The prediction of the sound attenuation in lined ducts with sheared mean flow has been a topic of research for many years. This involves solving the sheared mean flow wave equation, satisfying the relevant boundary condition. As far as the authors' knowledge goes, this has always been done using numerical techniques. Here, an analytical solution is presented for the wave propagation in two-dimensional rectangular lined ducts with laminar mean flow. The effect of laminar mean flow is studied for both the downstream and the upstream wave propagation. The attenuation values predicted for the laminar mean flow case are compared with those for the case of uniform mean flow. Analytical expressions are derived for the transfer matrices.

A simple and efficient algorithm for the bandwidth reduction of sparse symmetric matrices is proposed. It involves column-row permutations and is well-suited to map onto the linear array topology of the SIMD architectures. The efficiency of the algorithm is compared with the other existing algorithms. The interconnectivity and the memory requirement of the linear array are discussed and the complexity of its layout area is derived. The parallel version of the algorithm mapped onto the linear array is then introduced and is explained with the help of an example. The optimality of the parallel algorithm is proved by deriving the time complexities of the algorithm on a single processor and the linear array.

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää desorptio/fotoionisaatio ilmanpaineessa tekniikan (engl. desorption atmospheric pressure photoionization, DAPPI) soveltuvuutta rikosteknisen laboratorion näytteiden analysointiin. DAPPI on nopea massaspektrometrinen ionisaatiotekniikka, jolla voidaan tutkia yhdisteitä suoraan erilaisilta pinnoilta. Muut desorptioionisaatiotekniikat saattavat soveltua paremmin haastavien räjähdysainejäämien havaitsemiseksi.

Milito and Cruz have introduced a novel adaptive control scheme for finite Markov chains when a finite parametrized family of possible transition matrices is available. The scheme involves the minimization of a composite functional of the observed history of the process incorporating both control and estimation aspects. We prove the a.s. optimality of a similar scheme when the state space is countable and the parameter space a compact subset ofR.

Impedance matrix and transfer matrix methods are often used in the analysis of linear dynamical systems. In this paper, general relationships between these matrices are derived. The properties of the impedance matrix and the transfer matrix of symmetrical systems, reciprocal systems and conservative systems are investigated. In the process, the following observations are made: (a) symmetrical systems are not a subset of reciprocal systems, as is often misunderstood; (b) the cascading of reciprocal systems again results in a reciprocal system, whereas cascading of symmetrical systems does not necessarily result in a symmetrical system; (c) the determinant of the transfer matrix, being ±1, is a property of both symmetrical systems and reciprocal systems, but this condition, however, is not sufficient to establish either the reciprocity or the symmetry of the system; (d) the impedance matrix of a conservative system is skew-Hermitian.

Symmetry?adapted linear combinations of valence?bond (VB) diagrams are constructed for arbitrary point groups and total spin S using diagrammatic VB methods. VB diagrams are related uniquely to invariant subspaces whose size reflects the number of group elements; their nonorthogonality leads to sparser matrices and is fully incorporated into a binary integer representation. Symmetry?adapated linear combinations of VB diagrams are constructed for the 1764 singlets of a half?filled cube of eight sites, the 2.8 million ??electron singlets of anthracene, and for illustrative S?0 systems.

Cryogel matrices composed of different polymeric blends were synthesized, yielding a unique combination of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity with the presence or absence of charged surface. Four such cryogel matrices composed of polyacrylamide-chitosan (PAAC), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-chitosan, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) were tested for growth of different hybridoma cell lines and production of antibody in static culture. All the matrices were capable for the adherence of hybridoma cell lines 6A4D7, B7B10, and H9E10 to the polymeric surfaces as well as for the efficient monoclonal antibody (mAb) production. PAAC proved to be relatively better in terms of both mAb production and cell growth. Further, PAAC cryogel was designed into three different formats, monolith, disks, and beads, and used as packing material for packed-bed bioreactor. Longterm cultivation of 6A4D7 cell line on PAAC cryogel scaffold in all the three formats could be successfully done for a period of 6 weeks under static conditions. Continuous packed-bed bioreactor was setup using 6A4D7 hybridoma cell line in the three reactor formats. The reactors ran continuously for a period of 60 days during which mAb production and metabolism of cells in the bioreactors were monitored periodically. The monolith bioreactor performed most efficiently over a period of 60 days and produced a total of 57.5 mg of antibody in the first 30 days (in 500 mL) with a highest concentration of 115 mu g mL(-1), which is fourfold higher than t-flask culture. The results demonstrate that appropriate chemistry and geometry of the bioreactor matrix for cell growth and immobilization can enhance the reactor productivity. We report second harmonic generation in a new class of organic materials, namely donor-acceptor substituted all-trans butadienes doped in poly(methyl methacrylate) or polystyrene and oriented by corona poling at elevated temperatures. Second harmonic measurements were made at room temperature. The observed d33 coefficients are greater than those of potassium dihydrogen phosphate or 4-dimethylamino-4'-nitrostilbene doped in similar polymer matrices. Rotational diffusion coefficients estimated from the decay characteristics of the second harmonic intensity in the polymer films indicate that the polymer matrix plays a major role in stabilizing the dopants in a nonlinear optics conducive environment.

We review work initiated and inspired by Sudarshan in relativistic dynamics, beam optics, partial coherence theory, Wigner distribution methods, multimode quantum optical squeezing, and geometric phases. The 1963 No Interaction Theorem using Dirac's instant form and particle World Line Conditions is recalled. Later attempts to overcome this result exploiting constrained Hamiltonian theory, reformulation of the World Line Conditions and extending Dirac's formalism, are reviewed. Dirac's front form leads to a formulation of Fourier Optics for the Maxwell field, determining the actions of First Order Systems (corresponding to matrices of Sp(2,R) and Sp(4,R)) on polarization in a consistent manner. These groups also help characterize properties and propagation of partially coherent Gaussian Schell Model beams, leading to invariant quality parameters and the new Twist phase. The higher dimensional groups Sp(2n,R) appear in the theory of Wigner distributions and in quantum optics. Elegant criteria for a Gaussian phase space function to be a Wigner distribution, expressions for multimode uncertainty principles and squeezing are described. In geometric phase theory we highlight the use of invariance properties that lead to a kinematical formulation and the important role of Bargmann invariants. Special features of these phases arising from unitary Lie group representations, and a new formulation based on the idea of Null Phase Curves, are presented.

We study the effect that resistive regions have on the conductance of a quantum wire with interacting electrons which is connected to Fermi liquid leads. Using the bosonization formalism and a Rayleigh dissipation function to model the power dissipation, we use both scattering theory and Green's function techniques to derive the DC conductance. The resistive regions are generally found to lead to incoherent transport. For a single wire, we find that the resistance adds in series to the contact resistance of h/e(2) for spinless electrons, and the total resistance is independent of the Luttinger parameter K-W of the wire. We numerically solve the bosonic equations to illustrate what happens when a charge density pulse is incident on the wire; the results depend on the parameters of the resistive and interacting regions in interesting ways. For a junction of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid wires, we use a dissipationless current splitting matrix to model the junction. For a junction of three wires connected to Fermi liquid leads, there are two families of such matrices; we find that the conductance matrix generally depends on K-W for one family but is independent of K-W for the other family, regardless of the resistances present in the system. Computer Vision has seen a resurgence in the parts-based representation for objects over the past few years. The parts are usually annotated beforehand for training. We present an annotation free parts-based representation for the pedestrian using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF). We show that NMF is able to capture the wide range of pose and clothing of the pedestrians. We use a modified form of NMF i.e. NMF with sparsity constraints on the factored matrices. We also make use of Riemannian distance metric for similarity measurements in NMF space as the basis vectors generated by NMF aren't orthogonal. We show that for 1% drop in accuracy as compared to the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) representation we can achieve robustness to partial occlusion.

For an n(t) transmit, n(r) receive antenna system (n(t) x nr system), a full-rate space time block code (STBC) transmits min(n(t), n(r)) complex symbols per channel use. In this paper, a scheme to obtain a full-rate STBC for 4 transmit antennas and any n(r), with reduced ML-decoding complexity is presented. The weight matrices of the proposed STBC are obtained from the unitary matrix representations of a Clifford Algebra. By puncturing the symbols of the STBC, full rate designs can be obtained for n(r) < 4. For any value of n(r), the proposed design offers the least ML-decoding complexity among known codes. The proposed design is comparable in error performance to the well known Perfect code for 4 transmit antennas while offering lower ML-decoding complexity. Further, when n(r) < 4, the proposed design has higher ergodic capacity than the punctured Perfect code. Simulation results which corroborate these claims are presented.

A software and a microprocessor based hardware for waveform synthesis using Walsh functions are described. The software is based on Walsh function generation using Hadamard matrices and on the truncated Walsh series expansion for the waveform to be synthesized. The hardware employs six microprocessor controlled programmable Walsh function generators (PWFGs) for generating the first six non-vanishing terms of the truncated Walsh series. Improved approximation to a given waveform may be achieved by employing additional PWFGs.

The effect of using a spatially smoothed forward-backward covariance matrix on the performance of weighted eigen-based state space methods/ESPRIT, and weighted MUSIC for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is analyzed. Expressions for the mean-squared error in the estimates of the signal zeros and the DOA estimates, along with some general properties of the estimates and optimal weighting matrices, are derived. A key result is that optimally weighted MUSIC and weighted state-space methods/ESPRIT have identical asymptotic performance. Moreover, by properly choosing the number of subarrays, the performance of unweighted state space methods can be significantly improved. It is also shown that the mean-squared error in the DOA estimates is independent of the exact distribution of the source amplitudes. This results in a unified framework for dealing with DOA estimation using a uniformly spaced linear sensor array and the time series frequency estimation problems.

The eigenvalue and eigenstructure assignment procedure has found application in a wide variety of control problems. In this paper a method for assigning eigenstructure to a linear time invariant multi-input system is proposed. The algorithm determines a matrix that has eigenvalues and eigenvectors at the desired locations. It is obtained from the knowledge of the open-loop system and the desired eigenstructure. Solution of the matrix equation, involving unknown controller gams, open-loop system matrices, and desired eigenvalues and eigenvectors, results hi the state feedback controller. The proposed algorithm requires the closed-loop eigenvalues to be different from those of the open-loop case. This apparent constraint can easily be overcome by a negligible shift in the values. Application of the procedure is illustrated through the offset control of a satellite supported, from an orbiting platform, by a flexible tether.
