Aim: Functional subjective evaluation through questionnaire is fundamental, but not often realized in patients with back complaints, notably because of lack of validated tools, in accordance with recognized psychometric criteria. The Spinal Function Sort (SFS), developed according to actual standards, was only validated in English. The aim of this study is to translate, adapt and validate the French and German version of the SFS.Method and material: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation were performed following the methodology proposed by the American Association of Orthopedist Surgeon. A total of 344 patients, presenting varied back complaints (especially degenerative and traumatic), took part in this study in a tertiary French- (n=87; mean age 44y; 17 women) and German-speaking (n=257; mean age 41y; 53 women) center. Test-retest reliability was quantified using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and construct validity was assessed by estimating the Pearson's correlation with the SF-36 physical and mental scales, the Visual Analogue Scale for Pain Intensity (VAS), and subscales of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).Results: Respectively for the French and German version, ICC were 0.98 and 0.94. Correlations 0.63 and 0.67 with the SF-36 Physical Functioning subscale; 0.60 and 0.52 with the SF-36 Physical Summary Scale ; -0.33 and -0.51 with the VAS ; -0.08 and 0.25 with the SF-36 Mental Health scale; 0.01 and 0.28 with the SF-36 Mental Summary Scale; -0.26 and -0.42 with the HADS depression; -0.17 and -0.45 with the HADS anxiety.Discussion: For both the French and German version of the SFS, the reliability was excellent. Convergent construct validity with SF-36 physical scales is good, moderated with the VAS. We find out a low correlation with SF-36 mental scales (divergent construct validity). We find out a low correlation with HADS subscales in the French version, and a moderate one in the German version. Selection bias, chronicity of the complaints, as well as cultural differences could explain these results. In conclusion, both the French and German version of the SFS are valid and reliable for evaluation of perceived functional capacity for patients with back complaints.

El Camí de Cavalls és un element característic amb una importància històrica, cultural i recreativa considerable a Menorca. Aquesta illa va ser declarada Reserva de la Biosfera per l UNESCO l’any 1993; com a conseqüència, a l’any 2000 es va implantar el Pla Especial del Camí de Cavalls amb diversos objectius: definir les característiques del Camí i els seus instruments de gestió i aplicació; implantar mecanismes i normes que permetin l’ús públic que garanteixin la seva protecció i conservació; i finalment definir polítiques de sostenibilitat i conscienciació ambiental. Al llarg dels anys, la seva gestió ha permès que el Camí presenti una millora del seu estat de conservació i fer-ne un ús favorable a nivell socioambiental. L’any 2008 es va realitzar una diagnosi del Sector nord-est de la illa, aplicant-ne diversos indicadors per tal de determinar l’estat del Cam,í coincidint amb l’aplicació dels criteris plantejats pel Pla Especial del 2000 (Diagnosi Socioambiental del Camí de Cavalls de Menorca 2008). En aquest document s’explica la realització de la segona diagnosi, a partir del protocol dissenyat cinc anys abans, per tal de valorar l’estat actual del Camí i observar i definir les variacions que s’han produït en aquest període de temps. Els resultats mostren una tendència global positiva de millora del Camí, tal i com es planteja en la hipòtesis del projecte, tot i presentar-se una sèrie d’inconvenients a l’hora d’aplicar i valorar qualitativament els indicadors utilitzats. L’estudi s’ha realitzat amb la col·laboració dels centres de estudis ambientals de l’ICTA (Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) amb seu a la UAB (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), i l’OBSAM (Observatori Socioambiental de Menorca) amb seu a l’IME (Institut Menorquí d’Estudis).

Senate File 2355, 85th General Assembly, states the Iowa Department of Transportation shall submit annual reports regarding the implementation of efficiency measures identified in the “Road Use Tax Fund Efficiency Report,” January 2012. This report shall provide details of activities undertaken in the previous year relating to one-time and long-term program efficiencies and partnership efficiencies. Issues to be covered in the reports shall include but are not limited to savings realized from the implementation of particular efficiency measures; updates concerning measures that have not been implemented; efforts involving cities, counties, other jurisdictions, or stakeholder interest groups; any new efficiency measures identified or undertaken; and identification of any legislative action that may be required to achieve efficiencies.

The urban portion of the Kettle Creek Watershed is experiencing severe bank and bed erosion due to unchecked stormwater runoff and a steep stream slope. The Kettle Creek Urban Watershed Improvement Project will reduce sediment input to the stream by stabilizing the steam bed with rock-riffle stream stabilization structures and stream bank improvements at select locations. Other components of the watershed are being addressed for excess sediment loads including the agricultural portion by constructing sediment detention basins, and the urban stormwater component by separating the existing combined sanitary and stormwater systems. The urban stream erosion factor represents the weak link in the current watershed impairment. The benefits of the all the watershed improvements components will be realized by all the residents of Kettle Creek Watershed as well as the citizens of Ottumwa.

We modelled the future distribution in 2050 of 975 endemic plant species in southern Africa distributed among seven life forms, including new methodological insights improving the accuracy and ecological realism of predictions of global changes studies by: (i) using only endemic species as a way to capture the full realized niche of species, (ii) considering the direct impact of human pressure on landscape and biodiversity jointly with climate, and (iii) taking species' migration into account. Our analysis shows important promises for predicting the impacts of climate change in conjunction with land transformation. We have shown that the endemic flora of Southern Africa on average decreases with 41% in species richness among habitats and with 39% on species distribution range for the most optimistic scenario. We also compared the patterns of species' sensitivity with global change across life forms, using ecological and geographic characteristics of species. We demonstrate here that species and life form vulnerability to global changes can be partly explained according to species' (i) geographical distribution along climatic and biogeographic gradients, like climate anomalies, (ii) niche breadth or (iii) proximity to barrier preventing migration. Our results confirm that the sensitivity of a given species to global environmental changes depends upon its geographical distribution and ecological proprieties, and makes it possible to estimate a priori its potential sensitivity to these changes.

Topological order has proven a useful concept to describe quantum phase transitions which are not captured by the Ginzburg-Landau type of symmetry-breaking order. However, lacking a local order parameter, topological order is hard to detect. One way to detect it is via direct observation of anyonic properties of excitations which are usually discussed in the thermodynamic limit, but so far has not been realized in macroscopic quantum Hall samples. Here we consider a system of few interacting bosons subjected to the lowest Landau level by a gauge potential, and theoretically investigate vortex excitations in order to identify topological properties of different ground states. Our investigation demonstrates that even in surprisingly small systems anyonic properties are able to characterize the topological order. In addition, focusing on a system in the Laughlin state, we study the robustness of its anyonic behavior in the presence of tunable finite-range interactions acting as a perturbation. A clear signal of a transition to a different state is reflected by the system's anyonic properties.

Natural selection may favor two very different types of social behaviors that have costs in vital rates (fecundity and/or survival) to the actor: helping behaviors, which increase the vital rates of recipients, and harming behaviors, which reduce the vital rates of recipients. Although social evolutionary theory has mainly dealt with helping behaviors, competition for limited resources creates ecological conditions in which an actor may benefit from expressing behaviors that reduce the vital rates of neighbors. This may occur if the reduction in vital rates decreases the intensity of competition experienced by the actor or that experienced by its offspring. Here, we explore the joint evolution of neutral recognition markers and marker-based costly conditional harming whereby actors express harming, conditional on actor and recipient bearing different conspicuous markers. We do so for two complementary demographic scenarios: finite panmictic and infinite structured populations. We find that marker-based conditional harming can evolve under a large range of recombination rates and group sizes under both finite panmictic and infinite structured populations. A direct comparison with results for the evolution of marker-based conditional helping reveals that, if everything else is equal, marker-based conditional harming is often more likely to evolve than marker-based conditional helping.

INTRODUCTION: In alpine skiing, chronometry analysis is currently the most common tool to assess performance. It is widely used to rank competitors during races, as well as to manage athletes training and to evaluate material. Usually, this measurement is accurately realized using timing cells. Nevertheless, these devices are too complex and expensive to allow chronometry of every gates crossing. On the other side, differential GPS can be used for measuring gate crossing time (Waegli et al). However, this is complex (e.g. recording gate position with GPS) and mainly used in research applications. The aim of the study was to propose a wearable system to time gates crossing during alpine skiing slalom (SL), which is suitable for routine uses. METHODS: The proposed system was composed of a 3D accelerometer (ADXL320®, Analog Device, USA) placed at the sacrum of the athlete, a matrix of force sensors (Flexiforce®, Tekscan, USA) fixed on the right shin guard and a data logger (Physilog®, BioAGM, Switzerland). The sensors were sampled at 500 Hz. The crossing time were calculated in two phases. First, the accelerometer was used to detect the curves by considering the maximum of the mediolateral peak acceleration. Then, the force sensors were used to detect the impacts with the gates by considering maximum force variation. In case of non impact, the detection was realized based on the acceleration and features measured at the other gates. In order to assess the efficiency of the system, two different SL were monitored twice for two world cup level skiers, a male SL expert and a female downhill expert. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The combination of the accelerometer and force sensors allowed to clearly identify the gate crossing times. When comparing the runs of the SL expert and the downhill expert, we noticed that the SL expert was faster. For example for the first SL, the overall difference between the best run of each athlete was of 5.47s. At each gate, the SL expert increased the time difference slower at the beginning (0.27s/gate) than at the end (0.34s/gate). Furthermore, when comparing the runs of the SL expert, a maximum time difference of 20ms at each gate was noticed. This showed high repeatability skills of the SL expert. In opposite, the downhill expert with a maximum difference time of 1s at each gate was clearly less repeatable. Both skiers were not disturbed by the system. CONCLUSION: This study proposed a new wearable system to automatically time gates crossing during alpine skiing slalom combining force and accelerometer sensors. The system was evaluated with two professional world cup skiers and showed a high potential. This system could be extended to time other parameters. REFERENCES Waegli A, Skaloud J (2007). The usefulness of species distribution models (SDMs) in predicting impacts of climate change on biodiversity is difficult to assess because changes in species ranges may take decades or centuries to occur. One alternative way to evaluate the predictive ability of SDMs across time is to compare their predictions with data on past species distributions. We use data on plant distributions, fossil pollen and current and mid-Holocene climate to test the ability of SDMs to predict past climate-change impacts. We find that species showing little change in the estimated position of their realized niche, with resulting good model performance, tend to be dominant competitors for light. Different mechanisms appear to be responsible for among-species differences in model performance. Confidence in predictions of the impacts of climate change could be improved by selecting species with characteristics that suggest little change is expected in the relationships between species occurrence and climate patterns.

Due to the large number of characteristics, there is a need to extract the most relevant characteristicsfrom the input data, so that the amount of information lost in this way is minimal, and the classification realized with the projected data set is relevant with respect to the original data. In order to achieve this feature extraction, different statistical techniques, as well as the principal components analysis (PCA) may be used. This thesis describes an extension of principal components analysis (PCA) allowing the extraction ofa finite number of relevant features from high-dimensional fuzzy data and noisy data. PCA finds linear combinations of the original measurement variables that describe the significant variation in the data. The comparisonof the two proposed methods was produced by using postoperative patient data. Experiment results demonstrate the ability of using the proposed two methods in complex data. Fuzzy PCA was used in the classificationproblem. The classification was applied by using the similarity classifier algorithm where total similarity measures weights are optimized with differential evolution algorithm. This thesis presents the comparison of the classification results based on the obtained data from the fuzzy PCA.

Sähkömoottorin jatkuva-aikainen kunnonvalvonta vaatii tiedonsiirtoa moottorilta ylemmälle tietojärjestelmätasolle, kuten taajuusmuuttajalle. Uusien kaapeleiden asennus on työlästä ja kallista. Moottorin ja taajuusmuuttajan välillä on kuitenkin aina kaapeli, jota käytetään moottorin tehonsyöttöön. Tätä kaapelia on mahdollista käyttää myös tiedonsiirtokanavana. Tässä diplomityössä käsitellään ja tutkitaan sähköverkkotiedonsiirtomenetelmää, jonka avulla voidaan muodostaa Ethernet-yhteys moottorilta taajuusmuuttajalle tai toisinpäin. Työssä kehitetään simulointimalli tiedonsiirtokanavan taajuusriippuvan vaimennuksen simuloimiseen. Lisäksi kehitetään kytkentärajapinta, joka mahdollistaa tiedonsiirron kolmivaiheisessa taajuusmuuttajan syöttämässä moottorikaapelissa. Työssä suunnitellaan ja toteutetaan tiedonsiirtoa varten pilot-laitteisto, jolla tehdään laboratoriotestit. Laboratoriotesteillä varmistetaan menetelmän soveltuvuus. Laboratoriotestien avulla etsitään myös reunaehdot tiedonsiirron toiminnalle ja tiedonsiirtonopeuteen vaikuttavia tekijöitä taajuusmuuttajakäytössä. Lisäksi tarkastellaan menetelmän aiheuttamaa viivettä, joka on tärkeäsäätösovellusten kannalta. Lopuksi arvioidaan menetelmän soveltuvuus käytännön sovelluksiin.

Työn tavoitteena oli kehittää ja toteuttaa reaaliaikasimulaattori maastoajoneuvon käyttöliittymälle, jota ajoneuvon kuljettajakäyttää ajon aikana. Simulaattori oli tarkoitettu ensisijaisesti käyttöliittymän testaukseen, mutta sen pitää olla helposti laajennettavissa esimerkiksi koulutuskäyttöön. Mallinnustyökaluina oli tarkoitus käyttääpääsääntöisesti markkinoilta saatavia valmiita ohjelmistoja. Simulaattorin toteutuksessa käytettiin myös manuaalista ohjelmointia, koska valituilla ohjelmistoilla ei suoraan voinut saavuttaa reaaliaikaista visualisointia. Käsin kirjoitetut koodit hoitavat valmiilla ohjelmistoilla tehtyjen osien välisen tiedonsiirron. Varsinainen mallintaminen oli valituilla ohjelmistoilla helppoa ja nopeaa. Työn tuloksena saatiintoteutettua simulaattori, jonka vaikutelma oli reaaliaikainen. Käytettävyystestit onnistuivat hyvin simulaattorin avulla. Simulointimallin modulaarisuuden ansiosta mallia on helppo päivittää. Simulaattorin jatkokehityksessä oleelliset seikat ovat visualisoinnin parantaminen ja todellista ajoneuvoa vastaavan dynamiikan lisääminen.

Hilalta ohjattavien tehokytkimien, kuten IGBT tai MOSFET, ohjaaminen toteutetaan ohjausjännitettä muuttamalla. Hilaohjaimen tehtävä on ladata tehokytkimen hilakapasitanssia ohjattuun jännitteeseen. Hilaohjaimen siirtämän varauksen suuruuteen vaikuttaa hilakapasitanssin todellinen suuruus ja käytettävä ohjausjännite. Hilaohjaimen virrankäsittelykyky määrittää hilaohjaimen nopeuden siinä mielessä, että ohjattavan komponentin hilavaraus tulisi pystyä lataamaan ja purkamaan tietyssä suhteessa kytkentätaajuuteen. Kytkentätaajuuksien kasvaessa myös hilaohjaimen virrankäsittelykyky sekä hilaohjaimen teho joutuvat uudelleen arvioitaviksi. Työssä perehdytään IGBT:n toimintaan ja hilaohjainratkaisuihin suurilla kytkentätaajuuksilla. Työssä ontutkittu mahdollisuutta rakentaa IGBT:n hilaohjain jo markkinoilla olevista MOSFET:ien hilaohjaimista. Suurnopeushilaohjaimesta suunnitellaanja rakennetaan prototyyppi. Prototyypin suoriutumista tehtävistään tarkastellaan tekemällä mittauksia. Lopuksi arvioidaan asioita joiden tulee muuttua matkalla kohti megahertsien kytkentätaajuuksia.

Diplomityössä on kehitetty kaksitasoisen jännitevälipiirillisen taajuusmuuttajan häviöiden simulointiin käytettävä simulointimalli osaksi säädettävän sähkömoottorikäytön simulointityökalua, jolla voidaan analysoida eri säätöalgoritmien, kuormituksen ja kytkentätaajuuden vaikutusta taajuusmuuttajan häviöihin. Aluksi on selvitetty yksityiskohtaisesti taajuusmuuttajan häviölähteet ja häviöiden fysikaalinen tausta. Taajuusmuuttajassa käytettäville komponenteille on esitetty simulointimalleja. Taajuusmuuttajan malli ja häviöiden laskenta-algoritmit on toteutettu C-kielellä. Taajuusmuuttajan malli vastaa perusrakenteeltaan ACS800-02-0260-5 - taajuusmuuttajaa. ACS800-02-0260-5 -taajuusmuuttajan häviöitä on simuloitu erilaisissa kuormitustilanteissa, ja simulointien tueksi taajuusmuuttajan häviöt on pyritty selvittämään laboratoriomittauksin.
