Education and Development : A spatial-econometric approach on spatial change and permanence in southern Brazil

The Brazilian state of Paraná exhibits a violent geography of inequality and duality, hosting both the most developed city in the country, internationally recognized by its urban and environmental innovations, and southern Brazil’s most concentrated cluster of poverty and underdevelopment. Over the course of the past decades, the state underwent a major economic transformation, modernizing and increasing its industrial structure and shifting to the service sector with a larger participation of the knowledge economy. This study is concerned on the interplay between formal education and socioeconomic development during this process, and above all its spatial character. It attempts make sense of the rich literature on education and growth and/or development, discussing it through the lenses of human geography and planning. In order for the analysis to be possible, this study created a consistent database of municipal scores of education over the course of 40 years, dealing with changing census methodologies and municipal boundaries. Making use of modern exploratory spatial data analysis combined with spatial regressions, the study identifies a clustered, time-persistent interplay between education and development that is stronger for low and basic levels of education. Moreover, it provides evidence that not only education is a predictor of future development, but also that analyses of this kind must take into consideration spatial autocorrelation in order to be accurate.

Occupational safety and health in the screening of municipal solid waste in Coop Cidade Limpa of Santo André

This paper presents exploratory search held in cooperative Coop Cidade Limpa, Santo André – São Paulo. It is aimed at verifying risks of accidents and occupational diseases in the screening of Municipal Solid Waste. The study started from the following question: What are the risks posed to workers in the sorting of waste in cooperatives? It was performed through on-site observation, accompanied by interviews with the members in their work activities. The data were used to describe the risks of accidents and industrial diseases. It demonstrated the awareness of people regarding the risks in dealing with waste and cooperative processes.

Rising longevity, education, savings, and growth

This paper examines the impact of declines in adult mortality on growth in an overlapping generations model. With public education and imperfect annuity markets, a decline in mortality affects growth through three channels. First, it raises the saving rate and thereby increases the rate of physical capital accumulation. Second, it reduces accidental bequests, lowers investment, and thereby lowers the rate of physical capital accumulation. Third, it may lead the median voter to increase the tax rate for public education initially but lower the tax rate in a later stage. Starting from a high mortality rate as found in many Third World populations, the net effect of a decline in mortality is to raise the growth rate. However, starting from a low mortality rate such as is found in most industrial populations, the net effect of a further decline in mortality is to reduce the growth rate. Tourists and beach safety in Queensland, Australia

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) is a leading authority on beach safety, providing patrol, education, and rescue services to both tourists and local residents along the coast of Queensland, Australia. SLSQ recognizes that tourists are a target group requiring special attention due to their unfamiliarity with ocean beaches and surfing activities, and in some cases having the additional challenge of poor swimming skills, language barriers, and disorientation in a foreign vacation environment. This article describes SLSQ initiatives to provide beach safety for tourists through a focus on service delivery and partnerships with the tourism industry and relevant government agencies. The positive involvement of SLSQ in tourism is a model for other coastal destinations, given that drowning is the second most frequent cause of injury death among international travelers.
