Local texture and microstructure was investigated to study the deformation mechanisms during equal channel angular extrusion of a high purity nickel single crystal of initial cube orientation. A detailed texture and microstructure analysis by various diffraction techniques revealed the complexity of the deformation patterns in different locations of the billet. A modeling approach, taking into account slip system activity, was used to interpret the development of this heterogeneous deformation.

The solid-state transformation behaviour of the icosahedral phase in rapidly solidified Al-20 at.% Mn has been investigated by in situ heating experiments in the transmission electron microscope. As-rapidly-solidified Al-20 at.% Mn consists mainly of a dendritic icosahedral phase, with a small amount of interdendritic f.c.c. agr-Al. During subsequent heat treatment at temperatures below about 500°C, the dendritic icosahedral phase grows and consumes the interdendritic agr-Al. At about 500°C the decagonal phase nucleates near icosahedral dendrite and grain boundaries and then grows into the icosahedral matrix by lateral motion of ledges 10-20 nm high across facet planes normal to the twofold symmetry axes. At about 600°C the decagonal phase transforms into a crystalline phase. The present study suggests that solid-state decomposition of the icosahedral phase is the mechanism of decagonal phase formation in as-rapidly-solidified Al-Mn alloys.

The influence of the pedogenic and climatic contexts on the formation and preservation of pedogenic carbonates in a climosequence in the Western Ghats (Karnataka Plateau, South West India) has been studied. Along the climosequence, the current mean annual rainfall (MAR) varies within a 80 km transect from 6000 mm at the edge of the Plateau to 500 mm inland. Pedogenic carbonates occur in the MAR range of 500-1200 mm. In the semi-arid zone (MAR: 500-900 mm), carbonates occur (i) as rhick hardpan calcretes on pediment slopes and (ii) as nodular horizons in polygenic black soils (i.e. vertisols). In the sub-humid zone (MAR: 900-1500 mm), pedogenic carbonates are disseminated in the black soil matrices either as loose, irregular and friable nodules of millimetric size or as indurated botryoidal nodules of centimetric to pluricentimetric size. They also occur at the top layers of the saprolite either as disseminated pluricentimetric indurated nodules or carbonate-cemented lumps of centimetric to decimetric size. Chemical and isotopic (Sr-87/Sr-86) compositions of the carbonate fraction were determined after leaching with 0.25 N HCl. The corresponding residual fractions containing both primary minerals and authigenic clays were digested separately and analyzed. The trend defined by the Sr-87/Sr-86 signatures of both labile carbonate fractions and corresponding residual fractions indicates that a part of the labile carbonate fraction is genetically linked to the local soil composition. Considering the residual fraction of each sample as the most likely lithogenic source of Ca in carbonates, it is estimated that from 24% to 82% (55% on average) of Ca is derived from local bedrock weathering, leading to a consumption of an equivalent proportion of atmospheric CO2. These values indicate that climatic conditions were humid enough to allow silicate weathering: MAR at the time of carbonate formation likely ranged from 400 to 700 mm, which is 2- to 3-fold less than the current MAR at these locations. The Sr, U and Mg contents and the (U-234/U-238) activity ratio in the labile carbonate fraction help to understand the conditions of carbonate formation. The relatively high concentrations of Sr, U and Mg in black soil carbonates may indicate fast growth and accumulation compared to carbonates in saprolite, possibly due to a better confinement of the pore waters which is supported by their high (U-234/U-238) signatures, and/or to higher content of dissolved carbonates in the pore waters. The occurrence of Ce, Mn and Fe oxides in the cracks of carbonate reflects the existence of relatively humid periods after carbonate formation. The carbonate ages determined by the U-Th method range from 1.33 +/- 0.84 kyr to 7.5 +/- 2.7 kyr and to a cluster of five ages around 20 kyr, i.e. the Last Glacial Maximum period. The young occurrences are only located in the black soils, which therefore constitute sensitive environments for trapping and retaining atmospheric CO2 even on short time scales. The maximum age of carbonates depends on their location in the climatic gradient: from about 20 kyr for centimetric nodules at Mule Hole (MAR = 1100 mm/yr) to 200 kyr for the calcrete at Gundlupet (MAR = 700 mm/yr, Durand et al., 2007). The intensity of rainfall during wet periods would indeed control the lifetime of pedogenic carbonates and thus the duration of inorganic carbon storage in soils. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The a.c. conductivity of CaF2 samples containing a fine dispersion of CaO particles has been measured in the temperature range 630 to 1100 K. The conductivity of the dispersed solid electrolyte is two orders of magnitude higher than that for pure polycrystalline CaF2 in the middle of the temperature range. Transport measurements on pure single crystals of CaF2 and polycrystalline samples, with and without CaO dispersion, using Fe+FeO and pure Fe as electrodes, clearly indicate that fluorine ions are the only migrating ionic species with a transport number of almost unity, contrary to the suggestion of Chou and Rapp [1, 2]. The enhanced conductivity of the dispersed solid electrolyte probably arises from two effects. A small solubility of oxygen in CaF2 results in an increase in the fluorine vacancy concentration and conductivity. Adsorption of fluorine ions on the surface of the dispersed particles of CaO results in a space charge region around each particle with enhanced conductivity. Measurements on a galvanic cell incorporating CaF2 as the solid electrolyte and oxide electrodes show that the e.m.f. is a function of the activity of CaO at the electrode/electrolyte interface. The response to an oxygen potential gradient is, therefore, through an exchange reaction, which establishes an equivalent fluorine potential at the electrode/electrolyte interface.

The basic principles of operation of gas sensors based on solid-state galvanic cells are described. The polarisation of the electrodes can be minimised by the use of point electrodes made of the solid electrolyte, the use of a reference system with chemical potential close to that of the sample system and the use of graded condensed phase reference electrodes. Factors affecting the speed of response of galvanic sensors in equilibrium and non-equilibrium gas mixtures are considered with reference to products of combustion of fossil fuels. An expression for the emf of non-isothermal galvanic sensors and the criterion for the design of temperature compensated reference electrodes for non-isothermal galvanic sensors are briefly outlined. Non-isothermal sensors are useful for the continuous monitoring of concentrations or chemical potentials in reactive systems at high temperatures. Sensors for oxygen, carbon, and alloying elements (Zn and Si) in liquid metals and alloys are discussed. The use of auxiliary electrodes permits the detection of chemical species in the gas phase which are not mobile in the solid electrolyte. Finally, the cause of common errors in galvanic measurements, and tests for correct functioning of galvanic sensors are given. 60 ref.--AA

Separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite from the bulk concentrate of a low grade molybdenite ore from Chintamani, Kolar District, Karnataka, has been attempted in a modified Hallimond tube microflotation set-up. The flotation parameters studied are, sodium sulphide and potassium cyanide as depressants for chalcopyrite, pH, depressant concentration, steaming time and time of flotation. Selectivity index was used as a separation parameter. Steaming for 25 min followed by flotation for 7 min at 80 mg/l concentration of potassium cyanide and pH 9 gave the best results for separation of molybdenite. 19 ref.--AA

The influence of particulate additions of alumina on the flexural properties of glass-fabric/epoxy composites was studied. The additions improved translaminar flexural strength, while decreasing interlaminar strength. The translaminar bending modulus showed an increasing trend whereas its interlaminar value showed a decrease, up to additions of 3 vol%. The mechanisms of deformation and the fracture features have been discussed with the aid of scanning electron microscopy.

Attempts have been made to evaluate the thermal stability of rare earth oxide face coats against liquid titanium. Determination of microhardness profiles and concentration profiles of oxygen and metallic constituents of oxide in investment cast titanium rods has allowed grActation of relative stability of rare earth oxides. The relative stability of evaluated oxides in the order of increasing stability follows the sequence CeO2 — ZrO2 — Gd2O3 — didymium oxide — Sm2O3 —Nd2O3 — Y2O3. The grading does not follow the free energy data of the formation of these oxides. A better correlation with the experimental observations is obtained when the solubility of the metallic species in titanium is also taken into consideration.

An efficient algorithm within the finite deformation framework is developed for finite element implementation of a recently proposed isotropic, Mohr-Coulomb type material model, which captures the elastic-viscoplastic, pressure sensitive and plastically dilatant response of bulk metallic glasses. The constitutive equations are first reformulated and implemented using an implicit numerical integration procedure based on the backward Euler method. The resulting system of nonlinear algebraic equations is solved by the Newton-Raphson procedure. This is achieved by developing the principal space return mapping technique for the present model which involves simultaneous shearing and dilatation on multiple potential slip systems. The complete stress update algorithm is presented and the expressions for viscoplastic consistent tangent moduli are derived. The stress update scheme and the viscoplastic consistent tangent are implemented in the commercial finite element code ABAQUS/Standard. The accuracy and performance of the numerical implementation are verified by considering several benchmark examples, which includes a simulation of multiple shear bands in a 3D prismatic bar under uniaxial compression.

Phase relations in the system CaO-Fe2O3-Y2O3 in air (P-O2/P-o = 0.21) were explored by equilibrating samples representing eleven compositions in the ternary at 1273 K, followed by quenching to room temperature and phase identification using XRD. Limited mutual solubility was observed between YFeO3 and Ca2Fe2O5. No quaternary oxide was identified. An isothermal section of the phase diagram at 1273 K was constructed from the results. Five three-phase regions and four extended two-phase regions were observed. The extended two-phase regions arise from the limited solid solutions based on the ternary oxides YFeO3 and Ca2Fe2O5. Activities of CaO, Fe2O3 and Y2O3 in the three-phase fields were computed using recently measured thermodynamic data on the ternary oxides. The experimental phase diagram is consistent with thermodynamic data. The computed activities of CaO indicate that compositions of CaO-doped YFeO3 exhibiting good electrical conductivity are not compatible with zirconia-based electrolytes; CaO will react with ZrO2 to form CaZrO3.
