"The work is mainly a grammar and dictionary of only one Oceanic language--that of Efate in the New Hebrides. The comparative portions refer only to a very few other Oceanic languages, and are quoted only to illustrate certain features in the grammar of the Efate."--Review by S. H. Ray in Man, VIII (1908) no. 40.

This review highlights structural and biosynthetic work on a group of nitrogen-functionalised terpenes that are almost exclusively found in marine invertebrates and the animals that feed on them. The chemical functionality reviewed includes isocyanides, isothiocyanates, formamides, thiocyanates, isocyanates, and dichloroimines. The literature through mid 2003 is reviewed and there are 143 citations.

Overexpression of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) A2 and B1 has been observed in a variety of tumour types, however, it is unknown whether this dysregulation is a consequence of, or a driving force for, unregulated cell proliferation. We have shown that the levels of hnRNPs A1, A2 and B1, but not A3, are modulated during the cell cycle of Colo16 squamous carcinoma cells and HaCaT immortalized keratinocytes, suggesting that A1, A2 and B1 are needed at particular cell cycle stages. However, the levels of hnRNP A1, A2 and B1 mRNAs were constant, indicating that regulation of protein levels was controlled at the level of translation. RNAi suppression of hnRNP At or A3 alone did not affect the proliferation of Colo16 cells but the proliferation rate was significantly reduced when both were suppressed simultaneously, or when either was suppressed together with hnRNP A2. Reducing hnRNP A2 expression in Colo16 and HaCaT cells by RNAi led to a non-apoptotic-related decrease in cell proliferation, reinforcing the view that this protein is required for cell proliferation. Suppression of hnRNP A2 in Colo16 cells was associated with increased p21 levels but p53 levels remained unchanged. In addition, expression of BRCA1 was downregulated, at both mRNA and protein levels. The observed effects of hnRNP A2 and its isoforms on cell proliferation and their correlation with BRCA1 and p21 expression suggest that these hnRNP proteins play a role in cell proliferation.

Semisolid metal forming has now been accepted as a viable technology for production of components with complex shape and high integrity. The advantages of semisolid metal forming can only be achieved when the feedstock material has a non-dendritic semisolid structure. A controlled nucleation method has been developed to produce such structures for semisolid forming. By controlling grain nucleation and growth, fine-grained and non-dendritic microstructures that are suitable for semisolid casting can be generated. The method was applied to hypoeutectic and hypereutectic Al-Si casting alloys, Al wrought alloys and a Mg alloy. Parameters such as pouring temperature, cooling rate and grain refiner addition were controlled to achieve copious nucleation, nuclei survival and dendritic growth suppression during solidification. The influences of the controlling parameters on the formation of semisolid structure were different for each of these alloy groups. The as-cast structures were then partially remelted and isothermally held. Semisolid structures were developed and followed by semisolid casting into a stepped die.

Sulfate (SO42-) is an important anion regulating many metabolic and cellular processes. Maintenance Of SO42- homeostasis occurs in the renal proximal tubule via membrane transport proteins. Two SO42- transporters that have been characterized and implicated in regulating serum SO42- levels are: NaSi- 1, a Na+-SO4 (2-) cotransporter located at the brush border membrane and Sat-1, a SO4 (2-) -anion exchanger located on the basolateral membranes of proximal tubular cells. Unlike Sat-1, for which very few studies have looked at regulation of its expression, NaSi- 1 has been shown to be regulated by various hormones and dietary conditions in vivo. To study this further, NaSj- I (SLC13A1) and Sat- I (SLC26A1) gene structures were determined and recent studies have characterized their respective gene promoters. This review presents the current understanding of the transcriptional regulation of NaSj- I and Sat- 1, and describes possible pathogenetic implications which arise as a consequence of altered SO(4)(2-)homeostasis. Long-term forecasts of pest pressure are central to the effective management of many agricultural insect pests. In the eastern cropping regions of Australia, serious infestations of Helicoverpa punctigera (Wallengren) and H. armigera (Hübner)(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are experienced annually. Regression analyses of a long series of light-trap catches of adult moths were used to describe the seasonal dynamics of both species. The size of the spring generation in eastern cropping zones could be related to rainfall in putative source areas in inland Australia. Subsequent generations could be related to the abundance of various crops in agricultural areas, rainfall and the magnitude of the spring population peak. As rainfall figured prominently as a predictor variable, and can itself be predicted using the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), trap catches were also related to this variable. The geographic distribution of each species was modelled in relation to climate and CLIMEX was used to predict temporal variation in abundance at given putative source sites in inland Australia using historical meteorological data. These predictions were then correlated with subsequent pest abundance data in a major cropping region. The regression-based and bioclimatic-based approaches to predicting pest abundance are compared and their utility in predicting and interpreting pest dynamics are discussed.
