Several aspects interfere when it comes to choose a career. Some of which are family and cultural influence; and even lack of opportunities. Such aspects were greatly taken into consideration for defining the subject of this research which is to analyze the reasoning Pedagogy students from UNESP (Universidade Estadual Paulista – University of São Paulo State) used when choosing their academic career, and to assess the students’ profile who were taking this course in 2011 as well as the influence of students’ socioeconomic conditions. An empiric approach with a qualitative survey was chosen to develop this research which was conducted with a questionnaire appliance and with a semi-structured interview with randomly selected students. A theoretical study about the specifics of the academic career and a fully comprehension of the legal / regulatory aspects of this profession in Brazil were also conducted. The survey results showed that most students were women, supporting the fact that this career has become a female profession. Characteristics such as vocation and mission, presented on literatures as the specifics of this profession were clearly seen in the survey results. Several students went to public schools and are labeled into the classes C and D in social economical status; furthermore almost 50% had not chosen Pedagogy as a first choice for a major. However, most of the students do not think that their social economical status had influence in their choice. Nevertheless some students claimed that their options were not their first wish and their choice was made by the easier possibility of entering and concluding the course besides the prompt need of these professionals after graduating in the job market. The cervical enamel projection (CEP) is an anatomic variation that can be found in the cement enamel junction, it´s recognition and early diagnosis improves outcome the tooth involved, allowing greater efficiency in treatment. The knowledge of the location, grade and incidence of CEP is decisive on prevention and treatment of periodontal disease. It were studied 1200 molars (600 mandibular molars and 600 maxillary molars) separated from the collection of teeth on the Discipline of Anatomy in FOSJCampos - UNESP. Each group of 600 teeth was separated from the second side (300 teeth) and the second type (first, second or third molar). Each tooth had thoroughly inspected the cervical region, in all their faces, in order to verify the incidence and the grade of CEP in each surface. It was found that the CEP covered in 278 (23,17%) teeth was 146 (52,52%) mandibular molars and 132 (47,48%) maxillary molars. The CEPs were concentrated on a tooth surface in 222 (79,86%) teeth, in two surfaces 53 (19,06%) teeth, and in three surfaces in three (1,08%) teeth. From the total of 4.800 surfaces examined the CEPs were found in 337 surfaces, and 228 (67,66%) surfaces of the grade I, 60 (17,8%) grade II and 49 (14,54%) grade III. The buccal surface presented 207 (61,42%) CEP, the lingual surface in 57 (16,91%), the mesial surface in 35 (10,39%) and the distal surface in 38 (11,28%) CEP. The results of this study demonstrated that the CEPs have focused more on the mandibular teeth on only one surface of the tooth, the grade I was the most found and the buccal surface the most involved

In this work polystyrene composites reinforced with recycled sisal fibers were processed, in order to apply in the manufacture of printed circuit boards. A thermoplastic matrix of recycled polystyrene was used, this material came from waste expanded polystyrene (EPS) used in appliance's packages. Composites were prepared with 15% and 25% of sisal fibers. To obtain the composites, wasted EPS and natural sisal fibers were chosen, to encourage recycling and reuse of household waste and also the use of renewable resources. The composites were analyzed by standard tensile and flexural test, in order to verify the mechanical properties of the material. The characterization of the composite was done by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) , thermogravimetry (TGA / DTG) , differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dielectric analysis . The analysis of the results showed that the percentage of fibers in the composite influences directly the thermal and mechanical properties. Plates with a lower percentage of fibers showed superior properties at a higher percentage. The composite material obtained is easy to process and it's use is feasible for the confection of printed circuit boards, considering it's mechanical, thermal and insulative properties

Fixed mandibular propulsion appliances are an alternative for the treatment of Class II malocclusion in individuals with mandibular deficiency. Since they are fixed appliances, said devices keep the mandible in an anterior-forced position during rest and during all mandibular functions. When a propulsive appliance is used, the lower jaw is displaced forward and downward. This movement leads to a new position of the condyle, which can, ultimately affect the normal functioning of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The aim of this paper was to review effects of fixed mandibular propulsive appliance on TMJ. Inclusion criteria considered studies on animals or humans using TMJ radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Studies confirm a favorable relation between condyle and glenoid fossa following treatment with fixed mandibular propulsion appliances.

Permanent teeth impaction is highly prevalent among brazilian people. Its etiology is related to local and general factors association. Permanent teeth retention compromises dental occlusion and when anterior teeth are involved, it also brings esthetics impairments which lead to psychological disturbance. Early diagnosis and adequate treatment are extremely important to solve not only occlusal problems but also psychological aspects. Orthodontic traction of impacted teeth can be conducted by using fixed or removable appliances. Although it depends on patient compliance the use of removable appliances provides an anchorage based on the teeth and the palate reducing undesirable side effects. This paper describes the case of a fourteen years old female patient whose right maxillary central incisor was adequately tractioned with a removable orthodontic appliance. Removable orthodontic devices were used at first to reposition teeth in maxillary anterior area what provided adequate space to allow the placement of the impacted incisor and after were also used to traction and position this tooth. The procedure described seemed to be effective, non expensive and a viable treatment to be performed even on the scope of public health services, extending orthodontic treatment to a higher number of patients.

The pattern of caries lesions has been modified over decades. If the presence or absence of a caries lesion is based upon only a visual examination, its diagnosis might become underestimated since dentinal lesions underneath non cavitated or minimally demineralized enamel is highly frequent in dental clinics. The aim of this paper is to report a clinical case of a child with an upper molar with questionable occlusal aspect, presenting asymptomatic pulpal hyperplasia on the distolingual pit. Periapical radiographic examination was essential for diagnosing hidden caries and elaborating the treatment plan. As part of the approach, removal of the decayed tissue and pulpotomy with calcium hydroxide were performed. The association of an accurate visual examination to an adequate oral radiographyis is extremely important in cases which the presence of hidden caries is doubtful. As a result, an early diagnosis and the reduction of more invasive interventions related to the oral health care of pediatric patients can be achieved as well.

Objectives: natural dentofacial changes and that induced by the Thurow modified extra oral appliance (TMEOA) were evaluated in this prospective study. Methodology: the data consisted of fifteen Class II division 1 children 7 to 10 years old, with anterior open bite and hiperdivergent facial pattern treated with the Thurow appliance and of fifteen Class II division 1 children followed longitudinally from 6 to 12 years of age without treatment (Burlington Growth Centre, Toronto University, Canada). The analyses were based in traditional measurements obtained in lateral cephalometric radiographs scanned with the aid of the software Radiocef Studio®. Radiographs were taken in the beginning and after 1 year of treatment for the treated group and at the 6, 9 and 12 years of age for the control group. Results: the data analysis showed that the TMEOA significantly reduced the SNA, ANB, AOBO, SNPOc SNPM, SGO/NMe, OJ e OB. On the other hand the appliance did not interfere with the SNB e SNPP. The natural growth promoted significant change in the ANB, AOBO, SNPOc, OJ e OB from 6 to 9 years and in the SNB, SNPOc e SGo/NMe from 9 to 12 years. The restriction of the maxillary growth (SNA), reduction of the skeletal discrepancy (ANB) and the reduction of the overjet (OJ) were significant with the treatment considering the natural growth as verified in the control group. Conclusion: the TMEOA corrected the skeletal Class II malocclusion by maxillary restriction, reducing the overjet, closing the anterior open bite and decreasing both the hyper divergent facial pattern and mandible plane inclination.

When well indicated, the orthodontic surgical approach is the ideal treatment mean for Skeletal Class III adult patients. To improve facial esthetic results from orthognatic surgery, the leveling and alignment of maxillary dental arch must be achieved with minimal inclination and projection or even retro-inclination of anterior upper teeth. During a pre-surgical phase of 12 months, headgear bilateral force of 150 g/F was applied to the upper molars of a 22 years old male compliant patient with Class III skeletal malocclusion, to provide an upper teeth control of mesial tipping and projection during alignment and leveling. The ideal occlusal parameters required for surgical procedure were achieved without dental extractions permitting a total treatment period of 37 months. The outcomes remained stable over 3 years follow up after the removal of the appliance. The results indicate that, although headgear use depends greatly on patient compliance, when well indicated it is an interesting alternativetopromote dentaldecompensationon pre-surgical period, in order to allow surgical correction of skeletal Class III malocclusion.

Two treatment options are available for adult patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion caused by mandibular deficiency: combined mandibular advancement surgery and orthodontic treatment or mandibular advancement appliance. This study aimed to analyze the effects of two therapeutic modalities of Class II malocclusion treatment with mandibular deficiency. Two distinct individuals with Class II malocclusion division 1 and mandibular deficiency were treated after growth spurt. The first individual used the Herbst appliance as a therapeutic option and the second individual was treated with bilateral sagittal osteotomy. The cephalometric, occlusion and face results were evaluated for both individuals. Correction of Class II malocclusion was observed on both Herbst and surgery patients resulting on a normal occlusal relationship with normal overjet and overbite. Therefore it was concluded that Herbst appliance can be used to treat borderline skeletal Class II in adult patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the facial profile changes due to natural growth and induced by Herbst appliance and Bionator in the treatment of Class II, division 1 malocclusion. In order to do that, we used a sample of 90 lateral radiographs of 45 individuals in pre-pubertal stage, divided up in two experimental groups and one control. The first group, composed of 15 brazilian individuals, with initial mean age of 9.4 years, was treated with the Herbst appliance for a period of seven months. The second experimental group consisting of 15 brazilian individuals, initial mean age of 9.9 years has gone through bionator therapy for an average period of 21 months. The control group of 15 individuals, who were not treated orthodontically, comes up from the Burlington Growth Centre, University of Toronto, Canada. The intragroup comparison was performed using the Student t test and intergroup comparisons by ANOVA complemented by the Bonferroni test. The results have shown that only the group treated with the Herbst appliance presented significant changes in facial profile with improvement of its convexity and lower lip protrusion.

The study aimed to assess the degree of dental crowding correction on the lower anterior region of patients treated with T4k functional appliance using Little’s irregularity index. Twenty caucasian patients of both gender (10 female and 10 male) were selected. They featured malocclusion Class I and II in mixed dentition, with chronological age between 5.7 and 11 years. The treatment lasted from 1 year and 11 months up to 3 years and 11 months. Lower anterior crowding was measured using Little’s irregularity index. Measurements were obtained on study models achieved before and after functional orthopedic therapy, using a digital caliper in millimeters and placed parallel to the occlusal plane. Overjet and overbite measurements were also performed using a caliper. Results demonstrated that the therapy provided significant decrease in overjet (average = 1.55 mm) and also in the irregularity index (average = 1.23 mm). There was a nonsignificant raise in overbite. There was no relation between the studied variables and the treatment period or even with the patient’s age in the beginning of the therapy. The treatment with T4k resulted on reduction and improvement of dental crowding.
