un seul type de couvain ce qui probablement aboutit à des différences significatives entre reines dans le succès reproducteur ; (3) la capacité des ouvrières à discriminer un couvain de soeur d'un couvain non apparenté. Les résultats ont montré que les ouvrières ne font pas de discrimination entre le couvain de soeur et le couvain non apparenté ce qui n'est pas en accord avec la théorie de la "fitness inclusive". Cette absence de discrimination est probablement due à des effets négatifs comme par exemple la diminution de la production du couvain; (4) la structure génétique d'une population de F. exsecta. Nous avons mis en évidence que la structure génétique entre des groupes de reines est significativement différente de la structure génétique entre des groupes d'ouvrières. Les données suggèrent que les reines forment des groupes basés sur une structure familiale tandis que les ouvrières sont groupées dans des unités plus grandes.

When individuals learn by trial-and-error, they perform randomly chosen actions and then reinforce those actions that led to a high payoff. However, individuals do not always have to physically perform an action in order to evaluate its consequences. Rather, they may be able to mentally simulate actions and their consequences without actually performing them. Such fictitious learners can select actions with high payoffs without making long chains of trial-and-error learning. Here, we analyze the evolution of an n-dimensional cultural trait (or artifact) by learning, in a payoff landscape with a single optimum. We derive the stochastic learning dynamics of the distance to the optimum in trait space when choice between alternative artifacts follows the standard logit choice rule. We show that for both trial-and-error and fictitious learners, the learning dynamics stabilize at an approximate distance of root n/(2 lambda(e)) away from the optimum, where lambda(e) is an effective learning performance parameter depending on the learning rule under scrutiny. Individual learners are thus unlikely to reach the optimum when traits are complex (n large), and so face a barrier to further improvement of the artifact. We show, however, that this barrier can be significantly reduced in a large population of learners performing payoff-biased social learning, in which case lambda(e) becomes proportional to population size. Overall, our results illustrate the effects of errors in learning, levels of cognition, and population size for the evolution of complex cultural traits. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
