This paper theoretically and systematically investigates: (1) the effect of local transformed strains within deformation twinning on twin intersection; (2) the fracture mode based on type I co-zone tensile twin intersection in coarse-grained magnesium alloys, as well as the impacts of twin intersection and grain diameter on interfacial crack nucleation along twin boundaries; and (3) the influence of the local stresses arising from the encountered twin bands on crack growth. A novel dislocation-based strain nucleus model and a Green's function method, which are applicable to any material with local transformations in which elastic properties are reasonably approximated as isotropic, are specifically employed to model the concentrated transformed strain and calculate the local stress field resulting from deformation twinning and the stress intensity factors at crack tips in the magnesium alloys, respectively. In addition, an electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurement is provided for crack nucleation originating from Type I co-zone tensile twin intersection. The theoretical modeling indicates: (i) the local strains within barrier twins strongly dictate the growth of incident twins and enhance the twin propagation stress; (ii) larger grains favor brittle fracture. More specifically, the dislocation reactions and pile-ups at the junctions between tensile twins can result in interfacial crack nucleation and growth along the twin boundaries, which is a brittle fracture mode based on lower twinning stress and stress concentration in the coarse-grained magnesium alloys; and (iii) the direction of crack propagation is easily changed by high-density twin bands and twin intersections owing to the local strains.

This study used Rasch analysis to examine the psychometric validity of the Diabetes Distress Scale and the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale to assess diabetes distress in 3338 adults with diabetes (1609 completed the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale (n = 675 type 1 diabetes; n = 934 type 2 diabetes) and 1705 completed the Diabetes Distress Scale (n = 693 type 1 diabetes; n = 1012 type 2 diabetes)). While criterion and convergent validity were good, Rasch analysis revealed suboptimal precision and targeting, and item misfit. Unresolvable multidimensionality within the Diabetes Distress Scale suggests a total score should be avoided, while suboptimal precision suggests that the Physician-related and Interpersonal distress subscales should be used cautiously.

In the current study, the work-hardening behaviour of a high manganese TWIP steel was investigated at different deformation temperatures. At room temperature, the steel exhibited an excellent combination of mechanical properties due to a unique work-hardening behaviour. There were four distinct stages observed in the work-hardening behaviour as a result of complex dynamic strain induced microstructural reactions consisted of dynamic recovery, dislocation dissociation, stacking fault formation, mechanical twining and dynamic strain aging. An increase in the deformation temperature significantly influenced the microstructure evolution, resulting in a remarkable alteration in the work-hardening behaviour. Consequently, the mechanical properties of the TWIP steel were gradually deteriorated with the deformation temperature. The mechanical twins appeared to have a restricted influence on the work-hardening behaviour of the TWIP steel at room temperature and remarkably diminished with the temperature. The enhanced work-hardening behaviour was mostly attributed to the interaction of glide dislocations with stacking faults.

The effect of basal plate precipitates on the hardening of basal slip and {101¯2} twinning modes was investigated for a non-aged and aged AZ91 alloy in the twin dominated strain paths. Exploiting in-situ synchrotron and laboratory based X-ray diffraction methodologies, we quantified the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for basal slip and twinning modes. The twin volume fraction changes were quantified from the intensity changes with applied load. We observed that the twin volume fraction changes with plastic strain is sensitive to the initial texture, while the relative hardening of different deformation modes are considered as a secondary effect. We also found that the twin interior stresses were significantly smaller and consistent with the high twin back stresses in the presence of precipitates. We propose, based on a simple analytical equation, that the leading edge of the propagating twin have a Burgers vector equivalent to 100 twinning dislocations and when the propagating twin is blocked by a precipitate, relatively high resolved stress is required for bowing the twin dislocation and hence the propagation of the twin occurs by the dissociation of the leading edge of the twinning dislocation.

In situ neutron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT) have been used to study the early stages of bainite transformation in a 2 mass% Si nano-bainitic steel. It was observed that carbon redistribution between the bainitic ferrite and retained austenite at the early stages of the bainite transformation at low isothermal holding occurred in the following sequence: (i) formation of bainitic ferrite nuclei within carbon-depleted regions immediately after the beginning of isothermal treatment; (ii) carbon partitioning immediately after the formation of bainitic ferrite nuclei but substantial carbon diffusion only after 33 min of bainite isothermal holding; (iii) formation of the carbon-enriched remaining austenite in the vicinity of bainitic laths at the beginning of the transformation; (iv) segregation of carbon to the dislocations near the austenite/ferrite interface; and (v) homogeneous redistribution of carbon within the remaining austenite with the progress of the transformation and with the formation of bainitic ferrite colonies. Bainitic ferrite nucleated at internal defects or bainite/austenite interfaces as well as at the prior austenite grain boundary. Bainitic ferrite has been observed in the form of an individual layer, a colony of layers and a layer with sideplates at the early stages of transformation.

A new model is proposed that aims to capture within a single modelling frame all the main microstructural features of a severe plastic deformation process. These are: evolution of the grain size distribution, misorientation distribution, crystallographic texture and the strain-hardening of the material. The model is based on the lattice curvature that develops in all deformed grains. The basic assumption is that lattice rotation within an individual grain is impeded near the grain boundaries by the constraining effects of the neighbouring grains, which gives rise to lattice curvature. On that basis, a fragmentation scheme is developed which is integrated in the Taylor viscoplastic polycrystal model. Dislocation density evolution is traced for each grain, which includes the contribution of geometrically necessary dislocations associated with lattice curvature. The model is applied to equal-channel angular pressing. The role of texture development is shown to be an important element in the grain fragmentation process. Results of this modelling give fairly precise predictions of grain size and grain misorientation distribution. The crystallographic textures are well reproduced and the strength of the material is also reliably predicted based on the modelling of dislocation density evolution coupled with texture development.
