To capitalise on the strengthening potential of zirconium as a potent grain refiner for magnesium alloys, the mechanisms of adding zirconium to magnesium and its subsequent grain refining action need to be understood. Using a Mg-33.3Zr master alloy (Zirmax supplied by Magnesium Elektron Ltd) as a zirconium alloying additive, the influence of different alloying conditions on the dissolution of zirconium in magnesium was investigated. It was found that owing to the highly alloyable microstructure of Zirmax, the dissolution of zirconium was generally complete within a few minutes in the temperature range 730 to 780degreesC. Prolonging and/or intensifying stirring were found to have no conspicuous influence on further enhancing the dissolution of zirconium. In all cases studied, the average grain size increased with increasing holding time at temperature while the total zirconium content decreased. The finest grain structure and highest total zirconium content corresponded to sampling immediately after stirring. Pick up of iron by molten magnesium from the mild steel crucibles used for melting and holding, was significantly delayed or avoided in the temperature range 730 to 780degreesC by coating the crucibles with boron nitride. It is therefore feasible to conduct zirconium alloying at 730degreesC without the need of a considerable excess of Zirmax addition using a properly coated or lined steel crucible.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a succinct but nevertheless complete mechanistic overview of the various types of magnesium corrosion. The understanding of the corrosion processes of magnesium alloys builds upon our understanding of the corrosion of pure magnesium. This provides an understanding of the types of corrosion exhibited by,magnesium alloys, and also of the environmental factors Of most importance. This deep understanding is required as a foundation if we are to produce magnesium alloys much more resistant to corrosion than the present alloys. Much has already been achieved, but there is vast scope for improvement. This present analysis can provide a foundation and a theoretical framework for further, much needed research. There is still vast scope both for better fundamental understanding of corrosion processes, engineering usage of magnesium, and also on the corrosion protection of magnesium alloys in service.

Metal ion binding properties of the immunosuppressant drug cyclosporin A have been investigated. Complexation studies in acetonitrile solution using H-1 NMR and CD spectroscopy yielded 1:1 metal-peptide binding constants (log(10)K) for potassium(l), < 1, magnesium(II), 4.8 +/- 0.2. and calcium(II), 5.0 +/- 1.0. The interaction of copper(II) with cyclosporin A in methanol was investigated with UV/visible and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. No complexation of copper(II) was observed in neutral solution. In the presence of base, monomeric copper(II) complexes were detected. These results support the possibility that cyclosporin A has ionophoric properties for biologically important essential metal ions. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

An investigation was carried out into the galvanic corrosion of magnesium alloy AZ91D in contact with zinc, aluminium alloy A380 and 4150 steel. Specially designed test panels were used to measure galvanic currents under salt spray conditions. It was found that the distributions of the galvanic current densities on AZ91D and on the cathodes were different. An insulating spacer between the AZ91D anode and the cathodes could not eliminate galvanic corrosion. Steel was the worst cathode and aluminium the least aggressive to AZ91D. Corrosion products from the anode and cathodes appeared to be able to affect the galvanic corrosion process through an alkalisation, passivation, poisoning effect or shortcut effect. The corrosion behaviour of die cast magnesium alloy AZ91D aged at 160degreesC was investigated. The corrosion rate of the alloy decreases with ageing time in the initial stages and then increases again at ageing times greater than 45 h. The dependence of the corrosion rate on ageing time can be related to the changes in microstructure and local composition during ageing. Precipitation of the beta phase (Mg17Al12) occurs exclusively along the grain boundaries during ageing. The beta phase acts as a barrier, resulting in a decreasing corrosion rate in the initial stages of ageing. In the later stages, the decreasing aluminium content of alpha grains makes the alpha matrix more active, causing an increase in the corrosion rate. Electrochemical testing results also confirm the combined effects of the changes in alpha and beta phases on the corrosion resistance of the aged die cast AZ91D alloy. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The addition of 1 wt-%Sr to AE42 results in an improvement in the tensile strength of the alloy at elevated temperatures of 150 and 175degreesC and an improvement in the constant load creep properties at 175degreesC. The improved elevated temperature tensile and creep strength of the alloy can be attributed to the presence of a strontium-containing phase in the microstructure of the alloy along with an increase in the stability of the microstructure of the alloy at high temperatures. High pressure die casting is the most important production method for casting magnesium alloy components, and uniformity of appearance is an important criterion for acceptance of a component by customers. This paper investigates the influence of uniformity in surface appearance of diecast AZ91D plates on their corrosion behaviour. Through immersion, hydrogen collection and weight loss measurements it was found that corrosion is more likely to occur on the areas of the plate that appear to be darker, leading to a non-uniformly corroded surface. Microstructural analysis showed that the non-uniformity in appearance is related to a difference in the morphology and distribution of porosity across the surface of a diecast AZ91D plate. The darker areas of the surface are high in porosity which breaks the continuity of the beta-phase network and provides shortcut paths for corrosion from the surface to the interior of the casting. The brighter shiny areas of the surface are much less porous, with isolated pores being confined by corrosion resistant beta-precipitates thus reducing the corrosion rate.

Corrosion resistance is an important property that could be affected by the ageing process. In order to investigate whether aging affects the corrosion resistance, corrosion rate and yield strength of diecast magnesium alloy AZ91D were measured and analysed after ageing. It was found that the dependence of the corrosion rate on ageing time can be ascribed to the changes in microstructure of the alloy and chemical composition of its matrix. Precipitation of the P phase (Mg17Al12) occurred along the grain boundaries during the initial ageing stages, resulting in a decreasing corrosion rate and an inceasing yield strength. In the later stages, the decreasing aluminium content in the alpha matrix made it more active, causing an increase in the corrosion rate. The decrease in aluminium content in the matrix also leads to a decrease in yield strength.

The magnesium alloy AM-SC1 has been developed as a creep-resistant automotive engine block material. This paper outlines its corrosion performance under laboratory test conditions, considering corrosion on both the external and internal surfaces. This study found that AM-SC1 has a corrosion performance comparable to AZ91 when subjected to an aggressive salt-spray environment or in galvanic-coupling environments. This article further demonstrates that, with the appropriate selection of a commercially available engine coolant, the internal corrosion of AM-SC1 can be maintained at a tolerable level. In addition, internal corrosion resistance can be significantly improved by the addition of fluorides to the coolant solution. It is concluded that AM-SC1 can be successfully used in an engine environment provided that some simple corrosion-prevention strategies are adopted.

The yield strength of high-pressure diecast (hpdc) test bars of alloy AZ91 increases with decreasing section thickness while its hardness remains approximately constant. This behaviour is in contrast with that of the gravity cast alloy, whose hardness scales with the yield strength. Vickers hardness measured on the surface of hpdc test bars using increasing loads shows that the subsurface porosity layer usually found in hpdc material may gradually collapse under the indent, lowering the hardness. However, this is insufficient to explain the lack of correlation between hardness and yield strength. It is argued that the low strain-hardening rate of high-pressure diecast material leads to lower than expected hardness values. In addition, it is shown that the plastic zone under a macro indentation is largely contained by the softer core of the castings, rendering hardness insensitive to the casting thickness. It is concluded that macrohardness is too coarse a tool for a meaningful determination of the strength of hpdc material. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
